How a motorcycle starter clutch works ft. 1979 Honda CB750K
Unlike automotive starters with a throw-out solenoid mechanisms to engage and disengage the starter from the engine, motorcycle starters by design live constantly engaged with the engine. This being the case, there needs to be a mechanism that can engage the starter with the engine when the engine needs to be started and disengage once the engine is running under its own power. Enter the Starter Clutch!
The starter clutch is the component that does exactly that: spin the crankshaft when the rider presses the starter button and slip once the engine starts running. This video goes over how the starter clutch manages to engage and disengage with minimum moving parts!
The magic can be attributed to the design of the slots and spring loaded rollers that live inside the starter clutch. Watch the video to see how that happens. And subscribe to fixpaana for more!
Starter clutches are used on almost all motorcycles with electric starters and therefore the information shared here apply to all motorcycles. The motorcycle used in this demonstration is the 1979 Honda CB750.

    Awesome. What I've done in my mk1 is install an electric pump with a switch in the same line as the mechanical pump. So I prime it with the switch if I don't start the car for a few days. My car has twin carburetors so it'll take a long time cranking the mechanical pump if the float bowls are dry.

    are you blowing on the air filter side or the side that sprays fuel in the combustion chamber?

      In the video I'm blowing it over the filter side. I.e. the intake manifold is the wood table on which the carbs sit.

    Can you do a video about Oil Filter changing in BMC Engine Ambassador? Is the both filters in BMC petrol and BMC Diesel are same?

      I have not worked on the BMC diesel yet. They mostly will be different. The one on Petrol engine is on the left side of the engine in front of the distributor. The petrol one has a "bottle" type filter housing with the filter element in the center. When refitting, the bottle ha to be filled at least half (or more if you can manage to fit it without spilling the oil). Then the oil is filled from the top of the valve cover to the right level. And that's it. I have recoded footage of oil and filter change but need to edit and upload it. Will do it soon. Good luck!

      Ideally, yes! This was a trick question though. In a situation like this (reusing the rotors), you must reinstall them the way the came out. I.e. if the marks were facing inwards then they must be reinstalled in the same orientation.

    What’s the mileage you are getting after the rebuild?? Please reply because I’m getting only 6 after rebuilding

      Note: This was not a rebuild. I will call it more of a refurbish. That said, I'm getting around 8kmpl. 6 Sounds low. A good engine should give in the 9 ish range (our used to give earlier). You should check the carburettor setting (spark plugs are the first place to check, if they have too much carbon that means the engine is running rich) and make sure there are no leaks in the tank or the fuel line.

      Tbh I didn't explain 😄 but the principle is that a CV carb I.e. constant velocity carb is designed to keep the air velocity within the carb throat (venturi) constant across all rpms. So what you see sliding is the piston that is lifted by the vacuume produced during the intake stroke. The lift of the piston increses the opening that the incomig air sees thus as vaccume increases the piston rises and makes sure that the speed of air rushing into the carb is held constanf. Instead of vacuume at yhe the intake side of the carb I have used pressure on the choke side (same thing in terms of airflow). If you compare to the non CV carb, the throttle itself operates the slide while on this type there is a throttle plate on the other side of the slide (not shown in this short) and slide moves independent of throttle input.

      @@gambeersagar6838 OHV = Over Head Valve. It's the name that was given to the Ambassador engine when it was introduced in 1958. The same engine was standard on Mark 1,2,3, and 4 as well.

      I honestly do not know. Specifications wise, they both seem the same (the Amby mark 1 and 2 are exactly same as the Morris Oxford in terms of the engine). MOWOG engines I believe have a MOWOG lettering casted on the block and are made in the UK. Other than that, its the same engine in my opinion (only some slight changes I have observed by far are in the rocker arm shaft holders, Mk3/4 onwards they seem to have changed those). My car has a Mark 4 head most likely.

    Our's Ambassador Car's whole braking system is also reconditioned. Master Cylinder, Brake Cylinders, fluid etc are changed. Now it is fine. Is this wheel cylinder jammed?

      Sorry, I am not selling the ones I have. But I think the case covers from the Hero Splendor or any Hero with this type of engine (pre-push start) should fit. If you are looking specifically for the "made in Japan" type ones, then that might be hard to find but scrap yards might be a good place to start.

It might even be worth buying a spare engine or maybe an entire bike and use it for parts in the future if it fits your budget and you have space for storage.

    What would be the average expense of petrol ambassador engine rework namely replacing pistons liners etc?

      It would depend on who you get to rebuild the engine, which machine shop you get the work done from and what all parts need replacing/machining. Reputed mechanics and machine shops will be more expensive but worth it in the long run as once the engine is done right, it will last a very long time. So it's a lot of variables that come into play. It's not super expensive to rebuild these engines as the parts are more readily available compared to other classic cars that need the parts to be imported. So it's difficult to estimate costs but a rebuild would easily be over 30k, again depending on the condition of the engine, availability and cost of parts (pistons, bearings, bushings etc) other difficult to predict factors

      Yeah brother, the engine is assembled and runs, however, faced a few problems with the fuel pump and carburettor. So have not been able to drive it yet. Will release an update video soon...
