What would we do without you Shane? Appreciate All of the Years of Amazing, videos and information on all of the devices you have tested! Wish you all the Best! 💪🏽🙏🏽💯
Thanks for pushing Garmin for fixing gradient problems in Edge units - I saw your conversation in Garmin Beta Forum. Much appreciated! This seems like a good topic for another video 😅
This and the new 1040 beta firmware seem to have finally fixed the constant varia (and light network) and other sensor dropouts. Only taken them about 3 years - also been present for ages on x30 units.
Because of this video I did check my eRTL615 and that one also had an update. The update added the option to set custom light modi where you can configure the light pattern exactly as you wish. The light should also remember the last light modus when powering up.. Thanks for reminding me to check 👍
Never really had disconnects on my wahoo, but i miss the peloton mode and some type of configurable light options and being able to change profiles from the wahoo. I would like to have the light off and only if a car is detected to start blinking for a maximum battery life. And a battery optimized night blinking mode, with less lumen. Can't be so hard to do, but probably garmin doesn't want to.
Holy crap Garmin finally fixed the sensor errors after 4 years?! I'm going to test this out as I've gotten so used to power cycling my Varia 3-4 times every ride to clear the errors!
Those 0:9 errors clear with a tap of the screen for me. And I think I installed this update ok yesterday (though it seemed very quick) and still got the error from passing a traffic light radar.
Shane, in your discussion with Garmin did they hint at a new 715? I think there are a lot of us that like the concept of that device, just not the current execution.
Hope there is a USB C version coming, it's amazing how fast that's taken over in the house in the last few months. Have to hunt for a USB or Lightning charger now.
In case Garmin is reading these For the 715. Allow us smartphone users to only have radar only mode without the light. It goes into a standby which is equivalent to off Also. Allow the photo button on the side to lock in video incidents like the Cycliq front camera. It’s so much easier to find vids of incidents when I can “bookmark” it. Thanks garmin
Well I saw your vid, updated my Varia to 3.34, and took a ride. 30 minutes in radar disconnected. Worse yet, I had to manually reconnect (in the past, it would typically reconnect automatically after a short outage). Using an Edge 530 that is up-to-date. So maybe the problem isn’t truly fixed yet.
I have 840 and after updating on first 3 hour ride I had several disconnects. After that I am getting a disconnect most rides. It always reconnects but sometimes there are like 5 disconnects in a row so the radar provides no info for 15+ seconds.
Thanks for the review! As a recommendation, as I pair sensors for the first time, I name them with my initials. E.g: NB Radar. That way you can recognize them easier from near by sensors.
Thanks, as you said with the Element you won't get an update notice. Pro tip, Garmin express would not recognize my unit until I switch to the Garmin USB cord supplied with my unit.
For those of us with only one sensor connected it was obvious which one was updating. 😀 More excited about the channel management item, mine disconnects when I bunch up near other varia users like at stop lights and rest stops
The question shouldn't be why Garmin isn't releasing an update so late into the product cycle. But rather the question should be why it is important for Garmin to continue supporting its number one safety feature that is being used well past the lifespan of their other products. It is a safety device so it is paramount to continue supporting it so that it isn't lacking in that safety department. Not stopping updates for them prematurely is the right decision and I hope Garmin can continue keeping us in the loop with any major safety concerns with the devices.
My 510 battery holding charge is getting less & less but after 4 years of constant usage I guess that’s to be expected. Was thinking of picking up a 515 (would get the camera version if it was any good) but maybe I should hold off for a while.
@@sruo42 So I've just done a chat with Garmin (UK) & essentially they will give you 30% discount to "trade in" your exisiting device & get a newer model. They are £169.99 on their website so would work out at £119 so only very slightly cheaper than Wiggle at the time of writing. I would just replace the battery if it was straightforward but it doesn't look like that's possible.
In the sensor part you can rename your sensor in what you want ( the ID will be changed into a name) so then it tells you what device it is, instead of a ID number
I appreciate your video. I went for a nice long 100k Plus ride this weekend with the new firmware. What an absolute train wreck. I've never had more disconnecting, false positives, and annoying notification spasms. I hope there's another firmware along shortly because the one that I'm using now made this device about halfway useless. After my third reboot of the 515 I finally just turned it off.
Just bought the RTL516 (wanted to buy the 515 but the shop I ordered it from is German and I didn't notice it until I payed. But still an awesome product!
I updated last week and I'm getting the 09 error just as often. What may or may not be connected is my first ride after the update. My 1030 worked fine for the 7.5miles ride to the club meet but 5mins after the club ride had started it dropped everything (ant +) and shutdown. It restarted ok and I never lost the ride out just the minute round the corner after the drop outs.
Thanks for the update. I'm surprised the android app doesn't notify me of an update. Rather I need to install a desktop app to do this as I have a wahoo bolt.
Mine updated on the weekend but like you I didn’t know what was going to be updated. Can you even rename this device? Will keep my eye out on the connection but mine has been mostly fine. Such a great device, although come on Garmin, where is the new headlight?
Since the update came out every time I connect the light to my laptop to charge, it asks me if I want to install the update. It subsequently says it was a 'successful update ' but it will ask me again the next time 😐
I have followed you for many years now and I am very gratefull for all your reviews. I got the RCT 716 and the VIRB Ultra 30. Now I am about to buy myself a Drone. Can you recommend any?
There's an nagging bug I wish they'd change. On your Edge you can use the RTL light and radar network independently. If however you use the device with the smartphone app and turn off the light network, the radar also stops working. Rather unfortunate. I had an unusual usecase I was trying to solve for via the RTL. I had a bad nagging neck issue for months. When my wife and I walked along our usual trail, gravel riders often came up behind us rather quickly and dangerously, at times. I thought why not clip put the Varia in my rear pocket, disable the light, and use my phone app to alert me so I could move off the trail and avoid having to turn my painful neck constantly. Anyway, no such luck.
Never seen an error 09 but is that because I'm using a Bolt V2 and not a Garmin head unit? In any even seems like some commenters are saying they are still getting 09s after the update. To me, for my use case, this sounds like there's no compelling reason to do the update. Or do I miss something? Now if there was an update to do something about what seems like jittery/multiple first detection of a car then I'd be all over that. It's like a car gets picked up and dropped multiple times when first coming into range. The resulting "stutter" chime is pretty annoying.
I have a RTL515. I use a Wahoo Roam and do not own a computer. My iPad Pro is not compatible with Garmin Express. My Fenix 3 updates over my home Wifi automatically. If only the Varia app could be used as a conduit for updates. Does anyone know of a workaround for this situation?
If your computer doesn’t recognize that your device is connected by USB cable, use the cable that came with the device which has Garmin stamped on it. BTW - I continued to get incessant radar failures after the update, but I’m going to delete the old network and form a new one. Fingers crossed.
It may not be connected, but my 515 has now failed - it wont stay turned on for more than a few seconds. Its 14 months old, waiting on a response now from Garmin customer support.
Sometimes the updates on the RTL units take a few minutes. I thought I’d bricked mine with a previous update too. Give it a full charge, turn it on, leave it on the bench for a 10 minutes. Keep me posted. 👌🏼
The ONLY issue I have with my Varia RTL515 is that some times it shows up on my Wahoo (both v1 & v2 so it's not the Wahoo at fault) RADAR ERROR - and I'm without radar. Hit dismiss & the radar comes back. In most cases it's random but there's 1 specific patch that whenever I ride it I always hit the error. It's not like there's a lot of overhead electrical cabling etc either.
I suspect that you will find that it is near a traffic light. Mine does this if I cross a road using a pelican crossing, or when I go past 'some' traffic light sensors and road works traffic lights. I reported it to Garmin (and Wahoo) a year or so ago - Garmin gave me a replacement unit to try (which was exactly the same). I'm hoping that the fix Shane has highlighted (Thanks Shane!) will fix it. I guess I will find out tomorrow!
wtf, I did many times to update the software 3.34 on my edge 540 solar but always failed! Very frustrated! I think its not compatible with the new edge, i dont know. Very annoying
I have the 516 and also see version 515 as an update in Garmin Express. I think that won't work, right? It would be great if I could get it to flash too. ;-)
It was discussed with Garmin AU. I asked if I could test ride the Neo M3 they had on display, I offered to do this after hours (the expo was only open for a few hours per day). I’d bring in my own bike with my power meters and Edge units to dual/triple record the data. I offered to review it only for Garmin and not share the data publicly. Maybe this would give them confidence to have one sent to the Lama Lab? Garmin AU had to check with HQ (Garmin global). That next day I received an email indicating I was free to use that bike that was on the Neo M3 already and during expo hours only. So my request was denied. I was allowed the same access as the general public (which they really couldn’t deny). I note that they’re sending the Neo M3 to a lot of their sponsored partners and there’s a lot of promotional content being posted. So they have stock even prior to launch. I’m still none the wiser why I’m being shut out from a previously good relationship with them. For now I’ll continue to make Garmin content. It does well. I use their products daily. Whatever the issue is lies 100% on their side and until we know why, it’s all just a little awkward for them.
@@gplama All very strange if you ask me. I’m guessing you previously had a good relationship with them & nothing had happened that would change that. You probably don’t get it so I’ve no chance. Their loss.
Unfortunately can't update it, keep disconnecting from the computer and it's not working at all. connected Garmin and no use they keep pushing me to a local partner.
Got a bug on the 1040 solar with the RTL515, the notification in the top right corner keeps flashing even after disconnecting the radar (the wifi looking one)
Sounds like an EDGE 1040 issue. There have been a ton of beta firmwares from 19.x to now 20.x in recent weeks. 20.04 beta had "Hid disconnected radar icon when in an indoor activity profile.". I wouldn't recommend switching to the beta firmware stream at this point though.
You can't. The Varia Mobile app looks like it only updates the RCT715/716. You'll need to borrow a Mac/PC and install Garmin Express to get this update if you're not using an EDGE.
My Varia keeps disconnecting on every ride now, on and off so you never know when it's working. Reading forums, this is a very common issue and I can't find a resolution, Garmin Express says the software is up to date, although it also shows as not connected to Garmin Express even though it is via USB to the samesoftware that's saying it's up to date - any ideas? Also, does the new camera version have the same issues? It's also saying version 3.7 and mine is thr RTL510 for info..
Time to crank up some banging tunes from 2007 and pull out that USB-A to MicroUSB cable and let Garmin Express sort that out. For reference, Beyoncé has the top Billboard song in 2007.
@@gplama 🤣I just don't understand it, Garmin also manufacture the Edge hardware, so at least release an update that doesn't cause bugs on your own devices, at the very minimum. They're so poor at this stuff
Thankfully they're only temporary traffic lights! :) I wonder if that's getting caught up with any car detection those lights are using. Hopefully we'll see Garmin switch from 24Ghz to 77Ghz like the automotive industry. "20x better performance in range resolution and accuracy" at 77Ghz apparently.
In the UK I get an error every time I pass one of those flashing slow down speed limit signs, the ones that use radar and go off if a driver is speeding.
These are traffic lights for the HS2 railway line construction, so maybe 'semi-permanent' is a better description (those in the UK will know what I'm talking about!). Sounds plausible regarding their car detection. I'd say the overwhelming majority of times I see this error is at these lights. The 77GHz sounds promising 👍
There was an update to that a long while ago. Make sure you're on the latest version with Garmin Express. Here's my video on that RTL510 update: th-cam.com/video/sOunGqFIDoc/w-d-xo.html
Unfortunately not. I’ll keep using their products and making content on them. Issue is clearly at their end that I’d like them to resolve, or at least explain as a matter of professional courtesy.
The Varia radar unit disconnection errors finally stopped , but then the rubberised case material went brittle and the on/off button cracked and fell off while on a ride in the rain. It's junk now. Same thing happened on my Edge 1000.....the rubberised case material goes brittle and then on/off button falls off. An email to Garmin Australia was never answered. A lot of money for junk quality products in my opinion. Enjoyed the radar in the short time I had it.🤣
Hopefully they do update it as the current design looks dated. Radars are great and everyone should get one but the aesthetics of the Garmin radar ruins the look of modern bikes.
If it's out of warranty and you want to flip a coin with your luck, there should be aftermarket replacement batteries that might be worth looking into.
Question to Varia owners: can I disable / enable radar from Garmin unit (quick button or something) ? When I ride on bike lanes, or near roads - radar beeps without any need, it's annoying - and consuming battery, so I would like on the go to disable / enable radar when needed

Sorry thats the radar, the 1040 is 20.09
@@stevesmith9082 Oh.. you're on 20.09, I assume beta? 20.11 was out a few days ago if you haven't tried that.
Thank you. No need for a new one. Current one works perfectly.
But if it isn't broken.... supercharge it! 🤣 And USB-C sounds like a perfect 'low hanging fruit' refresh to this device.
Yeah probably but the device is nearly perfect as is apart from usb-c@@gplama
@@gplamaagreed, got one of these from Santa and was surprised it wasn’t USB C.
How do you download the update if you don't have a computer or mac.
You can't. The Varia Mobile app looks like it only updates the RCT715/716. You'll need to borrow a Mac/PC and install Garmin Express to get this update if you're not using an EDGE.
@@gplama many thanks for your prompt reply Bob
When will be USB -C?
A good question for Garmin.
Which head unit are you using?
@@gplama it doesn't matter if I use the varia headset or the edge 1030+, does the same on both?
Hmm. One for Garmin support then.
@@gplama thanks, I've logged it with them and await a response, but it's scary how many people this is happening to. Great contnet btw😁
Does it have USB-C now?
Not yet.
Any update rtl510? Boo. It needs a fix for errors on steel bridges.
Using EDGE 840 but update fails every time, sticks at 4 on the spinning counter, says updated failed and to try again from the menu 🤦♂️
I have found for the Edge to update any sensor it takes three to five tries.
Got a 0:9 error with this firmware when passing temporary traffic lights.
@@TrickyTree84ah that’s what’s doing it
In America at least the Varia 515 is selling for $100s more than the 315 version. $100 dollars seems like a lot of money to pay for a tail light.
Thank you.
Update the rtl510 ffs.. I get disconnects quite often..
There was an update to that a long while ago. Make sure you're on the latest version with Garmin Express. Here's my video on that RTL510 update: th-cam.com/video/sOunGqFIDoc/w-d-xo.html
@@gplama will check. Pretty sure plugged it in a month or so ago and didint see anything. Its a weird disconnect, and reconnect few mim after.
Tried two update twice and it just hangs at 15%
With Garmin Express?
Still here wishing for a new USB-C version....😢
And here's me talking about it... or at least the idea they're likely working on it.
USB C all the things 🙏
so you raising in the garmin rank again? I wouldn't talk to them until they send u the new trainer lol
Unfortunately not. I’ll keep using their products and making content on them. Issue is clearly at their end that I’d like them to resolve, or at least explain as a matter of professional courtesy.
It’s funny, I hadn’t had a 0.9 error for a while but first ride after this update, I got the error…
If they move to 77Ghz from 24 then the array size should allow for a much more compact device.
@@gplama I will be so pissed if all they do is just change the USB and re-use the same shell.
@@JFomo Set your expectations low... Less chance of disappointment. 😅
I think I kill myself If I ride the left side of the road.
:)
But since I use it there is more respect on my Dutch roads .
Mine has died and I’m hanging out for the updated model (whatever that means!)
If it's out of warranty and you want to flip a coin with your luck, there should be aftermarket replacement batteries that might be worth looking into.
@@gplama I've done a bit of research, looks like a common/known issue with the on/off switch!
First
2nd. Photo finish!
I got a cycliq camera front a back, what a piece of shit, they didn’t last long, total waste of money
Which model? The Fly 12 Sport looked to be a big step up from their previous front unit.
Question to Varia owners: can I disable / enable radar from Garmin unit (quick button or something) ? When I ride on bike lanes, or near roads - radar beeps without any need, it's annoying - and consuming battery, so I would like on the go to disable / enable radar when needed
It depends on what headunit/GPS you're using. The Karoo range has a quick-mute option which can be useful in heavy traffic.
@@gplama I have Garmin 1040, can't find anything there
What about rtl510 🥹
Discussed in the video. No recent updates.
@@gplama many thx!
