So much better than most reviewers. Asus does need to start sending you their machines. You have explained things that I have never seen anyone do i.e. cutting back power by 15 watts to only lose minimal performance. What a great way to present a machine's potential. Great job. I am waiting for mine to arrive in the mail any day now so I can't wait to see what this thing can do with the rendering program Lumion that I use. Keep the good videos on this little guy coming.

      2. Can I go back to boost default ? Now I don't see option boos in power management 🤷‍♂️ ?

I have gotten the G14 2022 Eclipse Gray version and its very good for its size.
Just like the guy in the video talking about the difference between heat and temperature, the temperature is high on the cpu but it doesn't really feel that hot itself because of its design of having fans blow out the air from the bottom to the back of the laptop and also keeping the wasd keys very cool even if its on 90*C on cpu temp.
I like to game on manual mode with 100% fan speeds on 85*C - 100*C
      75% fan speed on 70*C - 85*C
and so on and so on.
I keep the fan speeds high because I usually wear headphones so I can't even hear the fan noise in my room.

Thanks for continuing to bring out content on this little guy. Loving mine minus the boot and loading times I'm experiencing, even compared to a SN550 I run on my desktop which is in theory a fair bit slower. Have about 400/930GB filled. Is there something I'm overlooking here or would throwing in a SN850 / 980Pro bring that zip I'm missing?

I've also noticed boot times can be a little long... it seems like sometimes it is trying to train the memory before booting... sometimes you just have to wait for 60 seconds at a time for it to finish and then start booting. I have heard that this device has PCIe4... however I'd recommend looking at something like a SK Hynix Gold P31 m.2, as they have shown to be extremely power efficient for laptop battery life while providing great levels of performance as well.

Hey Cbutters thanks for the info man, I really appreciate your perspective. I wanted to ask a few questions pertaining to "temp & heat"., I've been a desktop guy for a long time and just picked this up because I do long stents on the road( haven't had a new laptop in years btw, and this is my first gaming one). I noticed when I ran this out the box just with simple desktop idle my temps via armoury crate flux between 50-66( I know this is a small gaming laptop with a lot of components in at close proximity, but is this industry norm?). When I plug my laptop up I also seemed to see higher numbers. I bought this laptop to be able to play lost ark on the road and so far I've tried to play it twice plugged in and the computer completely reset on me. would you happen to have any advice? are there some settings I can change or an update that might help? or should I swap it out?

Thanks. I really liked the deep dive perspective of testing different power inputs and the results. I havent seen any other YT reviewers approach this way. A lot just talk about design, test lids, sound quality ect. Most dont care about that using gaming laptop. We use headphones anyway while gaming and all it matters is performance while gaming and while just browsing using YT. Battery life and heat is that matters most. Even in ultra thin laptops its important.
I already ordered G14 6700S version today before seeing this video, but i got same info about performance while using battery or usb-c from other YT video test. So kudos for taking time and explaining it. I also have desktop PC with AMD 5800x + 6800XT and i'm really trusting AMD on laptop also. They are so efficient its crazy for the power they need for that.

Great analysis. I had a Sony S13P which was similar to this back in the day. Very powerful in a small package, but high core temps and not that much heat on the system. Over time, I had to downclock it and send it back for repairs because the screen cable got damaged due to long term heat exposure. But I really loved that laptop. I could do my work, and whip out Battlefield 4 or Starcraft 2 during breaks. So I’m looking at this G14 as well!

I'm a truck driver. I just ordered the 6800s model for $1399. I wanted to be able to power it in my truck without as giant brick, & be able to charge it off my 65w car charger the way my wife does with her M1 MacBook Air. I also wanted to not feel like it's a hassle to set up, the way my old Asus 17" is. I had to run it with a cooling pad & exhaust vent even after repasting with liquid metal. Now, with the G14, even my iGPU in the CPU is more powerful than my gigantic 2015 laptop with a useless battery. I'm so happy with this decision so far.

Everyone is focusing on the full performance and everything which is understandable, but I can see a lot of people including myself just want to carry a usbc brick when you out for work or school or a short trip in real life use. And tbh with those performance, this thing would be fine with usbc power in the first place, like dell have those 135w usbc charger, would work perfect for this package.

Most claim and agree that what it does is always use battery then recharges the battery via usb c. and it doesnt get power from the charger directly? Some suggest buy usb c to barrel adapters

Would it play nice with an aftermarket one as I saw they are pricey for the OEM 100w ASUs PSU. Don’t think they would make it detect other PSU and reduce performance Vs thier own but it’s an expensive buy if it’s another PSU at 2-3 times the price from ASUS Vs maybe Anker or others well known brand PD charger makers

Excellent information! Exactly what I wanted to see what would happen if we dial down the TDP a bit.
That balanced 100W seem like a good way to get most of the performance while being thermally acceptable.
Quite fascinating that it is basically able to pull 2021 model's numbers while using 75W CPU / GPU combined.
With this info, keeping that 240W brick 24/7 at home and just lugging around smaller USB-C charger doesn't seem like a bad idea either, since you are getting 86% of performance and it will lighten up the total package (laptop + power brick) quite a bit.
ETA - how is the fan noise at either 100W or 75W? I'm assuming at 75W it would be very compliant?

DO NOT USE THE 100W CHARGER FOR GAMING.
That 100W charger is good for light productivity but for gaming is a terrible idea.
The reason why the 100W charger doesn't even allow Turbo mode is because it is too weak and if you game with it unlike the 240W charger which the laptop will use directly for gaming, the 100W charger is too weak which makes it so that the battery is used for gaming while the charging is charging the battery. This can lead to a loop of charge and discharge which significantly degrades Lithium Ion batteries and worsens its lifespan.
If u want to game, use the 240W charger or go on battery only.

I’ve got some concerns with this laptop. I purchased one early this week and immediately replaced the existing ssd with a 2tb one that came out of my desktop, which this laptop is replacing. After a few blue screens I decided to do a fresh install of windows from a usb installer. After that I went to the G14s drivers and bios page and installed it all. Followed by updating all other drivers. But I was a little disappointed with performance. I do realize that it won’t meet my (now sold) Ryzen 7 5800x, RTX 2070 desktop, but I do notice that the gpu power draw hardly ever goes above 45w and never over 60w. I can’t help but wonder if I did something wrong or maybe I’m just missing a setting. I’ve tried manually changing the cpu power draw in armory crate (which works), but despite limiting cpu to 25w. It’s still only reaching that 45w-60w mark. Doesn’t matter if it’s plugged in with the barrel plug, usb C, or on battery. Any advice?

    • @sergiosaenz3150

An example I can give in gaming performance is that I can’t go above ~130fps in Rainbow Six Siege at 1080p, no matter what the graphics settings are, or the armory crate settings when my desktop reached 340+.

What settings in the laptop do you change to reduce by the 15W? Based on your chart it doesn't look like there is any need to run higher than 100W. Thanks.

Now it's 37°C idle. 40-55°C in Silent mode, 48-60° in Balanced mode. I set fixed CPU and GPU power limits for Silent and Balanced mode. I set CPU temperature limit for Turbo Mode and 80°C limit gives me essentially full performane, but i use 75°C limit, for slighly less fan noise but 90% performance.
I just clean installed windows and installed G-Helper, but there are a few other important things to do.

You actually sacrifice battery's longevity using usb-c as your primary source to charge. I knew this because I have been using g14 2022 as my primary pc in the past year and I switched to usb-c power for a while.
The problem is from Asus. When the laptop is powered by the AC adapter, after the laptop is fully charged, it will stop charging (only trickle charge) the battery and directly power the system.
However if you are charging from usb-c, it will constantly charge your battery and your system will be constantly drawing power from your battery.

Love to see claims backed up by data to sort out true and false. Seems that AMD has produced some excellent mobile silicon and Asus has done an excellent job balancing the performance and efficiency with this years design. Sure the package temps are higher but capabilities justify that. So I was surprised to find actual heat output from the fans was not as extreme as some were making it out to be. Overall very satisfied with my model and love to see some insights into the design.

It's on the biggest sale I've seen so far at best buy. $350 off plus they have open box for about $1,000. First thing I did was put my hand on the top and bottom and it was very very warm perhaps you could call it hot. It didn't seem like anything was running. I checked what tasks were running and some Xbox task was using 10% of the CPU roughly. I killed that task but the laptop didn't seem the cool down. I put my ear up to the laptop and did not hear the fans running at all... but the room was noisy. Also did not feel any hot air coming out of any of the vents and the bottom of the display was not hot at all.... I tried to force the fans on but the armor crate wasn't installed apparently but I didn't have permission to install it so I gave up and went home. I'm a bit confused though because actually I think I was in armor crate at one point but it wouldn't give me permission to go into one menu of settings - but another time it gave me an error message, said armor crate might not be installed correctly. But either way I tried everything but could not get into the fan settings.
I'm leaning towards buying an Apple Mac Air or the next version of the iPad mini since it'll be perfect for my drone. I could buy the 16 GB version (and also 512 GB SSD) Mac Air for about 1500. Not exactly cheap but it would be silent yet very fast...and not burn me...

    • @cbutters
      @cbutters  ปีที่แล้ว +1

An intel engineer did a video recently on the shift in theory on chips and chip performance... The engineers have realized that any time NOT spent at the edge of the max temperature is wasted performance. The chip simply won't hit temperatures that are not safe, and while they may look higher compared to previous generations, there are many safeguards in place to prevent any problems, a whole array of temperature sensors and even skin temperature sensors to protect if the chassis itself is getting too hot. here we are a year later and I don't know of ANY reports of anything out of the ordinary, let alone someone with a melted pile of plastic and heatsinks. Like I say in the video, while the chip may have a higher temperature, temperature doesn't equal total heat output; the high temperature readouts are happening deep inside the silicon underneath the metal and heatsinks, it is literally not a problem.

I ran Aida64 memory benchmarks prior to installing a 32GB SODIMM and after the install and the results were almost identical (slightly faster after installing the 32GB SODIMM, but within margin of error). I then ran the Aida64 memory stress test for 4 hours with zero issues. Finally running CPU-Z and it shows 4 channels (two per memory module) same as it did with 2 x 8GB RAM. So I think it's safe to upgrade to 40GB without any memory performance degradation.

Could you have a look at what you can squeeze out of the new iGPU (680m i believe) with battery power, because I can only find idiotic tests of that. Benchmarkers running at highest settings at highest speeds and then being surprised the battery won't last. One of the largest review channels even went so far as to disable the driver for the 6800s, taking power management down with it and then being disappointed about battery life. Seeing how the Steam Deck can pull 2 - 7 hours of use, the bigger battery on this thing should come close to that, of course not at 1600p without upscaler.
