    Guys I was off by 10 years. This is a 2000 model not the 1990 as incorrectly stated. Thanks for catching that David Bliss!

      What "make" are the wooden grips on the stock?? I like them, wish I could get a set for a Ruger Security Six 1983 model. You know, for a time, I did not like 5 or 7 shot cylinders, to me for a long time a hand gun was supposed to be a Sis-Shooter for some reason I cannot explain. But I got a 686+ a few years ago, and I got over it. I really like this model you have HERE. Really nice looking revolver. Thanks, BB

    I have a 686-6+ i picked up from a pawn shop for $580. I know it has mim parts and a lock. I tell you it goes bang every time you pull the trigger. Its a very accurate gun. Never had it lock up on its own even under rapid fire with 158gr. magnum loads. Great video's bro, keep them coming.

      @PANICBLADE 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The mim revolvers are designed better. Firing pin on the hammer led to more failures than the lock ever will, and it is an issue no more. If the lock was as bad as you hear people claim, it wouldn't be there anymore. Been on the things for 20 years. Smith would be up their ass with lawsuits from revolvers failing to fire in defensive situations by survivors and family of deceased now if the claims were valid. Don't worry about them.

      @@PANICBLADE Excellent comment, I just learned something.

    • @PANICBLADE
      @PANICBLADE 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@82luft49 I apologize in advance since this got more ranty than I expected, but think about it. Kimber started putting their spin on external extractors on some of their 1911 models. They didn't work right and led to malfunctions. Guess what happened: they were removed, fast. Sig Sauer's p365 wasn't drop safe and they received complaints. Guess what happened: instant recall and design change moving forward. Smith would do the same if their changes made the firearms truly less reliable, and I know this for certain because they already have. Hell using the 686 (introduced in the 1980s) as an example, it had regular design updates since it's inception every few years, it even had an initial recall. These changes are indicated by the -#, meaning it's been through no fewer than 6 design revisions since its creation. Changes were made until the 686-6 model (-7 is a specialty model), which has remained in constant production since 2003. Smith knows exactly what they are doing and not everything is an attempt to cut cost at the expense of the customer.
      This is why custom ordered guns can be finicky out of the box and sometimes require break in times. You can still pay an inflated amount for a custom hand fitted non mim gun and such, but that means the tooling could be less consistent, occasionally leading to malfunctions despite the slight increase in strength of the materials. Form leads to function, and sacrificing an insignificant amount of hardness for parts where their function is not to bear stress but to move in unison is ultimately going to produce more reliability if it means they are formed properly every time. I'm not knocking people that buy or have those kind of firearms at all as a gun with forged steel parts smithed to the same standards that mim stuff is shaped to is the ideal (the companies that make them have earned their acclaim), but those are expensive and rare guns meant for enthusiasts, collectors, or shooting competitors. Find me a profession where firearms are regularly used and relied upon for the survival of those that use them and I will show you an overwhelming amount of mim guns.

    Nice find. 686-5 is more like 1999 production. -3 is around 1990. -5 has everything current production Smith’s have. MIM internals, frame mounted firing pin & a round butt. It’s the last model before the internal lock.

    ~I love Blued Guns, so I own the 586. Her Bluing is almost up to par with my old Python. Her Beautiful looks and her nicely grained Walnut Grips is what caught my eyes one day in early 2016 while visiting my LGS.
    ~Wow, she looks like a completely different gun. I can see her smiling.

    Revolvers are special. I used to carry a Model 10 (in uniform) or 36 (plain clothes). My first personal revolver was a Model 19 back around 1981 replaced by a 586 in 1983?? I just ordered a 686/676 last week with a 6" barrel, unfluted cylinder 6 shot matt stainless. Just waiting for paperwork and cooling off period. I am in Australia so 28 days wait.

    just to let you know the 7 shot cylinder and the 6 shot cylinder on a l frame are exactly the same size. they just drill them closer together and squeeze one more chamber in because if it was a little bigger it wouldn't fit the L frame there's not enough room so some people say the six shot cylinders are stronger because there is more meat there but I have never heard of a problem with the 7 shot cylinders I'm sure they're just fine

    • @kevinwilson9589
      @kevinwilson9589 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I would think the 7 shot cylinder would be stronger, because the cylinder bolt cutout on the 6 shot is cut in the weakest part of the cylinder. I had a bad experience with a model 29 no dash that I bought at a gun show. A previous owner had fired such hot loads as to balloon this area of the cylinder, making it almost impossible to eject the empties. I had to replace the cylinder. A recessed cylinder for a model 29 is VERY hard to find!

    The rusting of stainless depends on its grade. Very high quality stainless like a food grade 316L is non magnetic, it won't rust. I just bought a new 686-6 and it's magnetic it will rust in time if not kept oiled and dry.

    I had a new 586-1 and it picked up a little corrosion at the muzzle and the trigger guard. Turns out it was from the foam in the soft case. I replaced it with a faux fleece case and wrapped the gun in a super clean soft cloth and never had further problems.

    Our agency switched to stainless revolvers in the early ‘70s and I can tell you stainless will rust if not attended to. It requires less attention than a blue steel gun, but open carried by a uniformed cop it will rust if you’re not careful.

    There's all different kinds of stainless steel. Usually a magnet will stick to stainless, unless it's true stainless, but solid stainless is almost useless due to the fact that it cannot be machined too easily.

    I carried a 2” Model 60 working undercover in the early ‘70s and it will rust, especially in the warm weather, if you’re not careful. As to a 7 shot wheel gun I’d avoid it b/c of 50 + of handling a six shooter. Too much chance of a NG.
