I have the same Amarok only mine is manuel.Drives like a dream and no problems, I know a ton of people who trade in there ranger because of gearbox / turbo problems most of them if youre lucky reach 50 000 k's and what does ford do? RELACE the part and give you a 20 000 km warranty ??WTF they dont eaven trust there own product.
This test shows acceleration wich is clearly not the confort zone of the ranger with its long stroke 3.2L pushing 200cv at only 3000rpm and its lazy auto gearbox. However these are 2 very differents vehicles and despite VW high reving 2.0 twin turbo and 8 speed gearbox well performing on acceleration, put 1 ton in the tray and a 3500kgs+ trailer to the amarok and let see how (long) the 2.0 engine live. Ranger 3.2 is a true workhorse with torquey engine at low RPM, able to tow easily and for years...and that's what we ask to them.that's may be one of the reasons why it sells 20 times better than the "beach cruisin" Amarok :) (which is a great pick up too !)
Have a 3.2 BT 50 overheats pulling a caravan at average speed, general build quality is SHIT to say the least!, had an amarok towing at 140+ never had trouble overheating and less effort towing at higher speed. Buying an amarok again ASAP!!
The mazda only has 50000km and it's giving problems,gearbox is very slow and not close to the comfort as newer auto boxes. The engine also totally under performs for a 3.2. A new age 3.0 engine should generate around 180-200 kw if compared to engines of German manufacturers. the build quality of the mazda is cheap plastic finishes, the rear doors of the freestyle cab has to be hit exceptionally hard just to close. The ranger is not a bad bakkie, the wild track looks great, but overall quality is just not up to scratch with the Germans. Do yourself a favour and drive the auto vw and you can decide. It is only n 2liter and performs better but still close to a 3.2 ranger. Our amarok had 130000km it was a manual and the only issue is that the gearbox is notchy and it's just shit overall that is the only complaint that I have....! The amarok towed my caravan at high speeds and feals more stable on the road, in corners. The electronic stability control is smooth and precise. But at the end it is all down to taste but I am just not at all levels happy with the mazda...another thing is I naught my vw for 330000 with 16000km on the clock, it was not a bad price, after 2 years and selling it at 130000km I still got R280000 as a trade in, driving the mazda now for a year paid R370000 for it was offered R240000 for it with around 40000km on the clock.
Dont have gearbox problems, the auto box is just slow and notchy. As with an amarok manual. Only have overheating problems, but it is when towing a bit harsh....but still you dont want such problems on any new car. I drive high performance cars all the time and i have never had a car overheating when driving or playing a bit to hard. It just doesnt happen with new cars. It will flash when you loose grip or when you pull away to fast it is just an indication that it is working and thatvthe vehicle is loosing grip...but ut can be completely turned off by just pressing a button.
Please go do that, I test drove one 2 weeks ago and it was amazingly comfy, it is only a 2 liter and still a bakkie and not a 3.0 so you shouldn't expect it to out perform other bakkie by miles in a performance perspective, but it is overall a very very refined vehicle. Do yourself the favour and just test it. I would love to hear your feedback....
I always drove ls1 motor Utes.. Fast yeah but around work sites useless.. Fell in love with the ranger then a mate brought a v6 twin turbo Nissan d40 it was beating all the Rangers .. My mates d 40 was tuned tho ... Then he come up against another mate in his amarock.. Stock.. Was beating this d40 .. Couldn't believe my eyes.. This vid is accurate.. And I'm buying a rock.. Even tho I agree with what people say they won't last 20 years but I only keep mine for 7 so time will tell I guess
Hilux would loose sorry to say, the 3L diesel is old and outgunned by pretty much everything in it's class, Toyota can afford to get away with it as they rely on brand perception. You only have to drive the two, and the Hilux is notably slower

There are many 4x4 awards handed to the Amarok, it won 4x4 Ute of the year here in Australia TWICE, many reviews have said it was equal to or better then the Ranger, mainly due to its more advanced engine, better handling and better fuel economy. Whilst the D-Max is a good ute, its looks, fuel economy, outdated interior and inferior handling let it down.

Pitty it couldn't make the Voetspore Cape to Cairo trip without catastrophic failure. Even after VW flew in an engineer they couldn't fix it. Had to be brought back to SA on the back of a flatbed??
Where did you hear that? The tech from VW got it fixed and they finished the trip with it. There after they had done two more trips with Amararoks trouble free. Go read up on all the ford problems on the net.
its the 8 speed auto and gear ratio that make the difference thats why the ford got beaten would like to see tug of war to see how strong the amarok is in low range then you will see
I had a amarok and traded it in for a 3.2L xlt ranger . This has to be a joke the ford pulls way better than amarok and when u put weight in the back it doesnt feel like its sliding all over the place like a amarok
So they're drag racing two vehicles that aren't even slightly made to? I was hoping for a descent comparison! To everyone slating the Ranger, it's won against the Amarok in nearly every REAL comparison out there by the big brand critics. As for the 2.0 Diesel out performing the 3.2 Diesel, if you listen the Amarok has an 8 speed box, nice short ratios so quicker on acceleration, the Ranger has a six speed box so by default the gears are longer. I think they're both a massive step ahead of any other Truck available (in the UK anyway) but the Ford is the one to have if you're actually going to use it for purpose.
it matters to some, as people buy these, like myself as an allrounder, and still want to actually overtake when you hit the bitumen. The 8 speed is efficient and smooth and mine does a great job in the bush....even better in the sand.

On the country side of Brazil, Amarok is a joke. We only see Hilux, S10, and now the New Ranger is showing even more. But, volks... sorry, to be credible you should proof that the driver on the ranger was really trying. And, the 4x4 traction on the ranger is heavy duty, you could haul a trailer all day for months to come. On the poor Amarok it would last some hours then explode in a marvelous pyrotechnic show...

So you are left with the rest.. I think the ammorock is on par with the rest that 8 speed real shows what is going to be the future.. I would be happy with ether of these cars in my shed

All this overheating... im glad i have a hilux. Ive even chipped it by sacs its performance is better than any of those two(even though i must admit ive lost recently to a 8 speed amarok also tuned it just takes off faster) i was scared with the chip but im in construction and im always towing generators. Compressors water bowser etc etc. Its never given hassle has 78k on the clock. Bought it in 2012 new.. go see my video of it accelerating.. i must admit with all the torque the clutch seems like it wont last long..
I am of the opinion that the Ford's disappointing performance is MOST LIKELY due to the ALTITUDE at which this test was performed. I know for a fact that the "latest" Ford ECU software DETUNES the engine as a function of barometric pressure to protect the turbo from overspinning and eventually self destructing (warranty). I have seen (with ELM327 BT dongle and Torque app) that at sea level the Ford boosts 1.45bar but from 500m above sea level, it starts to detune itself and when it gets to 1000m above sea level, the turbo will only boost 1.15bar. This reduced boost MUST be accompanied by reduced fuelling in order to keep EGTs within requirements which then translates into reduced engine power. Thus, from 1000m above sea level the engine produces MUCH LESS than 147kW and 470Nm torque. Therefore, I firmly believe that if this same test was to be conducted at sea level, the results MIGHT be different.

You apparently haven't heard that the amarok chassis is by far the strongest in this class if cars. It has multiple reinforcements underneath, making it very stiff and strong. And yet ranger is 500 kg heavier! Go figure!
+s1914 Of course, all utes have leaf springs. Because they are meant to be a workhorse to carry tons of loads. Only leaf springs can handle that for durability reason.
+s1914 I laughed at your comment, this is the big issue with having coils in the back, it then is no longer a real workhorse as it cannot carry as much as leaf. Even with leaf springs, the Amaroks suspension is superior on and off road to the rest.

Was die Ranger in 4x4 high range? The Amarok has permanent 4wheel drives that gives it a big advantage on dirt.
Both cars have the same drivetrain settings. They are rwd in basic setting unless you select 4x4 or 4x4 low range

I am of the opinion that the Ford's disappointing performance is MOST LIKELY due to the ALTITUDE at which this test was performed. I know for a fact that the "latest" Ford ECU software DETUNES the engine as a function of barometric pressure to protect the turbo from overspinning and eventually self destructing (warranty). I have seen (with ELM327 BT dongle and Torque app) that at sea level the Ford boosts 1.45bar but from 500m above sea level, it starts to detune itself and when it gets to 1000m above sea level, the turbo will only boost 1.15bar. This reduced boost MUST be accompanied by reduced fuelling in order to keep EGTs within requirements which then translates into reduced engine power. Thus, from 1000m above sea level the engine produces MUCH LESS than 147kW and 470Nm torque.
Therefore, I firmly believe that if this same test was to be conducted at sea level, the results MIGHT be different.

You apparently haven't heard that the amarok chassis is by far the strongest in this class if cars.
It has multiple reinforcements underneath, making it very stiff and strong.
And yet ranger is 500 kg heavier!

s1914 You can mod your rok yourself if you want different springs. A ute is more than it's rear spring guy. It has optional comfort springs.

+s1914 Of course, all utes have leaf springs. Because they are meant to be a workhorse to carry tons of loads. Only leaf springs can handle that for durability reason.
+s1914 I laughed at your comment, this is the big issue with having coils in the back, it then is no longer a real workhorse as it cannot carry as much as leaf. Even with leaf springs, the Amaroks suspension is superior on and off road to the rest.
