    Mr. Saturday Night Trailer - Directed by Billy Crystal and starring Billy Crystal, David Paymer, Jerry Orbach, Ron Silver, Jason Marsden. Buddy Young was the comic's comic, beloved by everyone. Now, playing to miniscule crowds in nursing homes, it seems like everybody but Buddy realizes that he should retire. As Buddy looks for work in show business, he realizes that the rest of the world has forgotten the golden days of Buddy Young, and that there just may not be room in the business for an old comic like himself.

    That "regular drummer" line shouldn't have been that funny. But it was, because Billy knows how to deliver a line.

    This film did so poorly but true fans know the real value of this film. This is such a wonderful story and the cast, right down to his family members, were all perfect! This is one of my favorite films of all time. I think it's because I can identify with this film as more than a story on screen. Such a great film and I feel honored to have had the opportunity to see it!

      Why wasn’t there ever a Mr Saturday Night 2?

    • @RumbleFish69
      @RumbleFish69 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@paleo704 Well, I would first say that it's because not every film needs a sequel. In fact, any real movie fan knows that sequels, for the most part, serve no real purpose outside of capitalizing monetarily on the success of the first film. Only in rare instances, as with "The Godfather Part 2" does a sequel actually move the story along. However to answer your question more specifically, the reasons this film had no sequel was, first, because this film's lack of box-office success did not warrant one. And second, is one that youd know if you saw this movie, and that's because there was nowhere left for the story to go. Again, some movies just don't need a sequel.

    I can't believe this film cost 43 million to make, and only pulled in 13 million. I guess it didn't matter for Crystal though, since City Slickers cost 26 milion and made almost 200 million. Still, a great movie though. I don't get why it bombed. I guess the majority of people were expecting something else.

    This was Billy Crystal's passion project that he wrote starred and directed. If you get to a certain level of success in Hollywood the studios will green-light your passion project and it doesn't always work out, like when John Travolta made Battlefield Earth or Garth Brooks made the Chris Gaines album. Billy Crystal likes to think of himself as an elder statesmen of show business, even when he was a younger guy in the 90's he thought of himself that way and in this movie he plays in to that role. His character is a stereotypical old school showbiz Catskills style comedian, but his jokes aren't funny, he's mean to everyone and has no socially redeeming qualities. That would be a funny premise if it was intentional, like Andy Kaufman's Tony Clifton character, but it's not. Instead of a love story between Crystal and a romantic partner the movie features an uncomfortable brotherly love story between Crystal and his brother who's also his manager. Billy Crystal's character is extremely frugal and the most memorable line in the film is when he yells at his new agent played by Helen Hunt for canceling some of his winter shows and he screams at her "You stole my winter!" in a crowded restaurant, oh and Billy Crystal is in bad old person makeup for most of the movie, so picture that. The big happy ending of Mr Saturday Night is this old hack comedian gets a small film role which might revive his career and he reconciles with his brother who he was mean to for no reason the entire movie, it's not much of a payoff. Unless you are a masochist and like watching really bad movies do not see this film.

      What you negatively described as the premise for Buddy Young Jr.’s (Billy Crystal) character is exactly what I believe the movie was going for - how someone’s ego gets in the way of family, business, and general reality. I think you viewed this movie expecting it to be overtly funny and showy which, I agree, is much of what this trailer makes it out to be, but I don’t think that’s what Crystal was going for, nor do I think you’re giving it a fair say (respectfully). Don’t get me wrong, you’re absolutely entitled to your own opinion and I don’t expect you to agree with me, but there are some pretty valuable life lessons throughout (“you’re where you are because of WHO you are”, family sticks by you through the thick and thin, etc.) that I believe make the movie absolutely worth watching. Also, I feel the comedy is intentionally supposed to grow old/stale as the film progresses to give the audience the sense that Buddy, as he has proven time and time again, has the ability to take it too far and make it unfunny and eventually loathsome. Yet again though, I agree with you that the movie is far more involved than what is depicted in this trailer and could be somewhat misleading. Nonetheless, I think every movie trailer uses this element of marketing to reel people in, so it comes to no surprise.

      Its a rough comparison, but I remember watching the first 30 minutes of the movie (didn't finish it, it was afternoon cable tv movie), but I had a general sense it was about a comedian that took things to far with his material and neglected his family over time.
      It make me think of late night shows that try to be funny with their techniques and bits, but it slowly becomes noticeable and played out in a way.
      It reminded me of Jimmy Fallon's Show.

      @Loomismusic 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@DDRhappiness17 Jimmy Fallon is an interesting comparison. Talented at music but never funny in his own right Jimmy's one move on SNL was to break the 4th wall with the audience by giggling which some people found charming. Now he's an older man who like Billy Crystal's charachter seems tragic, completely buck broken by NBC, and by all accounts a terrible person to work for and still not funny.
