I Bought a FILTHY Non-Running Porsche Boxster at Auction! Let's Fix It!

  • I bought a non running 1999 Porsche Boxster for dirt cheap sight unseen at Copart salvage auction. I fixed it in just 20 minutes for FREE in the auction parking lot then proceeded to drive it for the first time.
When I first saw the car, it was in non-running condition and had been sitting for years. But despite its rough exterior and lack of functioning, I saw potential in this vehicle and decided to take a chance on it.
Through some hard work and determination, I was able to fix up the car DIY style and get it running for the first time in years. It wasn't easy, but the satisfaction of breathing life back into this classic Porsche made it all worth it.
In the video, I take you through the process of fixing up the car, from identifying and repairing the issues to getting it back on the road. I also share some of the unique features and details of the 1999 Porsche Boxster, as well as my thoughts on what makes this car a true gem.
Overall, this is a fun and rewarding project that I'm excited to share with all of you. If you're a fan of classic cars or just love a good DIY fixer-upper story, then be sure to check out the video!

Mate, you never connect a jump pack to the + and -. You connect the positive and then, to connect the negative, you connect it to any bare metal on the chassis. OR like u did, remove the terminals. Else the dead battery is just drinking up your current if u connect like u did first.

Here's the deal .... Been there, done that twice ... If you don't drive these for a month or so, the vampire electrical devices in the car WILL drain the battery. If it's not your daily, keep it on a smart charger. Once the battery is dead, you get to where this guy is. You need battery power to open the front trunk but you can't jump the battery since it is in the front trunk. Stalemate. There are maybe three tricks on the internet to try. Jumping the Row 3 Number 3 fuse worked for me once but the next time it didn't. Porsche didn't put the post into the fuse box you thought was missing until 2001 or 2. Some cars have that emergency pull cable, mine didn't. My hood also had a sticky latch so pulling the cable he did in this video wouldn't work. Smart chargers won't charge through the cigar lighter since they need a minimum voltage to work which you don't have. And yes, the lever in the early Boxsters need power even though they seem to be manual. The early year car levers have rods that keep the levers from moving. When you have power, they pull out and you can move the lever. After trying every trick on the internet without success, I borrowed a portable starter battery box with a cable that would plug into the OBD2 port. VOILA !!! Immediately opened. Charged up the battery (slowly) and all was well. But then it failed the smog test. That is what happened to this car I'm sure. Draining the battery gives you an engine code and you will fail the Smog Test. There is a long procedure you can find on the internet to clear the code. You have to drive for 30 or 45 minutes at like 35 mph then the same at 65 mph all without going above I think it is 3000 rpm. If you have a track to do this on great. But I tried all day and there was always cars in my way to slow me down or I would have to speed up so that didn't happen. But just by driving it at all speeds for several hours over two days, it extinguished the code and I passed code. So here's the deal. Keep the car on a smart charger if you don't drive it regularly. Get a portable start battery with a cable that plugs into the OBD2 port for if you screw up. Drive it like hell for a few days before you try to smog it or it will throw a code. And enjoy. These cars are one of the cheap secrets of the fun car world.

I admire your attempt at working on a German car like this but I would at least change the oil before running and fresh gas as well as a few other things. Also washing the car before rubbing the dirt into the body or glass is always smart. That being said I appreciate your passion

Chazz, I know it's sometimes hard to understand him because he talks fast. What he said: advised people not to do what he did, but put their new purchase on a truck/trailer and bring it back to their shop, Also, he said more than once that he couldn't get the rear hatch open so he couldn't check the oil. Couldn't wash the car either because he's in a junkyard. He's also done another video after this one where he does clean up the car, change the fluids and then drives it.

Chain tensioner failure is a problem with many Boxsters and Boxsters and the 996s in the early 2000s had problems with IMS (intermediate shaft) bearing failures and RMS (rear main seal) issues.
As much as I like Boxsters, those things have kept me from buying one. By the way, I would never start a car in that situation without first checking the oil level.

    • @MDQDZINE
      @MDQDZINE ปีที่แล้ว +1

Rear Main Seal and IMS can be taken care of at the same time. For the amount of fun a Boxster is and for how inexpensive they are for a Porsche I wouldnt let those two things stop you. I didn't and love mine. I have a 2004 that I have had for 9 years and it is in awesome shape. Looks like it is maybe 2 years old condition wise. As with any car, you gotta keep up on the little things or you will soon be overwhelmed with issues.

The early 986, 97-99, have a double row IMS and don’t fail like the later single row IMS in the 2000-2005 boxsters. I have a 99 and it’s been nothing but pure joy and a pleasure to own. These cars easily go 200k+ miles with just normal maintenance and they are very easy to maintain. Keep up with oil changes and these cars will just keep going. You really have to drive one to understand but then u will really want one. Pure analog bliss that makes a symphony behind your ears

    • @wildwest5436

Got a 99 myself. I did install a new aftermarket HD IMS when I did the clutch. Since it was a black eye for early Boxsters, I wanted to rest my mind plus it makes for great resale value. Also a must have is to swap out the top with the rear glass.

I just joined your channel and love the car/aircraft content. I'm a retired Air Force aircraft mechanic and also a retired Manheim Auction lot worker. Here's a little tip to try. If you've got a car with a dead battery and you need power to access the trunk, if there's a cigarette lighter plug available somewhere inside, grab a jump box that also has a lighter plug and a cord with two male ends to go from the jump box to the car. This should give enough power to pop the trunk. You're welcome.

I've had my 98 Boxster for a full decade now. Bought it back in March of 2013.
I do pretty much all of my own mechanical work on it.
Had no idea that release cable was up inside the fender liner. Just haven't ever needed it!
It's always gratifying to learn something new.
EDIT: The thing with the hood latches not pulling up is also news to me. I am seriously loving this.
If it helps at all, that tick sounds exactly like mine. If I leave it sitting for a couple weeks or more it will do it for a few moments at startup and then settle down. Been that way the whole time I've had it. I just assume it's what you thought with the oil working its way through after sitting for a while.

@JRGarage, you want to try a tip that may work and save you time, if the Porsche has a cigarette socket, you can buy a "Portable" jump start pack battery, those are cheap i think there one of the Energizer brand, those are not really heavy load but once you connect those to the cigarette socket it will have power, so you can open the hood, then after you can use your regular jump pack. You may want to test that out and will save you some time.

Starting an auction/abandoned car without at least checking the oil first is wild

Check the cooling ventilator when temp sensor is on. Cooling vent and cooling liquid

you should do a video on how to look for auction vehicles. I would love to see how you do it and what exactly do you look for when buying for an auction car or what sites do I search them on,

I had a 1999 Boxster and on 97-1999 the frunk is cable driven. It takes a bit more force to pull it than than electric models.

The ticking sound most likely a sticky hydraulic lifter. Common when they’re left sat for long periods of time. Good old Italian tune up & an oil change should be all good.
On my 2nd 986. Mega cars for the money.

Or it could be piston slap from scoring on the bores…which my 997 had😢…fingers crossed it’s just the lifters.

Check the coolant level, as you might very well be overheating because you are low on coolant. Check the tire pressures too.

Pull the plugs and get a scope down there to have a look.
