This is real opera singing. Using the whole body. Breathing very low. Using the chest voice so correctly as she did. Bravaaaaa. What a privilege to watch this fantastic singer.
How on earth can anybody have given this a dislike.... absolutely lovely and rare treasure to see Nan Merriman in action as well as hearing her shining voice
"Fantastic!" I can get enough of her voice! She sings with such feeling and ease! She is was underrated! I'm a singer myself and I just heard her recently and I can't understand why I haven't heard of her before this! I have become addicted to her voice.
Nan Merriman what a most gracious lady. Her stage presence is beautiful and the appropriate colour black. Very important things for singers to consider. I learned this from a good friend who is a costume designer. Nan Merriman is truly one of the greatest singers and artists who ever lived. Great conductor and orchestra as well. What a beautiful interpretation.
Wow, never heard of this lady. What a divine voice. It was a pleasure listening to this in Italian instead of the usual French. So surprising that there are not multiple recordings of this lady's beautiful voice.
I recommend that you look at the playlist I have created. There are close to 100 videos displaying her great artistry. th-cam.com/play/PLD888ECA1D5184E75.html
An important point: the inclusion of the preceding recitative, which is so necessary to make us feel the pure C major of the aria as really tragic. The grief is too great for a minor key, nothing but the major will do. When the aria is given alone, one can miss this effect.
@@victoriataylor5584 normally, but the poster was suggesting it's such a big outpouring of grief that the melancholy of a minor tone isn't suited, I guess. I think it was an interesting view
Thank you again for letting us not only hear this lovable singer, but also see her and experience her personal radiance! All that goes on in the music is mirrored on her face.
She deserves to be far, far better known than she is. She is the Dorabella in my recording of Cosi fan Tutte: superb, with Schwarzkopf far less mannered than she became. A very strong cast.
Miscast and terrible. This is not any good performance by Nan, and its a shame because she has sung other roles far better. She needs to leave the masculine roles to the men who can perform them like Ivan Kozlovsky, Tito Schipa, and Luciano Pavarotti.
Emily, if it's " a shame", I even can't imagine how wonderful she is in her other parts. I' m afraid, lvan Semyonovich Kozlovsky, a tenor, could not have sung this aria even if you had asked him.
Since Gluck wrote tthis for a castrato to have a man sing this music it has to be altered. Do you feel that way about Cherubin, Komponist (Ariadne auf Naos) and Hansel other travest roles? I've herd the Schipa and felt that he hadn't the slightes idea of how to sing Gluck who did rewrite the music for a tenor when he wrote the French version which lies very high.

I’ve never heard of her. Stellar job on this.
Probably, these people are fans of Kim Kardashian's husband, who accidentally wandered here)).
I have been ignorant of Nan Merriman. How lovely. She shimmers.
Ashtonishing! Beautiful voice, good diction, remarkable dramatic talent. Charming!

Me too!
Underrated, indeed! Callas was the idol at that time.

Actually, it isn't. Grief should be in a more minor key.
This is a dark time for the lover.
@helgeevju Brilliant point you make!

Welch wunderbare, warme Stimme, ein Ohrenschmaus. Gibt's heute wohl nur noch ganz selten, leider
I learned to play this melody a few or more years ago and didn't realy realice how beautiful it is
What treasures these live videos are! Oh how fortunate to be able to hear and SEE this great artist. Thank you so much.
What an incredible voice! She moves me far more than Baker or Ferrier.
Beautiful. Super voice.
Из всех женских голосов люблю контральто!, Какое счастье , что я слышу эту певицу. Невероятно , пронзительно, Спасибо.

Che meraviglia!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️
Bravissima!!!
I liked it a lot: especially for the perfect adaptation of the tempo to the spirit of the lyrics.
Ich mag vor allem ihr Vibrato!!!
Das hört man heute gar nicht mehr-vor allem nicht bei dunklen Stimmen-aber es klingt so natürlich❤

Muy buena!!!!!!
The. only singer, apart from Callas, to catch the right accents in the last four bars.
i didn't understand one word
It was in italian;)
Beh, meglio della Horne.

@@ВикторияПостоева-з3ж You forget that Tito Schipa did sing this and even better! He was a true Orpheus.
@@emilygreene3460 Sorry, I can' forget what I had not seen. I'll try to listen toTito Schipa and have my opinion. Thank you for a new(for me!) name.
