Elvin bought me a hotdog in 1967 during a break at the Cheeta, below zero in Chicago, maybe 300 people,he invited my four band members to sit on the side of the stage on folding chairs. The next thing I knew some guy was yelling at me,asking where the stage was,It was Jimi Hendrix ,I helped him on the stage. He sat in with Butters greatest band ever,Elvin came over to us, guitar case in hand and walked out, we were astounded to say the least. Saw Elvin play quite a few times later on, one of the great humans on this planet, thanks for the inspiration. Thank you guys for putting this out there!
Before Bill Graham started giving the band a venue on the West Coast they played a lot of university concerts. I saw them at Pauley Ballroom at UC Berkeley in late 1965 at a freshman welcome dance on a double bill with another new band that we did not know, The Jefferson Airplane. What a concert! Blew my mind and made me a lifelong Butterfield Blues Band, Mike Bloomfield, and Elvin Bishop fan.
I had a chance too talk with Elvin one nite before a show and he was so down to earth such a cool guy, being a huge fan of his ever since “Juke joint jump” I was star struck he’s the best
When I first hear Elvin Bishop playig with Al Kooper in San Francisco, He become my prefer blues white guitar player, because he was original, not copy black artist special his incredible moves in glisandos with the low notes, and pick powerfull high notes... he was with Mike Bloomfiel and Amos Garret and Geoff Muldaur, way better the all the Englis fellows..
