KISS - ABC In Concert 1974 (50th Anniversary franKENstein Redux)

- This video is KISS' first appearance on television. Most copies of this show look pretty rough and sound even worse. Since this was the very first time most people ever saw this new band called "KISS" and since it's the 50th anniversary, I thought I'd have a little fun trying to clean it up.
Video:
I've adjusted the colors and a few other things to take some of the over-saturation and blurriness out of the image and upscaled it to 1080p. I also did a little shot-swapping in a couple places to hide some glitches, to break up the choruses a bit and mostly to include the "missing" 2nd half of the first verse of "Nothin' To Lose". I did some "creative" editing to fill in the video from that section. I also made the transitions a little smoother between songs, extending the "Black Diamond" intro a bit to make it less abrupt and to give the whole video a "mini concert" appearance. I'm not sure if the songs were original aired back-to-back or as separate segments, but the edits between them is very abrupt. I also extended the intro of "Nothin' To Lose" since it was all but buried under the audience on the original.
Audio:
Drums were all re-created using Peter's original isolated kit. I then blended polyphonic samples I made from his drums to replace everything exactly as he played it. The cymbals were enhanced with actual Peter crash samples. Same for the cowbell. The toms were blended hit-for-hit with samples created from his Alive! toms.
Bass is 100% from the show with just a tiny bit of "dirt" added to the high end.
Since this was a mono recording and I wanted to create a true-stereo mix, I used the original guitar for Ace since he was louder in the mix throughout. His parts are 100% from the actual show.
Paul's guitar parts for the intro of "Firehouse and "Black Diamond" (and a few other spots) come from the show. In order to create a stereo mix, his other rhythm parts come from Alive!, mixed to match the show's guitar tone and edited to match exactly what he plays here.
Vocals are 100% from the original live recording, aside from the "missing" verse in "Nothin' to Lose" which I pulled from Alive! and matched to the sound of the rest of the show. Other than that, I blended some high frequencies from the Alive! tracks just to fix a bit of sibilance.
Like I always say, my videos are NOT for the purists. It is a fan's attempt to make these classic videos hopefully look and especially sound better for a more enjoyable experience. All care was taken to preserve as much of the nuance from the actual performance as possible. Others have done a good job cleaning up the original audio on various versions which are available if that's more your thing, but you've never heard the show like this before. It was a bit of a rush job since after starting it a few days ago, I realized the 50th anniversary was coming up and wanted to try and post it on that date.
KISS fans Enjoy!
You know who needs to watch this? Gene,Paul,Peter and Ace.
Absolutely
Good one!!!
Good luck on that...
Yes
I know who would need to watch this? All Kiss critics, at the first two TV performances with an audience, they get a standing ovation. I haven't seen a single other band get it. Music critics are quasi-intellectual morons.
This. Totally.
I was a kid back then, and watching this takes me back to the fun and freedom of the 70’s. Lots of good music, movies, comic books, cartoons, toys, and other stuff that made childhood awesome.
100%. We were very lucky
Yep fun and magical times for me in 1974 at the tender age of 11 , I was grounded quite frequently by my parents that year for being a shit 🤣🤣🤣 I discovered Kiss the very next year and purchased Destroyer in 1976, I still have the album 🤘🤘🤘
Me too! & then came. . . . . . . . . . . . The 80's! But the 70's? Definitely a very cool time.
You hit the nail on the head there Kurt. 70's were the best.
I Remember too Buddy!!! I Picked up my Dad’s Gibson 135 semi hollow body sunburst, in 1974 and started playing, 50 years later, I have my own studio, I’ve produced over 500 songs, I have worked with many bands and many musicians and I’m still going! 😊
And there we get to see how important Peter and Ace were truly to their rise and early fame
Too bad they both squandered their opportunities.
Didn't even look like Paul was playing. Holding a fucking guitar makes you a rock star I guess.
@@drk321 he was shredding rhythm licks bro.
@@drk321- i so wish there were fewer unsmart people in the world
Absofuckinglutely!!!!!
" Most copies of this show look pretty rough and sound even worse. Since this was the very first time most people ever saw this new band called "KISS" and since it's the 50th anniversary, I thought I'd have a little fun trying to clean it up."
GREAT JOB!
It sounds pretty good to me
Amazing. Paul Stanley said it best, “we were ferocious at this time.”
Before it got all bloated and corporate driven. They were just a hard rock band here. None of the outside bullshit...Success has killed alot of bands' music and performance through the years.
Back when Paul and Gene wanted it. Going to a Kiss concert in the late 70’s was an event. You waited for hours in line to get tickets, usually partied in the parking lot beforehand and the concerts lived up to the hype. The next week you were still talking about it.
... And you only paid $20.00 for a ticket!
@@Rick-O-Shay60 : ...Actually, more like Under $10.00!!!...
KISS were never the same without Peter or Ace
Ace and Peter were never the same without KISS
Scab fan obviously @@jefferysteen1041
For the 100 billionth time get over it.
Know what I did...I quit listening after dynasty. Lame shit since the 70s
@fretboy90 so why say anything 40 years later, that's clinical insanity.
These guys were amazing back in the day, that’s why Kiss Alive is one of the great live albums of all time. So glad I’m seeing this footage for the first time!
Great album but it was doctored up..not really live
Best album ever! Kiss Alive was just perfection for the band. Caught them for the Kiss Alive - Concert it just blew me away wanting more.
@@michaelmaravigli3871 yeah all or most live albums “doctored” to some degree…. But I choose to look the other way 😂
@@michaelmaravigli3871
Just about all live albums were "doctored up" in some shape or form. Nobody wants to put out bad music, and nobody wants to hear bad music. So,,, fix the bad spot.
I'm just saying the same as everyone else, that live album lit up a fire under everyone's ass!
They played very well here, had all their parts well rehearsed, had their stage moves rehearsed, and never missed a beat/note while singing. Peter did exceptionally well singing! I didn't know he could sing like that. Lots of harmonies here in this version of the band. People forget that - I did. This version of KISS is very good.
Seriously sounding good!
“This version”?
This is the one and only KISS.
All others are just cover bands
I was in high school, and I remember seeing this ! The next day at school, ALL my musician friends were RAVING about them. I had the pleasure of seeing KISS live in Chicago for the Destroyer tour, 22nd row main floor. My ears rang for 3 days. I’ll never forget it. Early KISS was the best KISS !
Saw them at Chicago Stadium in January, 1978. Opening act was Rockets, former members of Mitch Ryder's Detroit Wheels.
@@dalethelander3781I was there, too! 20th row!
@@johnvrabec9747 My date and I were up on the mezzenine level. No one had to spark anything up, all we had to do was lean over the railing and breathe deep. Second-hand high. 😆
@@rogeeeferrari Just as good, if not better, than the big hair bands that were to follow. And I love big hair metal. 3 chords, no waiting.
@@rogeeeferrarigoooooooooffffffff,
1974 , When Rainbows were still RAINBOWS!!!
and KISS was KISS
Amen!
Fuggem.. let’s take back the rainbow those idiots took from us.
I got that
My thoughts exactly! wtf happened??☹🤡🌎, that's what!!
uh oh, watch out. another critical thinker offended by symbology.
Back when Midnight Special was worth staying up for.
@SamuelMorado:
... except, this video of KISS is from the episode of ABC's "In Concert" TV-series, that aired on March 28, 1974 - _NOT The Midnight Special._ Didn't you see the illuminated "In Concert" sign in the background during the video ?
Anytime these old TV performances are cleaned up and presented again, it's a good thing. Excellent tech on this one - even with earbuds...
When you have hungry musicians, it's amazing how good the performances are.
True. Young, hungry musicians give us their best. Early Zeppelin comes to mind.
Saw this in '74. Saw them live in Milwaukee in 1976. Affects me to this day.
I remember watching this live on tv.I can still remember my Father wanting to change the channel.Calling it the devil,s music.I was 12 and begged him not to change it.He stormed off angry, but we didn,t care.I was instantly hooked.I loved the early 70's Kiss because they weren,t mainstream quite yet. They were dark and cool. KISS FAN FOR LIFE.
Considering the subject matter of the first song,...lol!
If you want the devils music there is this rap and hip hop bullshit that encourages violence. This Kiss is creativity at its best and for years they are underrated. Way too many sold out concerts over the years to mention. I do not think they are in the Rock and Roll hall of shame, oops I meant fame, after some of the trash that has been voted in and snubbed the bands that need in it
Devils music……this is the Osmond Brothers compared to what’s out there now….
My first concert was KISS and Cheap Trick at the L A Forum on August 24, 1977. The tickets were $8 each!
Now it takes a whole paycheck to see... Well.... Anybody.
Same here but in Spokane, WA on August 11, 1977. I remember them being $7.50. I was 11 years old and that concert was everything to me at the time. Cheers!
I was 11 yrs. old and had to have a KISS lunchbox. 🤣 It'd be worth some money today. 🍻 To better times ✌️❤️🎵🎶
Yep. I bought a KISS AM radio around that same age in the 70's. I recently sold it for over $400 on ebay. Some of the old original issue stuff is highly collectable. Cheers!
@@edwardwilliams8238 If you ever collect one again get the thermos too. Very important
Paul was 22 years old here. Thanks for posting this gem.
I start to listen their music in 1999 when I was 4, now I'm 28 👴🏼
I think Gene was 24 or 25
Holy crap! This is so good of a mix! I can hear everything!
Does it get any better??? The youth, the energy, the drive, how on point they sounded when they were hungry! Listen to how perfect Ace was on every fucking solo!!! Gives me goose bumps!!!
That's what I say. He could have done even more in his solos, but Paul and Gene didn't want to much attention being paid to Ace, or Peter.😢😅❤
They also couldn't match him got technical playing, either. There's demo recording before the first album that grey did themselves and you xsn hear Ace playing a number of progressions, not just pentatonic.
Haven't seen this for ages. Wow 50 years time speeds 😎😍
Sure the f does!!! Ugggh
KISS is the reason why I started playing music back in the 70s...most specifically, Ace is the reason
Me too. My brother came back from a Buzzcocks concert in Oxford with alive 1 and 2.
They were at the top of their game👍
Exchanging vocal leads, Criss absolutely killing it in "Black Diamond" - this is the early KISS that I remember from childhood & high school. Thanks for a great posting !!
It annoys and confuses me how these early TV performances are so unbelievably good yet no one was rushing out to buy their records.
That's because you have to put it in a historical context. It was a completely different world back then. Only late night FM radio probably would have played them on the air in the old days
well they did by 1975 the next year, so that isn't bad.
Kiss was always known for a hell of a live show but their record sales were not great sellers
Because most of us were poor teens, seems like yesterday.
They were new and kinda strange. Things rarely were “viral” back in the day. Kiss didn’t have a hit on the radio. Album oriented stations were just starting up and Albums were expensive too. They had to play a lot of live shows to make an impact.
I discovered Kiss at the age of 7 while flipping through my uncle's Circus magazine. One look at their pictures and they became my favorite band before I even heard their music! That moment stuck with me.
7 years old...i waited up for this and fell asleep...woke up right as it ended...the best band in the world...
My God I remember seeing this when I was just 7 yrs old and just being mesmerized!! What a innocent and just glorious time!! And also a band that wasn't afraid to actually play LIVE on television!!! I remember that KISS were GODS in those days!!! If u were lucky enough to grow up in those days u know what I mean when I say it was just MAGIC!!!!
Amazing drums on Firehouse and Black Diamond Peter! It's really swings mate!
I was 14 years old in 1974. And when I first heard these guys they knocked my socks off!!!!
This is great. Gene and Ace's mock 'flirting' made me laugh out loud! So great to see them looking young, rough and ready and, best of all, really enjoying being together and sharing their music. There's a palpable sense of unity and brotherhood. A world away from the bitter, hardened old men they became. Lovely stuff. Thanks for uploading!
Ace isn't bitter or hardened at all, in my opinion.
@@christopherlees1134 Yeah, to be fair he seems the most chill out of the four. Paul and Gene make up for that with being extra bitter, hardened and cynical. Ace is my fave tbh.
well said. This was a magical time in their way to the top. can only guess Dick Clark was stunned by this performance.
Best Quality of this I've ever seen 🤘
It’s on one of the KISS DVD collections vol I
I sat in the living floor and watched this! What memories!!
This sounds really good. I was 1 in 1974 and didn’t get to see KISS for the first time until the “Asylum” tour in ‘85.
I was 6. Too scary lol. Dug it a few years later.
Saw them open for Sabbath in Baltimore
I saw this on TV, and saw in the newspaper the next day that they 2re coming to Chicago at the Aragon " Brawl Room" I believe in the summer I got tickets right away. It was Hydra, UFO, T-Rex ( one of his last shows ever) and Kiss!
One of the best places to see a show in Chicago! That must of been an amazing show. The Aragon Ballroom should be a historic landmark.
Original Kiss was so good. After Midnight Special we ran out and stole the first album. Don't worry... We bought everyone album after, posters, and multiple Kiss concerts right up to the Love Gun Tour. Oh and turned half of Green Bay Wisconsin into Kiss fans from playing it nonstop at our big parties. 😁
They were so great ! Ace and Paul were riff masters. That is the real KISS !
good job on clearing it up. because i was 4 years old back then and abc wasn't the clearest channel every broadcast. so i give you respect. two thumbs up! i never seen this either.
I remember watching this with my mom as a kid. I was an instant Kiss fan for life.
It's hard to believe that I had just turned 3 yrs old when this took place. And here I am 50 yrs later still listening to KISS!! Love'em!!!
I remember watching this. Loved it, they were so powerful. I love the candelabra, so cool. Some years later, we started a garage band Kiss songs were what we learned first. Saw them at the old Chicago Stadium in January 1978, what a show! 20th row main floor middle. Confetti fell on us and when the flames erupted, you could feel the heat!
Thanks!! I was a freaky lil 8 year old NW Indiana Kiss Army brat-this really brings back great memories!!!!
Man.. Peter really drove this show.. fuckin goosebumps. Hearing Paul say he wasn't a powerful drummer in his book. cmon, look at this.. he's 100% leading the concert AND singing too. His voice gave them that classic rock sound Paul was desperately after in the 70's.
Good job with the audio clean up. I don’t remember it sounding this good on my little black and white television in my room in 1974.😂
You redid a lot of things to clean up the original audio and video, but if i hadn't read the description I would never have known because it was so perfect. Congratulations on providing us with this show!
Thanks!
This is my childhood!!! I was obsessed! First concert & everything but it was 1988 no makeup. Still awesome! So crazy how Gene can transform himself. He’s an old man now, but still kicking it!!!!
Utmost love and respect for the stellar job you did on this - this is an absolute joy to watch and listen to loudly! THANK YOU!
great job on this mini concert. thank you. even if you arent a KISS fan, this is great history in rock.
EXCELLENT job on this great performance!! Thank you so much for your great work and for posting this!
Peter had an awesome set of lungs !
my first concert, kiss with rush opening 1976ish..... memories return ten fold.....
Thanks for posting this. Let's me go back to when I was young and rocked out in the rock room, man just to go back for just a little while.
Peter’s rhythm especially groovin here. And Ace guitar sounded thick. All around tight.
I was only less than a year old, but just in a few years, I would become a total KISS fanatic! This’ pure joy to see this.
Lots of practice time for these shows, back when they were bad ass, I was 15 and loved these guys 🤘
I was just 11 yrs old when I saw this, my dad looked at me like I was nuts for watching and liking KISS.. Although in 77 he surprised me and my brother with tix to see them at MSG, I think he was an undercover Kiss fan.. He took us again in 79' he came out of the show singing Dr.Love.. it was then I knew that Dad was Definitely a KISS fan.. He was a Good Man..
Aww, you lucky dog! Loved Dr. Love! ❤️
Ace - “No, I’m actually a plumber,” 😂
Oh yeah, I've got a pipe for you to clean out.
🤣
Just perfect! Thanks so much for uploading this masterpiece! Cheers from Acapulco.
...mate I love what franKENstein dose with the mix of sound on KISS songs..great stuff mate..this sounds shit hot man🤘
They were soooooooooo good live back then. I well remember them in the mid/late 70s
Amazing work, I'm amazed how much better it looks and sounds.
Pete has gone on record to say this is a pearl marching snare drum…and jeez can u imagine how pissed the headliners were with this stunning volume in their performance…this incredible improved audio proves that even in 1974 they were decibel busters! And in addition this is the 1st time I have ever seen the uncut first verse of Nothin’ to Lose! A gem! Thanks for posting!
I remember staying up to watch this..I was. 11 yrs old.🤘
This very well might be the first thing I ever saw of KISS. I was only 4 but all of my early years until 9 were filled with the music and memorabilia of this band. It is an amazing thing you have done with this vid. Thans for posting it. 💀🎧
Great job fixing it up. It looks and sounds awesome!
My first 8 trac @ 8 yrs old…. Obsessed in the KISS ARMY… they piss me off these days but it sure brings back awesome memories
Wow you did an Amazing job.👏👏👍👍
Wow. That’s the best KISS footage I’ve ever seen. In their PRIME!!!
Wow 1974 !!? Its been that long ago im 65 now
I've had a meh VHS of this since 1985-ish and haven't looked at it in over 20 years I imagine. However this looks just fabulous, like I'd never seen it before! Great job.
I have always loved this video and noticed the silver outline of Paul Star on his eye very cool.
Holy Smokes! What a labor of love to put this together. Hail! and Well Done! Thanks for taking the time and sharing!!!!
I was born in 73. Kiss was my first concert. 1987 Crazy Nights tour. Ted Nugent opened for them.
My first concert also. Ted played a little better 😊😊😊😊
Man GREAT job!! All Kiss fans will appreciate this! 😎
Don't tell me that Gene Simmons did not enjoy Ace Frehley's company, cuz I see them singing Nothin' to Lose, and Ace blows Gene a kiss in between words, and Gene licks the air in response. They were having fun. You don't do that shit with someone you don't like!
As soon as the live album came out then that’s what put them over the top for sure.
Such a great remaster, sounds incredible! Nothing To Lose rocks with swagger! Thanks for the upload! 💚🤘👍
Makes me remember why I immediately got hooked on them. They had everything! So tight!
Looks like they're having an awful lot of fun. Must have been a great time to be in that band from 74-78.
Saw the alive 2 tour I had listened to all their albums for years and years loved them as a teenager in Jr. High this lineup was by far the best what happened only all 4 of them truly know !! So many great early songs with Peter and Ace being right in the middle of them !!
A shame the songs didn't sound this heavy and raw on the LPs.
Thank you very much for your efforts. The fans do appreciate it.
Thank you too!
The work you're doing is exactly what I'm looking for thanks so much for doing things like this I'm enjoying it immensely. Something I've always wanted to see.
Damn fine job!
Yea, agree with the other comments on here… this sounds remarkably good! I love KISS!
Thanks for that flash back, I remember this I was 9
The Cat & Spaceman have always been the heart & soul of this band!!
This Was 1 Year Before I Was Born... *I Was Born In 1975*
Love seeing this. Your work on the video is incredible. Great stuff!
Awesome Footage....The Energy They All Had Was Off The Charts!!!
Man...the mix on this is just plain magnificent.
This is simply amazing.!! Thank You for all your hard work.! You Rock.!!
I absolutely love seeing early performances of KISS. The most peculiar things are, that rainbow spanning the stage and the polite applause at the end of each song
have Loved these guys since I was a kid, still do, always will!
Now that was awesome!
I was 8 in ‘74. Started listening to them two years later. This is a wonderful recording!
You wanted the Best band you've got em, the hottest band in the land, KISS ! I was going to be 8yrs old when I saw this and instantly I was a fan.. for many years to come. the 'Elder' was it for my liking tho. too bad they couldn't keep that special magic together longer. Peter and Ace finally leaving was it for me.
Great job you did here fantastic !!! Thank you for your dedication the results are amazing compared to the original 100 percent improvement in audio and video your hard work is appreciated by all Kiss thanks Thanks again, Sir!
I remember this night.
Their look pulled you in,
It was their sound that blew me away!
