Do you have any recordings? I bet they would be amazing. That kinda of history must be saved. Pictures / videos would help a lot. Thanks for raising your hand!
Leon Russell was my life time coach and that's why I am still in the music industry. He was a great person with a very kind heart and even greater creator of music of all genres. I will love him and Joni Mitchell forever for teaching me the ropes of the music business.
Well said! So much talent that grew up naturally, playing the backrooms, churches, & hollers - no instant stardom here - he paid his dues & learned his craft - even playing with Glen Campbell, & Willie in the Wrecking Crew - a master!
@ Lisa Silver Such a naive comment. You must be very young. Leon Russel was anything but under appreciated. How can anyone in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame be under appreciated?
@@eudymaverickmentor Sorry, but I agree with Lisa. Why? Because on several occasions, I bought tickets to his shows and I was amazed at just how close to the stage I could get. This guy would play in bars with a seating capacities of 1,000 and oddly enough, tickets would be easy to obtain. I remember seeing him at the Medina, MN Ballroom on 03/14/02. Sat about 8 rows back. When he came back after intermission, half of the audience had left so I took a seat in the front row directly in front of him, no less than 15 feet away. While I may have appreciated him, many others didn't. With his talent, Leon should have been selling out stadiums.
Have been a big Leon Russell fan since the early 1970's. Had the privilege of seeing him live once in the mid 1980's, playing in a 200 seat saloon in Southern California (Orange County). Loved the New Grass Revival album when it came out in 1981, and always liked this version of Wild Horses.
He was a very good man I saw him in concert and I was 19 and I'll be 70 this November and he sounds just awesome as live as he does on TV radio whatever very nice person and he knows that they hardly ever play Leon Russell on the radio anymore 👃
I had the awesome experience after many years of attending his concerts I was given the opportunity of sitting on the stage for the entire show right next to his piano on 2/4/05, a cherished memory.
I can’t help but think of Keith Richards and Gram Parsons hearing this…..Leon ……I have been a life long and dedicated fan my entire adulthood! We have been lucky to have shared your path in life! You have touched many of us! ♥️
The fact I am only 21 and I love artists like Leon Russell, people that started their career decades before I was even born, is alone a sign of their greatness :) Fly high, Brother Leon, you will be missed
God bless you and your lovely choices of music...so much better than a lot of music currently...although life goes on, and there are still some goldies like Arcade Fire...Radio Head...
Leon Russell was a great musician, song writer, producer for many famous artists but he never received justice for all his creativeness as an artist. He helped make many artists famous but only a few ever gave him credit for his help.
I absolutely love everything about Leon & would have loved to run my fingers through that long beautiful silky hair & kissed those soft lips while gazing into his passionate eyes.
Quite simply, Leon Russell is a musical genius. Love it when Leon tells the story of how Gram Parsons gave Leon the top hat Al Jolson wore in The Jazz Singer and gave him this song (Wild Horses) to sing. This is a fantastic arrangement/version of the song and no one can top how Leon plays piano and Sam Bush plays the mandolin.
Gram couldn’t give the song to Leon. It wasn’t his to start with. It belongs to the songwriters Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Gram had nothing to do with Wild Horses.
My comment is not about who wrote or "owned" the song Wild Horses; it is about how Leon first became aware of the song. Leon often told the story about how, just before leaving for the first show of the Mad Dogs traveling circus, he got a call from Gram Parsons saying that he loved Leon's music & wanted to meet him. As Leon explained, at that meeting, Gram gave Leon Al Jolson's top hat & the song Wild Horses as a song that he thought Leon should perform.
I don't think that is exactly what Leon saId. First of all, he knew Gram before Mad Dogs ever was even thought of. He played piano on this song on a Flying Burrito Brother's album. Gram did say he thought Leon should do this song
this is one of the tunes-videos I return to time n again. Leon Russell brought soul and musicality to dang near anything he played. I'm north of 65 and have completely surrendered to the music of my youth - late 60's - 70's - because it was just so damn good!
Tomorrow, 6/14/16, marks the forty-sixth anniversary of Leon's first performance as a solo act. He was backed by the Shelter People. I first saw the MOSAT live a few months later. He came on stage alone in white bell-bottoms, a red turtle neck and a blue blazer. He sat at a grand piano and played this song solo. He then stood, took off his blazer, folded it neatly and placed it on the piano bench, strapped on his guitar and announced "Now it's time for the rock and roll part of the show!" The band bounded on stage, plugged in and rocked the house. I have experienced many great live concert moments but none better.
Such a musical focus...his own tempo and feel...unique was this master of space and time...RIP Leon...see you in Heaven. Any one who ever jammed with Leon was truly blessed.

Omg I cried like a baby!!
He was the most low key genius that ever lived. What a voice ! What a presence he was !
By traditional standards Leon’s voice wasn’t great but; when the Oklahoma blues influence was added everyone knows it’s Leon Russel.
Absolutely loved Leon. Was fortunate to see him live in Memphis in the early Seventies. What a gift he had - what a gift he was.
I saw him at pine knob, Michigan in the 90s. Great show
Leon had this incredibly strong inner spirit, which you could only feel seeing him live.
