- We take you up on a clear evening to see the sunset near the Visitors Center at 9000 feet on Mauna Kea volcano on Hawaii Island during a new moon, so we could experience an beautiful sunset AND a gorgeous stargazing evening with the Milky Way splayed across the cosmos over head. We invite folks to join us on these adventures every few months and hike to the top of the cinder cone, watch sunset and head down and have a picnic and wait for full dark. So cool!
The best part of coming up to Mauna Kea during the new moon is that you get to see something you have most likely never seen before, if you live in a city or anywhere where light pollution is present. You see a spectacle of stars with satellites and shooting stars. It IS chilly, so bring your blankets, closed shoes, jackets and stay til dark!

How far of a hike from the visitor center to where you ultimately stop to stargaze?

Cool info on the Mouflon “In 1957, mouflon sheep were introduced to Hawai'i Island. Shortly afterwards, biologists from the State Division of Fish and Game began crossbreeding purebred mouflon rams with feral ewes at Pu'u La'au on Mauna Kea. The hybrid and purebred mouflon sheep were all released throughout Mauna Kea from 1962-1966.”
Yes, was interesting!
Had fun! Beautiful clear skies up there. 🙂
Is it possible to this the Milky way this coming week ? On a clear night of course
Hi… are you doing this observatory between Jan2 - 7th? Love to Tag along
How’s the drive down at night? Is it dangerous?
Did u mean that we need to have 4 wheel drive to do this activity? Do we need to make reservation?
Hi I live on this island. Where they went you do not need 4wheel drive. They went to the visitor center and walked to the part where they watched the sunset which isn’t that far of a walk. You only need 4wheel drive if you plan on driving to the summit of Mauna kea which is about a 8mile drive up to the summit from the visitor center.
Is the drive to the visitors center tough?
I'm planning a trip here, was this video taken from the sumet or the visitor center? How late do both stay open? It's a place I've always wanted to visit haha thanks for such a great video!
