What Happens When a Human Gets Rabies?

  • Rabies has been scaring populations for thousands of years, but it's scary for more reasons than just a painful bite. Once the virus is inside us, it not only destroys our body, but damages our mind, and it can happen fast, or lay dormant for years before fatally attacking.
So how exactly do we get from a dog bite to a complete behavioral change to...death?
    ____________________
SICK is a new series that looks at how diseases actually work inside our body. We'll be visiting medical centers and talking to top researchers and doctors to uncover the mysteries of viruses, bacteria, fungi and our own immune system. Come back every Tuesday for a new episode and let us know in the comments which diseases you think we should cover next.

I was 5 years old in 1956 when I got bit by a skunk. The skunk was caught and taken to the 8th floor of Parkland Hospital in Dallas. The 8th floor has it's own elevator and is an animal hospital floor (or it was in the 50's). The skunk was euthanized and it was determined the skunk had rabies. This meant I had to take 21 rabies shots in the intestine area. One a day, alternating sides. Each injection left a big sore spot on a little boys stomach and they hurt. My Dad promised me we would get a banana split if I didn't cry out. After about 12 days, it hurt so much that tear would flow freely but I didn't make a sound. I got 21 banana splits! This was a true account of a 5 year old's experience with the shots.

I got bit by a squirrel once.. I asked the doctor for a rabies shot and he said I had to go the County’s office and apply for one. They’d review my application for 6 weeks before I can get approved for it.
I obviously didn’t have rabies but if I did, I’m pretty sure the shot wouldn’t have work after 6 weeks

They are not smart, this a miss conception, this is just how evolution works through millions of years, a random mutation that works better for contamination makes the virus more successful to replicate and to continue its process passing the successful genes. And in the other hand, lets say a random mutation that makes the virus less efficient with the contamination process make they less likely to pass it "version" ahead. Virus and bacterias have like thousands of generations in hours of existence, that's why they appear to be so sophisticated. But they don't actively think "o i must be slow and then i have to to to the saliva to assure contamination", no, it just happens, is just what is written in it's DNA by literally millions of "trial and error" evolution process.

@Corey Yes, however most of those treated were, correct me if I am wrong, already showing symptoms of the disease when the treatment was giving to them. So, while the vaccine at that stage wouldn't help, this protocol would be used as a last resort. While you say it is considered a failure, I would say that at that stage in the progression of the disease, any chance is better than nothing at all. Or, if they don't want treatment, then holistic care should be given to ensure they don't die suffering.

Toxoplasma gondii infection in humans: any connection with schizophrenia or other neurological disorders (especially hosts' behaviour modification).
Secondarily the "second brain" hypothesis, the gut being the larger area of concentration of neurohormonal activity, and the impact of the microbiome on moods and potentially altering behaviours to suit certain organisms (ie candida albican overgrowth causing sugar cravings) I know, kinda sketchy, but hopefully you can make something relevant out of this.

They told me I was in dire trouble. I could have been quarantined in Atlanta for 4 YEARS!! (how long it would take to either die of it, or find out I never got it WITH CERTAINTY!). Lucky for me, there was a new treatment at the Pasteur Company in France, that was under the FDA approval process for use in the USA. I was a Federal inmate, so I was given a waiver by the Attorney General to receive the new vac prior to FDA approval, right in the Federal Prison in El Reno! I WAS THE FIRST PERSON IN THE USA TO GET THIS NEW TREATMENT!!! It is the standard treatment after May of 1980!

This video did great in informing us about what rabies is and how it spreads, but it didn't really capture the intrinsic dread and horror of rabies.
It doesn't just kill you. It makes you afraid of everything. Imagine in your mind a crazy person on the streets shouting weird things, looking like they're terrified of everything, unable to respond to even the simplest questions.
Once the virus reaches your brain, that will be you. You'll be a broken person - unable to recover, doomed to die a slow, painful, dreadful death where your loved ones are absolutely helpless and are forced to watch you spiral down into insanity, dehydration, and death.
The worst part is - just like the lady in the video said - you could be infected and not even know it. A bat may have nibbled on you and you didn't feel it, maybe it got you in your sleep, maybe you got it years ago and the virus is remaining dormant, maybe that accidental animal bite from a few weeks ago went unchecked and now there's nothing you can do about it...
Either way, it's so important to get a rabies vaccine before going to areas with bats or any outdoorsy area. If you suspect you've been bitten, get a rabies shot. Don't underplay the situation. Make it top priority, go to the ER, make a big deal about it. You have to because rabies doesn't have symptoms unless it's already reached your brain - but once it reaches your brain, it's already too late. Might as well have one last drink and a meal, and then end it yourself.
    Cheers y'all!

Human infected with late stages rabies are more like paralyzed amputees than those zombies you see in fictional media. People who have rabies but not seek treatment will eventually fall down and expire than walk or even run like those zombies you see in movies or games because infected rabies patients have trouble even opening their mouth to swallow much less coordinate their hands and legs to overpower a healthy human being.

    • @Gorehoundula
      @Gorehoundula ปีที่แล้ว

The true closest thing to a real life zombie was Hisashi Ouchi, when we're talking about the undead aspect of zombies, at least. His chromosomes were destroyed by radiation, making it impossible for his DNA to rebuild his cells, rendering him a living rotting corpse, essentially. They had to use everything from skin grafts to stem cell transplants to preserve his skin, but no matter what, it kept rotting off. He even was brought back from the dead multiple times in vain attempts to save his life. It's a miracle he even lasted months.
Rabies can cause violent attacks, but it usually plays out like Ouchi's fate: A slow, horrible, agonizing death in bed. I'm not sure anything can turn you into what they show in movies and games. The closest I've heard of usually come from drugs and mental illness, and even those can be exaggerated. PCP is a drug that has been associated with cannibalistic attacks, but it's far from the normal reaction to it. The infamous "Miami zombie" who ate a homeless man's face ten years ago didn't have bath salts in his system, despite what was widely reported. The only drug in him was marijuana, which obviously isn't a zombie drug. He was apparently prone to paranoia and violent outbursts in the past, so the likely explanation for the attack was probably mental illness of some kind.

TH-cam recommended me a video of some children on 1920s who got infected by rabies and that was one of most horrible thing I've ever seen, really grateful for there's vaccines nowadays

Anyway I remember when a puppy bit me just above my mounth... I was 4 years old that time and I carried the puppy so I could look closer that he did that and it slightly bleed. I causally told my mom about it since even in that age I knew that people becomes crazy when they get rabis and did not get treatment.

My theory: when bite in the head (if possible) the symptoms appear in 5 days-1 week/ when bite from the neck the virus the symptoms appear from 1 week- 3 weeks/ bite from the arm from 3 weeks- 2 months/ bite from the leg 2 months- 1 year

A Norwegian young woman died recently of rabies after being bitten by a dog she tried to help, in East Asia. The hospital immediately, and early in the stage, realized it was rabies, but it was too late. She died a few days later.
Think twice before you touch animals abroad. If you don't know it's safe, don't do it!

Well if you travel to a country that has rabies, and have even a chance you might be around animals, you should really get your rabies shot before you go.

I was bitten very badly by a big monkey on my left ankle. It's claws took out another chunk of flesh on my right shoulder. That horrific incident took place in a hostel in 2010. My friends took me to a chemist, for they don't know any doctor. The chemist guy applied betadin balm but advised me not to stitch up the wound. When I came back to the hostel, I saw the terrace covered with thick pool of blood. It was hell of a moment in my life. They gave me anti rabies injections 5 times, costing me $$$.
I'm alive but I still feel the pain on those scars.
