      absolutely I have been very very blessed to inherets both smiths and Colts, I inherted a pre model 10 Smith used by the Philly Police dept by my moms sister back in the day she was the very very few female motorcycle officers this was back in the late 40's early 1950's I also got a hold off 2 Colt Troopers in 357 1 in 6" Barrel and 1 in 4" and 3 Official polices and whole bunch others hell my first gun i ever bought on my own was a Smith Model 10 -7 in a 6" barrel. when i was in the Navy in the early 80's i used both Smith revolvers and Rugers in the 90s we where still using the 1911 it wasnt till the early 200o's we got the Beretta M-9s (92FS) I still use a Revolver for IDPA shoots i am one of 2 still using 1 my teammates think i am too old fashioned. one thing we have the advantage over auto loaders if we shot long distance we have a stack ing point to rest then fire through once the auto guys start to shoot they are committed

      I'm a younger cat, I'll be 38 this year, and I absolutely love revolvers. I grew up shooting and not liking them because they were still the big thing back in the 80's, but now that autos have taken over the shooting world I have fallen in love. A few years ago I started buying away and I know own 8 revolvers and plan on buying many more. I have 5 old S&W's and they are great. All I carry one of my Mod. 36's every day. I love them more and more every day.

    Your videos always teach me something I didn't know before, that's one reason I've seen all of them, so far. This video taught me that the hammer spring adjustment effects the rearward travel, not just the amount of force, of the hammer when shooting in the double-action mode. Thanks for the info, and great display of what these sweet revolvers are capable of.

    @theKGB65 , Actually, I'm a bad teacher on that one, I guess. I don't think loosening the screw on the hammer spring changes the rearward travel at all; it does just lighten the pressure on it, causing a lighter strike. Regardless of the tension level on the hammer spring, though, it's going to start it's fall from less distance in double action. Guess it would be like preventing a batter from getting the bat back as far as he wants / needs to start his swing at that little baseball. :-)

    I like both Colt AND S&W depending on the particular model. I've owned a 6" Colt Python, a 4" S&W 19, a 6 1/2" S&W 29, and a 6" S&W 25-5. Of them all the Python had the best action, and was the most accurate hands down.

    I own a 1965 4"Python, '69 Cobra, and a 70' Detective. I'm a Colt afficianado. I also own a sweet '57 S&W M&P Model 10. They are all great revolvers. The Python has the smoothest action of any gun I have ever fired and I've been shooting for 50 years. The Cobra was the original light weight snubbie and is an absolute joy to shoot though it's snappy. Eagle grips tamed that. What I like most about small frame Colts is that their frame is slightly larger than a Smith J frame making the grip and trigger pull much better for a guy with big hands like me. My semi-auto of choice is the CZ-P01 9mm. My home defense shotgun is a Mossberg 500 pump. All of the above guns are ergonomically comfortable, reliable, and accurate. Pulling back on a Colt's cylinder release is automatic for me. I wish I could clang targets with the reliability that you do. You're a damn good shot in my estimation!

    For my first ever revolver, I bought my 4” barrel Colt Trooper Mk III-the working man’s Python-(1979 mfg) at a local pawn shop back in October 2021. Whether I’m shooting .38, .38+P, or .357 through it, it’s such a pleasure to shoot and it’s just buttery smooth regardless if you’re shooting single action or double action. I’m in love with revolvers now, so much so that I’ve got a Colt King Cobra on layaway that I’m about to own in another week!

      The market study says that the price will be WAY to high if they use the same manufacturing standards as they did before, and they don't want to tarnish the Python name with a more cheaply built revolver.

      More likely a problem with the ammunition. I estimate that I have put between 8,000 and 9,000 rounds through my Python, and never had a failure to fire. Maybe it is for good reason that I have had multiple gunsmiths decline to work on the Python's action and advised only to have Colt do any action work - too easy to mess up the action.

    The pictured S&W M19 takes me back ...it was the first revolver I was issued in the Border Patrol, and I carried it with a Tyler T Grip. It was a sweet shooting gun with the 110 gr Treasury .38 issue rounds that were issued then. Much of our qualification was shot with wad cutters after using up the ammo in the gun and loops and speed loaders. At a point right before we were allowed to carry automatics (at first we had to provide our own and there were quite a few different models allowed, which was, I imagine, difficult for the Patrol to keep up with all the different ammo types issue wise) they went to hot .357 125 gr. SJHP ammo that proceeded to eventually split the forcing cones of the sweet little 19s. I still miss that little 19...

  • @judsongaiden9878
    @judsongaiden9878 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    I've always found the Colt cylinder release to be counterintuitive. If price isn't a factor, I'd say Smith & Wesson makes the best revolvers. If price is an issue, then I'd say Ruger. That's if we're comparing double-actions. Ruger definitely makes the best single-actions. Anyway, revolvers have sort of an organic curviness to them compared to squarish auto pistols.

    Even with the introduction of the 1911 there still remained elitists who maintained that a revolver with moon clips could be reloaded just as fast and could keep up with a 1911. The funny part is they were entirely right. The advantage of the 1911 was just that extra round in the single stack magazine.
    I shoot both but always find it funny what a small difference JMB actually made with something so revolutionary.

    I clearly prefer the Colts for one reason - the cylinder release latch. The latch on the S&Ws (if it's firing heavy loads that cause it to jump around more) will chew up the knuckle of my right thumb. The round backed Colt latch is perfect with the heaviest loads. The new style S&W latch is better than the old incarnation but still inferior to the colt. Also the Colt is a pull arrangement which is a natural when the index finger pushes the cylinder out for case ejection. Love it.

    I choose Smith and Wesson for double action and Colt for single action. Jim Martin told me once that when comparing the innards of a Colt double action to a Smith and Wesson's, it's clear that the Smith and Wesson has the better design. I'm no gunsmith, but I trust Jim Martin's judgment. Nothing wrong with wanting to collect the Colt double actions though. They are classics.

    As a revolver owner, I will always prefer them to automatics. They are beautiful and classic pieces of American history and are absolutely amazing weapons. Some may disagree, and that's ok. I just know I would much rather have a simple, down-to-basics revolver rather than a big fancy rapid fire auto pistol.

    My first center fire handgun was a 4 inch 357 magnum revolver, a stainless Ruger GP100. At the time, I knew very little about what to buy. The gun store clerk explained how versatile the gun was, why it made sense for a beginner, that it was easy to maintain, and that it was excellent for my intended purpose (home defense). He set me up with a few boxes each of 38 special and 357 magnum, a cleaning kit, targets, etc. I’m grateful that he helped me make such a smart choice, one that looks even better now looking back with knowledge gained over a few decades. I have other weapons for home defense these days, but I still love to go out and shoot my trusty old revolver. As Hickok says, if you don’t have a revolver, what’s wrong with you?😆

      actually you can!!! visit some of the gun clubs we have in denmark and start learning how to shoot. the only, popular, handgun calibers we can't shoot in denmark is .44 magnum, .50 s&w and 10mm. everything he shoots here a lot of clubs have.

    • @j.h.17
      @j.h.17 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ellison Rodgers we are able to have guns in Denmark. Just not for self defense. But if you go to one of the many gun clubs we have in Denmark you can try shooting there. And if you become a member and visit regularly, you will eventually be able to buy your own gun. But, it takes time. And as I wrote to Lars Kuno Andersen, the only handgun cartridges that aren't allowed are 10mm, .44 magnum and 50 s&w

    I'm surprised that the Blazer ammo cleared so easily. In my GP100 it took 20 minutes before the cases had cooled enough to eject them. I think I remember hearing that Rugers have a tighter range of tolerance though, about casing expansion anyway.

      it all depend on who you ask Smiths cost alot less then the Colts back then , but the Colts where known to have a very nice trigger pull on them but a Colt was all basically hand made the parts where hand fitted with a gunsmiths file and calipers. you had to be very wealthy to buy a Colt back then its like the same old adage of the FORD vs Chevy guys same basic thing. there BOTH equally good as far as i am concerned they both have their pros and cons its as individaul as buying shoes. both are equally good one doesnt out live the other so think about it before you say something is better then the other do you own any Colt's? have you tested them both to come up with that hypothses ?

    • @highplainsdrifter9631
      @highplainsdrifter9631 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Aul I agree with the OP, I think that the Smiths are better guns overall. Colts are great, but looks at it this way; the Smith has a more rugged action, an inherently smoother double action trigger pull, and can be tuned up by a department armorer or basic gunsmith. Smith and Wesson dominated Colt in the police market during the latter half of the twentieth century, and part of that is because the Smith, due to it's more rugged construction, does indeed make a better duty sidearm. Colt also didn't invest near as much into the public sector as Smith, and they didn't listen to their customers nearly as well. Look at how long it took Colt to come out with a 44 Magnum. By the time they finally rolled out the Anaconda, the Smith Model 29 had been on the market for almost 4 decades. Smith was instrumental in creating the .357, .41, and .44 Magnums. Colt did no such development during this time. The Smith is easier to customize, and the fact that you can send it in to the company today and have it repaired or upgraded speaks for itself. The Snake Guns are cool, and they'll always hold their value. But today they are extremely overpriced, no double action revolver is worth $6,000. I'm sorry but that is ludicrous. There are a number of reasons why you saw 1 Colt in the holster of a cop back in the '60s and '70s for every 10 Smiths that were being carried. JMHO

    Love the 19, I used to have one, traded it for a 66 because I wanted a stainless revolver. I've also heard that Colts have a left hand twist to the rifling and S&Ws have a right hand one. I've heard all sorts of reasons for it, from they started making them that way when Colt made guns in England, to with a left hand twist the gun would twist into your hand with recoil. Probably no one knows for sure.

    I fell into fascination with the autos, just like everyone else. Then I went out and bought an S&W M&P R8: 8 shots of 357 mag in a beautifully crafted revolver.
    For those of us who want to stuff a self-defense pistol in a drawer--and sometimes don't get out to shoot it for extended periods--it induces greater confidence grabbing in the middle of the night vs an auto that could have been lying loaded for 6 months...with a weak mag spring.

    First gun I ever fired was a snub nosed .38 special revolver that my dad had a long time ago. As I got older I kinda fell for automatics but a few years back my dad picked up a 4 inch Smith & Wesson .357 magnum with a stainless steel finish. He let me shoot it after he got it and I thought it was ok. I shot it again a few weeks ago and I couldn't put it down, I had to have one. A friend of mine called me on Wednesday and said he had a few guns I might be interested in. I showed up at his house
