    Thank you for posting this. My 125psi/25 gallon compressor hasn't worked properly for several years. Initially it fills, but won't recycle without blowing the breaker. Upon inspection I found the same broken plastic on an inner cover. My model is slightly different from yours. The switch is just held in place by a properly fit cover. The upper screw hole on the cover had broken so it fit crooked. I notice your switch is held by two screws. Mine had the holes but no screws. A couple of long screws, toothed washers and nuts secures that firmly in place. I tapped the case and used a flat washer with a long screw that now holds the cover on properly. Also, I discovered inside the cover one of the two position terminals had broken off the cover. A 1/8" pop rivet with backing washer put that back in place. It might have been touching one of the other 2 terminals causing a short. Now it works again perfectly restarting with 80 psi in the tank and not popping a 15 amp breaker. I'm glad it wasn't the capacitors. The run cap is easy to find, but the 3 wire start cap is not. Thanks again.

    Found this while searching for a cover/part replacement, as the plastic finally became so brittle I couldn't CA glue it anymore. Thanks for the creative repair idea.

    I've got a vertical that loves to trip the breaker. You described a Craftsman POS perfectly. This one is my 2nd one and I turned my 1st POS with a pump issue into a great sand blasting rig. When running a construction project there is no time to wait on a fix so I bought the 2nd POS. Now that I have some time and thank you for the video I will troubleshoot this machine and see if I can find as elegant of a solution as you did. The duct tape really gave me a chuckle as I remembered the Red Green show. If the ladies don't find you handsome they had better find you handy!!!

    THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! I was losing sleep over this and was dreading the thought of having to buy a new compressor. 😩 I was thinking it could be the starting capacitor but lo and behold I stumbled across this video. This was the EXACT problem I was having...seems to be a common problem with these compressors. 10 minutes later I've got a quick and easy fix and it's back up and running. Rather than making a bracket, I just used a longer threaded screw with some larger washers to hold the cover in place. Seems rock solid! Thank you again for shedding some light on this problem and recording this video. 🙏🏼

    I picked a like new vertical air compressor 33 gallon that I think has the same issue. The seller wanted a higher voltage compressor in his garage so I lucked out. He did save the parts (that will eventually fail again) on the cover so I thank you for your wonderful video.

After watching your u tube, I went back out and pulled the cooling shroud. Lo and behold the damn thing was broken just where yours was. Thank you for this tip and repair.

    My compressor had been sitting for a few years. I thought it was the capacitors but that was not the fix so I put it away. I'm restoring a sailboat and needed bigger air, I came across this video, went right to the shed, dusted off the old compressor, did this fix in about 10 minutes and WALA! Good as new. Knowledge is power so I thank you sir for taking the time to make and post this fix.

    Thank you for saving me a lot of time and money trying fix/replace my compressor!! I have the Craftsman 25 gal upright model 919 which is about 25 years old. I was having the same problem except mine quit working all at once and was sparking, smoking, making a grinding noise, and tripping the breaker after a few seconds. I was able to fix my compressor by replacing the top housing mount screw with a 2 1/2 inch screw and a washer. The bottom screw was fine, housing not even cracked. Compressor is running like a champ!🙂

    Thanks for the information! I got a free 30 gallon from my neighbor because he had the same issue. I ended up 3D printing a replacement cover, extending the mount for the switch 2mm too make a better connection (read online that even from factory that switch sits a little too far back), and making the mounting points thicker to prevent them from braking again. It’s working like brand new now! Hell it looks brand new.. dude barely used it.

    I wanted to thank you very much for this video. My motor end shroud has a small crack on the top but it was still seated fine. After replacing both the start and run capacitors, I was still tripping the breaker regularly on startup and when the compressor tried to repressurise at 120psi. Knowing the motor end shroud was seated properly, I turned my focus to the contactor assembly for the pressure switch that you mentioned. I sprayed some Deoxit D5 that I typically use for guitar and amplifier potentiometers on the contacts of the pressure switch and it not only started fine after that, but it also restarted as intended at 120psi. Not sure if this is a common problem or not but it certainly seems to have resolved my issue of regularly tripping breakers with this compressor.

    Had this exact problem with my 2004 made Craftsman model 919.168700. It got progressively worse for over a year and I couldn't figure it out. Tried different circuits, I knew the breaker wasn't the issue, nor was it anything in my garage wiring. Once I took the cover off (that was the toughest part...why these a-hole engineers use the dumbest type of screws in the dumbest places is beyond me)... I immediately saw the rear portion dislodged as you said, plastic pieces broken from nearly 15 years of wear and tear. I thought it was the capacitors for certain, but I saw that little pressure switch, and something told me to figure out what the heck that did. God bless TH-cam, it's saved me so much time and aggravation over the years. I used racing tape and replaced those worthless communist star screws with simple Phillips machine screws and boom! She runs like a clock once again. Thank you good sir!

    Thanks for the video, I really appreciate it. Mine is the vertical version of yours and I think it is basically the same motor. The start capacitor busted and i put a new one in that was little bigger around and it did the same thing it was doing before which is just exactly what yours was doing. I think it was because i couldn't get the cover back on flush and mine has the screw tabs broken off also. Both my capacitors checked good so Im going to try what you have done. I didn't know how that switch worked behind the cover so thanks for the explanation. I put a new piston ring and head plate on it because one of the reed valves was broken and it ran fine for a while. Going to try this tomorrow. Thanks again.

    I had a similar problem. I would switch on the compressor and it only kinda half started, kinda like a car with a dying battery. I watched this video and opened it up, but all was good. I called my electrician and he said he thought it was a power company issue. I have overhead service and he said to call the electric co and have them come out to check for a corroded neutral at the pole since the neutral is usually not insulated. They came out and cleaned all three wires at the pole, but the problem persisted. I called them again and they cleaned the three wires at the house and that solved the problem. It was an Edison problem. So keep that in mind if you have this problem, or a similar issue with high power draw tools or appliances.

    Thank you same issue on my craftsman model nbr 919.165070. The top and bottom plastic holds disintegrated over time and the compressor will not start and throws the breaker. Hold the cover on tightly and it starts perfectly. Brilliant! And the screws are star shaped torx - t20 seems to be the correct fit to remove the two covers.

    @pfun41 - Like many other viewers leaving comments - I too was thinking I had a bad start capacitor. I have a craftsman compressor with a plastic cover holding the switch like yours and my cover broke as well. I used a strap like in your video. I would have never thought the broken plastic was the culprit but once I strapped it, and tried it, it works perfectly. Thanks to your video I saved money by not buying a new start capacitor, and saved time waiting for shipping of a new capacitor only to realize that was never my problem in the first place. Thanks for the heads-up!

    My compressor starts working and builds pressure up to 150psi but sometimes during work it will not start and won't keep tank charged. Sometimes it turns on only for a few seconds then goes quiet. Sometimes I hears something that it wants to start like air going somewhere through the pipe for about 2 second and then quiets and stays like that. Fails to keep up pressure in tank when I use it. Pressure goes low as 50psi but compressor doesn't start. Then I had to open drain valve to release remaining air pressure in the tank. Disconnect it from AC power for few minutes and it starts working again build up to 150psi again. I don't hear any air leaks. What could be wrong? How to fix it?

    Heads up dealing with a problem with my 27 gallon craftsman but the compressor is identical to the 4.5 gallon porter cable air compressor.

    I know this is an old video, but how does that centrifugal switch come off that shaft? Mine is broken and I need to replace it

  • @bird2002
    @bird2002 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I opened mine to find that the cover was also broken. I suppose it was a design flaw of this GE motor after seeing how many other people had the exact same problem. Once I bolted it down, it attempted to run (even spinning for 3 seconds) before tripping the breaker. I suspect the Run Capacitor is bad because the Start Capacitor manages to get it running, then when the centrifugal switch kicks in, the Run Capacitor cannot maintain the load and trips the breaker.

      Turns out both of my capacitors were good. It’s still tripping my breaker. Looks like I have a short circuit between the hot and the neutral. Any ideas what I should try?

      I re-watched your video and noticed that my wires were crossed. Soon as I swapped the colors to match the ones on your capacitors, it started working. Thanks for this video! Just fixed my compressor!

    Does anyone have any thoughts as to what could be causing the same startup/ trip breaker symptoms but with the cover not being broken? I tried replacing the start capacitor, it runs for a few seconds, and then shuts down.

    Funny, they made two different types for that model then, you got Horizontal and I have the Vertical one from '04. The compressor has suited my needs over the years and has never been a problem, until about 2.5 weeks ago... The breaker threw when I was testing it out, the motor acted like it wanted to start, but then the breaker... So I took that whole back plastic cover to a shop and had the Capacitors checked. Well sure enough one wasn't working at full capacity. I replaced it, only problem is the new one is larger, so its mounted on top of the motor. The plastic shroud fits right over top like before. She's back up and running just like before! Here I posted the video I took after the Repair! th-cam.com/video/08TdvPnlJnE/w-d-xo.html

    Can anyone tell me how the capacitor is wired in the red and brown side? Does it matter how they are hooked up or what prongs they go on??

      It's AC so polarity doesn't matter.

    Hey you just fixed my compressor. Been tripping breakers on and off for years. My motor is not exactly like yours but uses the same principle with the plastic having to be tight to the motor or the caps dont work right. I think I can rig something up similar to yours. Thanks

    I have a Stanley 2 gallon tank air compressor. I went to use it real quick to air up my tire on my 2015 impala. The impala is a hole other problem. But the air compressor won't turn on when I plug it in. It worked fine not even 48 hours ago. Does anyone have any ideas for me on how to fix it. Cause I can't afford a new compressor.

      Sounds like something sticking in the compressor or the unloader stopped working.

    • @pfun41
      @pfun41  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Theoretically an HVAC style starting circuit or even a hard start should work. But If the mechanicals for the existing starter circuit are intact it's easier to just repair this one than try to convert it.

      Could be a bad start capacitor, burned winding or centrifugal actuator.
