UPDATES Since the publication of this video - 1: A torch isn't necessary....it actually is the AIR flow that is popping the bubbles, not the flame. So use an airbrush if you have one. I found a product called Tri Art Liquid Glass and it gives an even better result with a lot less probability for error. Using Liquitex is such a fussy technique. I applaud your patience!

Hi Heather. I have just very recently started learning to paint at age 62 and loving it. I'm at the stage of copying other artists paintings and learning to mix colours. Today I began painting a vase and noticed the original has a lovely shine on the surface so I googled to find out how it's done and found you. Very timely video, and very thorough! After being gone for 6 weeks - with no Pouring - I determined to catch up on varnishing before doing any more pours! So yesterday I got out my bottle of High Gloss. I’ve used it before, but with a small, damp rag, but wasn’t satisfied with results. I knew you’d be releasing this video in a matter of days, but I didn’t want to wait because I’ve got 25 or so to do. So...I channeled you! I said, What would Heather do...what’s going to be on that video?? True story! I had 3 - 3” foam brushes, so I got them out and that’s what I used! Much much better...but I was dipping the brush in a bowl with the varnish, instead of squirting the varnish directly on the canvas and using the ‘pushing’ motion...going to try that out today on this second batch!! Also...good tip to check the brush for imperfections on the leading edge of the brush, and don’t mess with it after 4 minutes!! !! Thanks for such a great, helpful video! I’m no longer dreading varnishing!!

thanks for your video.i have just started useing the liquid tex varnish and i thing it makes the canvas as good as resin and it does not have the extra trouble you must go trough for resin. i am qui.t happy with my results

The main thing I find helpful, is to literally not t put ANY pressure on the sponge. Imagine you are pouring a puddle of varnish and letting the weight of the sponge brush push it over the edge. This is how I get that glass like finish.
Ive been using the liquitex Gloss varnish 1/4 strength and its working great. I have gotten some pooling in areas. Im hoping that spraying the back w water will help. Thank you Heather.

That's gorgeous. I love it. You explain things very clearly and give great tips on what and what not to do when you're doing these things. Thank you so much. I heard the resin if not done properly can be very dangerous. There was someone on TH-cam before and she said she had to go to the hospital for treatment after it. It nearly killed her. The fumes off it. She said she'd never use it again. So that put me off using resin. I did not think you could get anything that would have ths look of resin but not be dangerous to use. Most sprays I know you have to use masks when you're using but this looks so easy and so beautiful when it's done. Your painting is beautiful and even more so now with that beautiful high gloss finish. Must get myself a bottle of this. It really adds to art work. Beautiful finishing touch. Thank you. Heather, I have to say everything about this varnish looks and acts identical to the product Liquid Glass from Tri-Art. You have a very short work time like the Liquitex, but I have some with 3 coats that look almost as thick and clear as resin. On the other hand, sometimes it seems to be thicker and then fails to self-level-so frustrating. Some have had deep ridges that settled out in later coats. I have been using a gloved finger because I am doing very small paintings, but I will try one of my sponges on the next one. It is a really beautiful finish-like yours!-and also dries completely, in 3 hours. By the way, I get what you say about checking for imperfections but what you didn’t mention is there is absolutely nothing you can do about it after about 5 minutes-LOL. Oh well, thanks for the video. I am going to finish up this bottle of Liquid Glass using your technique and then I may try the Liquitex.
Ty, I use this varnish for my painted rocks, but was applying with a paint brush. Occasionally I would get a rough small place somewhere on front. Now I know what I might be doing wrong. Such helpful info.
I've always thought that about my pours (that they look beautiful wet but dull dry) but I've never heard anyone else say it I thought I was the only one lol, deff gnna try this
I love this stuff. I find it's very forgiving and smooths out any lines. I once dropped a tube of paint on top of the varnish when it was drying and the next day, you couldn't see anything. I do use a very soft brush but I think they have changed the contents of the varnish because when I wash my brush out, it's still stiff the next day even though I wash it well, so was thinking about changing to a sponge brush and will give them a try thanks.
Well you still have to wash out the sponge brush really well and then make sure you get all of the soap rinsed out or you’ll have a little tiny bubbles in your varnish. Trust me I learn the hard way lol

I’ve been putting resin on my canvas and honestly it’s one of the hardest things to do when the canvas is so big gonna go to my local Michaels and buy a glass liquid text and see how it goes!!

Thank you SO much. I am scared to death of varnish, but I used Vallejo and I am done with it. I'm buying THIS!!! I appreciate the tutorial, I think I also did not wait long enough (4 week minimum) for my canvas to dry, because I got cracks. And I did not torch, I was afraid the heat would crack the varnish or would cloud the varnish. I can really sand the cracked varnish down and reapply?? I am so trying that! YAY ~ Jan Trent

Oh do not leave any type of puddle!! You are going for a micro thin layer on the surface..... very very very very very very very thin. Micro. Lol. I hope that was enough to let u know not to leave a puddle of any kind!! Secondly, the hot soap and water is to wash out your brush if u want to re-use it bcuz otherwise the varnish hardens on there and will ruin it. But be sure to thoroughly rinse out the soap or you will get bubbles the next time... which sucks! 😂
I don't know. I would try it on a photo I don't care about. The photo should first be mounted on a wood panel or something firm, or the paper will curl. You could also contact Liquitex customer service and see what they say.
Hi, this is beautiful! Do you have any idea how this might look on an acrylic painting that has more texture? After a few coats would it even out or would the surface be bumpy and icky looking?
I’m sure it would “collect” around the raised portions if u tried to do this method… but that would depend on just how much texture the canvas had on it. Feel free to try it out and come pack to share your results
A very thorough lesson. Thank You. I have been using ProMarine resin/epoxy, which when done right leaves a glass like look. This looks a little more natural. (subscribed +all)
Spray varnish has its uses too, it’s easy and convenient and has great results. I use the spray a lot now bcuz I do a lot of line work and embellishment on my pieces now, and the liquid varnish will just wash it off!!! Lol 😂
@@HeatherMaderArt yes it does it’s what I’ve been using since I started painting. But I’m still looking for more I want that high gloss glass look so hopefully I can follow your video correctly and get the same results. I just ordered it so fingers crossed!

Has anyone tried this on painted glass? I do acrylic pours over glass vases and candle holders and I’m looking for an alternative to Resin. I do not need something that’s dishwasher safe, just a protective top coat to prevent the paint from chipping off.

I haven't fixed it lol it was suggested to me to do another but to pour on it like I'm doing a painting. It was my first time doing a varnish. I haven't done any sense then. Hello Heather, I love what you do, and you explain it so well, I am new at that Dutch pouring and I love it. I dit a lot of painting this summer, and I want to offer them for Christimas, but I was afraid to varnish them, so I look at your tecnique and I try it, yesterday, I did my first layer, but there is some little bubble appearing, what did I did wrong. I hope you will be able to help me. Thanks again for all the beautiful painting your are doing. Sorry for my English, my main language is french and I came from the Province of Québec in Canada.
If u have little bubbles I find there are a few reasons.... DO NOT SHAKE UP THE BOTTLE before using! That will.cause them. Also many of.the bubbles will pop if u use the torch (with caution) and also make sure your foam bruss is brand new and not washed with soap. I washed mine with soap and some soap residue caused bubbles.
Thank you for this video. If I left this much varnish on my paintings, they would get an “alligator” pattern in the finish. Liquitex varnish is the only one I’ve found that won’t do this, but only if I apply it much thinner than you do. My Liquitex may not be the the High Gloss. Do you think that using that finish would make a difference?
I know the "alligator" look you are referring to! I've had that happen when I played around with gloss medium. I don't 'get that happening with this varnish - ever. It might seem like a thick layer, but I'm pushing like 98% of it OFF the canvas. Its kind of a wasteful way to do it, but man it looks amazing when its done! :)
@@bstanevich I use spray varnishes too - they are also perfect for certain pieces. Not every painting looks great with this much gloss on it. But some really POP.

Well - you CAN dilute it if you aren't going for the "mock" resin look. I've diluted it plenty of times if I'm just using a soft cloth to apply a micro-thin layer. But for this technique, the water doesn't help achieve that resin look.

I saw someone spray the dried painted canvas with water before adding and spreading the varnish. Eliminates brush marks. Works great.

I use this stuff too. I always add 3-4 coats. It's wonderful. Makes your work gleam. I do use a soft brush though.

You can try using an airbrush or something to get any bubbles out and see if that works. I usually torch.

Also, I notice you said the go over the canvas light, do we leave puddles on varnish on the canvas or should we thin it out? I thought I saw a puddle left on yours. Thanks
Oh do not leave any type of puddle!! You are going for a micro thin layer on the surface..... very very very very very very very thin. Micro. Lol. I hope that was enough to let u know not to leave a puddle of any kind!!
Secondly, the hot soap and water is to wash out your brush if u want to re-use it bcuz otherwise the varnish hardens on there and will ruin it. But be sure to thoroughly rinse out the soap or you will get bubbles the next time... which sucks! 😂

I don't know. I would try it on a photo I don't care about. The photo should first be mounted on a wood panel or something firm, or the paper will curl.
You could also contact Liquitex customer service and see what they say.

What’s the soap and water for? I might have missed it. Clean the canvas before varnish? Wouldn’t you use alcohol for that? Thank you for this idea!

Hi, this is beautiful! Do you have any idea how this might look on an acrylic painting that has more texture? After a few coats would it even out or would the surface be bumpy and icky looking?
I’m sure it would “collect” around the raised portions if u tried to do this method… but that would depend on just how much texture the canvas had on it. Feel free to try it out and come pack to share your results

Thank you for the video. Is the 3 layers the key to not getting streaks, along with not going over the layers that the varnish was already applied?
I think practice, along with all I have suggested is the key to not getting streaks.

A very thorough lesson. Thank You. I have been using ProMarine resin/epoxy, which when done right leaves a glass like look. This looks a little more natural. (subscribed +all)

Spray varnish has its uses too, it’s easy and convenient and has great results. I use the spray a lot now bcuz I do a lot of line work and embellishment on my pieces now, and the liquid varnish will just wash it off!!! Lol 😂
@@HeatherMaderArt yes it does it’s what I’ve been using since I started painting. But I’m still looking for more I want that high gloss glass look so hopefully I can follow your video correctly and get the same results. I just ordered it so fingers crossed!

Jenny Arnold oh, I would have no idea. I'm sure it's waterproof to a point....and it is flexible. But beyond that I couldn't tell you if you should use it for that!

I've updated to say:: you don't really need the torch! The airbrush or hair dryer on cool 🆒 should do the trick.

I do acrylic pours over glass vases and candle holders and I’m looking for an alternative to Resin.
I do not need something that’s dishwasher safe, just a protective top coat to prevent the paint from chipping off.
Hi thanku very much. AMAZING PAINTING & VARNISH!!! I have the gloss liquitex varnish, not the high gloss. I used it once & I got lots of brush stroke on it. I haven't fixed it lol it was suggested to me to do another but to pour on it like I'm doing a painting. It was my first time doing a varnish. I haven't done any sense then. I haven’t ever done that either. I’ve poured a straight gloss medium over the top and it can be pretty. Varnishing is tricky
Hello Heather, I love what you do, and you explain it so well, I am new at that Dutch pouring and I love it. I dit a lot of painting this summer, and I want to offer them for Christimas, but I was afraid to varnish them, so I look at your tecnique and I try it, yesterday, I did my first layer, but there is some little bubble appearing, what did I did wrong. I hope you will be able to help me. Thanks again for all the beautiful painting your are doing. Sorry for my English, my main language is french and I came from the Province of Québec in Canada.
If u have little bubbles I find there are a few reasons.... DO NOT SHAKE UP THE BOTTLE before using! That will.cause them. Also many of.the bubbles will pop if u use the torch (with caution) and also make sure your foam bruss is brand new and not washed with soap. I washed mine with soap and some soap residue caused bubbles.
Thank you for this video. If I left this much varnish on my paintings, they would get an “alligator” pattern in the finish. Liquitex varnish is the only one I’ve found that won’t do this, but only if I apply it much thinner than you do. My Liquitex may not be the the High Gloss. Do you think that using that finish would make a difference?
I know the "alligator" look you are referring to! I've had that happen when I played around with gloss medium. I don't 'get that happening with this varnish - ever. It might seem like a thick layer, but I'm pushing like 98% of it OFF the canvas. Its kind of a wasteful way to do it, but man it looks amazing when its done! :)

@@bstanevich I use spray varnishes too - they are also perfect for certain pieces. Not every painting looks great with this much gloss on it. But some really POP.

Quick question: Why do you advise not to mix the varnish with water? Asking because a lot of other videos recommend diluting it and I'm curious as to the pros and cons. Thank you again for your work!
Well - you CAN dilute it if you aren't going for the "mock" resin look. I've diluted it plenty of times if I'm just using a soft cloth to apply a micro-thin layer. But for this technique, the water doesn't help achieve that resin look.

I’m not overly familiar with isolation coats. I would contact Liquitex to see if that is ideal for your painting
