Ranking All 120 Story Mode Levels in Super Mario Maker 2

- One of the biggest new features added in to Super Mario Maker 2 has to have been the story mode. This story mode features 120 different levels used to show off different tips, tricks, and ideas for how players can create their own levels. However, some of these are better and worse than others, so today I’m going to be ranking all 120super mario maker 2 story mode levels from the worst to the best!

@@joaboveaverage mario maker and pikmin are made by the same develping group, and I’d much rather have Pikmin 4. Just my opinion.
The shape of the room in Underground Coin Collecting is the same as the original Mario Bros for arcade. That's a really neat reference (They even put the pipes!) that definitley moves the level up a bit.

yo that transition at 23:00 was sick. I really liked that it looked like mario was getting pushed up by a twister when in reality it wasn't there
6:37 I feel like you would've ranked it the same or lower if it wasn't an autoscroller. The autoscroll is the only thing enabling the lava bubbles to be a consistent obstacle throughout the entire level, without it, you could simply wait at the start for them to pass and then follow after them, at which point it would just be a pretty standard water level.

I agree, plus I feel like this also applies to a lot of the other auto scroll levels on this list. Without the auto scroll, the vast majority of these levels would either not be fun, or just break apart, since the mechanics used compliment the auto scroll feature. I kinda feel like Odyssey Central is missing the point of a lot of these levels.
@@SennaTheSennaI disagree. He has said he doesn't like auto scrollers. So he isn't missing the point he is just stating his opinion. And personally I would rather be able to speedrun through auto scrollers instead of waiting. No disrespect to you though :)

As someone who speedruns the Story Mode regularly, I find some of your rankings quite interesting, when taking into account my personal experience with these levels. Some levels like "Dirty Donuts" and "Secret of the Dry Bones Shell" I fully agree with placement-wise, but there are others that shocked me when I saw where they were placed.
For example, "With A Lantern" has a really cool strategy where you can grab a 30 coin halfway through the level much sooner than intended by hitting the very first P-Switch and combining it with super tight movement. It makes the level MUCH more intense, especially when you consider all the enemies lurking in the dark you have to maneuver around along the way. "Para-Beetle Transfer" is another level I appreciate, because you can bypass waiting through the entire last half of the level by leaving the Para-Beetles behind and precisely bouncing off of the two Goombas at the end. (It kind of makes me think that Nintendo knew people were going to speedrun the Story Mode, in all honestly.)
On the other hand, "Red Yoshi's Highway of Flames" has my vote for the worst level, because even experienced players can die multiple times in a row to the towers of Munchers. I realize the challenge is intentional, but most of the time it feels like you die to that obstacle just because you were unlucky, rather than it being a skill issue. Not exactly a fun feeling, whether you're speedrunning or just playing through casually. :/
I realize that speedrunning the game puts me in a rather biased position with most of these levels, but I think that's part of what makes lists like these so interesting to compare and contrast. This was overall a good watch!
Its a good ranking but i don't really like that he judges the levels on one single thing sometimes. Like, with your example, im pretty sure he just put it low because it's a dark level and that's it. It's pretty annoying how he sees the dark levels as inherently bad,like anything else in the game it's just a tool that can be used good or be used bad. It's kinda dumb to dismiss every dark level simply for being a dark level

I had an idea I tried to execute where you carry a pow block in the SMW style, completing puzzles without having it explode.

What I personally enjoy about #50 (the dry bones shell smb1 castle one) is that every pipe that spawns a Dry Bones Shell, you have an option to enter them for a small challenge for some coins (usually big coins). It makes the level very unique

Well this obviously indicates combat against dry bones, so this is 100% without doubt foreshadowing dry bones getting into super smash bros.

The only story levels I remember from this game were a desert one where you fall down a vertical sub area, and a really really cool puzzle level using the SMW sky theme. I also remember the stone and toad levels specifically because I kept wondering why I couldn’t use them in my own levels (don’t remember anything else about them though lmao)

Edit: These levels were #9 Ancient Seesaw Fortress and… idk what the cloud one was, might’ve just not been a story level after all lol

Hey, I'm glad to see the return of the Mario Maker 2 ranking videos, speaking of returning video series how about doing more Mario Maker 2 Tips videos, I really enjoyed that series and just incase you can't think of any ideas here are some suggestions: How to make a good first level, how to use Dry Bones effectively, how to make good auto scroll levels, and how to make good underwater levels. (BTW, you may have already done some of these my memory is a bit fuzzy).

Let's go, I agree qith your first place without a doubt, too me the reason it's the best levek in my opinion is it feels like a minigame sort of level, like you can do and try a bit of everything.
When I first got smm2 I didn't have the nintendo online so I just played this and this is what got me hooked on the game, I love playing this so much, even more then smbud so far.
Also, as for number 39 this is the only level that made look at a walk through cause I just didn't know that yoshi's tounge can break through walls lol.

I like how the final level of the story mode ends with a reference to 3D world.
Number 48, threat level porupuffer, had an infinite coins route where you can keep getting one ups then dying to get infinite coins
This video reminded me of how much I struggled during some of the levels (mainly because I did the story mode very early and MM2 is my first MM game) and I didn’t need that.

I've had I idea from what you said about sail the sky without jumping, is in mario maker 3 it they brought back clear conditions and specifically the no landing one if they added a "soft landing" block that wouldn't fail the clear condition if landed on so doors can still be functional for situations such as where the had the twister elevator

Lava Bubble Limbo: The scrolling is actually probably what's keeping you from just leaving the lave bubbles off screen, so I feel it actually has a purpose here.
I genuinely enjoyed every single level in this game, even though some were too easy and simple and others too difficult and frustrating, I still had a good time on every level. I was super surprised by the quality of the story mode

I'm planning on remaking the story mode levels with a bit more to it (from adding new bonus sections not really anything is needed (like the first level) to making a boss required & for levels with something you can't use in the editor i'll just try finding a work around (the original idea was just remaking tyem to play them as anyone but fixing some things like making a boss fight required is a better idea
