Don’t burn them.... find your story... find your characters... find your theme.... and rewrite them! I have had rough drafts which look completely different after the final draft is complete, but the essence and tone are there. It is still the same chapter, but more intriguing, more revealing, and presenting the reader with clarified questions about the human condition which the narrator is promising to answer as the story unfolds.

Update 2: it is complete! after 10 years. ive got chills. now just editing, beta readers and off to publishing!
Update: I'm stunned at the comments this has received. Thank you guys so much!! I hit 300 pages and am at the story's climax. One day i will comment the title here when it's published
ya know, ive been writing a story since i was 17, im at over 200 pages and its been a journey. im really only halfway done. ive literally written it for 10 years, the plot has transformed and its just, its unlike anything ive read. its semi biographical and it matters because, its a life guide on how to overcome grief. but its personal grief based on actions, regrets, and death. its about how to say goodbye. unfortunately school has me distracted so i cant work on it like i did in the summer, but its so special to me and i feel in my bones that when, not if but when, its published, it will save me and be a one hit wonder like "to kill a mockingbird". its a story that i hope would save someone who is thinking of ending things, a story that would release the tension and sadness that life puts on us. i have the ending envisioned and its just, its my life work. i hope you guys can read it someday.

Well then. Time to scrap the first 30 pages of my novel, because this video made me rethink my life choices! LOL
Thank you Abbie. You probably just saved me from a total failure of a book and also saved me from *actually* reconsidering my life choices -- as in, my dreams to be a novelist.
It gets frustrating and discouraging when you don't even like the first chapter of your own book. I mean, if you made it from your own mind at least *you* should enjoy it, right? Because if *you* , the one who put the work in to bring your imagination to life, don't like it, then *who would* ? Pretty discouraging for young people like me who aspire to be a novelist. So thank you for these tips and this knowledge that I can use; I know it'll really help me in the long run. Have another subscriber!

I have ADHD and don't have enough patience to read a book. So I was never the person to read books. Instead I saw a lot of tv shows, movies, anime and later I started reading manhwa. And I used to make my own plot from my favourite shows when I didn't get computer access as a kid. When I was 15, I realised that I want to be writer. I have a lot of ideas. I'm 17 now. And my opening of a book is ready. I downloaded Fortelling app and arranged everything.
But when it comes to writing it down, I don't really know how to put everything together. Then I bought myself a couple of thriller books, started one, but still my patience is low. I took my book to college so I could read it in my bus since I don't have any distractions. That worked. I have college off for I don't know how many days before 2nd year starts.

I had heard time writing my story when I first started. I wrote plays before trying out at writing a novel. Now let me tell you my first couple of chapters I had lost count how many times I delete and re-written my werewolf story. At first I thought it was great. At the time I was putting a lot of flitters in the chapters just so I can get to the part where my character turns into a wolf. I was so proud at what I had written. Until someone said it didn't make any sense . I was hurt at what people were saying I'm not going to lie. So I put my story on the blackburn and didn't want to pick it back up. Until I met you Abbie and how you broke down al the stuff you need to put into your story. That's when everything became clear. I picked my novel back up and I've been working on it since.

Like many have said, your editing and relatable writer's skit in this was awesome.
Around midnight last night, a writing idea came to me but because of fatigue I, stupidly, didn't write in down🤦🏻‍♀️. I've spent most of the day trying to conjure it back, until I watched this video and it sprung up!
Thanks for helping me my idea back and the writing advice.

Hi Abbie, I accidentially came across your channel. Thanks for your great introduction to first chapters and so on. I have always wanted to write a story, but never had the nerve to start - maybe a "problem to write about?! - since I taught my students something about hooks, why sth. matters etc. when writing essays or creating videos. Yet I have not thought about using that for my own writing projects. I do know the basic skills, theoretically at least, like the principle for a plot - "A person has a problem". My problem: how to avoid writing a story". " Could be another item on my bucket list. 😃 Thanks. Chris

There’s a great video on the movie Collateral by Lessons from the Screen Play that talks about midpoint collision showing how the characters internal conflicts essentially flip not just in a single night but act and moment. This immediately made me think of how you can build and play with structures like these after you learn them. Overall my favorite oversimplified advice is to just write and wait to criticize yourself for *after* you get something down. You correct the process as it goes on but not before you’ve actually got anything out and accept the process that gets that out no matter what it looks like. Even if it’s utter nonsense or hey maybe it’s not even in a human language. Even bad results can lead to better ones. I draw and I make drawings all the time that I know I’m going to hate, but it’s my process and you have to start somewhere otherwise I wouldn’t start at all.

    Hi Abbie!
I started writing this year during quarantine and I participated in NaNoWriMo for the first time and to my big surprise, I won! But I am dreading going back to it knowing that I will hate it. You have said time and time again that internal conflict is the key and I know it is because I beta read a lot and I know what a good story looks like. The only problem is, when I think about the characters from these stories, I try to answer these questions for them and I do get everything, mostly everything. I get the desire and the fear, but what I don't get is the misbelief and how the fear is stopping the protagonist from getting what they desire. Can you please give more examples from books and movies to get a general idea of how to put it in a story and also to get a better idea of what the misbelief and how the fear is stopping the protagonist from getting what they desire looks like (I know you have given quite a few examples in your character profile videos earlier in your channel, but a few more examples will be appreciated)
    Thank you.
