Higher resolution by itself doesn't mean shit in VR. "Hardcore" VR experiences are impossible without 6DOF tracking and room scale. Nintendo would have to make an entirely new Oculus Quest like console to reach that market.
There's actually already an unused gyro and some other sensors inside of the current Switch to back up your "they planned this ahead of time" thing further lol
Since the dawn of humanity that have been a question that terrorizes every mind, can I stick a bird to my face? Now, we have an answer. Oh, we have one.
I feel like Labo is basically the unofficial Nintendo Tech Demo, to show developers what's possible and to push the boundaries on what is possible. And also experiment and figure out what sorts of things the next console would be cool to have.
The biggest problem with this is definitely the 720p resolution of the switch. With it on you'll definitely always see jaggies on the edge of models no matter how high the anti aliasing is. It's already a problem when playing the switch in handheld, just imagine it magnified in front of your face. This was an obvious idea they were going to do (they took the patent out for it when the switch came out.) It just has too many problems due to the hardware. I just can't see the Switch becoming a system popular for VR.
This isn't designed to be a "Popular" VR thing. If they were going for that they would have called it "Nintendo VR" or something, it's a labo project, like the Piano, or Robot Kit. It ain't fighting the Vive or a Mobile VR, it's like a fancy 3d viewer toy

3:52 Keep in mind that the VR kit was planned at least back towards the creation of Nintendo Labo. I definitely remember seeing the Camera and Bird in the Labo Reveal trailer way way back. This 4th Variety Kit is still part of the "First Wave" of Nintendo Labo, despite it releasing quite a while after Variety Kit #1. Nintendo hasn't shown us they want to continue any further with Labo than they at the very least had shown back in early 2018. That being said, I agree in that I don't think Nintendo has given up on Labo yet. For them to release this 4th Kit at least shows that they are fulfilling the promises of what they showed Labo would become back in 2018.
This sort of vr will be useless for long plays... too low res and too low frame rate. Fine for short labo mini game things.. but not for a full on game. .. not to mention, that the game would need rendering twice, so that’d nuke frame rate on something like Metroid
There won't be any big games with VR because it is the Switch. It doesn't have enough power, it doesn't have a high enough resolution and it doesn't have a high enough frame rate. So stop begging for games like meteoid prime they are impossible
You totally nailed it Arlo. If we see true VR it won't be until the switch 2, this whole labo kit is just for kids to play with. But I'll be honest watching the wind getting taken out of the sails of people expecting to get some high-end headset or other ridiculous things somehow related to the switch and VR is very amusing me. This is without a doubt exactly what I expected when I heard VR and the switch. The picture in my head matches this ridiculous VR labo kit almost exactly.

Smash Ultimate needs Labo support. Another thing, here are my four characters I want in Smash Ultimate, they are Paper Mario, The Nintendo Wii, King Boo, and Master Hand.
I am just happy that Labo sold well enough for them to create a new one. This is great because I love the creativity behind it. And Nintendo never expected it to sell really well. They just love to create new things. They are the only gaming company that only cares about and loves to make games above all else. Of course they expect to make a profit, but sometimes I am sure they dont mind lower profits if it is something they love to do. And Labo doesnt take sales away from any other project, so no reason to stop as long as it is making even a little profit.
If you go back to the original Nintendo Labo trailer, these new VR things appeared in there, but they were careful to not reveal that it was VR. I think this was part of their plan for Labo from the beginning and they didn't want to jump hard into the VR side of it until they had a feel for what Labo would do. Thoughts?
@@connor4435 game theory had a video "Nintendo's secret plan for the switch" or something like that back right after the switch launched. He discussed the switch's tech and predicted that the IR sensor would be used for AR(partially true in labo), and also predicted that the switch itself would one day become a VR screen. Effectively his prediction was that Nintendo would try to make the switch into the ultimate console: something that was home console, a handheld console, a vr headset, and run AR games
The fact, that the Nintendo switch has been designed to be useable as a VR headset has been leaked months ago and I'm pretty sure Arlo mentioned it at least once in the past. It wasn't really a leak, as someone just found the patent on it under one of Nintendo's alias companies. Later Regi revealed in an interview that Nintendo was working on turning the switch into a VR headset. No surprise here, I just expected it a little later, maybe for summer, that would have made more sense then now...
I’m betting that there are a lot of Nintendo fans here who haven’t yet experienced VR. I used to be very sceptical of VR. Then my brother bought PSVR on a whim, and I can’t lie-I was blown away. You have no idea how great VR is until you try it. Resident Evil 7 and AstroBot are major evolutions in gaming immersion, and I urge you all to try them. I can’t wait to see Nintendo get behind VR with their major franchises. It is without a doubt the future of gaming.
Andrew Wood I was fairly unimpressed by Play Station’s VR, the novelty wore off and it just look to ugly to be immersive. Perhaps a higher resolution VR head set would wow me more.
J2Dragon Have you tried Resi 7 and Astrobot? I agree that better resolution would improve the experience, but the experience of VR is, nonetheless, fantastic. I wasn’t impressed with Skyrim, however. Graphically too blurry to be immersive.
Labo it's great, literally a containment laboratory where they can experiment with fresh concepts and technologies, INSTEAD of ruining an entire console by triying to force an inconvenient gimmick to people (Virtualboy, half 3ds,wii,wiiu). So yeah, we can have our games with normal controls but great playabilities while labo just make mad weird shit in his corner.
All I ever wanted from way back from when the first Labo kits released was to play Metroid Prime 4 with a Labo VR type headset and a Labo arm cannon that uses the gyro in the Joycons to aim around...were on our way ladies and gentlemen the future has arrived
Careless Gamers TV I would imagine that the switch pro will still be a tablet, so no puking is still going to happen. The switch pro might be more powerful, but you need something a little more sophisticated to make vr more than just a gimmick for the switch.

I love labo so much. It's so fun building all of these cardboard creations. But I feel that the cardboard games are more of the journey than the destination, so I hope these ones have more 'game'.
Notice the pictures by each of the variations, for example the elephant has a pencil ensuing that it's for drawing and the camera has marine wildlife and the normal vr has planets on it
@@Ozzianman if it happens, I believe it will happen in the next iteration of Switch which I think is possible because of how far out we are from MP4 coming out
What they really need to do with the labo vr is combining it with the robot kit, that would be an awesome game! (yeah, it would need a headband though)
Here are what seem to be the "minigames" based of what little you can see: Blaster (the longer camera thing); A shooting minigame, probably against buildings or something. Camera; Taking pictues of the virtual wildlife, probably similar to the fishing minigame. VR; Apperantly exploring space, but could also offer multiple minigames as it is part of the base set, and there are images of it with and without joycons attatched. Bird; Freestyle flying, from the perspective of a bird. Elephant; Some sort of 3d drawing thing, where the end of the "trunk" is a pen.
Oh my! This is IT! Links Awakening will have a compatibility mode for Labo VR! The odd lower resolution voxel look and directional focus blur all makes sense now. We will have to wait a little while and see, but the gameboy port is unlikely to be too demanding on the memory and system not to render it twice for VR. Edit: other rythem games had compatibility with the Labo Piano. So this is not too far fetched that Labo VR could be used in several games.
It's worth pointing out: ALL of the Toy-Con packs 01 to 04 were in the announcement trailer. The only Toy-Con that didn't appear in that trailer was the headset itself, but everything else did. I also don't see any unreleased Toy-Con in that trailer, so this might be it if the sales don't go anywhere. - Piano (01VK) - House (01VK) - RC Car (01VK) - Motorbike (01VK) - Fishing Rod (01VK) - Accelerator Pedal (03DK) - Labo Man (01VK/02RK/03DK/04VR) - Robot (02RK) - Bird (04VR) - Steering Wheel (03DK) - Camera (04VR) - Blaster (04VR) - Submarine (03DK) - Wind Pedal (04VR) - Flight Stick (03DK) - Elephant (04VR) (In rough chronological order in the trailer, except elephant because I couldn't identify it at first in the trailer.)
i also have Kit 01, and i must say that the building part is so much fun but it is like eating a restaurant meal, ones it finished, you can't do it again without buying it again
Resplution won't have anything to do with motion sickness. Motion sickness is just your body's response to seeing different movements to what you're feeling, so starting with games like Skyrim where you're walking around first thing getting into VR will usually make you sick, especially if you're predisposed to it. You can ease motion sickness by blowing fans on you while you play, playing standing up and a few other things you can research yourself, and I suggest starting off playing things that only have your own body movement as controls, like Superhot and Beat Saber (which incidentally are the 2 best VR games ever imo) and then try some cockpit style/driving games (the cockpit/windscreen acts as a sort of anchor point for your brain to latch on to, helping it deal with sickness) before doing skyrim, so your brain learns to deal with it. I luckily don't get sick so I was able to VR all day every day no problem, but I still started off cautious and put off skyrim till a few days in. Don't worry if you do get sick, you can learn to overcome it and games are way better now at not causeing sickness.
You're right about resolution, it mainly effects the immersion. Tracking however, either if it's just inaccurate or has a high latency, can often cause motion sickness.
3:03 "apparently fulfils the dream that may have had to have a bird on their face. I know I've been waiting for this moment" Are we all gonna pretend he didn't just say this? hahahahah.
I love all the Labo stuff and want it to work on together with my kid, but he's still a couple of years too young. I'm so happy they're still working on it properly, I think Labo has a much longer shelf life than other Nintendo games, and I hope they keep producing it at least until the switch is dead. I can totally see buying Labo stuff at near full price right at the end of the switch's life.
I got the variety Labo kit right before staying with my Mom while she had surgery for breast cancer. It was a wonderful distraction leading up to and then after her surgery. I would have been pretty messy without that distraction. She thought it was cool, too. I guess I've got weird, highly circumstantial feelings about Labo. Seeing this makes me want to mess with the kits again. But they're all piled up high on a shelf way out of my arm's reach. Storing full size toys is hard, haha.
All (or most) of these VR kits were shown off in the ORIGINAL Labo trailer, but they didn't hint at them being VR. On the wide shot of a ton of people using Labo, you can see the blaster, the elephant, and others. They also show the Blaster, Bird, Wind Pedal, and Camera up close. This isn't a new development, they've been working on this as long as they've been working on Labo.
Looking more at the box, I noticed there are no straps to keep them on your head, and the kids in all the pictures are holding it up to their faces. Does that mean no motion controls?
@Wolfgalaxy Nah. I'm a proud (or not so proud) owner of both a Nintendo Switch and an HTC Vive. The Switch is considerably lighter, and I can play my Vive for hours and hours. Okay, i WOULD be playing it right now if I wasn't waiting to ship it off to HTC for a $300 repair and crying into an empty wallet, but still. It would've worked perfectly well if they had used one joycon for the headset tracking and one joycon as a hand controller, similar to how the Oculus Go has one hand control. Would've opened up so many options for cool games, and if devs use it for their own VR experiences, it could have propelled Labo sales to insane levels. Stuff like this is why I have such a love-hate relationship with Nintendo. I have a buddy who is a diehard fanatic for Nintendo who gets pissed off at me on a personal level for saying stuff like this and I don't expect Arlo's comment section to be too too much different, but every time Nintendo does something, it always ends up going something like this: 1. They come up with a great idea 2. They come up with an innovative concept for said idea 3. They find a way to screw it up on a fundamental level where it could have been so great Arms, the Switch in general to a slightly lesser extent, Labo, Labo VR, Wii U, etc. they have been doing this a lot lately. I love the idea behind their stuff, and I always seem to end up buying it, but I can't stand how they manage to mess up their execution so consistently.
I fear that this huts VR's image. But please *HEAR ME OUT!* before disagreeing with me...then feel free to disagree with me. There are two types of VR today, cheap VR and Expensive VR, with some middle ground here and there. For example, the oculus rift and HTC vive are $400 at least and therefore expensive VR, but offer an incredible experience, something that you just can't put into words (I have a vive). Alternatively, there is cheap VR such as google cardboard and Nintendo cardboar-I mean Labo. Cheap VR is nowhere near as immersive, there is no hand or head tracking and the graphics are not great because its a mobile chip trying to convince your brain you are somewhere else (The Switch will be better I know, but still). I think many people hear about this whole VR thing and like the Idea, so they purchase a $15 google cardboard kit from google or something like that, It's cool for a bit, maybe even a few hours, but eventually will sit collecting dust because there are better experiences on a flatscreen. Labo may be a kid's first experience with VR, and their first impression will be something along the lines of: "this is cool, but can I play breath of the wild again?" Now on to a topic that is only slightly related but still important: VR is kind of in Purgatory, since 2016 not much has changed, the rift and vive are still the best experiences, the cardboard is the cheapest, and Gear VR is a pimped up cardboard. I fear even the Quest with its $400 standalone price may not be enough to save VR. So I urge you, if you want to see VR grow, *talk about it*. I get that headsets are expensive, so i understand if you don't want to make the jump yet, but please try to keep the conversation alive, to keep VR alive. If we do maybe VR will develop to be better, cheaper, and more accessible than ever.
But I believe a lot of people know that the more expensive VR headsets are vastly better. I mean, the cheap ones are literally cardboard, they wouldn’t expect much from that. Also how would you rate PSVR? I tried it but it look to ugly to be really that good. (Also the controller was awful.) Also the switch would have head tracking.
@@cledgefenrir5681 In other words, a glorified tech demo sold at a premium price to entice early adopters into being their guinea pigs while they work out the kinks. Textbook R&D strategy. Seen it a million times.
You know at the end of the original Nintendo Labo video the Blaster toy con is in the last shot where there are lot of people in a line using Labo. The bird one and the vehicle kit are there too. All of these kits were clearly planned/made in advance. Also Labo has sold over a million so far. 1,2 Switch has sold nearly 3 million, which is better than any single Pikmin game.

I feel like Labo is basically the unofficial Nintendo Tech Demo, to show developers what's possible and to push the boundaries on what is possible.
And also experiment and figure out what sorts of things the next console would be cool to have.
In other words, it's this console generation's WarioWare.
@@SNMG7664 you're right, but I just felt it had to be said with all the speculation going around right now.
@@bobsnob3073 I don't think resolution is going to be the big issue, you can get over that. The big problem is going to be the tracking. It is horrible to walk forward and not move forward.
@@ashtree129 The resolution on such a reletively "large" screen so close to your face parted with the extremely low refresh rate of it willl make people sick if there's even anything fast paced or interactive. The higher end headsets are all at 90hz for a reason, anything below 80fps will make most people sick and the very low resolution with cause a screen door effect that will only make it worse.
If they were to make a more mainstream Nintendo vr and not label it Labo, then it’d be better if it were a switch pro exclusive
Arlo, your videos always seem to come out right on time. Anytime there's Nintendo news I can't wait to hear what you have to say. Your excitement for this stuff is always infectious. Keep being awesome dude!

Nah mate, I think it might be VR compatible but if it is then it will allow you to use the canon as an arm blaster
It's also gonna suck total ass, and in very confident it will be the worst vr out to date

Let’s see if any of you get THIS reference.
“Jona, when I die, I want to become a bird. What about you Jona?”
Who’s ready to get hit with a blue shell in VR?
Smashin in vr

Unlikely this will be compatible with games outside of what's included in Labo.
Atsuko Kagari apparently they will be adding support for a few select games outside of Labo.

Don't forget struck by lightning.
If you go back to the original Nintendo Labo trailer, these new VR things appeared in there, but they were careful to not reveal that it was VR. I think this was part of their plan for Labo from the beginning and they didn't want to jump hard into the VR side of it until they had a feel for what Labo would do. Thoughts?

When game theory is actually right about a prediction
I thought they predicted Augmented Reality over Virtual Reality
They took the patent out for this a few years ago, it wasn't a very hard prediction to make.
Once again they patented it, so not a prediction.
DitIsKaas!!! They never predicted VR seriously because they didn’t think the Switch would be able to handle serious VR so they just predicted AR
I wanted to scream VIRTUAL BOY at the screen Arlo! You forgot about the Virtual Boy!

Andrew Wood
I was fairly unimpressed by Play Station’s VR, the novelty wore off and it just look to ugly to be immersive.
Sebman when ya put it like that, it does make sense

Careless Gamers TV I would imagine that the switch pro will still be a tablet, so no puking is still going to happen. The switch pro might be more powerful, but you need something a little more sophisticated to make vr more than just a gimmick for the switch.

This is Awesome! All we need now is a Breath of the Wild styled thing for VR! (Maybe a setting you can toggle then put it in the labo headset)

Here are what seem to be the "minigames" based of what little you can see:
Blaster (the longer camera thing); A shooting minigame, probably against buildings or something.
Legend of Zelda VR! That would be the best thing ever
If you actually want zelda vr, then a mod for an emulator is probably closer to reality than a nintendo product
Oh my!

But imagine VR Metroid prime with the joy con as an option

It's about time Nintendo!
Hi Dad, I’m Hungry.
I honestly saw this coming as soon as I figured out what Labo was. The Switch is tailor-made for VR kits, and Labo makes it wearable.
Arlo with a labo VR headset is my new mood
I have a buddy who is a diehard fanatic for Nintendo who gets pissed off at me on a personal level for saying stuff like this and I don't expect Arlo's comment section to be too too much different, but every time Nintendo does something, it always ends up going something like this:
1. They come up with a great idea
2. They come up with an innovative concept for said idea
3. They find a way to screw it up on a fundamental level where it could have been so great
Arms, the Switch in general to a slightly lesser extent, Labo, Labo VR, Wii U, etc. they have been doing this a lot lately. I love the idea behind their stuff, and I always seem to end up buying it, but I can't stand how they manage to mess up their execution so consistently.
Virtual Boy 2.0! I hope that this becomes something more of a feature of the entire system. I would die if I could play BOTW in VR.
Labo may be a kid's first experience with VR, and their first impression will be something along the lines of: "this is cool, but can I play breath of the wild again?"
Now on to a topic that is only slightly related but still important:
VR is kind of in Purgatory, since 2016 not much has changed, the rift and vive are still the best experiences, the cardboard is the cheapest, and Gear VR is a pimped up cardboard.
Good point
But I believe a lot of people know that the more expensive VR headsets are vastly better. I mean, the cheap ones are literally cardboard, they wouldn’t expect much from that.
Also how would you rate PSVR? I tried it but it look to ugly to be really that good. (Also the controller was awful.)
Also the switch would have head tracking.
I'd like to see a VR LABO on Arlo's blue fuzzy head!! Maybe a VR mini game were the goal is to eat lots of yummy cookies!! Yum, yum, yum.....
