Thanks for watching guys! Part 3 officially starts at 00:59 if you've already watched part 1 and 2. 😉 Love you all regardless of whether you have a beard or not! Oh, and my audio gear I use for wedding ceremonies is here: bit.ly/mattsaudiogear
Matt WhoisMatt Johnson Matt, I recorded 2.7k on mavic, a6300 slow mo I think is 1080p hd.. and then the rest using a6300 in 4k... how do I export the video? as 1080p? or upscale to 4k? how do?
I always love this style of "pov day of" videos. they're so packed with great information. I love seeing the through process of different people handling the same situation in different ways and getting great results. and watching people problem solve in the moment.
It's amazing you could get the 2 angles from the side, reaction shots, and then them down the aisle with just 2 of you! I've done a few weddings and I still struggle the most with the ceremony because of how fast pace (and random) it could be.
Matt, thank you so much for all of the videos you have posted. You have absolutely no idea how helpful all of them are, and you're awesome at what you do. I aspire to be as great and knowledgable as you. You have prepared me for my first wedding. Again, thank you!!
Ahhh I have my first wedding shoot this Saturday. Just got my Sony a7iii with 24-70mm sigma. Should be epic! Loved the information you provided me with
Holy fuck. This looks intense. I've taken an interest in shooting weddings and trying to find people to shadow to see how it's done. Now I see why videographers want you to have experience shooting a wedding before joining them. Great video Matt! These BTS vids really helped me out a lot!
Matt I know this is an old video, but it was very valuable to me. I thank you for the time you took to put this together. I have followed a lot of your videos and they all have been very helpful. I even got 2 recent social media post praising my wedding video work from two brides! Thanks again 🙏
Definitely learned a lot from part-1 through 3, really awesome seeing all the detail and process that goes into filming weddings. You guys are awesome!!!
dude, i love this series - seriously its helping me feel way more prepared for an upcoming wedding shoot. thank you so much for creating this. You sir have made an impact :D
Hey Matt, I found this video very helpful. I wondered, though, how important (or rather, unimportant) it is for you to break that 180 degree rule while filming the ceremony. Some of your Glidecam shots with the Sigma 50mm were taken from behind the bridal line, while Rachel’s and the Sony FS100 static cameras are positioned in front.
Matt, I just want to say, Bravo! The videos are professional, instructional, and entertaining. My daughter is just getting into wedding photography, and I will be doing second person stuff. I'm entertaining thoughts of a drone, and video. But I have to say, you have blown me away...and leave me overwhelmed. Very good, and many thanks.
My first wedding film is tomorrow! Wish me luck :D This was so helpful! I only have two cameras, and this really helped with angle ideas for me. And I will try to double mic the groom with my saramonic wireless lav mic and another Zoom h1 lav mic. Unfortunately I only have my mom or sister to take with me for the ceremony and they don't really know how to use a camera, so we'll make it work. Thanks for the help :D
Thank you Matt! You are so nice for sharing your experience with people. A lot from what I learned was thanks to you! Do you happen to have any video showing your workflow on how you maintain your cameras clean and the moment of organizing/packing before heading to the wedding? All the best for you!
Thanks for these videos Matt! I have my first wedding next month so trying to get as much planning in as possible! Excited but the ceremony is the bit that has me the most nervous!!
I am guessing that having a cooperative photographer is key. I can see where the photographer would also want to have prime access for when they are walking down the aisle and could get in the way
Hey Matt! Love this video! Do you have or are you planning on making a video about filming a ceremony as a single shooter? Ceremony is my biggest struggle
Same! I use a 70-300mm lens for the whole ceremony. As the bridal party enters I try to get shots of the groom. For the beginning, I'm up at the front to get the bride walking down the aisle. I try to switch around to the groom, but (depending on the setup) at 70mm focal length I usually get an extreme closeup that isn't super usable. From there I walk around the edges and behind them while being mindful of when the important parts are happening. Then, I'm at the back for the kiss and exit. My deliverable is a 5-6min highlight film, so it works for that. In no way would I be able to deliver a full ceremony cut. Long term I want to buy a B camera and have a stable tripod shot throughout. There's probably a better way to go about it, but that's what I've figured so far. Hopefully that was at least somewhat helpful!
We're filming our first wedding next Sunday so I can't thank you guys enough for this video. It has helped me immensely (and helped calm my nerves). Thank you
thanks again for these videos matt! I'm actually shooting my first wedding this saturday ha. so hopefully part 4 comes out before then XD they've been a great source of info!
I've always been taught to have at least one shot down the middle and the second camera at least on the bride. But I actually really like the look at the footage with two coming in at angles. And this setup you had two Shooters and four cameras, what would you do if you had two cameras for one videographer? Would you still have two at the sides coming in at an angle, or one down the center and one at an angle?
Hey Matt, quick question - from 12:27 onwards, where is Rachel standing when capturing the guests faces and couple's speeches? Especially when all the groomsmen and bridesmaids are at the front!
I’ve shot second shooter for my husband for years at weddings, when we did mostly photography he mostly used his shots, very rarely used mine. What I shot was mostly insurance to make sure we didn’t miss important ceremony moments, like the first kiss or look. Now that we’ve moved away from wedding photography and into videography, he uses the majority of my shots now. It seems I pick up on things that the bride would appreciate and I’m apparently the queen of interviews, and asking emotional questions. Muahahaha! Lol Loving your channel. (Also this is our vlog channel, our professional channel is Stephen Burton Media)
How did Rachel didn't get you in her frame if you were also walking in the aisle behind the bride? I have trouble with getting my second shooter in my frame.. I hope you can help to figure this out for my next wedding. Thanks
Matt, My wife and I are extremely thankful for your wedding filmmaker tutorials. You have truly changed the way we shoot weddings! Now to my question, have you figured out a way to combat the way the Sony A7s II names it's video files? Depending on the number of A7s II's we have, I could have 2-5 clips with the same name of C0001.mp4. It seems counterintuitive to have the camera start back at 1 every time you format a card. I have it set on Series and not Reset, so I am not sure if I may be missing something? It would be extremely helpful if it continued the file numbering system even with a fresh card. Thanks in advance, and keep up the amazing videos!
Thanks so much Kyle! I get around this by copying all my video files into separate folders. So I'll have one folder "A7Sii card 1" and another "a7sii card 2". I import everything into Premiere and organize it by who shot it. I don't believe there is an option in camera to make the file numbers sequential otherwise, unfortunately.
Do you usually export a full edit of the ceremony in HD, or 4K? I would imagine a 30-40 minute long 4K video, even compressed down, would be gigantic and freak out the couple.
Hey Matt! Do you use on-camera mics when shooting the couple getting ready and walking in the field? I shoot with a Rode Pro mounted on top of my camera but when I have it on my gimble it gets annoying, esp if I want to get low angles.
I noticed your using high apertures, F14, Why not record at 120fps? And edit it to be 60Fps? And lower the aperture to say F8 or F10? Is it because it will let in more light?
Great tips! I saw the end product, and it was excellent. During the procession when you were in front of the couple as they exited, werent you in the photographer's shot?
Hey Matt, when you use the battery grip on the camera, did you ever notice an unstable movement with your footage? Because I used a battery grip with the 16-35 and noticed that it was top heavy and I ended up getting a lot of bouncy footage. Come to find out, the battery grip and the camera connected together had a little bit of play but everything was as tight as it could be. The footage is fixable if you slow it down. I'm just wondering because I'm scared to use the battery grip in the future. Just wondering if you had any tips.
+Jimmy h hey Jimmy! I use the official Sony Battery grip and haven’t noticed any play between the grip and camera. Bummer to hear yours has an issue :-/
Amazing everything - the teaser, the film, the BTS…thank you so much for sharing this! Can’t wait for your editing course. One question: did you loop around/behind the altar and change lenses for those Sigma 50 shots of Mal during the vows, or did Rachel have another camera with her on her side?
Matt WhoisMatt Johnson who pitched the idea of making it that short? Did you give them the full ceremony as well? I've done two weddings so far, both final vids ended up being roughly 30-40 mins. I would love to trim things down to 6 or so, but they always insist on the full ceremony so I end up doing a wierd hybrid of a music video and documentary style.
Great content!! How you get slowmotion in 4K with the A7S II? I saw it all the time in your weddingfilms. Keep going the great work and here for us! You're both amazing. :-)
Hey Matt. Ive watched all 3 videos and maybe Im missing it, but Im still confused on how many cameras youre using to film the ceremony? I cant tell if its 3 or 4? Do you have 1 or 2 cameras that have the 70-200mm lens on them? Is Rachel switching to the 70-200 while the groom is saying his vows so shes ready for the Bride to say hers? Then does she change back to the 50mm? And when? Sorry, a lot of questions. :)
+openg8 hey! We filmed with 3 cameras. 2 with 70-200s. And I roam with s third. Rachel’s on s 50mm for the Bride walking in then switches to a 70-200 for the rest of the ceremony.
Absolutely loving your channel, just stumbled on it, while researching/prepping for a few travel videos I'm making in the near future. So cool to see how other videographer's go about their day. I have a couple quick questions, if you don't mind. If you do, then I'll just unsub, cry and then move on, but if you find the time, then awesome! 1. Do you find during the Ceremony (walking down the isle with the bride and her father), that the photographer's typically dislike that? 2. When placing the lav's on the inner coat (I usually leave them on the outer), do you find you have to edit out a lot of rubbing on the mic, or do the cover's counter-act that? 3. How often do bride's and groom's typically order a Ceremony Video down the road? Cheers and thanks for all the great info! You deserve a lot more subs than you have!
Hey Matt, sorry for asking you again but it looks like the bride didn't have a microphone during the ceremony. Was the sound good enough from the groom? Thanks for helping me out again :)
@@whoismatt Matt! Are you in LA by chance? I have a friend getting married and I would be shooting it if I wasn't attending. Would you and your bad ass wife be interested? Happy to shoot over my number or email in DM if you guys would be down.
Hi Matt if I have two cameras for a ceremony what lenses would you choose to put on them? One will remain up the back of the isle and the other moving about. Thanks Ashleigh
+Ellyse Salter hey! I used to film weddings solo. A lot of it comes down to making sure your angle on a tripod looks good so you can roam around and get other creative angles easily.
Hi Matt, love your work, totally inspiring. Just a quick question when you make a wedding movie is it the highlights we see that you are creating (i.e. 5 minute movie) or do you generally produce a longer version of the wedding too. if so how long does your Wedding productions run for? thanks
+Kevin Thomas thanks Kevin! That’s correct, what you see on here is what I deliver. If you go to my site Filmstrong.com you can see all the collections I offer couples.
"I have another microphone for you because I live in fear... constant fear." 😂 You are too funny, Matt. I love all your videos. So helpful and also funny
What's up man thank for help me with my other question. I just have one more for you your final product you give you customer how long is it or do you have a video that I can look at thanks again for all your help
how do you find the glide cam for switching out lenses and rebalancing? I change lenses 24/7 so im debating if it's worthwhile to get one. Thanks! great and helpful video! Callum
@@whoismatt awesome, thanks for the tip! I may have to buy one in the future! Do you have an affiliate link for a glidecam so i can contribute to the channel?
I have a question! After you attach the microphones to the groom and minister, do you just leave them rolling/recording for the 15 minutes before the wedding or rely on them to switch them on just as the ceremony starts?
@@whoismatt this was a huge of my worries, since now I have very limited audio, (minimalism) lol I got the new rode mic go II and since it has 2 transceivers and 1 receiver, I was wondering what was the best,. In this case should I put one on the wedding officiant and the groom? thoughts? Opinion? I don’t have like the backups that you do lol 😝 which would be A M A Z I N G. But for now that’s all I got
How does the a7sii handle flash photography going on during the ceremony? Does that interfere with the video, especially indoors? I think I saw an a7sii wedding video with some bright half frames flickering in and out during a ceremony, and I figured maybe you've dealt with it at some point.
Hey Scott! The a7sii, like all cmos sensor cameras that I used, has flickering from photographers flashes. I just ignore it and keep shooting lol. When I edit I try to cut around it a bit, but it doesn’t bother me much.
hey matt! quick question! so for the ceremony do you just mic the groom and get the brides audio off of the grooms mic? Just curious as i generally have always had the chance to connect directly to the sound board but would like to know in case i need to use lav mics! thanks matt!
Hey, just a quick question about the camera Rachel is holding in the begginning: I know it's an a7sIi with an 85mm, but what's the adaptor? looks like there is something between the lens and the camera? Am I right? :)
Hey Matt! Do you currently still use a 70-200 during the ceremony? Thus far I've gotten away with my Sigma art 24-105, but I'm thinking of getting either. 24-70 and a 135mm to switch to if I need the reach, or jus getting a 70-200mm. Thoughts ?
Matt its amazing. Just cant figure out, why you dont make some tutorials for money? Every well knowed filmmaker selling their know how... I love you for sharing this with us, becouse im hobby filmmaker and it gives me a lot of knowladge!! Sorry for my english ;)

Hey! Correct the bride didn’t have a mic, just the groom and officiant. Worked great
Great video man. Question, did you provide the sparklers for the wedding sendoff or did they? If you did, can you link where?
Wedding coordinator provided those. I don’t know the brand but I do know you want the extra long low smoke versions for weddings
@@whoismatt got it thanks Matt. Appreciate you keep up the great work
@@whoismatt Matt!
Hey Ashleigh! I would use one 70-200 for the fixed camera and one 24 or 50mm for the roaming camera
autolike my dude. you da best. 11pm EST and was about to sleep but nahhhh. gots to watch my main man Matt
+Carlo Timothy haha thanks Carlo!
Do you have tips if you’re taping solo, but have two cameras?
+Ellyse Salter hey! I used to film weddings solo. A lot of it comes down to making sure your angle on a tripod looks good so you can roam around and get other creative angles easily.
awesome stuff!!!!
+isaacmijangos thanks Isaac!
Please to be making video on how you edit. Thankyou very much please.
Thanks! Planning on one in the future!
Hi Matt,
love your work, totally inspiring.
Thanks Matt, appreciate how much you share, truly inspired.
"I have another microphone for you because I live in fear... constant fear." 😂 You are too funny, Matt. I love all your videos. So helpful and also funny
Thanks Jenny!
Thank you, thank you!!
+Sean Openshaw thanks Sean!
Awesome tips!
+Lyubo Yanev thanks Lyubo!
What's up man thank for help me with my other question. I just have one more for you your final product you give you customer how long is it or do you have a video that I can look at thanks again for all your help
+Jakes Andrew hey! The videos are here on my channel. This couple’s video ended up being about 5 minutes Long. :)
is that all you give your client
You can see the lengths of videos I offer on my wedding site: www.filmstrong.com
Great video!May i ask why sometimes you use 24p,and some times you use 30p?
+戚悦生 hey! I explain why in this video: th-cam.com/video/adgLbURVgZU/w-d-xo.html
thank you so much!
how do you find the glide cam for switching out lenses and rebalancing? I change lenses 24/7 so im debating if it's worthwhile to get one. Thanks! great and helpful video! Callum
I usually just use the 24 and 50mm and the glidecam handles both of those with minimal adjustments.
@@whoismatt awesome, thanks for the tip! I may have to buy one in the future! Do you have an affiliate link for a glidecam so i can contribute to the channel?
Thanks! Glidecam is linked as an affiliate link on my Kit page linked in the video description. :)
I have a question! After you attach the microphones to the groom and minister, do you just leave them rolling/recording for the 15 minutes before the wedding or rely on them to switch them on just as the ceremony starts?
Hey! Yes I just leave them rolling, I don't trust anyone to remember to start recording.
Completely agree haha!
So how do you synchronize all your clips to be in time with the audio when you edit?
Sorry if I’m like 3 years late. But do you not mic up the bride? is the audio coming from the grooms mic? If so that is amazing!
This was from the groom’s mic. But since this video I now mic the bride as well. :)
@@whoismatt this was a huge of my worries, since now I have very limited audio, (minimalism) lol
I got the new rode mic go II and since it has 2 transceivers and 1 receiver, I was wondering what was the best,.
+Juarez 95 hey! That’s right, I just mic the groom and officiant, as well as plug into the sound board.
Hey, just a quick question about the camera Rachel is holding in the begginning: I know it's an a7sIi with an 85mm, but what's the adaptor? looks like there is something between the lens and the camera? Am I right? :)
Hey! That's an A-mount Sony 135mm lens with the Sony A-mount to e-mount adapter between the lens and camera.
That's an odd choice, why A-mount instead of FE?
Because Sony doesn't have an equivalent 135mm in e-mount.
Hey Matt! Do you currently still use a 70-200 during the ceremony? Thus far I've gotten away with my Sigma art 24-105, but I'm thinking of getting either. 24-70 and a 135mm to switch to if I need the reach, or jus getting a 70-200mm. Thoughts ?
Hey Dan! Yup I still use a 70-200. It’s the best for ceremonies! You’ll be thankful when you get stuck a long ways away in a church balcony etc
Matt its amazing. Just cant figure out, why you dont make some tutorials for money? Every well knowed filmmaker selling their know how... I love you for sharing this with us, becouse im hobby filmmaker and it gives me a lot of knowladge!! Sorry for my english ;)
+Martin Tellinger thanks Martin! Not planning on charging right now. :)
