In those times there were few bands that sounded as good live, Kansas maybe, REO, Rush always sound as good or better than the album live and I am a huge fan of Kiss but they sacrificed a lot of playing and singing well for showmanship in the seventies. I was a huge KISS fan and one reason (besides the music and attitude) is KISS gave countless bands the opportunity to get known without the worry of being upstaged getting in the way (which is very uncommon). Queensryche is a great example. That concert, both bands, were stellar, absolutely stellar. The show I saw also was one of the few that had Mark St. John on stage. Needless to say, I also became a huge Queensryche fan. I hadn't heard anyone as good as Geoff Tate and still haven't. Nor will I. I went to see Rush in Sault, Canada right after they released "Fly By Night." Before the concert, my friends & I were walking around in the basement of the arena killing time when somebody said, "Hey! Here come the guys from Rush." I was wearing my newly purchased "Hotter Than Hell" t-shirt and one of the guys in Rush says, "I wish I had a shirt like that!" I thought, "That's very cool & odd at the same time!" As the years went by, the memory of that night faded and I even wondered if it had even happened. Then I saw that they toured with Kiss for a stretch and the event was affirmed!

    • @brianschocke9642
      @brianschocke9642 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Petty opened one show for them because an opening act backed out. Petty and the Heartbreakers knew it wasn't exactly a good match but decided they'd rock out and give it the best they could because back then KISS fans could be hard on opening acts. The set went well and as expected they opened to an almost empty arena that filled quickly as they played. Late in the set Petty remembers they were playing one of their more rocking songs and crowd started to roar. "We're doing it" Petty thought to himself, "we're actually winning them over" The band started looking at each other and smiling to themselves, they had done it. It was when Petty turned around to look at drummer Stan Lynch he finally realized what was going on. Turns out the KISS techs were making sure their light show was up and running properly. So while the Heartbreakers played KISS was flashing brightly behind them and the crowd was yelling their approval. If memory serves me right this was in South Carolina
