You know what? A year ago I thought I could never play this. It seemed too hard, too fast, too technical for an older guitar newbie like me. But I worked hard at it. I watched this video every now and again to practice. Now it's a whole year later, and after some hard work, discipline and hours of playing along to this video, I still can't bloody play it. I think I need to pick up the bongos or triangle or something.
My suggestion for everyone reading this comment is to: split the song up into 2-3 chords at a time practice each section at 50% (use a metronome) once the shapes and patterns feel normal, speed the song up to 75%. Then once that feels more normal, speed up to 90% then 100% and then 105%. After 105%, 100% will feel easy.
I'm about a week into learning this. I'm just playing it over and over very slowly and having fun. I don't care how long it takes for me to get all the picking/strumming/vocals. This is one of my all-time favorite bluegrass tunes, and I love the Grisman Garcia version so much! Learning the guitar so late in life has taught me that you just can't rush through things--it works best when you just enjoy the process and eventually you'll be looking back and saying, "wow, look how far I've come already!" Thanks, Marty!
The simplicity of this song and these licks is what makes this such a fun one to play. Doesn't take much to sound like you know what you're doing. Thanks for the lesson, Marty!
Marty your videos have always been so inspirational. The fact you always start with a near-complete playthrough in full-visibility. Marty, you're all we need!
I've been playing this song, just like Marty describes here, for many years. Lately though, i've been putting in an F maj for the last two beats of the D min before it goes to the C the 2nd time. If you watch any video of Tony Rice playing it, you'll see he does just that. There is a Tony Rice lesson where he says he has never heard it without the F( and that's after pizza tapes). I'm fairly convinced they do the F in pizza tapes, too ... though it's tough to catch. Now that i've been playing it with the F for a while, it seems like it's missing something if you omit the F.
My Dad has always argued with me saying there's an F chord as well, and the F chord is "implied" in the picking. So I'm gonna have to go with Tony Rice and My Dad on this one lol! Like you, I've got to make myself start putting that F chord in there.
I bought your Beginner Acoustic Guitar Lessons Package Several Years back. Forgot about it for a Bit. Now, picked it back up to learn. I Love your Way of Teaching. I Recommend your DVDs to all my Friends. Thank You. I don't want to write a letter, so that is it for now.
Thank you, very Grateful for the lesson! I literally just got a copy of the pizza tapes off amazon several weeks ago. More dead please! Stumbled upon the old ripple video the other day too.
Hope you had a great Thanksgiving with your family. Great tune, please do more such tunes like Celtic Folk/Rock. Would like more Hollow Body guitar reviews like the Ibanez AM-53 etc.
Beauty thanks Marty! Been trying to learn this for a couple weeks and was getting a bit frustrated with my speed but then came upon the Grisman Garcia tape where they first played this jamming at David Grissmans house, just hanging out by themselves getting high and playing, and Gerry comes upon Shady grove while David Grissman is phoning a buddy to come over and when David comes back Gerrys stoked to play it. When David hits the part you call a "tack" he stops , looks, try it again, then says what you doing, try it again then says, "that's kinda hard" Gerry laughs and says I love this song we gotta play it and I guess the rest is history , but it to hear David Grisman say its kinda hard should give us all inspiration. Sorry for being so long winded but I love this song too! Thanks dude , your the man!
Hey Marty.. So cool of you to do this song. I remember when this album came out, it was such a breath of fresh air and for those of us, in the infamous "know", it was so special to have this personal, intimate snap shot into Jerry.. Thanks again.. As a P.S. For me (and I am sure thousands of others) as an intermediate (and growing) guitar player your lessons and approach to teaching has opened up my skill set and allowed me to improve all aspects of my playing. Please keep it coming. Incidentally, it would be really amazing if you could possibly do an Elliott Smith song or two.. I know it might not get the most views, but for those of us who'd appreciate it, it would be a really big deal and hugely appreciated.. Obviously, whatever you want, but maybe "Miss Misery", Waltz #2, Pitseleh might be a good starting point, or whatever you think. I know translating songs into teachable lessons is sometimes a challenge you have to "unlock" (see Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You) I'm guessing one of Elliott's song might bring this process and challenge you at a whole new level. Whatever you decide Marty. I'll be here anyway. Thanks again...
Yes, Marty!! Well done, and as always, love the dead influenced jams you share. Jerry and Dawg threw down some of my most. Favorite tunes. This is awesome!!! 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
Brilliant! Thanks Marty! Your legendary version of this song with Tony Brucco has unfortunately been removed from the net. It was always a joy to watch.
Amazing like always keep up the good work marty im 13 and i started playing when i was r when was about 9 i found you and you really helped me along, thanks ,cj
Nice job on an old folksong. Nice pace for teaching. I do like to add the F chord on the 2nd half, more like Doc Watson. Lots of diffferent ways to play this one. A great tune for jamming. :)
Hey man, found this cool rock song with a pretty awesome intro and thought you might like it. It’s called “crosses” by asg. No need to make a tutorial, just thought it sounded cool and wanted to share! Thanks for the videos dude, learning a ton!
Marty have you ever been a guitar teacher or just the online song tutorials....love the channel man, I would love to see something from buckethead but an updated little wing would add some views for sure
Hey Marty my name is Jerrod and ive been watching your videos since i was 17. I can honestly say that any skill i have on the guitar is thanks to you, and I do thank you for it. My reason for writing is that ive hit a speed bump these last months and it feels like i havnt got any better. Ive been playing for years and have only been able to play simple songs and have never really gotten past that beginner stage. Was hoping that you could offer any advice on the subject, it would be very much appreciated. If not no biggy, ill keep watching as long as you keep posting videos!!
Great lesson. I am a huge fan of yours. That whole album is amazing. I have been looking for a good wind and rain and thrill is gone, but especially wind and rain. Would you consider doing wind and rain lesson?
Hey Marty. Great channel! All your videos are amazing. you break even complicated things down easily. Anyway I was thinking a Garcia Band "Comes A Time" would be awesome for acoustic lesson.
I love when I find songs I’m trying to learn that you already have a video for. How about Casey Jones, not the Grateful Dead, but the Jerry’s cover of Mississippi John hurt? The fingerpicking is tough for a no talent hack like me to figure out.
Marty! I see you dig BlueGRASS! Almost ROLLED right past this video, glad I didnt. Going to FIRE this lesson up right now! More SMOKIN' Jerry Garcia/David Grisman licks would be greatly appreciated! :)
Hey Marty, another amazing video. Happy late thanksgiving and you have taught me all the songs I know. You are amazing and my aunt wants me to play her a song called angles flying to close to the ground, and I was wondering if you could do a video on it. I hope you read this.
Hi Marty it's Ian from Australia mate god spilt his whole supply of grooviness when he was making you I can see it pouring out. I'll tell you a couple of things Marty my friend.I played off and on for years. I didn't seem to improve untill I was online one day I found this Marty dude and all of a sudden the penny just started dropping Just the way you explain things I got ya straight away. Marty can I ask you something how do you control yourself being so groovy if I could do what you do I honestly think I would explode the more I improve the more I'm obsessed it's like a sickness you never wanna get better. The first time I surprised myself that was it hook Line and sinker ADDICTED. If you get time ild love you to say hi just so I know you're out there and can you let me know are the problems I'm have normal or am I going nuts or do I need a little guitar rehab heeee and Thank you Marty for some reason you seem to take the frustration out of it for me. I'm might be strange but guitars have done funny things to me since I'm a kid I feel like I should be playing there's something in there Marty since I've been watching you and learning it's stronger than ever . I'll never be a rockstar Marty my friend left that to late but if I could be confident with a guitar and play music that will do me .We can't all be as groovy as marty but half be plenty thanks mate sorry about raving on but what your doing is cool dude. I'll be it touch take care say hi if you get time C U Ian
Hey Marty. I''m a huge fan of what you do. I would like to request "'my kind"' from Kip Moore or any other song that he do. There''s not a lot of lessons for his songs and he has great songs. All the way from South-Africa

Just watched the video to see how it’s played. I know I’m not good enough
You know what? A year ago I thought I could never play this. It seemed too hard, too fast, too technical for an older guitar newbie like me. But I worked hard at it. Dont give up! 🤜🏼💚🤛🏼
Hey, have you made any progress?
You just need the tabs. Sometimes it’s too hard to learn just by watching someone else play it on guitar. I need visual aids as well.
Why Zen? Hey there’s always the cow bell option too....
My suggestion for everyone reading this comment is to:
split the song up into 2-3 chords at a time
practice each section at 50% (use a metronome)

More Bluegrass!
More upvotes on this!
Keep it country!
More bluegrass indeed!
More bluegrass

Great attitude and well said.
The simplicity of this song and these licks is what makes this such a fun one to play. Doesn't take much to sound like you know what you're doing. Thanks for the lesson, Marty!
I️ saw David Grisman and Tommy Emanuel live last week and they played this song. I’ve always loved this song and I’m so glad I️ can learn it now.
Billy Strings does a great cover of this. Adds a F and AM chord in the mix. Great tune and thanks as always Marty!
This is the correct answer he’s missing the f on the second Barr around

Jeff p agreed
I agree 100% gotta have that F chord in there before the C
Hey! A Billy Strings "Watch it Fall" lesson would be sweet!

Brilliant! That cracked me up because my mate used to sing the chords out to me when I was a borstal boy learning guitar from him... thanks so much!

AHHH MARTY! Great choice, one of my favorite songs to play on acoustic & sing! That mountain modal feel

This is great! After learning as much as I can about Jerry he had a country style approach in his playing. Way much more than just blues
You are an amazing teacher...any style...This is a great lesson. Thank You!!
Yes, Marty!! Well done, and as always, love the dead influenced jams you share. Jerry and Dawg threw down some of my most. Favorite tunes. This is awesome!!! 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
Heck yeah, great walk through. Thanks for sharing.
Great lesson ! Broken down nicely.
Thank you so much. I have always wanted to learn to play the song. Much appreciated.
Love it. Would love to hear you break down walkin’ boss. Another good one.
Brilliant! Thanks Marty! Your legendary version of this song with Tony Brucco has unfortunately been removed from the net. It was always a joy to watch.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS ONE MARTY!!!!!!!
Amazing like always keep up the good work marty im 13 and i started playing when i was r when was about 9 i found you and you really helped me along, thanks ,cj

Thanks a lot. My fav of this is garcia grisman and tony rice, someone uploaded tony teaching this .._ but marty you really do a great job
so great you take the time to pass on what you love I hope I get good enough to pay it forward
Nice job on an old folksong. Nice pace for teaching. I do like to add the F chord on the 2nd half, more like Doc Watson. Lots of diffferent ways to play this one. A great tune for jamming. :)
Marty! You are a GD master, just straight up. I’m going to learn this thing if it kills me.
Thanks Marty. You made this so playable. I would welcome more bluegrass tunes!
Marty can you sing the chords like that all the time?? You have no idea how much that really helps👍👍👍👍👍
Happy Ever After by the foo fighters lesson!!!!! great acoustic song off their new album.
Blessed art thou MARTY SCHWARTZ!
Great lesson Marty! Thank you so much!
Yeah buddy! Great tune choice.
Hey man, found this cool rock song with a pretty awesome intro and thought you might like it. It’s called “crosses” by asg. No need to make a tutorial, just thought it sounded cool and wanted to share! Thanks for the videos dude, learning a ton!

@martymusic thanks for the lesson! it sounds really good and is relatively simple to learn :)
From India Marty! Great Job. Thanks for these lessons.
Marty, love what you do...spreading the joy of music!
Any chance you could do a lesson on Tony Joe White's Tunica Motel?
Really keen to learn it.
As ALWAYS Marty, You.......KICKED ASS!!!
Awesome! Jerry garcia and david grisman "off to sea once more" would be a fun one to learn marty! ;)
Thank you for this video. It is exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks Marty!
Or even a JGB "Might As Well" love that tune!
Neither of those are jerry band songs. Those are dead songs.
When you go to 2nd fret on the g string I think you should be playing an F chord. C Dm C F Dm probably an Am in there too!
That's how I hear it. And I think it sounds better than the two-chord version.
Great song and version.
Great song, thanks for this Marty.
great as always thanks
Please do more of these!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love when I find songs I’m trying to learn that you already have a video for.
How about Casey Jones, not the Grateful Dead, but the Jerry’s cover of Mississippi John hurt? The fingerpicking is tough for a no talent hack like me to figure out.
Your an inspirational guitarist!!...And one day i wish to play at least half as good as u can!👌🔥...
Marty! I see you dig BlueGRASS! Almost ROLLED right past this video, glad I didnt. Going to FIRE this lesson up right now! More SMOKIN' Jerry Garcia/David Grisman licks would be greatly appreciated! :)
Hey thanks Marty, giving us more music diversity every day!!! Keep it up
Hey Marty, another amazing video. Happy late thanksgiving and you have taught me all the songs I know. You are amazing and my aunt wants me to play her a song called angles flying to close to the ground, and I was wondering if you could do a video on it. I hope you read this.
My first love,grass is cool!
great job marty
Although I am into old time more than bluegrass the cover of this song Marty did several years ago with Tony B. is one of the best versions.
this is a traditional folk song existing long before there was anything called bluegrass.
Thanks for reminding me that I want a Taylor 600 series.. jerk! lol I always did love that inlay.
hey Marty you think you can do a brother cane (and fools shine on) how to play video there isnt any out there
