And that's NOT what the black love folks talk about. It's the idea that simply having a husband, any man at all is supposed to be a good one. 🙄

Joan Morgan “When Chickenheads Come Home to Roost: A Hip-Hop Feminist Breaks It Down” changed my life. It help me find my identity as a black feminist who loves hip hop. I know for a fact I would have never even heard of the book if it wasn’t for you. I have a tremendous respect for your thought process & I sincerely thank you for putting yourself on this platform.

Hey Sis, thank you so much for this list and blessings to your academic pursuits! I am an Ed.D. student (and middle school teacher) and am finishing writing my dissertation. I wanted to say you can totally do a qualitative narrative. I studied othermothering (how Black women care for children as though they are their own) with Black female teachers who work in majority-White school districts. My dissertation is written in Black feminist autoethnography, so I was able to reflect on my own journey as a Black female educator in a White district, and how I connected to the subjects.

"If sexual relationships were de-prioritized as the basis for our most meaningful social ties, then one who you related to sexually might come to be of less pervasive social significance. Heterosexuality would then lose its privilege and non-sexual friendships would no longer be regarded as intrinsically less than sexual ones."
THIS. I have always felt so out of place for my inability to find the same intimacy in my romantic relationships as my friendships. The pressure to have intimacy or project this notion of closeness with someone because you are dating them and/or bumping bones has always felt weird to me. It had me thinking I was doing something wrong for the longest time.

    • @eevaluecom
      @eevaluecom 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Sex is such a small percentage of intimate relationships that I don't understand why we've attached such weight to these relationships. We DO NOT have to limit meaningful conversations, closeness, loving actions or inner desires to the person we choose to share our bodies with. There are way too many ppl in the world and influencing our lives daily for that to be sensible or practical. No wonder we are in unsatisfying relationships cuz we demand a number of experiences from a single person who will never be able to meet them all.

Right now I’m really into my Caribbean (Jamaican) and African roots regarding spirituality. I’m currently reading
“Creole Religions of the Caribbean: An Introduction from Vodou and Santeria to Obeah and Espiritismo” by Margarite Fernandez Olmos. It’s very interesting particularly on the development of “creolized religions and practices. I’m also reading “Becoming” because duh lol. “Sistah Vegan: Food, Identity, Health, and Society: Black Female Vegans Speak” by A. Breeze Harper because food plays a part in our ability to advocate for ourselves and our community.

I read 10 books last year. The one that still sticks with me is "Heavy" by Kiese Laymon. I'm still thinking about his raw transparency. All the books you picked look really life-changing and enlightening. As for me, it will be all about fantasy, fantasy, fantasy this year. With the current climate in this here Americas I need a break from the real real. I'm currently reading "The Mothers" by Brit Bennett. It's really good so far. I'm really looking forward to Marlon James' "Black Leopard, Red Wolf" that will be released this year. This is supposed to be like an African Game of Thrones. I also want to read "Children of Blood and Bone" by Tomi Adeyemi.

Girl, that's a dense reading list! I commend your grind. All of my to reads are on goodreads. You should setup an account. Helps me to organize all of my past reads, to reads, books owned, etc. Two fictional recs, "She Would Be King" by Wayétu Moore. It's magical realism meets historical fiction. I'm trying to stretch myself with magical realism and not just be annoyed by the curve balls. Also I'm currently reading "Children of Blood and Bone" by Tomi Adeyemi.

Like when 2 baby moma's help each other, play cousins, aunties, etc. Trans aunties helping with the special prom moment, summers in the south with grandma, being taken in by big sisters, grandmama's, aunties. Producing incredible kids in 'Merica AS SEPARATE HOUSEHOLD COUPLES! We don't give ourselves enough credit for our inventivness & compassion.

Yo! I totally recommend "Silver Sparrow" by Tayari Jones.
That book was much better (in my humble opinion) than American Marriage. It speaks to the theme of Black women not receiving the reciprocity they are owed in marriages. I went through ALL the feels reading that book. It's a good kee kee even if you don't stop to dissect it.

I just finished medical apartheid, it discusses the history of experimentation and exploitation of the black body and how it led to many medical advances that black people now rarely see the benefit of. A very interesting read for me as someone who wants to go into the healthcare field but it does a good job of explaining the medical terminology for those that aren't as familiar

Barracoon renewed my interest in Zora Neale Hurston. I'm currently reading a Hurston biography, Wrapped in Rainbows, by Valerie Boyd. Once I finish the biography, I plan to read Zora's autobiography and also purchase the collection of her novels and stories. My plan for the year is to read/reread Toni Morrison and Zora Neale Hurston. We'll see how well that goes. I usually get distracted by TH-cam & Instagram book recommendations. I highly recommend The Street by Ann Petry. I read it a couple of weeks ago, and I'm still shook.

I read the Baldwin book last year. I really enjoy his humor, wit, sporadic darkness and verbal eloquence

New commenter: I just graduated with my Ph.D. In WGS and I'm trying to reeducate my self now that's it over. I just checked out Beyond Respectability by Brittney Cooper. I also read Eloquent Rage which you mentioned. I need more of the historical Black feminism, and I love what the contemporary Black feminists are writing too. Good luck on this journey!

I loveeeee Too Heavy a Load. I read it my freshmam yr of undergrad and it was my first real in-depth introduction to the vast contribution of Black women throughout history! Reading it made me angry that I was never even remotely taught of any of these stories but at the same time I had never been so inspired in my life. It just actualized so many things for me as far as history and being a black women in this work of being agents of change and activism. Andddd theres tea about other black men activists at the time from stories their wives told 👀 lol

This video and the 2018 booklist that you just posted are immeasurably valuable! I work at a book store but I don't read nearly as many black works as I want to. Pleeeeease do everything in your power to start a book club!

dear jouelzy, i knw u mentioned before that not enough of us watch these videos...but sis, i look forward to them every yr! abd have added all the recs to my book list if they werent there already.
a book im reading now is, "a wild feminine". discusses and explores how women who were biologically women should bring more awareness to the strength n power of their bodies. so far, im loving it. i thk its a great read for women who may not be as intuitive with thwir bodies (often bc of shame bc to sexualization of ur body or lack of education of female anatomy).

I read Barracoon based on your recommendation and I loved it. I just finished The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson and I am obsessed. It’s about the great migration from the south. It reads as a history book but follows three individuals and their personal experiences. I recommend it to everyone. I plan to read Becoming soon.

I know most people don’t like romance but Alyssa Cole’s Reluctant Royals series is such a fun read. It helps me read heavier books as well.
