  • The Automotons are a massive threat to Super Earth. They are scary, loud, and smell a bit like motor oil. In this video I cover the lore of the Automotons in Helldivers 2, and where they likely came from based on the lore of Helldivers 1.

One possibility is that automatons are similar to the simulacrums from the Titanfall/Apex Legends series in that they are controlled by a human brain, but the brain itself is in another location, with the automaton's head acting as an antenna of sorts. I suspect this because no matter where you shoot an automaton, it will always bleed oil and scrap. If it had an actual human brain inside, I would expect it to bleed a different color if you shot it.
Another possibility is that the Automatons are like the robots depicted in the game SOMA, in that they use human brains as a "source code" which they then create digital copies of in order to give life to their troops.

Also making people sized and shaped bots, skips having to go through the process of re-designing stuff for the bots to use, like guns, vehicles, stairs, doorways, doors, ladders, washing machines, etc, and at the same time there are nearly infinite advantages to being tall and bi-pedal.

Another reason human shape has an advantage is that every human tool or machine was designed for it. The biggest problem the military currently has with exosuits is the extra bulk making it harder to fit through doors and interact with tools they weren't made for. And exosuits don't even change the shape, they just add a little bulk.
Also, the reason they're slow is because they were made mainly to work mines and carry heavy rocks wothout breaking their backs. The transports being converred onto airships is another example of this.

One of the PA announcements on the super destroyers is a long the lines of "What makes you human? Your skull!". Thus is why all the bots still have skulls.
As for the ATAT walkers, it helps in guerrilla warfare. A normal manufactorium is a static structure and thus once discovered, can be bombed from orbit. Albeit cheaper and easier to stock. An ATAT walker makes bots on the go and can strike or rebuild from unforseen directions. Which is really helpful in default or shortening supply lines for offense.
