Super Mario Maker 2 has a lot of elements to make levels with, however what might just be the most complex set of them are the items. A majority of these items act as power-ups for Mario to use, but with each power-up having several different abilities there were bound to be some worse than others. So today I’m going to be ranking all 30 items in super mario maker 2 from the worst, to the best! I’ll also be giving a few tips and ideas as to how to use these items in levels as well, since this list is based on how good an item is for making levels with.

We needed the Ice Flower for NSMBU, Hammer Suit for SMB3, To be honest they are fan favorites and for the hammer suit we haven’t seen that for over 30 years the Ice Flower people have wanted since the first Mario maker come on Nintendo we need this for the next Mario maker.

This is super obvious, but I couldn’t agree more. We seriously need those along with the penguin suit maybe as an alternate to ice flower

The goomba mask (and maybe the red pow) can be used as "spikes" for levels with bullet bill masks and propeller masks because they dont allow you to do anything midair.
Now that I think about it, you could totally use it in an "Avoid the Powerups!" style level. Just put a challenge at the end that's impossible without a certain enemy type moving.

@@StalinkTz To be fair, that's kind of the entire purpose of the Rotten Mushroom. But yeah, it does kind of suck that one of its better uses is as a deterrent lol

8:13 Just thought I’d point out another key use for both the boomerang flower and the cannon box. They can travel through clear pipes. It’s a very useful mechanic for Kaizo levels as well as puzzles.
The Fire Flower's simplicity is what makes it so easy to use. Because it's so basic, it's not just for a specific level type.

I really like the idea of a video of yours addressing how many of the power ups could be improved.
I really think it's a shame what they did with the frog suit. There are quite a few changes they could make in order to make water levels actually fun to play.
I've seen many levels that use underwater guimicks that i really feel it's a shame that they cannot work with better game mechanics.
The ice flower and the Penguin suit, would be a really great addition to water levels.
I'm a Metroid fan, and i gotta say, I'm really impressed how a world like maridia from so many years ago it's so much better and fun than many underwater levels, even when they're well designed.
I think a power up like that weird squid from super Mario Odyssey would be a great addition to make water levels less boring.
I do enjoy them, but i can't denny i have so many complains about them that just make me feel upset of how they could be improved.

Another good video on this is "Which Super Mario Maker 2 Power-Up is the Absolute Worst One?" by Ceave Gaming. It's (at least on some items) a very different point of view, while still ranking how useful a power up is. Definitely worth checking out, it's made in a, in my opinion, very funny, creative and yet still interesting way.

You can make little timmy / hot garbage levels with it.
It’s especially good if you put it in a hidden block so only the creator knows where it is!

Another neat thing you can do with regular coins and certain power-ups like the fire flower or Master Sword is you swipe at them with other power-ups to move them and have them activate note blocks containing certain items. While not ideal for traditional levels, they're great for puzzle levels.
Ok, let's all agree that IF Dry Bones Shell was an item, there would be no doubt Odyssey would rank it #1

I've seen some pretty cool levels using the Goomba mask like one where you have to keep the Guma mask in some situations so the thumps don't go down or get you killed While others you have to take it off so they can bring you closer to the goal
You actually forgot about the fact that in the NSMBU and 3DW styles, the Super Mushroom allows Mario to ground pound a Question Block/Brick Block with a coin in it ten times consecutively, instead of only one coin at a time. 🤓

Pretty agreeable list! Personally I've found Cannon Box and Boomerang Flower to be hard to use well in levels, as they just kill almost everything in one clean hit (3DW does not have many bosses either) while not being as finicky as the fireballs are.

I like adding invisible blocks with Frog Suits at the beginning of my levels, as a gag basically. So i guess that's an use.
For some reason, the koopa car is defined as an enemy, even though it should be a powerup/item. If it were in here, I'd rank it near the bottom.
In theory, it's cool. It speeds mario up, can drive on dangerous surfaces, and can be jumped out of at any time, so it can be used to get a height boost. But it has SOOOOOO many problems.
For one, it's an item you have to design the whole level around. This limits its scope but Mario Maker isn't really designed around it either. You can zip through long horizontal tracks in no time, so it's tough to build meaty challenges around it. That's also because, it's got the Sonic problem where it's just too fast. You have to give a fair amount of warning so that the player could reasonably expect what's coming up and that takes even more time. And something about its jump feels clunkier than Mario's regular jump. I can't explain it.
Finally, just it's base use is difficult. It always spawns with a koopa inside, so you have to kill him in advance if you want to speed up the process. Even getting in the car and starting it takes relatively forever. And you can't even put them inside pipes/bullet bills to respawn infinitely, meaning if you want to build a course where you need a car and NOT have it be too punishing, you need a LOT of reset doors.
I would really like your “how smm2 power ups can be improved” video. You do those types of videos really well.
Anyways, this list was pretty great! Can’t complain about any of the list tbh.
It's sad how hard the Big Mushroom was nerfed in SMM2. I love how it could also break walls in SMM1, and I miss the filter giving enemies mustaches.
Not to mention you can't put it in the other game styles anymore either (I mean, it didn't really do anything in the other styles, but it was still kinda cool that you could basically place a dummy powerup in your levels).

Not only do I agree with #1 but it should also be mentioned that it's essential when doing progressive power-ups that can be used in many different ways

I think you were understating the usefullness of the red pow mask, the 3 use limit can be used for puzle levels and it can be used to make dint hit the celing levels.

I do find some of the items u ranked lower very useful for troll levels. Ive used so many frozen coins and frog suits for my levels over the past year.

Frog suit is the best because you are even slower on the night sky theme! And it will take forever to get anywhere!
The frog suit is amazing for tech, experimental platforming, trill levels, challenges and all underwater levels. It is amazing and I will die on that hill. Plus in nighttime ground it can be used to make perfect randomisers

I love the frog suit because I really like frogs, but I agree it's not great on land. I'd change it to be like the Frog capture in Odyssey, keeping the hop, but Mario doesn't stop every time he lands, making it faster.
Would love to see how you'd fix the powerups in mario maker for sure

I just realized how this entire list is based upon how fun they are in mechanic based levels whilst fire flower is higher because it’s one of the most simple items
You can place goomba shoes without a goomba with an instantly exploding bomb set-up
For a creative use for the Goomba Mask try the level “Bean Burrito: Line at the DMV”

The biggest addition that's needed for a sequel imo is a way to give permanent power-ups, having them be lost upon taking damage is way too limiting.

I remember that time I got a multiplayer level where you needed to get a mega mushroom from a ? box to progress with the level so I got one and broke the ? box softlocking the other players from finishing the level letting me the only one who can finish it.
I wish they developed a full SMB2 theme like it seemed they planned to. Instead, we just got a SMB2 powerup and a couple SMB2 elements, which is cool but a whole new style would’ve been awesome
I think an employee said that they were actually making concepts and thinking about adding it until it got scrapped because of time or something like that.

I can tell you what are my top favorite flying type power items of the whole Mario series. It’s Power Balloon, Super Crown, Super Leaf and Wing Cap.

Honestly I do think the coin, big coin, and 1-up are right where they should be and not any lower. From Endless Normal-Super Expert, they're the best tool to carefully place after challenges to help you maintain a good number of lives.
best item for me is the smb2 mushroom because in the night theme it jumps when Mario jumps

I probably would have put coins, one-up mushrooms, and big coins between fire flower and super mushroom tbh. I’ve made plenty of levels without fire flowers, but making any level would be completely different if you didn’t have coins and big coins/one-up mushrooms.

Tbh I think the super mushroom is the top power up. Its simplicity allowing another hit makes it a classic item that can fit into almost every level.
I'm surprised that nintendo hasn't even tried to make more then one sub level.
