    Always love your passion for learning and exposing others to the wealth of knowledge that is out there to grab and absorb. Being Australian we don’t have black history month here but I love that having access to you and other American booktubers brings these amazing works to light. Time to hit up the library. Have an amazing Black History Month ❤️📚

    I love these suggestions. I am Haitian as well and read one of Edwidge Danticat's book in University. It was Breath, Eyes, Memory. A very heartbreaking but great story about a young Haitian girl who moves to New York. Love your videos

    This video is so great! I completely agree that The Fire This Time and The Fire Next Time should be required reading and should be read together. I am inspired to go pick up more Jesamyn Ward and James Baldwin ASAP

    I’ve been looking for books to read to and with my children. We homeschool and we agree that banned and omitted books especially are the books we need to read. History has more than one side to it’s telling and I really appreciate your list and your opinions are valuable to this homeschool Mom. Thank you very much!

    Great video! Warmth of Other Sons was soooo great. I listened to it. It was my parents (and countless others) leaving one part of the country and adjusting to another. Even mentioned the church in Chicago at which they met. Thanks!

    I read the Warmth of other Suns over the summer. It's a really good read so intriguing it took me about 2 weeks. I have The Fire Next Time can't wait. Thanks for sharing!

      Yay I’m excited to finally read it and get over the number of pages. The Fire next time I feel is good mainly because of it being a classic reference, but I did prefer the Fire this time more.

    Hey, new subscriber here!!! 👋🏾. I love your channel 😊
    I’m half way through The Warmth of Other Suns. I absolutely love this book. It’s sad, happy, humbling, motivating, educational and definitely thought provoking. If it weren’t for my taking African American related courses in college and reading books like these, I would not be able to comprehend the full impact of slavery on the world and black culture.

    • @LEFTONREAD

      Hey Erika! Thanks so much! And you and me both (half way through The Warmth) Its a long story, but I was enjoying the read so much I returned my library rental and ordered the book online, well that was interesting! Lol but it is finally here so I have re picked up where I left off!

    Thank you for such a comprehensive list. I'm saving this video for reference. I loved Homegoing and Danticat's Harvesting of Bones, as well as The Black Jacobins. Did you ever read The Black Count? It's about Alexandre Dumas's
    father - raised in Haiti and later became a general in Napoleon's army. I LOVE that book. I have Ayiti on my tbr

  • @veecel
    @veecel 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Two notes:
    1. I also heard nothing but great things about the Warmth of the other Sums, I'll probably read it next month.
    2. There are so many Haitian-American/Canadian/French authors out there . . . we (you, I, all of us) need to dig a little further . . . and maybe learn French or Spanish. We are every where.
    Thanks for sharing. I'm reading "The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks"

    • @LEFTONREAD
      @LEFTONREAD  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      2. There really are sooooo many! I have only read books In English but reading a book in French would be a crazy cool goal. And wow never read the rebellious life. Is it good so far?

    • @veecel
      @veecel 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      LEFT ON READ so far so good, it’s a political biography of Mrs. Rosa Parks as a radical firebrand not as the often portrayed quiet southerner on the bus.

  • @WhereintheworldisLeahJane
    @WhereintheworldisLeahJane 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I LOVED The Warmth of Other Suns! Wilkerson weaves in individual stories with broader facts well and the narratives have really stuck with me. I was ecstatic to see it is going to be getting adapted by Shonda Rhimes into an 8 part series. The only critique I would make is the introductory notes ahead of each chapter can occasionally get repetitive, like many nonfiction books.
    I do think there would be so much to discuss with folks after reading it and would definitely tune in to a liveshow on it!

    You mention that you were from Haitian descent and how hard it is to find books about the history. I would highly recommend 1804 which is about Haitian history and revolution. I’m not sure if you’re into documentaries but if you are that’s a Great documentary to look into. One of the bests I’ve seen!

    warmth of other suns is a really good book and it's really worth reading (it's american, so if you're american, definitely, but if not, only if you're interested in modern america) but omg does she repeat herself, this drove me up the wall so bad for so long, i felt one third of that book needed excising. She does it: statement, paragraph expanding, repeat. Or repeats it a few pages on. Certain sentences reappear just every so often. One man works on the train, if i read 'his work took him north and south, from freedom to jim crow law zone and back' once, i read it two or three hundred times. So it's like a ten out of ten book with a huge nasty drawback, but you do get used to it. I actually bought it - i never buy books - for my father, and he didn't mind this. Nobody else has mentioned it in any reviews. But it's worth expecting it because i was expecting this so amazing five star book and i nearly gave up so many times. In all other ways it is that five star book. Her level of research and her way of doing it and the amount of work she put in are amazing.
    me, i'm reading Congo, that long history book that came out about ten years ago, the hardback has an incredible cover that's a piece of modern art, but i'm reading it on kindle as i do with all backbreakingly heavy books. My plan is to read it over a whole year, bit by bit, which i always do with hard difficult long books - warmth of other suns isn't that, and a quarter of its pages are bibliography - trying to force yourself to read such books as if they were YA is setting yourself up to fail, i feel. The important trick is, to keep coming back to it regularly. Congo's big problem is lousy maps, too small, not enough detail, and not enough of them or near enough the page. Such books should come either with maps, or with a map book you buy separately, in proper full colour and scale, as an optional extra for the truly enthusiastic.

    Great recs! Im going to start with Homegoing since i have that on my shelf, but you listed so many great ones. I definitely want to read more from Jesmyn Ward - ive only read Sing Unburied Sing so far. I also want to read all of Chimamanda's writings, only have read the Feminist Manifesto. Have you read many of hers? If so which one would you recommend i read next?

    • @LEFTONREAD
      @LEFTONREAD  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you and yes Homegoing is an amazing start! Happy reading think you will love it. For Jesmyn Ward I am biased but you cannot go wrong with whichever you choose next. For Chimamanda I’ve read manifesto and we should all be feminists. As for her larger books like Americanah that people rave about, I have not read so cannot recommend.

      I may check out the warmth on audio 🤔 . Hmmm I will have to decide. I currently have a poll on my community channel going, will give it like a day or so before I announce. It’s currently somewhat split so I may do both.

    Thanks for the great reviews. I'm a Chicano from L.A. and lately I've been wanting to read more novels by Black and Brown women. I got nieces and they definitely don't have good role models yet so until then I'd like to expose them to greatness. Do you have any other suggestions?

    I'm so excited to pick these up!! Have you read Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds? It's a fiction story written in verse about a boy who's lost his brother to gang violence. I think you may really like it (that is if you haven't read it already ☺️)

    Hi!! I watched the Black booktube chat. It was awesome. You mentioned being confused at the ending of A Long Way Down. Omg!! I was confused too. Did you figure it out?

      LuvBooksAndWines 😩😂 Omg so it is not just me!!! Lol For me the book was open ended, so I am GUESSING the author wanted us to decide if he decided to go through with it or not 🤷🏾‍♀️.

    I'm a former educator, why do you think Eng lit, is taught more than African American literature? People who contributed to our arts and knowledge. We have to come up with our own curriculum.

We only kw American black history from 1600's. Go back further, trace the ship's. Look up the names on the slave ships. Arab slave trade sold us to Christians.
