  • This video is part 4 in our series covering the engine rebuild on this 1970 Hindustan Ambassador Mark 2. In this video the pistons were disassembled from the engine and inspected for wear, damage etc. It was found that, as is, the piston to wall clearance was on the edge of specification as per Morris Oxford engine specifications (MGA and MGB engines can run a much looser piston to bore clearance compared to the Morris based engines). The rod bearing were also found to be damaged and thus will be replaced. Next, the condition of the small end was also analyzed: measuring the piston pin, pin bore, rod bushing ID etc. For the nerds: this Ambassador has a bush type conrod as opposed to the bolt/clamped con rod found on the MGA, Morris Oxford series 4, 5 and 3 (also the Ambassador Mark 1 and early Mark 2s). It was found that the pin to bushing clearance was above spec. Sourcing a set of new bushings turned out to be challenging and thus it was decided to reuse them. The oil pump was also worn and it was decided to get new rotors for it (as per the MGB manual, the oil pump on the MGB was identical to this Ambassador).
Next, the cylinders were honed. The result was quite satisfactory. Most scratches in the cylinder were gone only leaving a couple on cylinder 3 and 4 that could barely be felt by hand. The crosshatching too looked great! The final piston to bore clearance came out to be 0.07mm to 0.1mm. This is over the recommended specification but it was decided to reuse the pistons (primarily due to the unavailability of STD size pistons).

For the international viewers, it is interesting to note how similar (if not identical) these engines are to the MG MGA, MGB, Morris Mini, Morris Oxford series 3,4,5, and many other British cars (with BMC B series engines). Although not a expert guide, theses videos can definitely be used as reference by anybody building these engines.
