@@robertwright4220 'females'... yes it is worse. It's misogyny within a society that is itself misogynistic. A society that is relentlessly abusive to women in which women are killed every day. You cannot keep locker room talk in the locker room - you influence younger men, you carry it with you in your attitude towards and treatment of women. Only men think they can compartmentalise their prejudice.

I think it happens because there is no culturally recognizable blueprint for holding men responsible for this type of behavior. It takes a level of imagination and deep uncomfortable thinking that most people are not used to, to even get the ball rolling. But outside of it being an individual/community issue I think it’s also a matter of systemic failure in helping to solve the problem. The only repercussions men face when they behave harmfully in relationships is when it gets intense and evolves into physical violence. Those repercussions take the form of going to prison if it even gets to that point, and we all know prison doesn’t transform men or anybody into better people, or mild public shaming that rarely impacts their pockets.

@@kaylad1669 This. I'm tired of, when women, but especially black women, give other women advice (good advice, too) about dating and relationships, everyone jumps to say they're being jealous or bitter or putting them down. So many of us can SEE this man's attitude for what it is and we are saying so. I remember watching Tia through the years with her husband and I could SEE he didn't want to be there. She was in love with that man, but he was not in love with her. I see the same in pictures with Simone and her husband. Where she's all smiles and hugging up on him and looking at him like he's the last spoonful of ice cream on a hot day... and he's kind of just there. Like, an ornament. The way things are going, they will not last if she wakes up or HE decides he doesn't want to be in it, anymore. Because anyone who speaks on their woman like that in public doesn't respect her or care about her in the way he should. That is plain as day to see. Simone just doesn't want to see it and thinks we are all jealous. Like, girl, I didn't even know who your man was UNTIL y'all got married. I still don't really know who he is and am not that interested in finding out.

I've spoken on Mrs. Biles before (unfortunately, the respect I had for her has been tarnished a bit by all this)... all I can say is I hope she doesn't come out of this with heartbreak or having a bunch of kids from a man who, let's be honest, most likely sees her as beneath him because she's darker or just not his preference. Though I'm sure all this criticism will make him act better. I feel for women who are pick mes because, while they MIGHT get picked, they do it at the cost of their self esteem. You are a GOAT, no man should have you acting like this or feeling less than. That's just wild, to me, because I'll never be on her level, but I would not tolerate someone embarrassing me in public like he did (this wasn't just poor talking, he was hitting a lot of podcast bro stuff, lol). I won't fight to defend some wild stuff he said about me. Like, can't stop you from thinking it, but to SAY it where others can hear it? What decent man would ever think to even do that? But when your ultimate goal is getting married and to your preference, you will put yourself down to make sure you get it and keep it. And that fact that he lied about not knowing who she was, likely to humble her, that right there is a huge no. How you know about Gabby Douglas (and apparently said some unkind things about her), but you knew NOTHING about the most talked about gymnast in who knows how long? And the fact that Simone believed it. And I would never get with someone who says they were fighting the relationship with me, because that means I was running at him while he was running away from me. Just insane. He married her for the clout; don't care what anyone says.
And with the way dating is now, and the available choices, oh, I'm staying single if this is the type of mess you have to put up with. And I guess I'm hating because I'm going t call a pick me a pick me. We might all be trying to be picked, but some of us (who have been to therapy and gotten boundaries and standards) won't just let anyone pick us. I do know some advice goes too far, but wanting better for black women is what I see a lot of advice doing. It probably could do without the name calling, but I also think a lot of y'all feel shamed over simple advice that would actually be beneficial. Like, I see women being called "bitter" for telling women to have standards (she's jealous, too, if she isn't in a relationship while saying this, lol)... yeah, if you're feeling shamed by that, that's the least of your problems.

Simone is a very beautiful, talented, and accomplished girl, but let's bffr its very clear she's not that confident in her looks or has the best self esteem. Being with a guy that keeps emphasizing over and over and over again that SHE had to chase down HIM and that he would've never looked her way is crazy. And my opinions of him were solidified when she went on Kevin and Keenan's show and said that he REFUSES to admit that she's a better athlete than him, even tho she killed his workout routine but he struggled with hers. That they apparently argued so much over the topic that they promised to not bring it up ever again after they got married. Like what??? And the fact that they still bring it up anyway and he still argues that they're athletic equals....
Now, i don't think he hates her like how others have expressed, but i don't know if I'd bet they'd last forever, especially now with the public against him. But simone loves her a bright yellow man (her exes look the same) and she gonna stick beside him

I think calling her a pick me or mannish or aggressive is misognoir at its best. Frankly the issue isn’t him calling himself a catch. That could be playfully cute and if she was more interested in him in the beginning than he was in her, who cares. Yes she’s Simone Biles but I am sure she wants someone who likes her for her and not just her accomplishments.
The problem is that he seemed really comfortable with putting her down and she backed him up in it. Also when the host said their skin color was a part of it, and he went along with it, it’s blatant colorism and the devaluing of dark skin Black women. She isn’t a pick me, she’s being dimmed by the same misogyny that all women experience. That our achievements have to be made lesser in order to make men feel more comfortable. She has insecurities that she unfortunately made very public and that do send a bad message to the young girls that look up to her, but it wasn’t intentional and she’s allowed to be an imperfect human being.

Never considered Jonathan being a Safety, meaning he isn't even at the top of his own field and why he might be prone not to big up his wife, I even missed how the one interviewer gave him a chance to clean things up and he continued down the same path posturing himself as the catch she had to work hard to get. Your take was the one we were all missing from this conversation. Well said.

One of Aesop's fables basically goes,
"Once upon a time a lion was trying to eat a goat, the goat headbutted him, and he got angry. How dare his food have the ability to cause him harm? So, he declares that all animals with horns must leave the kingdom the next day. All of the animals with horns fearfully planned where they'd move the next day, and so did the hare. He spent the night unable to sleep, and finally rushed to pack his things. The next day, he walked out of his burrow and said to his friend, the grasshopper, "I'm off, my neighbor. My ears are too much like horns to be comfortable here." "Horns?!" the grasshopper shouts, "you no more have horns than I do!" "Say what you want," the hare replies, "were my ears only half as long as they are, they would be quite long enough for any one to lay hold of who wished to make them out to be horns." Respectability and desirability politics for black women is just a long game of tamping your ears down and hoping no one decides they're horns that day. There is really no relationship worth that level of manipulation and chaos imo. I'm gay as hell so I might be biased but like,

I think about how this clip would have been seen differently if Simone was light skin, with light eyes, and “good hair” etc? If Simone and him were seen as more equally attractive, would this have just been a cute/funny story about how Simone flipped gender roles on their head? What if Simone looked like Zendaya? How would that affect our reaction to that clip?
I think the reaction might have been different, and I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing. I’m not talking about the silly reaction of blaming Simone for her man’s bad behavior. I mean considering his response “bad behavior” at all.
If Simone looked like Zendaya (I am NOT saying Simone isn’t attractive) then the public would place she and her husband on a similar playing field of attractiveness, and it might not feel so much like he’s “punching down” with that story. Because right now it feels like he’s saying “do you see my wife who isn’t necessarily the Eurocentric standard of beauty? Yeah her? I didn’t even want her ass.” And it’s like uhhh??? Do you need to be saying all that? But if she WAS the Eurocentric standard of beauty, and he was saying “do you see her?? I didn’t even want her!!!” We might be more likely to laugh at how silly of a notion that is, and at Simone taking on a more masculine posture in courting him. I think we would see it as cute or at the very least harmless for him to say that.
But because we all have a sense that Simone is up against these beauty standards to begin with, it feels very harmful for the person who should be her biggest fan to say anything disparaging about her desirability. I think we have the sense that he should be trying to offset the idea that she isn’t the beauty standard by propping her up.
This leads me to my next thought about this: what if…and hear me out…what if, the fact that the two of them DO think this is a worthy story of telling over and over again…means both of them DO see her as more desirable, and this story as harmless because to them, it’s absurd of him to act like he wasn’t falling all over himself to be with her. Maybe..just maybe..this ridiculous story is a sign that to him, she is the prize and so it’s harmless for him to tell this story because in his mind it should be abundantly clear to the audience that she’s the catch, and that he was being a bonehead in the beginning.
Do I believe that to be true? Not at all. I think for some reason he feels the need to remind everyone that he’s the conventionally attractive one, that he wasn’t a fanboy because he has value, and he’s all too ready to shit on her to make his point. I think Simone is blind to this because of trauma that’s causing her to be pulled towards someone who reaffirms her fears about herself.
But that’s all speculation. Wtf do I know, these people are strangers to me.
@jouelzy I love you girl, keep the content coming!!!!
