One of the most underrated, under-appreciated and under-celebrated voices in Rock-n-Roll history........Mickey Thomas.
I think so do, you never really hear his name. But his voice was incredible.
Your right about everything except this performance gene and Vito and definitely this is a LACK LUSTER Performance what a Shame they were fooling around to much during this PERFORMANCE 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
I don't think Mikey is underrated - he's a top performer and is associated with world class acts
Not one band in 2024 can come close to this singing
You can bank on that comment! Nothing out there today interesting in music
Who's here in 2024? ..We had the absolute best! And not just the music! Our lives in general were as beautiful ✨ "halcyon days"☺️🙌🙏🫂🎉💜🕎🍀🌻
Here , here ! I saw this line up do this in a small Virginia Beach club in '76
They don't make music like this anymore 😥 What a performance.
Definitely Mickey Thomas' talent and unique special voice were "criminally" overlooked by the music "experts" out there. Nobody will ever sing "I fool around and fell in love" like Mickey Thomas did. He is extraordinary!
The only other person that comes close to Mickey singing this song is Henry Lee Summer th-cam.com/video/2dYX8lb0Rug/w-d-xo.html
They made a huge mistake letting him him sing lead on that song- hello, Jefferson Starship? Sure I’d live an audition!
Saw Mickey and Elvis live at Disney World. I was like Wow that guy can sing. Didn’t surprise me Starship picked him up.
Micky Thomas ...he is up there with Steve Perry. Micky has a killer voice !!!!!!!
There was so much great music, and so many great vocalists in the 60s and 70s. This is the music I grew up with.
Love them both..different, great voices. 1950-1989 will never be duplicated again...unreal amount of great bands and talents. For Pop, 1970s was THEE best decade. Matt
70 yrs old and loved this song then. It played over the grocery store sound system today while I shopped and I couldn’t help stopping and singing along with the music. Sigh I miss all the great music of my generation.
that retarded lesbian backing him up just blows my mind with her weirdness.
AMEN!! I LOVED this song when I was YOUNG, and then I crushed on my high-school sweetheart. Well, low and be held. It was his favorite song as well as mine. Well, guess what? We fooled around listening to this awesome song and music. We truly FELL IN LOVE and got married. It was fate. Last night, I heard our song by Elvin Bishop. Again, tonight, and it made me think so strongly of my love, my husband in heaven. I was just awakened again with this music playing I FOOLED AROUND AND FELL IN LOVE by Elvin Bishop. I lost my husband my love in 1996 here it is now, 2024 and I've heard the song Twice in the past 24 hours that tells me he is my angel in heaven and he is sending me a message to remind me we fooled around and fell in love.💜💛🤍😇 now it is okay for me to move on
A real underrated classic. Mickey Thomas was one of the premiere voices of my generation and does not get recognized enough.
I was a freshman when this incredibly amazing song came out.... LONG LIVE THE 70'S !!!
Elvin Bishop's name was on this single...but without Mickey Thomas, this great song never becomes a CLASSIC...and THIS vocal performance ( including the female BGV) is an amazing example...and this guy sang like this EVERY NIGHT...he can STILL sing like this, and it's nearly 50 years later!
Elvin knew that. He was kicking it around for a year or more. He brought in Mickey as backing vocalist, when he needed another song for “Struttin’ My Stuff”, the producer suggested Fooled Around, but he could never make it work in his blues singer/guitarist style. He suggested Mickey take a stab at it, because he knew a tenor voice would work well with it. The result was pure magic.
Really, last time I saw him live, he was struggling, but still did a good job.
1975, as a 6yr old black kid, from Midwest,r&b in my house. Shouts to WLS in Chicago for blending the music culture! Turned me on to Fleetwood Mac and many others that I still enjoy today👏
Right on WLS...I would pick up its signal on my transister radio at night in mid Michigan.
Yo no tenia equipo de musica y tenia que ir a escucharlo en varias casas,.y arrendaba radios para llevarlas a casa, ests temazo.es un gran clasico.de la musica MUNDIAL
If you are fortunate enough to call yourself a 'baby Boomer" like I was, we grew up listening to the greatest assortment of musical talent that any generation had the privilege to enjoy...and we saw them in person. The list of artist that have earned the title of 'legend' is long and incredible. From Woodstock to the Beatles to the Rolling Stones to Jackson Brown to the Eagles and so, so many more'. Our parents were often referred to as the 'Greatest Generation', well, we damn sure are the luckiest. Our playlist will never grow old or die....who are your favorites?
I agree 100%! I’m 64 and still playing classic rock covers with a 6 piece group. That music will live on. What a great time we had back then😀
I'm the GenX generation past you, or half generation, and I'm still catching up with what I missed.
Lost a laptop hard drive in 2011 with 7,000 songs, many of them classics from this era--60s/70s/80s.
Love this song!
Marshall Tucker Band,
Fleetwood Mac, Linda Ronstadt, the Eagles, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Olivia Newton John, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jackson Browne.
Man, we had the best, didn't we?
@MarshallLanier-oi1mk Great list but the more I think about it, the more names come to mind. How about Prince, Clapton, Steve Winwood, The Fine Young Cannibals, Roy Orberson, K.D. Lang, Beach Boys, LED Zepplin, Little River Band, Dire Straights, The Who...these guys still make me feel good whenever I hear their music. This list is far from complete. And yeah...we were born when great music was the rule and not the exception...
1st kiss from a boy from Bamberg SC at the ripe old age of 13 to this song - To Steve, wherever you are.....
I was 14, listening to this in London. I knew first time l heard it l'd never forget it......
It's 2024, I'm 64 and still listening to this. Best version.
She's terrific. But MT - what a voice. He can still belt it out like this today!
It's up the in my all-time 100 favorite songs
Mickey Thomas and Burton Cummings.....two of the best male vocalists ever!
You must be a vocalist yourself to recognize that. I couldn't agree more.
You can always hear the gospel influence in a singers voice, theres nothing like it
Agreed such an Angelical voice..He masters his vocals..I'm glad I grew up to this type of music..God bless you all❤
@11henger yeah it is, but he credits his singing to growing up singing gospel
Mickey Thomas....one of the top ten voices in all rock history. This vid is a gem.
I do agree. Check out Sanford Townsend Band- Smoke From a Distant 🔥 Fire. It's Pretty Fkn impressive as well.
That VOICE!!!!! One of the best period. The lady singer is also belting it out as well. A great LIVE performance!
Dang. I was 14 in ‘75.
My hair was exactly like that then.
That’s what firstcaught my future wife’s eye.
We dated for three years and July ‘23 will be our 42nd anniversary.
Many thanks to all of the wonderful’70s and “80s rock legends. Thank you so much.
Congratulations on 42 years of marriage, she must be one hell of a good woman!
That's awesome! You're about a year older than me. And you have immaculate taste in music my friend!
Similar story. We both had this album (and other Elvin albums). One night 44 + years ago, she came over and never went home.
Happy upcoming wedding anniversary!!! You've been married almost as long as i've been breathing 🙂 blessings on your Journey 💜🙏🏽🕊️
I was best friends with Elvins daughter Salina. I wish I could have stopped her from moving to California. Rip Salina Bishop. Her and her father had the same smile.
I was very good friends with Jennifer Vallerian who married Elvin . The whole thing was just so overwhelmingly sad. We worked together at Memorex back in the day...early 1970s.
Met my high school girlfriend when this song came out, played it on my Pioneer Supertuner 8-track tape deck in my 1968 Camaro when we went out. This was when music was MUSIC. I have not seen her since 1976 but ironically my sister is still friends with her. She always tells my sister "tell Richard hello for me"
met my wife in 1976 loving this song we are still married after all these years, love it.
I was 25 in 1975 and loved this song. Still enjoy it to this day. I'm 74 now. What a voice!
Back when you actually had to have talent. What a great song
I was only 7 in 1975 but remember hearing it around the house, this song is timeless for me , back when music had character and more soul, 55 now time tested song right there where does the time go😮
Music was better before music videos. Unless you went to a concert, you couldn't see the singers, it was all about the sound, on an album, or on the radio, now half of these singers are more famous because they have the right look and moves and the music comes 2nd or even 3rd.
Yeah Right #!!BULLSHIT didn't cut it back then. WHAT
THE HELL HAPPENED ?
When your voice is as phenomenal as Micky Thomas's you can sound great even in a Jean romper!
Give Elvin credit for stepping back and letting Mickey take the vocals on this one.
The great Elvin Bishops highest charting song ever.
Oh and he has albums of the best music. Such a class act and fun story teller. Elvin is the best
GREAT vocals by Mickey Thomas, here. Technically perfect, from the standpoint of pitch, tone, timbre, and timing. Furthermore, his ability to manifest the emotions is top-notch. He adds very special textures, colors, and inflections to his intimate phrasing and delivery. This is a true Master Class for singers in any genre.
I had the same impression. Mickey’s performance here is pop perfection. He’s got a great voice and it’s pitch-perfect. As is his body language: he looks like a goddamn movie star. His vocal range is phenomenal, and his phrasing and improvising are so heartfelt, you know he’s not not just going through the motions. Mickey works the audience methodically toward the payoff, that fantastic guitar solo. No wonder these guys were referred to as “the best bar band in the world.”
When we are doing Karaoke we imagine ourselves belting it out like this, but his vocal talent is truly extraordinary. And the bell bottoms on the whole band. Classic.
She tried to pull him off Just a little bit on the oohs with her harmony but he wouldn't budge
Lawd have mercy he SANG that!!!! Mickey Thomas!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🔥🔥
Mickey Thomas is one of if not the most underrated singers period
I am 53 in a few days ( 31st )
Have a great soundtrack for the majority of my life and I never knew that Mickey was singing this , I was literally just blown away from not knowing and from how obvious that it is !!! I guess the name Elvin Bishop was the band ? I better go back to my Playlist and make it play more than I have been!!!!
Love his backup singer!
@@bixfrisbee2623 I believe she is Reni Slais. Can't find much about her. She was an artist in her own right.
This decade was just golden .
Golden? More like UNOBTANIUM, nowadays people think Taylor Swift is vocal excellence. Even though Adele or Beth Hart can blow her out of the water. I worked for a radio station in '85 and got to hear Ann Wilson warm up before a Heart show, she shook the walls, concrete, and unplugged!! Her sister Nancy apologized and said Ann was under the weather, lol. I was 12' away and my chair was shaking ffs!! If that was under the weather, I'd be scared to hear her that close when she was on point and one hundred percent.
I was hooked on this song the first time I heard it. What a great song. And what a great singer. 👏👏👏
This may be the best vocal performance in Rock and roll history. A long-forgotten song before Mickey Thomas ask Elvin Bishop if he could sing
Mickey’s voice is so strong it takes over all other sounds. Super underrated singer.
Underrated by who? Certainly not by Elvin and fellow musicians since he then would become lead singer with Jefferson Starship and recorded many hit songs.
@@francinecorry633 and if your not a musician or someone who studied it and you asked average joes who was the singer of starship most people would probably say Grayce, or I don’t know
@@JohnDoe-qu7gm I made a mistake the lead singer was Marty Balin.
This song is absolutely priceless. The vocals. The lyrics. The guitar solo. This is legendary music. Somethings will never probably see you again. Lord have mercy
That voice gives me chills. No auto tune just pure talent. Where did that kind of music go. 😢
I hear ya Brother, I’m gonna be 61 in two months. I remember when you used to have to have Talent to make it in the music business. Richie Kotzen of the Winery Dogs does a good version of this song but it ain’t no Mickey Thomas!
Reminds me a little of Bobby Kimball's 'Hold the Line' (Toto) - on 'Jane' especially
What a pair of lungs..
Who was the female singer in the elvin bishop song "Fooled Around and Fell in Love "?
@@charleshales4634 The lady giving a truly wonderful performance alongside Mickey Thomas' own was Memphis Belle, Reni Slais.. (or so I'm told)
All round brilliant! The gal moved like a female Joe Cocker!
Most played song on radio in the 70's
In 2023 still just as priceless 😊
It just doesn't get much better than this... Mickey is marvelous on vocal! He MADE Starship into an iconic and still-loved band!
Mickey's awesome but Marty Balin wasn't too bad either is Grace Slick, awesome video
I didn't know that was the same singer. good to know.. explains why I loved both .
@@vincentberte7675 I've seen them all through the years! Marty and Grace used to play the State Fairs every other year in California from Pomona to Sacramento ...
And I've caught Mickey on lead vocals too...they opened up with this on my birthday few years ago at the Santa Cruz boardwalk.... awesome!
Always good and have always had the same flavor through the years!
Eric Underwood Class of 81 Downey High school CA ✌️❤️🇺🇸🛐🗽
Plus he’s wearin the hell out of that jumpsuit, the hell out of it!!
I'm so glad I grew up in this era.
I'm 66, music makes me tick, turn off the lights and play Pink Floyd, pulse. Loud. It energizes me.
1975 What a amazing time for music. I miss it so much
8-4-23
Song almost fifty years old I can’t stop listening Beautiful
Elvin and the band are lookin sharp! Peak 70’s right here…
Mickey Thomas has a unique amazing voice and the female back up singer is wow a great backup vocal
Anybody driving with me when this song comes on the radio has to endure the solo being played at maximum volume (11!!). All conversations must stop. Between Mickey Thomas' vocals and Elvin Bishop's chops, this is one of the best songs to come out of the glory days of rock - the 70's baby!!!
best live vocal I've ever heard.....whew!!!!!!
Mr. Bishop wisely chose Mr. Thomas to sing lead on this song, but the resultant success was far beyond all expectations. Kudos to each person who had a hand in its success, especially Mr. Thomas.
Amazing voice, the first verses could easily be a studio version, but then you realize it's all live, crazy skills
This takes me back to 1974 when Elvin first played me the new song he was working on. I says to him "Elvin", I says, "you got yourself a nice little tune here, but "I Fucked Around and Caught the Clap' may not be the most commercial title." He took my advice to heart and here we all are a half century later!
Maravilloso, que calidad y entrega, infinito, infinito, muy lejos de los actuales indecentes.
Been listening to this since I was a teen in the 80s and I never realized who the singer was, I thought it was Elvin Bishop! Mickey Thomas is incredibly soulful, and this is till a beautiful song. Love this performance.
this was when you had to have skills, what a voice, it just rolls off.
My dad hipped me on this record back in 1978 and i loved this song ever since. Has me thinking about my old days as a player. A very bluesy song.
Georgia boy who had a voice that was incredible. What a gift.
Mikey Thomas is so awesome in this video, what an awesome Rock and Roll voice right there y'all....
Fell in love in 1968 and I am still in love with same lady. 55 years ago and I guess you could say "I fooled around and fell in love!"
I graduated high school in June of 1975 and started college that September. What a great song and a great time to be a young man with this type of music to discover.
I bet bro. I grew up in the 1980’s. Great times. It’ll never be like that ever again.
Same here. I saw Elvin Bishop open for ZZ Top at the Seattle Coliseum that same year and listened to this live. Gave me chill bumps then and now.
Mickey has one hell of a voice. Great song!
I was born in July 1974, so I’m sure I first heard this as a little baby. I’m still listening at 48.
My husband wanted this as our wedding song to dance to, way back in 1979. 😂
Outstanding live performance
This is a song you never get tired of listening to and Mickey Thomas voice is incredible.
2024 and still has the same power it did in 1975, I was 15,
You can't get tires of hearing it.
His backup singer was awesome.
What was her name? I think I seen a clip with her singing with Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds too.
@@michelledeaton5014I think that that was Helen Reddy. Similar look though
Great song. No studio tricks. His partner on stage is singing the hell out of this song. Fantastic.
@@larrymeininger166 They performed that song very well. Amazing performance!
@@richardnorth5821 Yeah, but I can't get behind that stiff legged dance of hers!!
mickey thomas's high alto voice is amazing ... great song ...!
La chica vocalista tiene una voz preciosa, pudo ser una estrella famosa y reconocida mundial mente.
Damn his vocals are just scary good .. so much confidence and control ...
This is the other song that my husband and I had as our songs! 2 of them! 44 years and still going strong! Love this song ❤
I listened to this song on the radio a thousand times when it came out and thought no big deal. I know better now.
Same, who would have thought this was as good as it would get, a high-water mark.
Tulsa’s sheriff~Elvin Bishop; love him and this song. Mickey’s & Reni’s voices are amazing together, & that drummer ooof he’s hot! Classic tale of falling in love . . . 🥰
A microphone, an amp, and Mickey...it doesn't get any better than that. And of course, Rene ❤
i remember hearing this song as a child (maybe 5-6 years old) and being drawn to the vocals in the late 70's. I was BLESSED to grown up in a house where good music was always playing and with parent who had great taste in music across all genres. It wouldnt be until years later that, as a teen, i learned that Mickey was the singer (because as a kid i though Elvin Bishop was lol) only because i was enjoying Starship and specifically, the vocals. Mickey has always been amazing.
Sophomore in High School when this came out, never forget it. Mickey went straight to Starship and kept ascending what a voice. Saw him with Starship on the Modern Times tour, from the 4th row In front of Craig on his BC Rich Mockingbird guitar...Grace and the gang killed it all night, one of the best shows I ever saw.
Natural talent right there people no autotune
Totally. It's called practice and releasing 2 lost words in today's music industry.
This song sounds as good today or better than when released. I listen to this track on my headphones and it just blows my mind. Grew up with this music and find it still stands up today.
If only I could go back in time... I love you Mickey Thomas!!
I can see why starship grabbed Micky to sing for them. What a voice
One of my all time favorites, awesome music
Notice how Micky retires to the back when finishing the song...... I assume because he was officially a backup singer in the band and to allow Elvin to formally take the applause.. even though most of the applause would have been for Micky's brilliant vocals
No, Elvin was hosting this Midnight Special show. After this song Elvin had to stay on to introduce Van Morrison. Mickey went backstage because some other guy was going to sing backup to Morrison on "Domino" (along with Reni) Elvin's band backed Morrison on "Domino". Weird, but that's what happened.
@@marjorieanderson8626Are you sure? I have seen the midnight special video with Elvin and Van doing Domino, but it is dated 1977, Rene Slais has different hair, and Mickey Thomas is singing back up too.
Yes, you are correct, eveboldt653. And Reni and Mickey both sang back-up on "Domino" with Elvin's band
I’ll echo the comments of so many others - the voice of Mickey Thomas is truly rare and spectacular.
One of my all-time favorite bands, & songs. Mickey absolutely one of the best singers to grace a stage.
2023 love this song ❤🇺🇸. You know they’re showing jumpsuits like this in the fall fashions 😂 my mom always said styles come back around 😂😂. Gotta love it!
One of the greatest singers ever
Mickey Thomas’ voice “clear as a bell!”
I too was 14 when this song was a hit. Man can he sing. This was the slow song you wanted to skate with the girls to. 🕺🏻❤️ The 70s was a great time to be young in America. At least in my world it was.
Mid seventies masterpiece, Don’t make them like this anymore. 🤫
This song has always brought a tear to my eye for its truth, Mickey’s phenomenal vocals and Elvin’s soulful lead. Desert Island song for this old rocker.
Hey macmor- Couldn't agree more! Throw in Dylan doing "Knockin' on Heaven's Door", some vintage Tower of Power, David Clayton Thomas, Jay Black, Roy Orbison.....oh man...I hope the island next to yours is for sale!
Never, never tire of this absolute classic song. 👍
This was an epic performance! I also love that song "Sara" Mickey is a helluva singer.
One of the best songs ever written and performed! Perfect!
Without question, on the short list of greatest songs. It is stunningly perfect. Even Mickey couldn't top this performance. Can't think of any singer that could top this.
In my opinion that is the most accurate and true test of a singer and that is singing live and he proves without a doubt that he's a true singer
