  • This video is Part 5 in our series covering the engine rebuild on this 1970 Hindustan Ambassador Mark 2. The video covers the assembly, pre-assembly inspection and the first start of the BMC B Series engine. Before beginning the assembly, essential clearances like the piston to wall clearance, piston ring to groove clearance, ring end gap etc was measured to ensure the best possible working of the engine. Quite a few of the clearances mentioned were measured to be out of spec on our engine (on the looser side). However, given the use case, it was was decided to go ahead with these clearances, as, to correct theses values would involve getting a rebore and new pistons etc., which was beyond the scope of this build.
Speaking of new components, the Ambassador Mark 2 engine was reassembled with new piston rings, oil pump rotors, big end bearings, valves and valve guides, fuel pump, points, condenser, distributor rotor, spark plug leads and plugs and other miscellaneous gaskets etc. Although the build was laden with challenges like the rocker shaft studs failing when torqued to spec, oil pump rotors not fitting correctly into the housing, fuel pump refusing to pump fuel, carburettor malfunctioning and the distributor acting up, hearing the car running made the work feel worthwhile!
This feeling however was short lived. Having resolved umpteen problems, when the moment of truth finally arrived, when we actually tried to drive the car, we were confronted with a bitter fact: the clutch was stuck (to the flywheel/pressure plate)!
But yeah, that's been the story of this Amby's engine rebuild (which actually hasn't concluded yet). Thank you for following along on this journey. If you would like to see more content of this nature, please Subscribe and consider following fixpaana on Instagram: www.instagram....
For the uninitiated Ambassador fans: the engine rebuild process undertaken here could be applied to all pre-Isuzu Hindustan Ambassador models: Ambassador Mark 1, Mark 2, Mark 3 and Mark 4 as well.
For the international viewers, it is interesting to note how similar (if not identical) these engines are to the MG MGA, MGB, Morris Mini, Morris Oxford series 3,4,5, and many other British cars (with BMC B series engines). Although not a comprehensive guide, theses videos can definitely be used as reference by anybody building these engines.

I honestly do not know. Specifications wise, they both seem the same (the Amby mark 1 and 2 are exactly same as the Morris Oxford in terms of the engine). MOWOG engines I believe have a MOWOG lettering casted on the block and are made in the UK. Other than that, its the same engine in my opinion (only some slight changes I have observed by far are in the rocker arm shaft holders, Mk3/4 onwards they seem to have changed those). My car has a Mark 4 head most likely.
