SRV was there and started venturing more in to jazz when his life was cut short. Most are compelled to always compare one player with other notable greats in the past as some kind of sign of a subjective value.
They played it live at the show I caught last summer in Nashville, and I believe the first time of the tour. Anyways, it was damn near a religious experience live. Listened to that song in repeat in the car for at least a week when Stadium Arcadium came out.

You can have as much technical ability as you want. Without soul and emotion it means nothing. It always looks like John intensely feels every note he plays. There is so much emotional depth to his playing. No other guitar player I'm aware of gives me that.
Players have their own way of expressing soul. I think the only way playing any instrument can really genuinely be soulless is if you just don’t care and you’re not actually dedicated to the music; THEN it just becomes wanking notes. Frusciante chooses to stick to a “less is more” type of style, people like Vai are more “in yer face”, Eddie’s all about creativity, Hendrix is all about originality, Randy Rhoads was all about ferocity and Yngwie, unlike John, goes for a “m”…well…just reread my take on Frusciante’s style and work it out for yourself 🤣

Eddie is as bluesy as it gets, he adds in alot of classical elements, his rhythm is insane not even talking about his speed, just his accuracy with his rhythm. When John was a kid he played modern shred style guitars and was obsessed with technique and players like Steve Vai. He got older and matured into the player he is today. It’s less about notes and more about feel. But, he’s way more technically advanced and studied than he lets on.
By far the greatest guitarist of this generation, & right up there with the others. He's also an amazing singer. His solo albums are all INCREDIBLE! The empyrean is a masterpiece that EVERYONE should listen to.
The most beautiful part is that he is able to make semitones up and mistakes fit into the solo in such a natural way that becomes way prettier than if it was played accordingly to musical strict structures ... Its like an extension of his soul. No shredding, just pure soul and building things as they go inside you. Frusciante, you are a living legend sir. Mad respect.

John is quite possibly one of the most creative musicians of the 20th and 21st century. We may not have Jimi Hendrix but the animating spirit of Hendrix lives on in artists like John.

@@DustinDollinsShinBone I appreciate your comment and do in fact agree contrary to my original comment - the point I think I was trying to convey is just that his influence is underrated and the fact he isn’t a virtuoso type of player like a Vai, Satriani, etc makes me easy to overlook as a good songwriter. Whether you’re a Top 40’s kind of person or a… Polyphia (just as an example) type of fan, it’s undeniable that the guy can write songs, and hits at that, but doesn’t get mentioned often when speaking of contemporary players.
He has a sort of tick in his playing where it looks stiff, but then the notes sing out perfectly. I think that tick is a big part of his sound. It adds that bit of aggressiveness that clearly is his tone, and his tone alone. People say he sounds like Jimi. No he doesn't. You can put on a Frusciante song I've never heard and I'll clearly be able to tell its him. An influence..... yes. John definitely has his own thing. And I haven't seen anyone be able to do it justice when trying to teach it.
YES!!! John is always “guessing” what he’s gonna do next. Even with all his musicianship and training, he has exercised his instinct to stay sharp above everything else. That’s his “tick.” That’s why we love him and that’s why he keeps getting better.
Noticed that too! I've learnt that playing well and clean has a lot to do with being relaxed through your playing, but he seems very anxious and Shakey. Not a criticism as much as observation, even my own confusion, because he's obviously amazing!
That's one of the best ways I've ever heard it put. Everything about John makes him look like the anti-rock star: he's reserved, dresses simply, doesn't always look comfortable performing. And then he hits the first note of a solo and you realise you're in the presence of a musical genius

We are allowed to have our opinions. But for me, personally. John is the greatest to ever play. I am glad we got to keep him, and he didn't completely self-destruct. God bless this man

John is my favorite ❤️🔥❤️ he has his own style and sound, he also has quite a few stage appearances. he's kind-hearted and always puts his soul into it... Not to mention that he does incredible solos

John is quite possibly one of the most creative musicians of the 20th and 21st century. We may not have Jimi Hendrix but the animating spirit of Hendrix lives on in artists like John.
He makes me cry everyday. I’m so glad I’m getting the chance to go see him again in just a few months ❤

I’m not even a big chili peppers fan but John is by far one of the most understated and underrated guitar players out there
It is because he is a lousy guitar player.He holds a guitar like it is a shovel.
I don't think so. I feel like he has influenced an entire generation of guitar players. I am not trying to argue with you but he's definitely held in very high regard in my opinion.
@@DustinDollinsShinBone I appreciate your comment and do in fact agree contrary to my original comment - the point I think I was trying to convey is just that his influence is underrated and the fact he isn’t a virtuoso type of player like a Vai, Satriani, etc makes me easy to overlook as a good songwriter. Whether you’re a Top 40’s kind of person or a… Polyphia (just as an example) type of fan, it’s undeniable that the guy can write songs, and hits at that, but doesn’t get mentioned often when speaking of contemporary players.

John has tremendous talent.
He has a sort of tick in his playing where it looks stiff, but then the notes sing out perfectly. I think that tick is a big part of his sound. It adds that bit of aggressiveness that clearly is his tone, and his tone alone. People say he sounds like Jimi. No he doesn't. You can put on a Frusciante song I've never heard and I'll clearly be able to tell its him. An influence..... yes. John definitely has his own thing. And I haven't seen anyone be able to do it justice when trying to teach it.

John is always “guessing” what he’s gonna do next. Even with all his musicianship and training, he has exercised his instinct to stay sharp above everything else. That’s his “tick.”
That’s why we love him and that’s why he keeps getting better.
Noticed that too! I've learnt that playing well and clean has a lot to do with being relaxed through your playing, but he seems very anxious and Shakey. Not a criticism as much as observation, even my own confusion, because he's obviously amazing!
That's one of the best ways I've ever heard it put. Everything about John makes him look like the anti-rock star: he's reserved, dresses simply, doesn't always look comfortable performing. And then he hits the first note of a solo and you realise you're in the presence of a musical genius

It is hard to argue who the greatest guitarist is. But Frusciante has to be right up there. I know people will have their own opinions on it, and that is absolutely fine. We are allowed to have our opinions. But for me, personally. John is the greatest to ever play. I am glad we got to keep him, and he didn't completely self-destruct. God bless this man
