    Hi Matt,
    I'm loving your work my brother. Your gift is opening so many doors for you. I think you could be shooting with a Betamax in the wilderness and your business would still blow up. You just have the right attitude, period. And nothing can stop a person with the right attitude. Add skills on top of that it its a wrap. Should I use multiple establishing shots? Or just one? And if I use multiple establishing shots, should I start with close up shots of things and THEN hit em with the WIDE shot or what? I want my video to flow. Got hired to film a catering company launch party. They’re having a brunch. Need ideas. Please give insight. Also what comes AFTER the establishing shot??

    • @whoismatt

      I check the weather forecast and oftentimes the day before or the day after the wedding will look similar. So sometimes I film on either day, whichever matches the wedding day more.

    • @whoismatt

      +reanofilms hey! Nope, no extra charge for this. Often I drive in a day early for the wedding, so I have time to film the establishing shots early and not be rushed. The couples are cool with it (when I even tell them lol).

      +Reggae Jones hey! Yes, I always have a second shooter. They are usually shooting another A7Sii, or a Sony FS700, or even Canon C100 sometimes. Whichever they have. :)

  • @matthewleemoore
    @matthewleemoore 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Matt, after shooting my first wedding with my new a7s ii's (2's?) (II's?) (dos'?) I definitely don't understand the internal stabilization vs. lens stabilization vs. when I punch in does it screw up the stabilization? My shots turned out much shakier than I had hoped.
    Looking through the interwebs and can't find anything. Would love to hear your thoughts and get your take on using IS lenses, when to use Steady Shot, and how it's effected by zooming in/APS-C mode. Willing to pay in tacos for your thoughts...

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha yes! Tacos! To help clarify a bit, when you punch in to check focus, that shouldn't affect the Image Stabilization. It works regardless of your lens because it's in camera. When you use a dead lens with adapter (such as a Nikon) it uses 3 axis stabilization in camera. When you use an official Sony lens it uses 5 axis in camera by taking data from the lens too. This is of course even smoother. I shoot with a mix of lenses, and as long as I don't move the camera too fast, everything ends up pretty smooth. Hope that helps!

  • @markshirley01

    really useful tips Matt thanks - I'm looking to buy a beholder DS1 for my Nikon D750 for stabalizer shots - does the Glidecam take long to balance - would love to buy one but keep seeing comments buy people who just can't balance them.

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +mark shirley thanks Mark! The Glidecam takes around 10 seconds to balance which is a major win. Balancing it isn't that hard once you understand how it works. There is definitely a learning curve but the results are worth it.

    First of all, thank you for all of these tutorials. Secondly, what glydecam do you recommend? Besides cost, what are the advantages of the glydecam versus a gimbal stabilizer like a Ronin?

      +Yabui Ent thanks! I use a Glidecam HD-4000. I'll be making a video soon comparing the Glidecam and Ronin. :)

      +Matt WhoisMatt Johnson awesome. that was my question too! I've heard it can be difficult to see the screen, particularly shooting in s-log, and even with gamma display assist, would you recommend external monitor use on a Ronin or is just too awkward for this kind of shoot? /have you found the movable screen works OK with these?!

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lisa Whelan It's easy to see the screen on Glidecam because the screen is usually eye level. For the Ronin you basically NEED to have a monitor.

      +Matt WhoisMatt Johnson Thanks Matt, that makes sense. I absolutely love this series you're putting together, it is ridiculously helpful.
      I've been shooting an odd bit here and there but want to get into the business side of things (primarily wedding videography) full time. I would love some suggestions on staple lenses you use/would recommend for the a 7sii for wedding videos, or your idea of the absolute basic requirements for shooting videos. For example, I probably don't NEED a glide cam right off the bat, and a monopod may suffice, once I start earning more, I could invest then.
      Basically I'm wondering where to invest starting out. I'm changing systems and saving for the camera itself and have a €2000-€3000 max budget left over for 'everything else'. lenses, batteries, SD cards, stabilization etc. I'm just wondering what you consider the bare necessities/good investments starting out that will produce high quality videos and in turn yield a profit for future investment in the kit (into things like the phantom etc things you don't necessarily need off the bat but which are nice to have and will up production value in the long run.)
      I feel my main investment should be good glass. Perhaps a wide (16-35) a zoom (70-200?!) and a 50mm prime. I'd really appreciate any recommendations you have on this. Whether through a reply here or video in future. Thanks for these videos! Lisa. :)

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So glad its helpful! I would definitely start off with good lenses and a monopod, maybe a slider if you wanna get fancy. :) The Sony 16-35mm f4 is really nice, I love mine. A good 50mm and 70-200 sound great too. I'm pretty much always either on my 16-35, 24, or 50mm. The 70-200 comes out during the ceremony.
      Don't be in a huge rush to get everything at once. I built up my gear over many years, and I found that if I bought a ton of stuff at once I didn't always learn it and appreciate it. By buying things slowly you force yourself to get good at each piece of gear as you go. Hope that helps!

    From the perspective of the establishing shots, the wedding venue seems a bit unattractive. The only piece that looks appealing is the ceremony spot. Some of your shots really help to find the more creative or attractive angles at the site, but the rest I find not so great looking (not your shots). I run into this all the time at weddings. It's really difficult to find an event that looks beautiful no matter where you look. Do you and your wife ever have conversations about a venue's aesthetics (or lack thereof) when it comes to figuring out your shots? For an amateur wedding videographer like me, an event that has no aesthetics is harmful to the creative flow for the day.

      I liked the shot you got through the tall grass at the beginning of the video. It's a beautiful shot. I can't say I would have considered that. Did you add additional audio to that in post? or is that straight from whatever you were recording at the time?

    Hello Matt, the concept of establishing shots (ES) was invented, when people in the 1900s started to figure out, how film making basically works. So in adapting one concept of the Theater, they startet with ES to have a classic overview of the upcoming scene. The first movies happened to be just one longe ES.
    Come on. Superman vs. Batman didn't work out because of missing ES. This seems to me a rather pour analysis. I think, it didn't work out because the story was just crap and the fight between the Super-Tech-Guy Batman vs. Super-Power-Guy Superman was just unbelievable stupid and made no sense at all. Just little boys with toys.
    My suggestion: use an establishing shot, if your story / your scene need one. To be honest, showing the ranch of ones wedding just pleases the people watching themselves get married, when they see the video later: "Look darling, how nice the day at our wedding has been. What a beautiful ranch we had and just look once again the gorgeous wheather bla, bla, bla". For all the other viewers it's most likely totally boring.
    The Ranch Shot seems to make sense, because your work, of covering the wedding, likes to get paid. Offering a "perfect memory" just works in videos like that very well.
    So I would suggest not to make it a must do, but rather make it a maybe or why not, talking about the next project. But please, do not make a big film language deal out of it. What about a simple rule: If it helps the story you like to showtell, then do it, make your ES and edit into the video. If you don't need one, just forget it. If you guys want to make a video just think of this: What is it, I want the viewers to experience and feel. If you are able to find some kind of answer to that question, start shooting all the interesting things happening, that fit in this answer and shoot them in the most interesting way you guys can think of.
    Ones I made a wedding video for a friend, when he got married. They hat a funny little dog at the time. So I decided to shoot the hole thing through the "eyes" of the little funny dog. The establishing shot (ES), if you wanna call it that, was just a half wide shot of the little dog. When it started to run, I switched perspective to the perspective of the little dog and off I went, the wedding movie started. So you see, it doesn't make sense to claim a rule or a "this is the way you must do it and I'm the one telling you"-thing. Just ask yourself, what is it you want to show, what are the expectations of the audience and, last but not least, who pays for your work. If it's a client give them a great drone ES. It's quite often, that they might like it, but it's not really the way towards great film making. Best Jan

    Hiya, I love your videos, just wondered, What if on the actual wedding day the weather is totally different? Say no sun & rainy, would that then ruin all your previous days sunshine shots? As I assume the couples memory of the day needs to match up, so how do you work that?

    Good advise, most of the weddings I do I have to get everything on the fly. Usually most of the decoration is put up last minute and you might end up shooting the same shots twice. That extra day is even better if you have the couple willing to walk around in casual wear for the video. ALL ABOUT THAT B-ROLL SON!
