That's amazing, but I have to ask: isn't the phone only 2G capable? And haven't most 2G networks shut down by now?

Surprisingly, GSM service is still available in many parts of the world, even most of North America (USA included). But the phone was connected my private GSM test network.

Most likely yes, as long as you have a data connection, the phone supports J2ME runtime (it does), and there are no carrier restrictions on Java web access.
