Wynn Modern Art WaterFX vs TriArt Liquid Glass - Product Comparison - Resin Alternatives

- Fluid Art Co is now stocking TriArt Liquid Glass! This product is a specially developed pouring medium and resin top coat alternative which is acrylic polymer based, and is advertised as safer to use than resin. There were a few customers using the product that noticed it is quite similar in the bottle and application to the Wynn Modern Art Luxe WaterFX, so this video is me taking a look at both products and comparing them like for like in a series of tests.
I will post updates to some of the longer experiments I'll be doing with these products in update videos.

I used to use Water Fx for my projects but then discovered Liquid Glass. Since they are both polymers, and look and work exactly the same for me, I switched to using Liquid Glass as a pouring medium for my geodes, as a top coat to mimic the resin look, and to glue down crystals and glitter. Love it 😍

Would this work well for a dimentional look on jewelry?
There was so many information in this - thank you. I understood that with triart your supposed to pour it on and then just tilt it off and over the sides rather than smoothing it out with your hands? I tilted it and no imperfections it dried perfectly smooth and silky and was very self leveling. So much to test and learn with these new products. Thank you for all you do 🤗
I did read that as well so I'll be testing some more with that method. I wanted to make it fair to both products to use the same method of spreading in this test.

I am very curious to see how your future tests show about the heat resistance and the sun and weather tolerance for both of these products and the Melbourne one
I find them very similar. The cost converted to $CAD is considerably more for the water FX. Around $80 CAD for half gallon liquid glass compared to $681 CAD for half gallon water fx at current exchange rate.
That difference is insane! It's not as bad in USD but with conversion rates it's just too much of a difference for such a similar product for me.
Thanks, just bought a bottle of the Tri-Art. I was intrigued by the fact that it is a pouring medium and a resin like varnish. Haven’t tried it yet.
I use it all the time as a pouring medium and also as a top coat. Give it a try!

Just curious if either bottle indicates how long it takes to fully cure when used as a sealer / top coat.

Neither bottle has that information on there. In terms of labelling the Wynn Luxe WaterFX only has the one branded label indicating name and volume, where the Liquid Glass has full manufacturing instructions, barcode, safety info etc. as well as usage instructions.
Thanks Mitch!! I enjoy when products are compared side by side. It helps me to determine where I spend my monthly painting budget🤣😂. For me the biggest takeaway was the tri art left dimples on that coaster throughout. That affects the overall look and I would be so upset. However, maybe you can test if an additional coat of triart would give a much smoother finish?!

Hey Cindy :) After a day or two the dimpling has settled into a perfectly smooth coat on the TriArt. I am planning to do some more testing as I have been informed that could have been from the way I applied it, as it is recommended to pour the product on and tilt the work piece to coat. I'll continue to play around with it when I have a chance :)

I appreciate the time you put into this demonstration/comparison. I'm a hard core resin girl for my coasters because of the hard glassy finish and heat resistance. I did try the WaterFX and it's difficult to say it's the same as resin. It's different. Certainly safer and that was a reason I considered switching. But too tough to compare once you've gone resin! I'm still playing with it and am using it as an adhesive which works excellent! I'd love to see how triart works over a skin! Could you try that? I'm looking to finish my bracelets with a coating that will add shine and protection without getting scratched up or will shrink or crack it people change the size of the bracelet. Anyway I've always turned back to your videos to learn and watch your technique. You're a great help on me still trying to bloom! It will be fun to see how you feel about both these products in the next couple weeks. Wow the price difference!! Now I don't feel bad at all about buying my Australian Floetrol!!
Thanks so much for the feedback! It's not been 5 days since I poured each product and they have not hardened up at all. My fingernail still easily dents both finishes, where resin by this time is usually set up enough so that does not happen. I shall continue my testing but I'm not holding my breath for a 'same as resin' result. I'm sceptical on the adhesive use as well due to how soft a thin layer of both products sets.
@@rainandpours I can attest to it's strength as an adhesive. I used waterFX to "glue" some crushed glass to try and mend a broken bowl and it's held super strong. I believe on my tile, it just wasn't smooth enough for my liking. And now I can't locate it to test a coffee cup!! Haha I only did one and knew I wasn't going to sell it.

Hey Mitchell ! So this is interesting because I got opposite results than you on your drying test...I found the liquid glass dried faster and with less dimples than the Waterfx. I am still waiting for my comparison coasters to cure to do a heat test....Waterfx definitely takes a few weeks to fully cure before you can put a hot cup on...looking forward to see your results
Don't bother with Wynn Modern Art. She is a scammer and very dishonest.

Hey Angela! I do Sheleeart blooms and sometimes the cell activator leaves crevasses in the paint. I'm unsure as to why on that particular tile these crevices showed through as the finish was meant to be glass like and smooth. My application could have been the cause there.

Yes I would say so. Because it's quite cold in Sydney at the moment these took longer to dry than most people have said it takes for them. That was 9hours for me and the liquid glass was still tacky, the WaterFX was just set.
Liquid Glass is awesome, no gloves needed
One more question have u used the gloss clear engine enamel as a replacement for resin? I have seen that and used it but haven’t done quite the experimentation as you 🥰
I have and I do not understand why people do it. It's not a safer alternative to resin, the fumes from that are more easily inhalable, you have to apply it outside, it needs to be baked to set to its maximum heat rating, and it's not food safe. Taking proper precautions with resin is enough to keep you safe and healthy while using it

Do these yellow or turn amber over time? Can you put 5his over watercolor?
Hey there. All varnishes or finishes will turn yellow over time so I cannot answer with anything other than yes. They cannot be used over watercolour and that is stated on the packages. I think because they are water based it will reactivate the watercolours on the paper.
Hi Mitchel, thanks for that awesome and thorough video. I’m also looking for a resin alternative as I don’t have the space to do it. I have been using WaterCote from just Resin which is a polyurethane “resin” more like a thick varnish, claims to be heat resistant, which works if dried long enough but i found it dries yellowish when i had it drying in a shelf with less airflow compared to drying on the benchtop. Maybe that’s something you might want to consider to test? The prices seem to be ok too

@@rainandpours that’s what i thought 😂, i stored in my laundry as that’s the only place i have left, but it still smelled after 6 weeks or so. I’m curious to see the video on that. As i said, some turned yellow some didn’t, also if they dry in a shelf ( less space in between than your bakers shelf ) it dried with big bubbles. I guess it needs enough airflow for nice results
One question for you! Have you tried using Luxe powders in a bloom pour with bloom pouring medium? I know they don't " melt" like pigments do. But because pouring medium dries clear so I bet it would be beautiful in a bloom!! Up to test that??
I haven't used them yet but have indeed used similar products in the past with success. In my most recent pours for a future project I have used a holographic glitter from Black Diamond Pigments, and it is drying quite nicely with an awesome effect. It has the same particle size as the Wynn powders so I'll be very keen to use the ones I have in my future work :)
@@rainandpours I tried some yesterday!! I mixed it with my regular bloom medium of Behr 8300 and polycrylic. They came out quite nice. I was worried there would be a scratchy surface in those areas but they dried nice n smooth. I use unicorn spit also in my blooms. It makes for fantastic cells if it's the last color put down!!

Are these products considered non- toxic? I’m looking for a resin substitute that is non-toxic.
I believe so as they are acrylic based
Is liquid glass SAME as liquitex high gloss?
No they are not the same. Liquitex high gloss will still show a fair bit of texture in the artwork and will not give that perfectly flat resin-like finish. Liquid Glass however will give a self-levelled resin appearance after 2 or more coats (sometimes 1 is enough)
Just checked out the Fluid Art Co. - the shipping to US was $200. Wow.
Considering it's US based it's kinda ridiculous right!
You might want to warm up the WaterFX before adding as topcoat. It helps with spreading it out. I just sit the bottle in a bowl of warm water for a few moments. I also tilt it around and add more WaterFX in any bald spot areas.
Tri art is more affordable and available by the gallon.
I use Wynn Modern Art Water FX all the time. For a top coat it applies much easier if you put the bottle in a cup of warm water to warm the FX up. Then apply the warmed up WaterFX over your painting and tip the canvas to cover completely and you'll get a very smooth finish. Applying the WaterFX straight out of the bottle, without warming it up, is meant to keep the shape more. Like if you want water drop effect on flowers or something.
She is a scammer! Her waterfx is practically the same product as she simply copied it from tripartite only to sell for more $. She does this with all of her products and operates like an MLM.
I just use it as a clear coat. To expensive for paints
I love tri art! Victoria Wynn is a scammer! I lost $10k with her branding and retreat. Seriously, stay away from that woman!
Absolutely agree with you! I know many people that have been scammed by her and then banned from her Facebook group so that they don’t let others know about it.
Pretty shitty of you to try and underhandedly push FAC while dissing Wynn Modern Art’s product😡 that’s exactly how that company roll though.
Hi Cathleen, I don't see how I have dissed Victoria's product at all. In fact she said she has no issue with my review and that we have exchanged all product information with professionalism. FAC does not manufacture the products I compared in this video, so I don't quite understand your argument here. The only tie FAC has to the TriArt Liquid Glass is that they are now stocking it. The entire reason for this video as I mentioned, is that several people contacted the company once they purchased the product and noticed the same thing I did: that they looked and behaved similarly. I tested them side by side, determined that they are indeed similar, and I have no bias towards either product. If you believe I have done this in any other way than with integrity I would be open to suggestions as to how I could have improved on my testing.
