You make me Laugh! Where do you get your energy? No matter, it translates well to the camera. Good stuff man! After I got my new 2020 WRX I started to look around for shops to do the oil changes. Just the oil and filter change. I was shocked at what I found for full synth changes. They made the dealerships look affordable! I continued my search and found on Amazon the correct, factory oil filters and crush washers in a 3 pack for $28.65. A 5qt jug of full synth oil can be had (on sale) for as low as $28-$35 depending on the brand. And the best part of this is the FA20 engine itself. The oil filter is right there under the hood, on top of the engine! Making oil changes in the newer WRXs super simple. And then you just take the used oil back to the store you bought it from and recycle it at no charge. Yeah there are a couple extra steps, but I'd rather do this then have the monkies at the local service places not fully tighten down the drain plug and have the car leak out a good amount of oil on my garage floor. Nice videos you are doing. I hate those scheduled maintenance stuff because half of them could be done later if the part is still in good shape. Brakes can last much longer depending of your type of driving, filters sometimes are still in good shape, etc. When I was going at the dealer I always told them if it’s still works and still in good shape, don’t touch it even if that little book says to change it.
I just had to subscribe, this is such informative content. It would be really cool if you do a video with all/some of those maintenance. Love and really appreciate your content.
Appreciate the support my man! And I've got a ton of it up. Covered the vast majority but for the ones I have not yet got ill add when I get the opportunity to get them done 😁🔥
Love driving these, simple drivability mods make these just fantastic. I’ve driven a few with IAG short blocks… if you get the opportunity take full advantage.
Sweet! I have a 16 sti and I’ve been following along making some mods of my own. I really want to know what all you have in the fuel system because that’s what I’m looking at next since I’m just stage 2 right now.
I’ve been watching your videos for years and I love the content. I do all of my own work and recently bought a 2020 sti. I want to record all the work I do to the car regarding maintenance. Any tips on how to document all services? Thank you.
This is good information, for me I don’t think it would work out that cheap though, I would have to buy decent tools and spend my time, which is why I dealer service my current cars. However this is really good information and I’m considering buying and STI.
Basic hand tools will get you 90% of the way with maintenance on these cars and they're not too bad to service, nothing wrong with utilizing the dealer though 😁
i just pulled and vacuumed my cabin air filter, i'm going to pikes peak cog railway next week (they just reopened after a $100.000.000 renovation). denver air was the world's worst - saturday, and that filter is all the lung protection you have unless you also wear an n95 mask. rock auto.com has cabin filters for min. $5 each + shpg. the oem filter is thin like a few tissue papers. i dug out some dirt and laid cinder blocks for the front wheels to roll onto to, and save cardboard to throw down where i'm laying and do my oil chg's. i plan to buy fumoto valves and hose kit for each car.
After watching the mini series on oil I was interested to see if changing your own oil on a car was even a viable option on a car with factory warranty. So I called my local Subaru dealership and asked. According to them you cannot retain a CPO or Powertrain warranty without having some kind of proof the labor one done by a professional. I’m more than qualified to change my own oil I worked as a technician for 2 years. But without any kind of proof that I am indeed a professional your warranty is still void. Even with receipts for the oil you purchased. So they pigeon hole us as consumers to either go back to the dealer or to a local shop. But if you have an STI I don’t recommend you have Firestone service your car. Also a brake job on a 18+ STI at the dealer for front pads and rotors is like $1,500+
They really upped the price on the 18+ brakes. Also thank you for verifying the oil changing information. Ridiculous that they require a professional change your oil. I am curious on what their definition of a professional is, like if someone needs a certification or just to work for a local shop.
Who knows. I still have my ASE certs which is more than can be said about a lot of local mechanics. But I still don’t feel like pushing that envelope. I think the best bet as a regular customer would be to do drivetrain related items at the dealer and save money on everything else one can manage on their own. Either than or make friends with an advisor and bring them coffees or something haha. Nonetheless another super informative video man great job. And on the 18+ brakes it’s cause their “race brakes” which is applicable but I’m still not about to spend around 2 grand on a cake break job that probably only grants 1.5hours of book labor time. Big pass on that one
Dealer does most of the maintenance on my WRX but that's also because I can't do any of it except oil change and air filters. They also do inspections every PM and tell me if anything is wrong. I'm not mechanically inclined at all so I can't really tell if anything is wrong.
my 03 blob is actually way more cheap to maintain when i do everything myself, cheaper than my 94 celica surprisingly enough and parts are easier to come by!
Here in Canada we can't afford to go to the dealership , at least not where I am , Subaru oil $17 liter , Subaru grill emblem $90 , Subaru wheel center $80 , turbo pill $80 ! But ........I can buy a rhd , JDM complete car for $1000-5000 if you're not fussy , and $5-8000 for a good one ! Good info , depends on you're skill level but if you buy a used STI you'll get lot's of practice !
Very true, the beat way to learn is to get the info and try things for yourself. It's important to know that it can always be fixed. I think one aspect is the fixation that if it breaks it's the end of the world. But still jealous of the JDM Gems you can snag 😅
The crazy part? This is pretty much how you maintain any car on the planet. I was thinking I'd be spending even less than this, because I don't use 'Subaru' oil in the five years I've been running EJs, and I get my filters and crush washers in bulk...but I kinda had a brain fart and realized I'm not crazy and my oil change interval isn't 6k. I may go through front pads in 36k, but not rotors and rear pads. I am, however, scared to death of any Subaru timing belt. So yeah, I'm probably pretty close to your DIY number. Good numbers, good message. Most of the shit ain't hard, even spark plugs with the right tools. And hey, using a turkey baster on the master cylinder reservoir is a lot better than nothing if you don't have a partner or fancy tools. Even if you take it in for a couple things you don't wanna mess with, you're still saving thousands. Especially that cabin air filter shit...
That filter is stupid expensive through Subaru dont understand why they charge so much for just dropping the glove box. The skills learned from doing all of this and the money saved are both pluses in my eyes. Appreciate the feedback, information and support! 🔥
130k miles is like what... 8 years of free spirit driving? which converts $9,000/$3,000 on dealer/DIY into $1,100/$400 per year :) so if you choose to go DIY then you can spend $700 on mods a year. sounds like every single christmas/new year holiday will be loaded with happiness :D
@@Smeedia Yeah it's crazy. I'm talking about the BRZ though. 0W-20 6ltr for $106. I just buy their oil filters which are $18 each and I use Castrol Edge 5w-30.
Are the drive belts included in the subaru 30k mile service? When I got a quote from subaru they quoted me $700 for brake and clutch fluid flush and an oil change lol. Planned to do it myself but, if the drive belts are included in the service I think I'd rather let them do it.
Me personally I would prefer to take my sti to the dealer just for the timing belt..... just so I have someone to blame if the engine blows from it lol.... but everything else I do myself
Thanks for the videos, I am trying to do a clutch fluid change on my 2016 sti but can’t find any good videos in you tube...do you have any suggestions? 🙏

What's the average life.. is it really a 100,000k mile car. I'm getting a wrx or a wrangler. It's way to hard to decide...I love off roading in my truck and a jeep is a lifestyle I love but the wrx is my childhood dream.
Smeedia well everything!! Engine oil, filter, transmission gear fluids, plugs..I have read that OEM for certain things are recommended so just wanted to have an idea of what as I get started with DIY
Hey bro, I have a 2015 STi that has 220,000kms, I’ve been using 5w30 and 5w40 but am wondering if I should go to a thicker oil being high mileage? Maybe a 10w30? I don’t want to do it unless I know it’s safe to do.
@@Smeedia I live in West Australia so it’s pretty hot here summer is average 30-40 degrees Celsius And I drive it nicely until fully warmed up, I don’t put WOT on low revs, I ease into boost before sending it but I do send it a bit most drives, just not the whole drive, and certainly not in the first ten minutes of driving.
Where can I get the oem brembo brakes pads and rotors under 400 for everything? The brakes pads alone are over 500 for a set of front brakes at my dealer
Thanks for the info! I'm in the market for a 2020 STi, mostly cause the EJ intrigues me more than any GDI engine will. Any thoughts on currently engine reliability etc? The thought of a spun bearing or a ringland blowing drives me nuts
Appreciatw the support! You really wont have issues unless you beat the hell out of the car and neglect it. Engine problems are unavoidable in any car but an AOS will migrate the risk quite a bit. The EJ is a great engine it's just important to remember that it needs a little extra maintenance. Just stay on top of regular maintenance and you'll be fine 😁
People really don't understand that these cars are really not that hard to maintain, or crazy expensive to maintain compared to the other cars in their segment. Thank God every bolt on these cars is metric! The upper echelon European sports cars are FAR more expensive to maintain.

Love driving these, simple drivability mods make these just fantastic. I’ve driven a few with IAG short blocks… if you get the opportunity take full advantage.
Hey man love the vids! Could you do a video or put in a list in the description of your mods?
Yes! I have that on the list to shoot so it is coming up 😁
Sweet! I have a 16 sti and I’ve been following along making some mods of my own. I really want to know what all you have in the fuel system because that’s what I’m looking at next since I’m just stage 2 right now.
@@Outlier117 fuel system eight now I've got the DW300C fuel pump, Cobb FPR and Cobb 1050x injectors 👀
Thanks bro! Just what I was looking for!
I’ve been watching your videos for years and I love the content. I do all of my own work and recently bought a 2020 sti. I want to record all the work I do to the car regarding maintenance. Any tips on how to document all services? Thank you.
Great content here! This is very useful info!
Thank you! Good to know the cost breakdowns!
FUCKING lover ur videos. first time WRX owner and im learning so much from you!!! keep these rolling
Appreciate the support my dude 🙌 glad they're helping!
So envious of your garage! just a gravel drive way and nowhere close to stow my ramps, pans etc.
I feel it, use to have a similar set up before I was able to finally snag a garage 🔥🙏
Thanks for this video, you mentioned drive belts at 30k, 60k, 90k, etc.
Which drive belts specifically do you change at these intervals?
Just the accessory belt and the AC belt 🙏
i just pulled and vacuumed my cabin air filter, i'm going to pikes peak cog railway next week (they just reopened after a $100.000.000 renovation). denver air was the world's worst - saturday, and that filter is all the lung protection you have unless you also wear an n95 mask. rock auto.com has cabin filters for min.
My 30k mile service and my 60k mile service was 500.00 and some change each @Franks Irvine Subaru for my Ocean Blue WRX. Oh yeahhh.
Ain't nothing wrong with that 💪
That $6k is like another car for projects or another daily beater
For real, you can get a decent daily for 6K
@@Smeedia yup. 6k is 7 gen honda accord coupe v6 6mt with under 100k miles on it (which is nothing for honda)
Perks of having a family of mechanics, 25 years in the making 🤪💸
Pays off!!!
thought i was already subbed! oops haha keep it up man!
Thank you and appreciate the support!
Good video
Hey great videos. New to the channel what wheels you have. They look awsome
Thanks
Welcome and thank you! They are Work Emotion D9Rs 18X9.5 +38 😁
Love the edits what do you use to edit?
Thank you! Adobe premier Pro 🔥
my 03 blob is actually way more cheap to maintain when i do everything myself, cheaper than my 94 celica surprisingly enough and parts are easier to come by!
Oh not bad at all! And doing everything at home saves HEAPS of money 🔥😁
@@Smeedia even the coveted headgasket costs 50-70 euros to swap in finland if you just buy the part and do it :D
@@Smeedia Agree , it's always fun regardless !
Glad to know this guy can read a white board
thank god i can do my own work.
For real! The savings are real when doing it yourself
Is it true that if you have a modified STI that you should change the oil every 3000 miles instead?
great job!
Thank you! 😁
Valvoline synthetic 5w-40 for a sti?
Heavier weight oil than recommended but nothing wrong with that
Also you forgot about the tire rotation at 15k miles they charge like 20 bucks lol
It was an optional service in the manual so I left it out, for some of the service packages I saw they included it for free also 😅
I get it for free at my dealership
Very helpful
I need to know where you got those rain guards! I just got a 2020 STI and I can’t find any good ones anywhere
These are the ones I have they are the OEM Set!
amzn.to/2GgVEA4
I agree with smeedia. I also have the OEM and have now problems.
Smeedia you da best
dealer recommended I change my front and rear dif fluid every 30k on my 2020 sti what are your thoughts?
130k miles is like what... 8 years of free spirit driving? which converts $9,000/$3,000 on dealer/DIY into $1,100/$400 per year :) so if you choose to go DIY then you can spend $700 on mods a year. sounds like every single christmas/new year holiday will be loaded with happiness :D
Oil change at Subaru where I live is $118
Damn 😫 they're making some good profit over there
The OEM oil alone is sold for $106 at my Subaru dealership here in Australia, plus labour this is very expensive.
More expensive than I would have thought down there 😫
@@Smeedia Yeah it's crazy.
My local dealership also quoted me $4k to swap my brake pads and rotors lmao
Great list bro, Can you link the rotors? Which I just paid a kidney for at 42k miles.
Yes about to hop on the computer and add the link to the description 😁
Rotors have been linked!
Me personally I would prefer to take my sti to the dealer just for the timing belt..... just so I have someone to blame if the engine blows from it lol.... but everything else I do myself
Lol I actually don't blame you there 😅
Thanks for the videos, I am trying to do a clutch fluid change on my 2016 sti but can’t find any good videos in you tube...do you have any suggestions? 🙏
You can syphon out the fluid or bleed it from the bleeder valve, I did this on the litch stip brace video 😁
Jesse Valle ...Mr. Subaru is very good for DIY, Subaru owners.
Okay thanks!
I’m afraid to see what mine is on the ST....almost to 80k and all I’ve done is oil changes and 1 cabin filter change lol ope..
I would assume that it's somewhat similar to these 🤔
I think fords “maintenance bundle” deal (oil change, trans fluid flush/fill, spark plug and air filter change ) is like $600 which i suppose isn’t to horrible.
@@jessebudelman not too bad but always room to save some $$$ 😉
Hell yeah, I need to start up a channel....stock piling money for parts atm for spring/summer time. Haha love the content and JDM parts are the best.
You’re like a chill version of Shia LaBeouf that has a pretty damn good channel lol
Eyyyyyy, appreciate the support Justin. 🙌😅🔥

Does the cabin filter need a tube?
quick question, the drive belts link you posted. Do those belts work for 2016 sti as well?
They should 🙏
Dude how many times you should replace rotors & pads? Don’t they last at least 5 yrs.?i do it myself minor maintenance does Suburu uses specific motor Oil every 2500miles
Pads and rotors depends on how hard you drive, I typically do mine every 30K
5k gang but mostly so when it inevitably blows up I have an excuse to buy a built bottom end lol.

love the video & channel! do u have a spreadsheet of all this that u could post a link to? thx
Thank you and somewhere I do, I'll dig around to see if I still have it 🙏😁
@@Smeedia sweet thanks, as a fellow nerd I could definitely picture the excel sheet with all the math on it just off screen 😂
I know this is off topic to this video but do you happen to have a favorite or preference on turbo blankets as far as brands go?
PTP is what I normally run 😁
Smeedia thx brochacho!
I'm looking in my owner's manual and it says inspect the drive belt at 30,000 miles not replace them is it your recommendation to replace them every 30,000? I'm nearing up on the 30,000 Mark and I want to make sure I do everything right!!
Hey look its me. Different car same question! Haha
Hey man wjats the average lifespan of a wrx? U seem to have been through a good many of them(because they are baddass). The internet is very disappointing saying around 100-180kmiles
Depends on how well they're maintained, my first one had over 400K on the clock stock engine and trans. 🙏
What's the average life.. is it really a 100,000k mile car. I'm getting a wrx or a wrangler. It's way to hard to decide...I love off roading in my truck and a jeep is a lifestyle I love but the wrx is my childhood dream.
I've seen stock block STIs with over 400,000 miles on them. It really comes down to how hard you drive the car and staying ontop of maintance 🙏
Nice job, but what about clutch?
Dealer charges around $1100 labor + parts 🙃
Do you recommend using OEM for all these maintenance stuff or some aftermarket?
Depends on what your swapping out, i typically always use after market
Smeedia well everything!! Engine oil, filter, transmission gear fluids, plugs..I have read that OEM for certain things are recommended so just wanted to have an idea of what as I get started with DIY
Plugs: NGK
Gear oil: Motul
Engine Oil: Motul
Oil Filter: Prova
Thats what i typically go with 🙏
Smeedia such a great help. Thank you much
Hey bro, I have a 2015 STi that has 220,000kms, I’ve been using 5w30 and 5w40 but am wondering if I should go to a thicker oil being high mileage? Maybe a 10w30? I don’t want to do it unless I know it’s safe to do.
Do you live in a hot or cold climate snd what type of driving arr you doing
@@Smeedia I live in West Australia so it’s pretty hot here summer is average 30-40 degrees Celsius
And I drive it nicely until fully warmed up, I don’t put WOT on low revs, I ease into boost before sending it but I do send it a bit most drives, just not the whole drive, and certainly not in the first ten minutes of driving.
Where can I get the oem brembo brakes pads and rotors under 400 for everything? The brakes pads alone are over 500 for a set of front brakes at my dealer
You won't get oems that cheap, I'd suggest using stop tech
@@Smeedia fuck yeah man! In time to replace my rear brakes. 30k miles, I drive windy roads daily, this is a lifesaver man! Thanks!
The 15+ wrx and sti prefer full synthetic oil though right?
That is correct 👍
after years started to do my own maintanenceand repairs... now i can afford the gas to drive it
Do you guys ever run seafoam in your turbo Subies?
Personally no, I'm not a huge fan sea foam. I've seen some people do it with mixed results
@@Smeedia Thanks for the insight! Here's to hoping the changed internals on the RA which carried over to the 2019+ address some of those issues!
Sti has a timing belt not chain? What about wrx?
Fa20 WRX uses a chain, all other STIs and WRXs uses belts
People really don't understand that these cars are really not that hard to maintain, or crazy expensive to maintain compared to the other cars in their segment. Thank God every bolt on these cars is metric!
The upper echelon European sports cars are FAR more expensive to maintain.
For real!!!! They're super easy to work on as well once you get a little familiar with them
Where can I get oem pads and rotors for $300?
I'll snag the link for you when I get home!
I need them too. Great content!

What type of diff an trans fluid do you use ? The OEM subaru gear oil or ?

The only mods I put on the WRX are OEM foglights, a Vortex Generator, and a STI shift knob because I saw the 2021 wrx with one in the show room @the dealer ship with one.
