  • 🌟 Hey everyone! Welcome to this detailed pedal steel guitar tutorial. In this video, I'll be walking you through the intricate nuances of the first melody and Jerry's initial solo break from the album version of 'Shady Grove' with Grisman. While there may be a few minute details not covered, this lesson will give you a comprehensive understanding of this iconic piece.
    🎼 Jerry's playing is renowned for its dynamic range and unique timing, and that's what we're diving into today. Although I've tried to capture every aspect, it's possible that some parts might be played in a different position, but rest assured, you're getting the essence of the piece. There are a couple more breaks in the song, and I'm hoping to cover them in future lessons. I wanted to share this with you while it's fresh in my mind.
    💡 If you find value in this lesson and it enhances your playing, I would be grateful for a small donation of just ONE DOLLAR, if you can spare it. Every contribution, no matter how small, supports me in bringing more content like this to you.

    Thanks Josh, been aware of this song for years as 'Matty Groves' by English band Fairport Convention and saw Billy Strings cover it the other in Glasgow, Scotland, so came looking on TH-cam for a breakdown & yours was awesome 👍

      Yup... obviously everyone plays this differently but I had not seen a real accurate one for how they do it.

    A very informative lesson! Jerry Garcia doing Shady Grove is definitely a niche thing, but as you demonstrated, it’s as technically challenging as Doc Watson. He and Tony Rice had it going on the Pizza Tapes as well!
    I reckon Doc had immense respect for both of them.
    Thanks for the break down.

    I know this has been up a while, but I just wanted to add my thanks and let you know how it's helped. I love Jerry's articulation on this, that punchy staccato. That's been tricky for me.

    thanks for breaking it down, it would be helpful if you could play the solo all the way through once, then we could always just slow it down if needed.

    Any chance of getting the tab for your version?

    • @JoshYenne
      @JoshYenne  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For some reason on the app I can’t even really see what video you’re talking about. But no I really abhor writing out tab so unless someone else does it I apologize but I just try to talk through it clearly on the video. 😀

    What backing track are you using with this?

    • @JoshYenne

  • @haggishead7558

    Why free? Do you usually charge for this?

    • @JoshYenne
      @JoshYenne  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes actually.. I do music full time for a living and I teach a couple days as part of that. So I charge for lessons. Also a lot of these videos on my site have been conscripted by people that want to figure out a part. I do the videos for them, and I have to charge them for my time but I charge less than I should if they permit me to also put the videos up here on my site for all to learn from. So if you are interested yup I definitely produce personalized lessons for free thank you for asking! :-)

    Would really love to see the strumming pattern in at least one video on TH-cam this is brutal

    • @JoshYenne
      @JoshYenne  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The thing is if you are thinking of anything as a “strumming pattern“ you are already looking at it wrong. Do you have any good teachers near you? Because that’s just a bad way to look at things that’s why people do not put them up mostly. Just learn some good technique and you never ever have to think about “strumming pattern“.

    • @JoshYenne
      @JoshYenne  ปีที่แล้ว

      A year later and I saw this... I sure hope Mrtwitch22 found a good teacher and I pray is not thinking anymore about "strumming pattern" (which consequently is the ONLY phrase that is actually banned in my teaching studio cause it is SUCH a bad way to look at it)

    It’d be great if you’d just play it slowly over and over.

    • @JoshYenne
      @JoshYenne  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's really easy to get a free "looper" for TH-cam and slowing it down is built right into the browser! its a great idea to do that to really get it for sure! I highly encourage that.
