She is the best, "Vocal Technicians" I have ever heard! Her legato was excellent, she sang in the mask otherwise known as, "Fowered Placement" She actually "Trilled" she, rolled her "Rs!" Her crescendo and decrechendos were fantastic! She also has a substantial volume to diet lose when necessary! She was one if the overlooked artists and underrated singers In musical history! She was a much greater artist than many other singers who were calibrated over her! It's truly a shame, she wasn't recognized for her wonderful technique and artistic accomplishments, She is now my favorite Mezzo-Soprano. I have fallen in love with her" Beautiful Voice and her great technique! I wonder if she ever taught anyone her technique? Did she produce any other singers who became famous? I'd love to find out if she did. She is becoming an obsession with me! After all these years if hearing her name but not her voice it going to drive me crazy trying to find about her career, if anyone knows about her please Email me at: jjhan2@optinline.net and inform me about what information you know about her career. Thank you in advance. Jim Hanrahan, that's me.The only other singer I was this interested about was, Jussi Bjoerling! But I heard him twice at Carnegie Hall and Hunter College Concert Hall. He was, Magnificent! Both my wife and myself never forget his beautiful voice and wonderful interpretations of his program, it was filled with Lieder" Arias, Art Songs and songs in several languages! He also sang, many encore numbers! It was always a great evening always enjoyable.e
It is lovely to be able to add the physical presence of Nan Merriman to her fine recorded legacy. She was greatly missed by many concert goers when she retired and you see here what a radiant presence she was. A great voice and interpreter.
This make me cry, so beautiful!!!!Never seen much live footage from Miss Merriman.A very beautiful voice, Always! So warm and without sentiment, just pure music.
Hello, Kadoguy! Glad you posted this gem. And, it's in English! Good audio here. This is relatively late in her career, five years before her retirement in 1965. You can hear her go from full voice into a subdued tone at the end, following her practice of changing her voice to suit the material. This looks like an excerpt from a larger performance, because it does not end with a cover shot including Nan and the orchestra. Glad to see video of her, since there is so little. I've been through all the NBC Symphony video I can track down, and there is no video of her. Thank you for posting from Joe Z.
Trying to translate the 2nd (actually 4th) verse: "Once, in the fragrance of Spring that fills my senses, once I shall there find a home, and, swimming, clean my soul. In everything Spring carried towards me, in the flower I gathered, I thought the spirits of my ancestors were dancing and sighing. Therefore, among birches and pines, I found in Spring a mystery. Therefore, the sound in the flute I cut, seemed to be weeping."
What a wonderful singer she was, a radiant personality! As she sings "in the air", how airborne her voice becomes! Only one misgiving: the English translation is rather ordinary, vastly inferior to Aamund Olavson Vinje's Norwegian original
Dette er nydelig. De store sopranoer kan grense til støyende. Jeg oppdaga mezzosoprano Marianne Kielland, som synger Våren. Det er behagelig med mezzosoprano.
very lovely soprano singing. thanks for sharing this gem.
Why, oh why, am I only now discovering Nan Merriman?!
Bliss!!!
One of the great mezzo-sopranos of her time.
I have become addicted to her voice! She is fabulous! I am enchanted with the sound of it!
