George Harrison's last words with Ringo Starr

  • The last weeks of George's life, he was in Switzerland, and I went to see him, and he was very ill. And, you know, he could only lay down. And while he was being ill and I'd come to see him, I was going to Boston, cos my daughter had a brain tumour. And I said, "Well, you know, I've got to go, I've got to go to Boston" and he was... phew, it's the last words I heard him say, actually... And he said,
"Do you want me to come with you?"
Oh, God. So, you know, that's the incredible side of George. God, it's like Barbara fucking Walters here, isn't it? You know...

Jesus Christ saves you eternally. THE GOSPEL
For God so loved the world that he gave is one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
      John 3:16
      WHY WE NEED JESUS
When God created mankind, he created us in his image, to live in community with him. As a result of sin, we have been separated from God since Adam and Eve. Throughout the Bible, specifically the Old Testament, we learn of the lengths that had to be taken to repent and atone for sin. Sin was prevalent, however, and the constant disobedience of Israel showed the Lord that humankind was sinful and would remain that way.
The Lord, still desiring to be in community with us as we were created, decided to send Jesus- the Son of God- to earth as a man. For most of Jesus’ time on earth, he lived as any other man. He learned in the synagogues and lived in obedience to his parents (Luke 2:41-52). When he was around 30 years old, he began his ministry and, in the few years he taught prior to his death, he performed miracles and taught the people about the love of the Lord, how to live according to the Lord (Matthew 5-7 is a great place to start), and how they had distorted the law.
As a result of his ministry, Jesus was crucified. In his suffering, he refused to speak against the Lord and he forgave who were unjustly sentencing him to death (John 18:20-23, Mark 15:2-5, Luke 23:34). His sinless, human life was taken as the ultimate sacrifice (John 19:28-34). Three days later, he resurrected (Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, John 20), confirming his identity as the Messiah and the Son of God.
We ALL have sinned and we all fall short (Romans 3:23) as a result of living in a broken and sinful world. The Lord recognized our need and sent Jesus to be the sacrificial lamb to redeem us (John 1:29).
You may be asking, “Why? If we constantly sin, why would God do that?” I ask myself that. The truth is that God’s love for us is steadfast and extravagant (Lamentations 3:22-23). He created us in his image (Genesis 1:26-27) and loves us like his children (1 John 3:1). His grace is unending and, even if we don’t deserve it, he never gives up on us and there is nothing that can separate us from his love (Romans 8:38-39).

We Liverpudlians are renowned for our happy-go-lucky personalities. I think it stems from hardship and poverty. Liverpool has always had poverty ever since the days of the Irish Potato Famine in the mid 19C. when it was a major port for poor Irish people escaping the famine to transit to America ; Many of course stayed, including my ancestors. In the face of adversity, people had nothing else other than their humour to fall back on. Ringo lived in a relatively poor part of Liverpool know as The Dingle in a tiny terraced (row) house. On a related matter, I used to occasionally visit and play in Strawberry Fields as a kid which used to be the land on which a children's home stood. It has recently been bought by a property developer. If you are interested, here is a Google Maps link to it. www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.3803971,-2.8839056,3a,75y,117.52h,86.03t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sNxrehpeoFE-bCR57rctk9w!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

That shows he can care for not just his friends, but for important people in other people's lives. He was a great singer and guitarist. Back in 1964, when the Beatles were about to start their first huge world tour, Ringo couldn't go with the band because he had just undergone a tonsillectomy. A guy by the name of Jimmy Nicol actually played the first few shows. Postponing the tour could have been financially disastrous, especially since at that time a lot of people, including the group themselves, felt Beatlemania might be a flash in the pan and it was imperative to strike while the iron was hot. George's initial reaction was: "If Ringo ain't going, I ain't going. No way." He relented only after assurances no permanent change was remotely possible.

@@ventatranspo8935 I'm not sure if George exactly brought Ringo into the group...... when Ringo was with Rory and the Hurricanes they would play sometimes on the same night as The Beatles in the Kaizerkeller in Hamburg. When they were all through and George, John, and Paul would hang around for late night drinks and jamming on more hardcore, bluesy, less pop songs, Ringo would sit in in those late night sessions. They all started to think to each other at the time that it just sounded better, tighter with Ringo.
Fast forward to 1962, when The Beatles were in EMI to record Love Me Do and George Martin brought in his own drummer because he didn't like Pete Best, it's possible George Harrison at that point suggested Ringo join the band. Sort of a "hey remember what we thought about Ringo when he'd sit in with us in Germany" sort of suggestion.
