I've played this amp in a guitar shop before and it really does bring out the guitar very well. In this video, the way the strat sounded was exactly how a strat should sound. It's an excellent amp for the price. Think I'll buy myself one of these soon
Love you guys! Thanks for the heads up on a another great amp. Oh, and thank goodness there is a 3000 mile ocean separating me from Guildford or I would likely be living every available moment in that music store.
Good advice. I'm living in Europe, Romania. We have a 30 days return policy by law for most of such products so I'm covered. But I doubt I won't like it :). It has such a smooth, fat, complex and complete tone :).
Rob and Captain, and everyone else. Please give Google feedback that the interstitails ads are unnerving. Makes me, and many others want to tune out. Thanks guys for all your good work!
Super video. Thanks! Bought the ht5r combo at a christmas sale. Just love the gain, ESF function for all the unbelievable valve tones u get. Ideal for home practice n small gigs. Just love blackstar as they listen to users n improve futher. Tis new revised ht5 has a bigger 12' speaker, reverb, seperate tone eq for clean channel, effects loop n a long 6ft footswitch.
I just bought the amp in the video today and it can definitely pull-off metal and modern rock with ease. It's an incredibly versatile amp and responds well to pedals. I've just been enjoying the crunch of it. Anderton's demos are some of the best you'll find on youtube, but even though they do a stellar job on their video production, it honestly does not do this amp justice. Go play one at your local shop. When I heard it in person I melted.
I like the the fact that you blokes have a bubble bath with your reviews. Just when I thought I'd spent enough on gear I stumble upon this review. Now I want one!
I heard a few months ago this amp was coming, didn't know it was gonna have reverb though. Was told it was gonna be called the HT-5 plus. All it needs now is a output switch to switch down to 1 watt and i think it would be the "perfect" home practice amp. Just my opinion, before the haters start!!!!!
Where do you live? In the states there's always Guitar Center. However, I would advise you, if you love the tone, to buy the HT5 an make sure there is a return policy in case you don't like it.
As ever brilliant demo. You guys blow the guitar mag reviewers away with your wit expertise and knowledge. Not that the mags are bad nooo. Just that you two nail it. Now where's me credit card.
This amp and a old Legend amp are what we use in the studio. Sometimes use a Pigtronix Philosopher's tone up front if the guitarist wants insanely high gain. The Blackstar does the modern hi gain sounds, has a nice creamy clean. The Legend does vintage crunchy and crystal clean. Then mix with Guitar Rig 5 (or not) in ProTools.
@georgebonney Having tried both, I think the HT5R has all the bluesy tones of the HT5 - just with a bit more bass end & reverb. Have a look at about 10 minutes into the video for some nice blues stuff... Cheers, Lee
Hi Rob! What do you think, is the HT5 would have been enough loud for bigger gigs as well, of course with a 4x12 cabinet atteched? Thanks for your aswer, Im very before of purchase some BS amp :)
Lol, it's freaky that I just thought about how epic a blackstar ht-5r would be, and then this video (by one of my favorite guitar players) was uploaded :)
Hate to say it, guys, but it's not "all tube" - it has a hybrid preamp, so a lot of the gain comes from clipping diodes (there's way too much gain for the small valve complement). Only mentioning this 'cos I like Andertons and I'd hate you guys to fall foul of advertising regulations :)
Have the HT-5H head with a 1x12' Blackstar cabinet and I totally love them! It's a perfect combination for home practice (well a little too loud for my neighbors) and I don't see getting anything else in the near future. :-)
Chappers i first saw you demo the Marshall class 5 at Marshall head office and have followed your stuff on and off, this demo and your playing is excellent mate i know you sometimes get crap from people but your playing and humor works. On the back of this demo i am going to purchase the HT5R head tomorrow from Andertons Top Job boys, play hard have fun ;0)
Getting back into playing guitar (I'm a lapsed bassist) .... very, very versatile little amp. You can do stoner/doom raunch, late 60s SF weirdo rock, Zappaesque mid 70s wonkery, Heavy or mellowed out blues ..... killer little box. Nice n' fuzzy, but cleans up pretty well. Warm and purdy. You guys are great!
from what i understand, the only difference is that the HT-5R has a built-in reverb an the other doesn't, but i think they both come with an effects loop so you can attach pedals anyway (although if i were you i'd double check that last part).
Might be an interesting idea to run two different amps. Hard to say really as they're all pretty different amps. What kind of style/artists are you going for?
Hi Rob! What do you think, is the HT5 would have been enough loud for bigger gigs as well, of course with a 4x12 cabinet atteched? Thanks for your aswer, Im very before of purchase some BS amp :) Ohh yes, a footswich is attached?
Hi, great post. I know the HT-5 fairly well and enjoy the backed off bluesy tones but from what I have gathered elsewhere and here there is more gain on this version of the amp and so I'm wondering whether it's lost some of it's bluesy tones in place of a heavier classic rock feel on the low end of the gain ... What do you think? Many thanks in advance.
As a practice amp i would go for the 5 Watt blackstar, not only can you make use of all those nice 5 Watts since its only for practice ( and 40 watts is a little over the top for a practice amp ) but you can also alter your tone by using the isf, and believe me this amp is really versatile! i have it myself :D
Don't know why I'm posting, but Captain and Chappers did a review on the Epiphone Nighthawk Custom, and I bought it. Then they did the HT-5R, and I bought it. I might have a problem.
+guitarfreak3422 I love it. I like the footswitchable channels (footswitch included), the effects loop, and the built-in reverb (even though I usually use my Nova Reverb pedal). The clean channel just has volume and tone, which keeps it simple, and the distortion tones are pretty great too, with a 3-band EQ. Plus, the ISF knob changes the EQ, giving you even more flexibility. And it gets so loud, much louder than I can play with in my apartment. I happened to get a good deal on the white HT-5R a while back. Haven't had any problems with it.
I got this amp couple of days ago, and it rocks hell! Les paul to seven string. And when my mxr Wylde overdrive arrives, its going to kick some metal ass!
combo means with the controlls and the speakers on the same unit, as opposed to a head and cabinet set-up, where the controlls and speakers are seperate
Chappers you've inspired me to get back in to guitar.. Cant believe ive never heard of economy picking untll now.. Thanks! Currently rockin a 100w jcm 900 which angers my neighbors... Torn between Marshall class 5 and blackstar ht5... Which one do you like better?
@georgebonney I've answered my own question using the manual on the blackstar site the EQ is now for OD only and the clean channel is only controlled by the tone control and (maybe) the ISF. I'm still interested if there's anything other than tube based distortion going on. Thanks!
I'm intending to buy the HT-5RH as well. Can it handle stuff like Avenged Sevenfold, Nickelback and Metallica? In this video it sounds kinda muffled, but maybe that's just the cab?
Is the clean channel still hooked up to the 3-band EQ given that there's now a separate tone control for it? I'd also second the question regarding diodes for distortion given that there is more gain now. Thanks
i think i prefer the mic, emulated sounds kinda choked if that makes sense, the mic gives it a lot more roundness, maybe due to the room ambience getting picked up as well?
Dude I'm wondering, why you don't have a Gibson at home? You sounded really good with it! :) Anyway, great vid and amp! I watched almost every single video of yours 'cause you are so funny and your playing is amazing! Greetings from Serbia \m/ And yeah, I'm still improving my English so sorry if there are some mistakes in the text. :P
well heres the thing when you put a amp through a cabinet it divides the power equally into each speaker. that is why its possible to have a 4x12 with 25 watt greenback speakers in to a 100 watt marshall superlead. the amp is going to put 25 watts of its power into each of the 4 speakers, so its sounds full equalling better tone. with a 5 watt head into a 2x12 will be 2.5 watts its just how it works. dont get a cabinet for that it wouldnt be ethical. but more speakers the sound travels farther.
hey guys love your videos! got a question, im a bedroom player that likes to play everything from john mayer to acdc to van halen. what would you recommend? would this work for that? thanks, hope you see this. also more vids with capt jamming some blues. love it. ~Dave
I am far away from knowing anything but yes the it can do great low volume OD sounds. How great they are for you, you should check it out at your guitar shop. For me it was the right decision for a nice little practice amp
That's a hard question, they're both really good I'd go for the ID:30 if you need the tone of an HT-5R but need the extra volume and need to sound good at low volume too
well guys, if you can help me: i spent few days listening to dozens of demos for various amps.. and by far I fell in love with the tone of ht-5r.. that would be a big step forward to me, I use a Fender Mustang 1 for the moment.. BUT.. I can't find a ht-5r here to play and listen to it for real.. i'm ready to order it though and my only concern is: do those 5W deliver a comparable or superior sound volume versus those 15W of the solid state Mustang 1? .. i fear it couldn't be loud enough... ty
@RobChappers hah, epic, my college course was written by shaun and Gus G is the end of a leg . how the hell do you get such amazing tutors ? other than a giant pair of brass .... instruments ;p
hey Guys im such a fan of yours! you guys are funny but at the same time are giving us the best reviews around! one question... can i connect any cab no matter how many watts has or there is some rules? i dont understand the whole thing about ohms.
A great amp, I have dozens of amps,, I manage a music store,, and the blackstar HT5 is an amazing amp with great tube tones.. Best part is its very portable,,,,,

@AndertonsMusic Thanks, good point. It's quite a dirty blues - I think you can hear the increase in gain (I could be wrong!) but it sounds great either way :-)
Just bought this amp, waiting to get it in mail. Do distortion pedals work well with this amp and do you just put it on the clean with drive off to use pedals?

Wow. Chappers is awesome. I loved that tune at the end.

@Miteour17 Yes that's right I was taught by Shaun and also David Kilminster... last guy to teach me something was Gus G ;-)
Love how Guildford is spelt wrong.
You mean "spelled incorrectly"?
Isn't it Guil>d
Super video. Thanks! Bought the ht5r combo at a christmas sale. Just love the gain, ESF function for all the unbelievable valve tones u get. Ideal for home practice n small gigs. what an amazing amp. Every time i hear one it sounds awesome and with such versatility too. Gonna purchase one as soon as i can
that's probably the best emulated output I've ever heard. I'm glad I decided to buy one of these
I like the the fact that you blokes have a bubble bath with your reviews. Just when I thought I'd spent enough on gear I stumble upon this review. Now I want one!
Great demo and also the song Rob's playing at the end sounds great.
@12:37 Chappers killing it. Sounds awesome dude!
Great job with this HT-5R Combo Demo ! Teriffic guy's . Rock on .
I heard a few months ago this amp was coming, didn't know it was gonna have reverb though.

Just my opinion, before the haters start!!!!!
By TH-cam's sound standards, this is probably the best Telecaster sound I ever heard.
Most importantly is that it's a "chube" amp. Gotta love the Brits.
HerdingDogRescuer lol
as opposed to a "toob" amp
Don't get me started on how the yanks mispronounce words.
Love the outro jam - awesome. And, personally, I don't mind the ads in your vids. You provide a lot of info - go ahead and get paid.
Thankyou guys for showing this! I was gonna get the original later this week, gonna wait for this one now :D
Hey Mr. Chappers... Is the HT-5 loud enough to rehearse with drums?
Rob you totally nailed War Pigs, your voice is awesome for that song. You should do a cover of it for your next album.
@somoshun No problem at all mate, as long as you can mic up and you have a good sound guy you would be fine ;-)
Where do you live? In the states there's always Guitar Center. However, I would advise you, if you love the tone, to buy the HT5 an make sure there is a return policy in case you don't like it.

now THAT'S a riff, very nice playin Rob! rock on! from a fellow guitar player from Chile xD
6:40 - that was a sweet little growl right there, loved it
@georgebonney Having tried both, I think the HT5R has all the bluesy tones of the HT5 - just with a bit more bass end & reverb. Have a look at about 10 minutes into the video for some nice blues stuff... Cheers, Lee
Hi Rob! What do you think, is the HT5 would have been enough loud for bigger gigs as well, of course with a 4x12 cabinet atteched?

Love the guitar playing on Rob's own tune - excellent.
Lol, it's freaky that I just thought about how epic a blackstar ht-5r would be, and then this video (by one of my favorite guitar players) was uploaded :)

This shows Blackstar listen to their customers. This is exactly the amp I asked them for. I would have added the DPR down to 0.5 watts too though.
Have the HT-5H head with a 1x12' Blackstar cabinet and I totally love them! It's a perfect combination for home practice (well a little too loud for my neighbors) and I don't see getting anything else in the near future. :-)

tyvm Dawg, it was really helpful indeed
keep up with the good work i've seen on your channel :)

Bodhidrop how loud!!!!!???????
Hell loud
You can really hear the difference between the Gibsons and the Fenders is this video as well.
I get my HT-5R tomorrow! Earlier than expected!
from what i understand, the only difference is that the HT-5R has a built-in reverb an the other doesn't, but i think they both come with an effects loop so you can attach pedals anyway (although if i were you i'd double check that last part).
Might be an interesting idea to run two different amps. Hard to say really as they're all pretty different amps. What kind of style/artists are you going for?
it does metal brilliantly, as long as you have decent humbuckers in your guitar
Hi Rob! What do you think, is the HT5 would have been enough loud for bigger gigs as well, of course with a 4x12 cabinet atteched?
Thanks for your aswer, Im very before of purchase some BS amp :)
Ohh yes, a footswich is attached?
HT-5R....R? Can I trade in my HT-5? Anyway is the 12 inch speaker Celestian?
Thanks again Anderton's for another great amp demo video!
Hi, great post. Hey Rob, This is gonna be my next amplifier. I am getting the Head and a blackstar 112 cab with it.
combo means with the controlls and the speakers on the same unit, as opposed to a head and cabinet set-up, where the controlls and speakers are seperate
Chappers you've inspired me to get back in to guitar.. Cant believe ive never heard of economy picking untll now.. Thanks! Currently rockin a 100w jcm 900 which angers my neighbors... Torn between Marshall class 5 and blackstar ht5... Which one do you like better?

Demo makes the sale, after listening to this Im SOLD! ordered it today!
Popa Chubby ????? Damn I love this guy, glad to ear some PC from you Rob !
Expecting this in the mail today! Half-stack version, good deal from Andertons!
Hey Rob, this amp can be louder than a drummer? even if it is "hooked" up with a 2x12 cab?? thanks guy, and sorry by my bad english =S :)
Well done mates! Awesome video of an awesome amp!
I'm intending to buy the HT-5RH as well. Can it handle stuff like Avenged Sevenfold, Nickelback and Metallica? In this video it sounds kinda muffled, but maybe that's just the cab?

And yeah, I'm still improving my English so sorry if there are some mistakes in the text. :P
If the D.I. actually sounds good, that feature with the speaker options is really cool!
That's "Typical Girl" from Rob's former band, The Black Hand. He jams to it in the Two-Rock Andertons review as well :)
Les Paul sounds great on "Bleed The Light"! Like the amp!
well heres the thing when you put a amp through a cabinet it divides the power equally into each speaker. that is why its possible to have a 4x12 with 25 watt greenback speakers in to a 100 watt marshall superlead. the amp is going to put 25 watts of its power into each of the 4 speakers, so its sounds full equalling better tone. with a 5 watt head into a 2x12 will be 2.5 watts its just how it works. dont get a cabinet for that it wouldnt be ethical. but more speakers the sound travels farther.
Still love this old video, just got one on its way used.
A very big thumbs up for the Sabbath riffs!
Riff around 10:10? I know i used to know that song on guitar
U2 - Vertigo
Thank you!
OMG Chaptain played U2!
@GuitarRazze Oh, found out that it has a ''tone'' control on the clean channel :P
hey guys love your videos! got a question, im a bedroom player that likes to play everything from john mayer to acdc to van halen. what would you recommend? would this work for that? thanks, hope you see this. also more vids with capt jamming some blues. love it.
~Dave
I love that track chappers, dorian mode is about the best thing for guitarists I think; maybe lydian second best.... Opinions?
@andord123 Absolutely dude, hook it up to a 4 x 12 and it is LOUD ;-)
So glad you brought out the Hufschmid...
I've just bought one one of these...it's awesomeness in a little black box
I am far away from knowing anything but yes the it can do great low volume OD sounds. How great they are for you, you should check it out at your guitar shop. For me it was the right decision for a nice little practice amp
You forgot to mention the foot switch. And is camera wet as the amp rather than dry? We are losing focus any a times.
All tube (means pre-amp and power sections are tube/valve), but the reverb is digital.
That's a hard question, they're both really good I'd go for the ID:30 if you need the tone of an HT-5R but need the extra volume and need to sound good at low volume too
@robchappman So a Gibson les Paul standard ok that's great but why did you use a fender strap? Xp
i like alot of bass in my modern metal tone, does this provide that, also what would you recomend the ht5 or ht20 for modern heavy metal??
well guys, if you can help me: i spent few days listening to dozens of demos for various amps.. and by far I fell in love with the tone of ht-5r.. that would be a big step forward to me, I use a Fender Mustang 1 for the moment.. BUT..
I can't find a ht-5r here to play and listen to it for real.. i'm ready to order it though and my only concern is: do those 5W deliver a comparable or superior sound volume versus those 15W of the solid state Mustang 1? .. i fear it couldn't be loud enough... ty
@RobChappers
hah, epic, my college course was written by shaun and Gus G is the end of a leg .
how the hell do you get such amazing tutors ?
other than a giant pair of brass .... instruments ;p
hey Guys im such a fan of yours! you guys are funny but at the same time are giving us the best reviews around!
one question... can i connect any cab no matter how many watts has or there is some rules? i dont understand the whole thing about ohms.
Is this too much for a bedroom practice amp if living in a side by side duplex? Do you have to crank it quite loud to get overdrive tones?
A great amp, I have dozens of amps,, I manage a music store,, and the blackstar HT5 is an amazing amp with great tube tones.. Best part is its very portable,,,,,
I've just bought the Atomic Amplifire and love it but in the video for it they used one of these. I've never been very impressed with Blackstar amps but I am looking for one with an effects loop to try. I like Roland amps and was thinking of maybe a new Jazz Chorus 40 as I mostly play clean, however I wondered if maybe I should take a look at this? I play at home, small gigs and record.
Yes, Footswitch is included
does it really have much more gain than the original HT-5? as jamie stated?
thanks for the answer rob :)
I have a bunch of pedals , Boss TU3 , CS3 , BD2 , CE5 and a MXR Carbon Copy Delay . Will the HT-5R have enough headroom & power to handle the pedals WELL ? ..... Jerry
For about a year now I had plans to buy a Blackstar HT-5...I got rushed into buying a Fender Mustang III (good amp) but...I had to get it refunded because it simply did not have that sound I was looking for.
I own the amp and love it. I guess the "Built in Korea" keeps the price down.
It will be the same volume, if not louder. It can get incredibly loud when you have it gunned with a shit tone of gain. I'm also about to get the Ministack version, and that was very loud at about 9oclock on the volume dial. I was sat next to it lol...
Hope that helps!
you were very ''sabbathy'' in this video. I love it!
hey rob, do you know if marshall are gonna do an updated class 5 thing to compete with the new blackstar?!?!??
emulated outpout sounds nice but through mics sounds kind of thin and fuzzy. maybe if you mix them both together mmm that would be sonic awesomeness
No doubt this amps sounds great, And a effects loop ? Wow ! Would 5w be loud enough to play with a drummer ?
