I've had the 40 volt strike master with the 7 inch auger for 5 years now it's great, fast and it's never let us down .
I would just like to add that the bigger ridgid octane with 1,300 lbs per inch is a fantastic option. On my 3rd year with mine with a 9ah battery.
I bought a used hand auger off of craigslist for $20. Made an adapter for it and I use the rigid with 5 amp hr battery and drilled more holes than you could count with no issues. I even carry the small battery for back up and the 2 amp hr had no issues with drilling hole after hole. I have no idea what your issues are but, to everybody wondering, with sharp blades and a decent drill you'll have no problems.
Great video, I was just out on lake Manitoba today in very similar conditions. Love how you mentioned the hardness of cold ice, it really does make a difference, just ask anyone who skates on outdoor ice how much quicker it dulls blades. I used a 2804 with a drill adaptor and 12" extension on an 8" swede bore and it worked, but not quite as nice as that Light Flite. I got the 2804 with 2 5ah batteries and an impact for $499 at KMS tools in Calgary recently. Keep the videos coming, I'm looking forward to the next one!
Thanks for the encouragement and watching the video! Happy fishing! Waiting on some drills and batteries to show up in stock for more videos!
I live at the bottom of the ice belt and the drills do just fine. I used to use the Milwaukee 2804 but recently got their mud mixer and love it.
I’ve been looking at these options after struggling to open up holes with a hand auger in hard ice. This is the best video someone’s posted in regards to these products.
For the money required to drill these holes buy a gas powered auger... I've used handheld ones on hard ice takes forever. With that being said my buddy owns a 300-400$ gas auger and it blows holes like it's nothing. 100% the way to go run out of gas? Fill it up. Run out of battery you're screwed. Batteries aren't good In the cold either. Start the auger up before you leave the house run it as soon as you get to the ice and start it up every thirty minutes when it's severely cold but we just leave the auger in the tent with the heater keeping it warm and she starts up every time.
Got myself the big milwaukee tool only for $100 because I already had batteries. The biggest thing for me and why I recommend it is because the cold doesn't affect the battery. I've had it out on contact with the ice all day in 5 degree weather and it still had full charge and drilled 24" immediately with no problem. Can't recommend them enough for the batteries.
We're you running the 4ah battery?
@@FREEDOM-bk4rv I use the standard xc 5.0 batteries

Great video, wow! Another interesting video would be comparing some "compatible" non-OEM batteries vs OEM batteries. Capacity and cold temp operation comes to mind. There are probably tons of room temp comparisons. Hopefully that may be a little less expensive than this first one, haha.
Thanks for comparing all of these. I have a Ridgid 18v NON-brushless gen 5 version of that drill which I have been using for 3 winters now with a 4ah battery. I attach it to an old manual swede-bore auger with the drill adaptor bit. I can get about 30 or so holes in about a foot of ice which is typical where I am. It is more then enough for my needs and definitely a cheap entry level setup which is lightyears better than manually drilling. One thing to note is that its recommended to be using 6ah and above for Ridgid cuz if you use a smaller battery like my 4ah the internal safety voltage drop thing shuts off your drill sometimes and its annoying. Watch videos of people using 9ah and they swiss cheese the whole lake. Either way the Metabo looks awesome as a future purchase but its about 4x more than my current setup which gets me by just fine.
I picked up a rigid 18v brushless and couldn't even drill 4 holes in about 18 inches on 1 2ah battery with an old swede-bore. Had new blades too.
@@joshuaireland5181 was it the R86116 model? or R86115? The 6 at the end stipulates the more higher torque drill. Also for sure the 2ah battery wont get you much. You need 4ah or higher so it won't cut out on you.
I bought my"Fuel" for$350 Canadian. Came with 2 5ah batteries.
It worked great for two years. Last year I drilled it into a shoal and wreaked the drive gears. Milwaukee repaired it free of charge after nearly two years. Took two months unfortunately..
Still works great. I use it with a cheep 8" hand auger. Max 24" ice here though.
I bought the clam adapter after the first year. Too hard on the wrists.
That’s awesome. I love Milwaukee they are a great brand!
Great video this really helps people save some time and money trying to figure out which drills cut it! Thanks!
I've watched this one about 4 times, hands down the best review I've seen. Thanks!!
Great comparison. I am just getting into ice fishing and am looking to buy an auger. Lots of good info. Keep up the great videos...
Thought you were gonna be biased at first lol. But by the end of the video I learned which auger to buy and learned I was no longer buying a Milwaukee drill. Thank you. What an awesome review.
Haha thank you so much for watching and commenting! Things have been crazy with work but I’m working on a version 2 of this test. Trying to be as impartial as possible. I don’t care what the brand is as long as it does what I need the best.
Best bang for your buck I think is the kobalt, I've been using one with a 7" laser and an 8" Nero auger for a couple years and it's never tripped the power protection on.
I really like this video, it's a far cry from really scientific, but it's by far the best I've seen! On the 2804 I thought with the pistol bit you might be triggering the anti rotation/anti wrist breaking/maximum frustration sensor. Because your experience didn't match my lite-flite/ 2804 experience. But then i saw your experience with the lite -flite pretty well matched my own. And i think the real MVP here is the lite-flite auger!
Also FWIW I have way better luck with the 2804 ditching the brace and holding onto the battery. Also if the batteries are getting long in the tooth, forget it. A fresh 5ah cuts like a knife though. Also the auger isn't nearly as hard on the drill as mixing mortar....
If i hadn't been invested in the fuel ecosystem since they were the only batteries worth buying I'd take a long look at that Hitachi Power Tool/ Metabo. It performed really well.
It was an amazing video and provided great information. If you don't already have one of the brig drills I would say it's a good option to have a dedicated tool but if you do happen to have a drill getting the lite flite bit is an exceptional offer for sure.
Thank you for this video!!! I just picked up a 40v auger and love it!! But it’s great to see these drills in action, with different bits. Very informational for folks looking to may the investment. Well done sir!!! And I personally would love to see a head to head with the HPT and strike king!!
And this is why I keep my 2 old gas auagers around.... early season on 12 inches or less of ice I use my drill auger... but once I can drive out on the ice and don't have to worry about keeping everything light weight...u bring one of the gas augers out
I am with you! Once the ice gets thick where the ATV gets out the Jiffy propane is on the ATV, no worry about keeping batteries warm either!!
Awesome comparison! Great job! Can't wait to see what you do next!
I got the 8" Pistol bit w/Milwaukee Fuel drill and 5ah battery.the ice thickness here in New England is not quite like where you are.1-2ft thick at the most. Just waiting for the ice to thicken up to be safe. Cant wait to use this new auger setup.
I also got the Clam drill adapter plate to keep the drill chucked to the auger bit and it has a Jiffy style throttle setup which makes it easy to use.
Excellent video- keep up the good work!
When you tighten your chucks give a quarter turn back after and it will lock the chuck
Milwaukee has a locking chuck, tighten it all the way then turn it back 1 click.. I've never had mine come loose after locking it
Thanks for the time and effort, and yes I do want that
My Dewalt 20vmax hammer drill w 5 amphr (owned this prior for other reasons) worked fantastic all last season w the pistol bit and never stopped. None of my gas powered friends even took their rigs out.
Great video. Thanks for putting this together, I'm on the fence on what direction to go for auger. This was very helpful! Subbed!
The 2804 I bought was $179 (US) at northern. That’s the best price I’ve seen. The hammer-drill transmission is the most heavy-duty. Anything less than 750in-lb drill will end up overheating anyway. I’ve used mine with K-Drill and Lite-flite auger. No problems. The Metabo with 36v source needs 1/2 the current and therefore less heat generated (this is critical in battery operation). I don’t know anything about the transmission in the Metabo. In the short-term, it works well. The chuck is also critical. Milwaukee is probably the best of them.
Probably the best comparison video out there. Even though I knew strikemaster would win. Been using them for 30 years and I think they know what they're doing. Good job and keep up the good work. Praying for you to do well.
great test, love the side by side comparison, makes it clear which one or two is the way to go
You may be on to something with that cold ice be much harder to drill. I just moved up to the 8" Eskimo pistol bit from the 6" and my Ridgid R86115 was binding the first couple times but last time was notably warmer at -17C and I did not experience any binding. I was thinking it was because the auger had worked in a bit and is drilling more efficiently but I hadn't even thought of the cold ice. 6" has been no issue for the ridgid or a dewalt dcb777 unless the batteries get cold.
Great comparison video! Really appreciate the comparison and the work you put in.
I was wondering the same thing, because when he said he had trouble with his rigid drill I was a little surprised because I run a rigid drill (not sure which model#) with a lite flite (I have both the 8 and 6”) and it has worked fine, I also bought the jiffy bit designed for drills (torch? I don’t remember what it was called) for opening holes in ice that might be dirty because it has a chipper blade and my rigid drill has run that fine so far as well… but I am a bit of a fair weather fisherman, I usually don’t go on days where it’s colder than -20ish.
Great video! 2y later and I still appreciate you making this!
Ive had the Milwaukee 2804 with my 8 inch pistol bit for two years now still has the original blade that came with it and it still cuts like butter
Great information, thanks for doing a side by side comparison so we don't have to waste money.. I've already got a 2804 in my garage and I've been looking at getting a pistol bit, figured I'd upgrade from my propane Eskimo. I bought that because i have a good sized wheel house i fish out of and gas augers really stink it up in there and i quickly found out that propane augers really aren't much better but now I'm going start looking at the strikemaster instead.
Phenomenal video!! Lite Flite all the way. Bough the first run LF. We’ll over 2K holes, still cuts like new. I run the first run Ridgid Octane 1300 in lb drill. Beast of a set up
Great video Devin. I've done several auger videos myself so I know the work involved, it's not so easy. I would have like to have seen the Ridgid octane in the mix just to see how it compared. I've done videos with 10" augers and it's a beast. Unfortunately Ridgid discontinued it. Also battery size makes a BIG difference. Going to the 9ah on my Ridgid Octane was eye opening. People think capacity only means just that, but the larger batteries will also give you more torque and RPM. The great part about this whole thing though is all the options now available to everyone. We as anglers are winners. Strikemaster needs to offer a 10" version of the Lite Flite they are losing a lot of sales to the ION G2 which I also own and is a great unit.
Larger battery died not give you more torque or RPM. Voltage (12,24,36) and gears determines your torque.
Larger ah batteries last longer so you may keep top torque longer. But they don't increase it.
One of the best electric auger/drill reviews to date. And I watch them all. I have a 6" lite flite with the milwauke fuel hammer drill. Also have a 8" orange nils flyte that is fast but nothing compared to the strikemaster lite flite. Was trying to decide on a new 8" flyte to pair w my milwaukee when targeting bigger fish. Think it will be the lite flite.
Great video! You sold me man we don't have that much ice here but I've been using a hand auger for years and moving around to find the fish and drilling all those holes kills me by the end of the day
That darn chuck on the metabo and superior warranty on the Milwaukee is reason enough to go with it!
Thank you for the great video. This video is helping me shop for next year.
I'm in construction so i have all the milwaukee drills all i bought was an adaptor for my hand auger with mora blades and was able to drill thru 30" of ice no problems
I think the Dewalt DCD999 Flex Volt really needs to be part of the conversation. Paired with the Strikemaster, it eats like crazy for days.
Thanks for watching and commenting! I couldn’t get it in time for this video due to shortages etc I am trying to make a video with the largest batteries from the top 3 drills. The dcd999 the 2804 the 40v Makita and the 36v Metabo. Having trouble getting the batteries and the makita setup.
Yes. The DCD999 absolutely eats the ice here in North West Montana. The DCD999 paired with a 5-8AH battery with the 8" pistol Bit is all you need. I've drilled through 24+ inches of ice with this set up.
I agree, I was a little disappointed to not see the Dewalt 20v flex in the lineup. I also wanted to know which batteries were being used with the milwaukee drills as I have both and have nothing but problems trying to drill ice. Maybe I missed it idk, but overall a really great video! I bought a pistol bit and didn't like it, so I returned it and went with a LiteFlite and have made much more progress than the pistol bit. 👍
Makita should also be there
I bought the lite-flight last year to use with my dewalt 20 volt. On the 2Ah battery I can get about 30 holes.
Great video man. Very informative. I'm in the market for a new drill for my Cabelas EZE auger so this helped a lot.
I have the bosch gsr1330 w/8ah battery, with clam auger adapter plate and 8" mora ice swedebore hand auger flighting and it chews through 20" of ice effortlessly, i accidentally drilled my first hole in speed 2 with kickback control only kicking in on the breakthrough. Love this setup
Thanks for doing this much needed and very helpful review! Great video!
It is really cool that even with such a small channel you do what you can to find the best options for people like us
He k of a video man! I work in fishing retail and talking with customers and seeing the product in person, I thought the ion/eskimo bits were over hyped. Especially since my strivemaster 40v keeps up with the ion no problem, and I've never lost a race to a drill bit. I never realized how much better the lite flight blade was over the eskimo!!
Was seriously thinking of getting the Eskimo pistol bit. I already have the Clam adapter plate with a Dewalt 20v 5ah(DCD991) 820 UWO(no torque listed). I've used it on my old Strikemaster Lazer hand auger drilling dozens of holes for the past 2 years w/o any issues. Gonna stay with my current setup, thanks for the comparisons!
Love my 8" pistol bit with my dewalt used it in 18 plus inches of ice no problem
Get someone who can really compare he’s not clearing any holes for the bits besides the 40v will always be hard if you don’t
I clicked on your video just to see how they compare, but mostly to confirm my belief that my choice of milwaukee 2804 with lite flite was best. And boom first thing I noticed is that I recognize exactly where you filmed this! That never happens! New sub here! Good content
Haha that’s awesome! Glad you liked the video! I do have more planned. messed up my ankle or I would have made more already.
Thanks!Great review!Guess i'm getting the Metabo!
YES!!!!! I think you should a video of how many holes each can do before the battery dies!
Great video! This raw, unbiased, unsponsored video helps a simple guy with the huge decision process of what to buy.?I’d like to see a hole-count video as a followup to see what that entails👍👍
Interesting on the ridgid. I have a gen 5X 18V R86116 i believe the same drill on the same eskimo auger 4 amp batteries. I have had it for 3 years and have not had any issues. I run it on #1 setting on drill mode. When i first bought it and ran it on #2 setting it did what you were showing. Im in michigan and drill through ice depending on the time of year 10 to 24 inches. Its not 36 inches, but hard ice cuts like butter. Good video. Thanks
Thanks for watching and commenting. When it gets below minus 30 and over 30inches it’s amazing how much more torque there is on the drills. Lots of people commenting saying I should of cleared the hole more etc. The ridged cut out in 2 seconds in these extreme conditions. The batteries did come right out of a very warm truck to start these tests also. I’m a Ridgid guy myself. The fact it failed is why I wanted to do the test. And was more of a fun test to see the limits of these drills. Happy fishing!
I bought the Pistol Bit last year and the blades got dull really fast. Maybe after 50 holes. It also gets stuck at the bottom of the holes. I decided to get a K-Drill this year and already after only being out 3 times this year I like it so much more. Doesn't get stuck as it breaks through the ice and it drills connecting holes with no issues. I almost bought the Strike Master but went with the K-Drill as there are so many people who love it! It's almost got a cult following online...
How much are K -drills
For the chucks, you’re supposed to tighten them all the way and the click them back so they wiggle back-and-forth
That's a myth :) Look it up
Awesome video! This is the main reason I talked my buddy out of the pistol bit
Awesome comparison, a hole count between the Strikemaster and Metabo would be really good info
The best auger comparison video I have seen. Thanks
Really liked the video! That metabo is impressive. Would like to see how it competes against the dewalt flex advantage drill with a flexvolt battery. Though I’ve never had any of those issues you were having with the pistol bit it did pique my interest in picking up a lite flite just to see.
Great video. Thanks for posting. I've been running the pistol bit with a ryobi 18volt. Ive noticed that the batteries themselves are inconsistent. I have two 4 ah, one 3 ah and three small 1.5 or 2 ah. Ine of the oldest small batteries will last longer than one of my 4 ah batts. I think perhaps the 4 ah battery is just faulty. Age batteries makes a difference. I have also seen the 4 ah battery need to "warm up" before it cuts well. In other words first hole of the day isnt cut without it quitting a couple times but the third hole it bores through without stopping. Can't explain that.
I used a regular, brushed, Ridgid drill last season with no issues. Drilled tons of holes on the half dozen trips I made to Lake Simcoe. I just bought the brushless Ridgid Gen 5X with the 4ah battery used in this video. I hope I have better luck then this guy did
Thanks for watching! In most situations the Ridgid drill is fine. The point of this video was to show absolute worst conditions. this was very hard very deep ice for any drill and augers. less ice and softer ice is no problem for most of these options. For sure the best combo was the lite flite and the Metabo. I recently tested the Dewalt dcd999 and its near or at the top also. Happy holidays and happy fishing!
Rigid octane is 1400 in lbs
@@korrupted_chubby8422 1,300 in lbs
Check out the quick hookup from deep freeze ice fishing might help keeping the auger hooked to the drill.
Been using that Metabo for 2 years now. I have no complaints other than yeah the chuck can be finicky sometimes. With that being said I've left those batteries laying in my sled in sub zero temps all day and pop one back in and go drill 10 more holes no problem. The thing really is a beast.
Hey buddy. I bought the Strikemaster Lite flite today and was thinking about getting the Metabo. I'm glad someone else has one before pulling the trigger.
@@brettdemmin4819 you won't regret it, keep it in the lower gear and keep it off the hammer drill setting. I recommend using the handle that comes with it until you've used it for awhile, gives you more control and it's less liable to get you twisted lol
Thanks for the video, smoked my non-hammer drill makita last weekend so on the hunt for something new. I'm glad your video actually has some ice, I watch some of these other reviewers and they only have 6" of ice. 😄 I'm at about 20" of ice, so the other reviews have left me unsure if they are valid. I've got a clam plate adapter and I am going to pick up the gear reducer (3.6 to 1 reduction) so hopefully that helps no matter what drill I pick.
Thanks for the info, helped clear up a lot of questions I had
Good video, thanks for your hard work. I’d like to see strike master vs the k drill
Very awesome video man. Really enjoyed it. I would love to see you review more augers and more drills in the future. Like strikemaster 24v and dewalt drills. Liked the video
This weekend I tried the ion G2 10" composite flite on the 2804. Drilled 30" ice no issue in 20 seconds!
I have the ridgid and the pistol bit and have no problem. I can drill holes all day long without a problem.
Thanks for the video, it was really nice to see a good comparison.
Awesome video. Love how you test in pretty much the most extreme condition.
use both a fuel and an xr regularly and i can say i’ve never had an issue popping holes all day in 17+ inches of ice and i can’t say i’ve ever had an issue with either. not until it’s time to change the blades
Testing the best of the worst???? How to you do a tool compare without dewalt or makita?
This test was done during Covid and neither of those drills were available I had the dewalt dcd999 and the 40v makita can’t remember the model it’s been a few years. Anyway they were both on back order and it was either do the tests on ice or see how fast they drilled water. Lol. For reference I have since tested them also but never made a video. I currently run the dewalt dcd999 for its balance of more power than the Milwaukee and more tool options and availability that metabo or makita. Basically it goes makita dewalt metabo all the same power. Then Milwaukee then the rest. I have not tried Milwaukees 9703 or whatever the new one is yet though. Thanks for watching.
After watching your video I purchased the metoba and a buddy of mine has the Milwaukee fuel he drilled 3 holes and his died while my metoba made ice into Swiss cheese!
Haha, Thats awesome!! The Metabo is a great drill!!
Thanks for the great content! Very informative. I wonder how the drills would do connected to a Clam Plate.
Awesome job like unbiased comparisons.
I need to see what drills the most holes!!! Great video by the way
Great video. Well done! Just what I needed to make a decision. Keep it going
I’ve used the ryobi 18v with Eskimo 8 inch auger for years I just upgraded to Dewalt 20v I’m sure will be just fine. But I’m only drilling 8-20 inches normally. But never an issue
I also want to add this was a great video and appreciated all the work you did
this is the first time I've seen the 40 volt in action and would definitely consider it definitely looks more comfortable drilling with the two handles like the old school augers
You had me at watching a million guys drilling other holes!
I have the milwakee fuel hammer drill. The damn thing rips with my k drill auger on it. Very impressed and the batterys last a long time
I can definitely see the validity in a drill set up for early season ice, that 4"-8" range would seem to be where a drill would shine, after that I think I would want to change over to an actual auger set up. Cool video just my opinion
Absolutely that’s kinda why I did this video because I wanted to show the performance in the worst condition. The 40v strike master and the ion is definitely the best option for deep ice!
I wish Wi pistol bit beats my buddies ion and other buddies 40v strikemaster all day 2 1/2 feet of ice
The kobolt kicked ass I have the same drill just got a attachment for it and I love the pistol grip
Great video. Hope you can continue. Merry Christmas.
I used my dad's ridgid, and it did it just fine. Didn't have my dewalt drill with. The dewalt would have spun the lake tho so we got lucky
Yes let's see the comparison between the best drill and the 40v
Haven't used any of these but I like the drill setup because then I have a drill for year round use
Good video for sure, but lots of variables there still and not apples to apples comparisons completely. You should also check out the clam auger drill adapter plate as well. I run a Milwaukee fuel M18 volt with a clam adapter plate and the lower half of a 6 inch lazer hand auger attached to clam plate. With a 5amp hour battery in say 8 to 15 inches of ice I can cut up to and over 75 holes on 1 battery no problem. I have had a few days over 100 holes! In less ice of course. The set up I use is the best I've experienced yet. I take 4 batteries with me every time, just on case lol. So far, I've never needed more than 1 all day.
Yes I do want THAT! 😊👍👍👍TY for sharing this video with us. Excellent information. 🙏
Great video I’ve never had any problems what so ever with my Milwaukee and 6” Liteflite set up it’s really fast plus I use the drill around the house along with all my other Milwaukee tools. They’re a fantastic company that stands behind their product. I had a Strikemaster 40V that never left the basement after I bought the drill setup. Started with a Kdrill but it ate up the batteries to fast. Good luck fishing !!
Thanks for putting this review together, best of luck on growing your channel. Cheers
since the chucks dont hold the best it can be easy for your auger to come off when your done drilling your hole and you start to pull it out. when you use the clam drill plate it gives you a solid handle, it will save your wrists and wear and tear on your drill and it wont come off of the auger. This is really great if your using your drill with a hand auger.
Interesting Comparison Test!
Great Work showing the differences !
Ive got a local machine thats starting to give up on me after 2years of fishing only a ca120$ system but its worked fine until now and recent end of winter going from 15holes 150mm suger to a mere 3-4holes something broke i guess .
Thanks for the Help chosing :)
Regards Paul Roger Nilsson -North Sweden
Dude. You need a long extension for your auger. I realize the ice is very thick but you won’t have to break your back near as much. Thanks for the video. My Milwaukee has been going strong for eight years now. It’s a great set up :-) :-)
You did good man 👍
The fishing industry is based out of the northern USA states & a lot of these products are created for that huge market. Thinner ice, float suits ect.. Western Canada we get some ice 🧊, comes with the -30 C territory. A lot of people get hooked on advertising.
You definitely just sold some strike master augers & flights.
Last season I bought the pistol bit and Dewalt flex fuel.. kept my jiffy propane incase the drill combo failed.. my first attempt at the pistol bit was terrible.. did some research and found out the initial blades were defective and put on the included spare set.. shame on you Eskimo.. after a couple outings I sold my jiffy. Couldn’t be happier… gotta keep the battery warm throughout the day for maximum performance..
That’s good to hear I was able to get the dewalt dcd999 the drill you got. I will do another test once it’s no minus 40. For this test there were the new replacements blades from Eskimo on the pistol.
All I use is my ridgid and the metal strike master lazer auger. It blows through the ice without a glitch. Only time it stopped was when I had the Clutch in the wrong setting.
That’s the same kind of ice I’m used to here in Alaska. None of those handhelds are practical for 26 inches of ice. I run a strike master now and it’s good for maybe 30 holes a day and it even stops during the cut. My 10 Eskimo mako M43 and it’s the only one that runs all the way through but even that has locked up on me in the hole. Cutting ice 30 inches thick in -20 is a whole different ball game!
Thanks for watching and commenting!! Lots of people are used to warmer temps and less ice . That’s why I did this test to show the worst conditions. Lots of reviews are in 10” of ice. It was fun to test the limits! Happy fishing!
@@bfjoutdoors Yeah I personally loved the video because I couldn’t find anyone cutting ice I’ve 12 to 14 inches. Good call on you. I liked it
tighten the chuck and back of till you feel one click then it wont come lose. thats how the Milwaukee chucks work.
