    Nice to see some video's on the classic wheel guns. I really do appreciate you bringing out a pair of Troopers. I have some S&W's and recently started venturing out into Colt offerings. One gun I picked up recently was a 1977 Colt Police Positive Special in .38 spl with 4" barrel. I think it's going to be a really fun range gun, not too big and not too small. There's also a beautiful condition 1982 Trooper mk V I'm saving up for. It has the vent rib of the Python in 6". Really enjoy the videos.

      The Model 3-5-7 was created a year or so before the Python and has the same mechanism, just not as pretty. It was in between the Python and the Trooper and dropped some time after 1960.

    I’ve definitely come to appreciate revolvers especially older revolvers . Only problem is that they are expensive now lol I bought a 4” blue colt diamondback last week and I’m not to proud of what I paid for it. The new colt revolvers are definitely more appealing to me than the new s&w revolvers.

    As to why semi auto like the 1911 didnt really catch on like th3 357 mag. Ive heard the 357 mag was made for penetrating car doors and barriers the 38 special couldn't. Perhaps it was thought that 45 acp doesn't penetrate barriers as well

    With modern machining and materials Colt and Smiths goal should be to make better guns then they used to. In a way Smith has, their new gun prob wont crack and the barrels are put on the frame in a much better way but the fit and finish is lacking and the key lock is the deal breaker for me, Even with the MIM trigger and hammer, why not sell forged hammer and trigger upgrades for those who want them?

  • @tamer1773
    @tamer1773 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    One reason police departments didn't adopt the 1911 was because of the DA/SA trigger. They felt that it was too easy to fire an unintentional second shot after the first one. They also often selected the weapon to fit the lowest common denominator and chose .38 special because everyone could handle the recoil. My department allowed us to carry an S&W, Colt or Dan Wesson revolver as long as it had a four inch barrel and six shot capacity. They later added Ruger a few years after the Security Six came out. Police departments are often slow to change because of the cost and the "if it isn't broke don't fix it" standard. Even speed loaders were around for years before some departments allowed their use. My department didn't transition to semi-autos until the early nineties and when they did they chose the Sig Sauer DAO 226 and 228.

    • @leadfarmer556

      Tamer 1 1911 are not da/sa. They are single action.

    • @tamer1773
      @tamer1773 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@leadfarmer556 That was an error on my part. The 1911 generally has a fairly light, relatively short stroke trigger, and it's easy to fire a unintentional second round after firing the first. I've seen that with other pistols as well such as the Ruger LCP ll with the bladed trigger. When a shooter doesn't have a good grip on it which is common with very small pistols a second, unintentional shot is easy to let go. I even did it when I was familiarizing myself with it due to my being used to the longer trigger pull of the original LCP and the several revolvers I own. What police departments also didn't like was the single action that necessitated carrying the 1911 in condition 1. Police departments don't like manual safeties on their weapons and they don't like the "European" method of carrying with an empty chamber that required the user to rack the slide before firing. When we transitioned to semi-autos we went to the Sig Sauer 226 and 228 with a DAO trigger that required no safety and no decocking lever.

      The Model 1911 is not a DA/SA autloloader. It is an SA autoloader. Your contention is uninformed. Quite a few departments adopted the Browning Hi-Power and it was very popular with foreign military and police agencies. The Model 1911 was not. It is also an SA autoloader. Yes, the recoil of the .45 has something to do with the decisions.

    The Colt .45 (1911) didn't go over because: (1) People didn't trust it to be drop-safe. (2) Many guns would jam periodically. (3) People did not trust themselves to carry cocked-and-locked.

    Can't go wrong either way on the classic models. I just got an original no dash S&W 686 last year and for a 35 year old gun, you'd never guess it or find it outdated in any way. I don't know if Smith and Wesson makes a model to compare to the Colt Phython. It's not fair to Smith and Wesson to compare them. Colt makes other models to compare these two brands. King Cobra, Trooper, to name a few. In my opinion the Phython is on it's own level. In it's own class. Colt has had far more success than Smith & Wesson with the Colt 1911, Colt M16, Colt SA peace maker, etc.. Colt was the first to patent the idea of a revolver. I choose a Colt King Cobra 4" stainless in 1988 for my duty weapon.

Hard to hit well when the adrenaline is pumping and the gun is bucking.

    I have a S&W 586 4" no dash, pre-hillary hole. It's in very good condition.
    I have been strongly encouraging people to buy vintage revolvers both Colt and S&W if they dislike the modern products. They're harder to find and prices are increasing. It's either that or a lawyer designed revolver that isn't true to the manufacturers heritage.
    I had my 'smith install a target hammer/trigger. The cylinder chambers were out of sync with the barrel so he corrected that issue.
    He also discovered the trigger rebound coil spring had a few loops removed. You never, ever modify a spring to reduce the load. Replace the spring.
    To address the issue that police have with pistol's high capacity magazine is the attitude that with 19 rounds they don't need to practice as much or just days before qualification.
    This leads to accuracy issues in police involved shooting. The average accuracy is 30% or less. Those numbers get worse the further the distance they are from the criminal.

    I have a very specific question: I'm looking at a Colt Detectiv Special. In the description it States that the DA Trigger works fine, but the SA is "out of time", because after Going to full cock, the cylinder will lock AFTER pulling the trigger.
    Is that normal? I'm asking, because I have heard that some Colt revolvers lock their cylinder after the hammer is cocked (so the cylinder "wiggles" at full cock).
    Thank you for your help.

    About a year ago I purchased a new Smith and Wesson 686 6 inch barrel and 617 6 inch barrel. Took them to the range couple of times. Yeah they shoot ok but the finish and workmanship just isnt there. Cheap plastic/rubber grips. I mean c'mon Smith how many more corners can you cut before you have cheapened your guns to the point of no return ??? After that I started to look for older Smiths with no lock, no mim, and no frame mounted firing pin. Since then I have found some gorgeous older models ....a 586-3, 686-3, 617 no dash, 14-4, 17-3, and a 629-2. All of them are like new and they just scream quality and craftsmanship. Sold the new Smiths and I currently have the Rugers up for sale. Not looking back either.

Got a Smith 586 classic coming my way we'll see. I love my Colt Series 70 repro but the finish is weak in a humid invironment. My 20 yr old Springfield Armory 1911 has a durable finish. It's great. Say what you want about plastic guns but put them in the safe a don't worry about rust or lube. Pull them out and put a couple hundred rounds through and throw them back in the safe.

    I love and collect Colt and S&W revolvers. The Trooper MKIII (1969-1980) is not a "classic Colt". The earlier "Trooper .357", the Officer's Model and Officer's Model Match revolvers WERE classic Colt's and are essentially the same as the Python, without the sexed up barrel. Unfortunately, the action of the MKIII series and later Mark V series was, itself, a downgrade from the classic Colt revolver action. Think of "post-64 Winchester Model 70". They used a coil mainspring and transfer bar internal safety. YES, it is a great gun. It is a durable, sturdy revolver. I began a career as a police officer in 1973. I used a Colt Trooper MKIII as my duty gun from 1973-1988. The Department had approved the use of 9mm handguns in 1986 (after training and qualification) and I made the switch in 1988, choosing a Beretta 92FS. New officers had a choice to use revolvers until 1991 when the department required all new officers to use 9mm handguns.
    I used, and still own, a Model 19 with 2.5" barrel, which was one of my off duty guns. Along with J frame and N frame S&Ws, a Colt Officer's Model Match .38 (the most accurate handgun I have ever fired), a Colt Trooper .357 and a Colt Official Police. Among others. For those desiring a Python, but find them out of their price range...Consider a Trooper .357 (NOT MKIII) or a Colt Officer's Model Match. They are every bit as enjoyable to shoot and are usually available for about 1/4-1/3 the price of a Python...or about the same price as a newly made revolver. Also, the S&W Model 19 and the Model 27 are incredibly great revolvers. You aren't missing anything if you choose one of those either.

    • @garyK.45ACP
      @garyK.45ACP 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MrGibsonguy335 I didn't mean to slight these great revolvers.
      Well...there are two different models. The "Police Positive" which is actually chambered for .32 S&W, which Colt called the ".32 New Police", .38 S&W, which Colt called the ".38 New Police" (because they were NOT going to put "S&W" on a Colt revolver!) and .22 LR. Barrel lengths were 2" to 7-1/2". Target versions with adjustable sights were made also.
      The other is the "Police Positive Special" which IS chambered in .38 Special. These have a slightly loner cylinder and larger frame "window"
      These are what Colt called the "D" frame or previously the ".32 frame". They are slightly larger than the S&W J frame. Some of the names given these revolvers were "Bankers Special", "Agent", "Cobra", "Viper".
      The famous "Detective Special" (often called a "Dick Special" by police) is nothing more than a 2" barreled Colt Police Positive Special. The "Diamondback" is a PPS with a sexed up, Python-ish, barrel.
      They were given the overhaul the I/E frames received in 1972. The later models, (post-'72) just like the MKIII, MKV revolvers are actually sturdier and BETTER as a duty revolver, but not so finely made.
      They are great revolvers. I own a Detective Special which I used as an off duty gun, along with a S&W Centennial (J frame) for many many years. They are just slightly larger than the J frame, but hold 6 rounds of .38 Special.
      As a duty revolver, not too many officers in the 1970s-80s carried one (except plainclothes officers carrying "Dick Specials" ). I recall one Sergeant in our district when I began that carried a 4" PPS. The guns were considered a bit small and light for uniform duty...probably without valid reason.
      In theory, a 4" barreled, 6 shot .38 Special is the same as any other 4" barreled, 6 shot, .38 Special revolver. Why would it be worse than a Colt Official Police or a S&W Model 10? (both of which were very popular duty weapons until the 1980s) I can't answer that one. They were lighter and smaller, to be sure.
      They are great revolvers, if you have one, enjoy it! If you can get one for a good price...jump on it!
      FWIW, I just added another Classic Colt Officers Model Match in .22 LR to my collection last week.
      I can't lay off 'em!

      @@MrGibsonguy335 That's a great price. Another thing is that these revolvers are available, usually, for LESS than new revolvers and are much better made. Yes, the PPS is a finely made, classic revolver. I would rather have a PPS for $465 than a newer made revolver for the same or higher cost.
      *Keep in mind, they are not rated for +P ammunition. There was no such thing at the time.*
      +P ammo won't cause your gun to explode like a grenade, but it will greatly accelerate the wear of the gun. Stick to standard .38 Special loads.
      I use, almost exclusively, light wadcutter and semi-wadcutter cast lead bullet handloads for shooting my .38 Special and .357 Magnum revolvers. No need to beat yourself and the gun, just to shoot some targets.

      Dont let your family get thier hands on your firearms. They are a piece of history and should go to someone who will care for those history pieces until it's time to pass them on to a prearranged person. You just have to put it in your will. Best wishes. M.H.
