    Might be worthwhile easing off on the mixture settings once the flaps are up - you are burning fuel for not much benefit (but not too much otherwise you will lose power) - just keep an eye on airspeed in level flight, with a constant throttle position. Ease the mixture knob towards lean until you just start to see a slight airspeed reduction, and that's fine. In the "Real World" that'll reduce engine wear / carbonisation and give you extra range per 100 gallons.

    • @Doofer911

      I completely agree however the intent with my first 4 or 5 videos was to get COMPLETE beginners up into the air so I didn't want them worrying about things like Fuel Mixture. The default planes in FSX are very forgiving so you can throw them about without much consequence.

    • @phils4634

      Doofer911 Fully agree with your intentions - and as said before you do an excellent job. It would be interesting to see how many of your 12,600+ subscribers will take up PPL training as a result of your really good videos - I'd not be at all surprised if "more than a few" future PPL holders might look back and say "your videos were the reason for me doing this" - and that would be something to be VERY proud of!

    Thanks for the good video. Im thinking about starting to try Flight simulation from absolute zero (I´ve watched some videos like this one), but I don´t know where to start from. Things about navigation seems something confusing to me (VOR, NDB, IFR, flight charts and stuff/acronyms like that) and I dont know where to start (I know that I need to learn with Cessna 172 first). Maybe visual flight and once learned the basics then proceeding to navigation? do you have some advice for a total beginner? Thanks!

    Question Doofer. What keyboard combination will allow you to not only get an external view of the aircraft your flying but allow you to move around the plane? i.e. pan left, pan right, tilt up, tilt down, again while viewing the plane externally. I see alot of TH-cam authors for FSX aviation videos using this technique but am unclear how to do it above and beyond the FSX standard "static" external viewing modes with my joystick.

    • @Doofer911

      Nope I set them up in the FSX Settings, I personally have Flaps Up/Down (incremental) on the smaller top buttons and Pitch Trim Up/Down on the larger buttons. I also reduced the sensitivity on the joystick, I found that planes responded too quickly using the default sensitivity.

      Usually you need to Trim when you're climbing, descending, leveling off or changing speed. The idea is to have the plane hold a constant pitch without having to hold it on the controls yourself.

    • @Doofer911
      @Doofer911  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +firdaus kh I don't think it's easy to convert a joystick into a yoke I'm afraid. The mechanics of how a joystick and a yoke work are completely different. A joystick which has a throttle slider/lever and that side to side "twist" is perfect for flying though. A lot of real world planes have joysticks instead of a yoke for controlling the plane. You know that HUGE Airbus A380 plane.... pilots of those use joysticks ;)

    Once you find the degrees on the trim make note of it so it’s easier later

    • @Doofer911
      @Doofer911  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing is, Trim is often managed by "feel" in a real aircraft, so you'll rarely have a precise trim setting. It's something you need to adjust constantly as the plane changes speed, attitude and altitude.

    Trying these excellent lessons again after a break from Flight Simming. Got a decent PC now so all good. The problem I have, that I keep having, is with getting the trim set properly. I have followed the instructions, but every time I try to trim for level flight it ends up shooting past 0 on the vsi and puts me either into nose up or nose down. Don't seem to be able to find the sweet spot as easily as you do. I have a Black Widow flight stick with two buttons assigned to trim. Any more suggestions ??. Ps. videos are awesome :)

    • @Doofer911
      @Doofer911  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Matthew Hinchliffe Hey Matthew, glad my videos are helping! :) As for the Trim, are you holding down the buttons or tapping them? I usually tap the trim button to make tiny adjustments. In the sim, if you hold it down it will adjust the trim slowly then suddenly speed up if you continue to hold it. So what I do is tap the button and slowly get the trim into the correct position. Hope that helps, if not let me know and I'll see if there's any other tips out there

    • @DrFantomas1
      @DrFantomas1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Doofer911 Yeah, the videos are great, tbh I think I am probably holding the buttons down, I'll try tapping them and see what happens. Every time I've tried learning to hand fly rather than using the autopilots, I get frustrated at this point heh. I'll persevere with it and hopefully it'll become second nature :) Thanks again.

    • @Doofer911
      @Doofer911  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Matthew Hinchliffe Learning to fly it manually is great! Will definitely help you understand how the aircraft behaves when you do certain things so it's worth learning. It's really rewarding to manually get the trim set and get the plane perfectly balanced. And you're right, once you figure it out, it is second nature ;)

    During take off at the runway, the Carenado PA46 Meridian always steer to the right. I tried everything, trim the rudder, check google for help, but still having the same problem. What have I done wrong?
    Secondly, while cruising or climbing, when auto pilot is activated, the plane goes out of control, it pitch up very high or dive to the ground, why is that so?
    Never have these problems with FSX nor PDMG planes.

    • @Doofer911
      @Doofer911  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure, you might have to raise it on Carenado's forums to see if anyone else has had the same issues. If it's not happening with any other planes, then you can at least narrow it down to that specific product.

    I am finding these tutorials helpful, however i seem to have a problem my Cessna 172 is banking left with no input and it is hard get everything else right while having to correct it. i notice from your videos that you do not have this problem. I have calibrated my Thrustmaster Hotas X so i cannot understand why it is happening.

      Maybe wind, maybe P-factor ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P-factor ).. or maybe a windows error. There was a similar issue with the logitech yoke which was extremely annoying.(www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?260158-Saitek-Pro-Flight-Yoke-LEFT-DRIFT). Check out if the fix presented does work with your HOTAS as well.

      When the plane settles the elevator trim tab will always be level to the ground, although the entire plane will be in a slight angle based on the position of the trim tab when set.

  • @dolphinszz2291
    @dolphinszz2291 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    @ 7:55 - 8:46 I know you mentioned how you have the trim controls mapped to a couple of buttons on your joystick, but what if you still do not have a joystick/yoke made for flight sim. I constantly have trouble whenever I cruise, because I do not have a joystick/yoke. I have to use a mouse; and when I try to uncheck the 'Mouse Yoke' option I can't keep it at a level cruise because the plane either pitches too high up or too down. So, I wish I could adjust the trim automatically, but I do not have the flight simulator equipment to. Is there a solution to this? Thanks for reading and have a nice day. (P.S. I am already up to the Air Traffic Control tutorial in the series, but I went back on this video to add this little comment.)

      Doofer911 it’s been 2 years since I left that message lol. I used to watch your videos all the time and I used to be a massive AvGeek but I took a massive break to pursue rollercoasters and become a coaster enthusiast. Also life got busy with sports and other things. I am going to start watching your FSX tutorials again because they really not only taught me how to understand, FSX but understand some aviation terminology. You did an incredible job, producing these well done tutorials and you best believe how appreciative I am for them. I want to thank you for being a blessing of my childhood for FSX. I don’t know if you remember me but I was the beginner rookie guy who would go on your streams and in your comments asking a multitude of questions. Again, I’d like to thank you and thank you for giving me the chance to learn how to love aviation. From, Zach.

    • @phils4634
      @phils4634 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The full name "Propeller Factor" gives it away. Although the prop. "disk" is symmetrical, there is a slight thrust difference between the port and starboard sides - this happens in the "real world" with real aircraft too, and is obviously a speed effect. I don't know if simulation packages have rudder trim, but that's how you fix the problem. Alternatively invest in a nice modern aircraft with a constant speed, variable pitch prop which goes a very long way to eliminate this particular hassle :-)

    Hi Doofer,
    I think you might have answer this before. WHere can I download a flight simulator for cessna172 like yours and practise at home? Is there a link? Can I use it with keyboard/mouse only (I have no joystick).
    Thanks

    • @Doofer911
      @Doofer911  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alan Wu Hi Alan, the simulator I use is "Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition" which you can buy on the Steam website (Steam is like an online store for games). If you don't have that, you can still get the original Flight Simulator X which comes on a CD.
      It is possible to fly with a mouse and keyboard however you may struggle a little bit controlling the plane like that. I'm not sure where in the world you are but you can get a joystick for as little as £15 and it will make your flying experience much easier and much more fun.

    • @1chopstix
      @1chopstix 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Doofer.
      I am located in Canada. Before I purchase it, I would like to know whether it will only work on one computer after I install onto that one particular computer OR I am able to switch back and forth between computers (laptop and desktop)? I am asking because I am new to Steam and I want to be able to use the simulator with my desktop at home and also use it with my laptop when not at home.

    • @1chopstix
      @1chopstix 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also,I dont recall you mentioning the control of carb heat in the video. Do we get to control that in the simulation? Thanks!

    • @Doofer911
      @Doofer911  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alan Wu Yep, the joystick will definitely work on both your laptop and desktop. Best to make sure you get a joystick with a USB connection just to be safe.
      As for Carb Heat, there are some aircraft in the sim which let you adjust the carb heat, then again I might be confusing that with Cowl Flaps. I think some aircraft in the sim do have extra controls for controlling the temperature of the engine but I'm not sure how accurately modelled this is. As far as I know, the Cessna 172 in FSX is a varient which does not have carb heat, it has direct fuel injection instead.

    • @1chopstix
      @1chopstix 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I meant the "Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition" itself (from Steam website). If i purchase and install it using my desktop, can I use it on my laptop too?

      Doofer911 I've tried but most of my settings are set from high to ultra (just how I like to play and my computer should be able to handle it since it can handle more demanding games like gta 5). • @jamesrussell2936
      @jamesrussell2936 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I recommend unlimited for the frame limiter because it takes CPU power to limit the FPS. Also, try plugging in your laptop when you try to play and see how it works then.

    Trim is useless..!!

    • @Doofer911
      @Doofer911  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I beg to differ. During takeoff in a simulator you can't appreciate it as you don't have any real "feeling" or force feedback. In a real plane, with the trim set incorrectly, when you pull back, you'll feel like lifting weights! With the trim set correctly, it's like lifting a bag of sugar, much less effort required making the plane easier to control.
