Its a 15 min video on “how to” not a 15min job, something that you might take a hour might take me 10 mins
YIKES. THATS a lot of doodads to un-doodad. it s crazy when you understand that those vehicles roll off the assembly line one every 1.5 to 2 minutes 24/7/365 so you can see that any given assembly step in the OEM assembly line has to take less that that cycle time---Obvious that these things go together a WHOLE HELL of a lot faster and easier than they come apart. the "cockpit assembly" takes a lot more stations on the assembly line than any other part of the car , usually two peeps on each station on each side of the vehicle . it is mesmerizing dance to watch these folks put these vehicles together. i've got to this same dash R&R on my 06 sub. rats got inot the dash and chewed wires so that nothing works --go to figger out what got munched .....damn sure not loooking forward to it

I wish it were that simple, but you will continuously leaking antifreeze , and you will actually be breathing it in which is toxic, and it only cost $40 for the part, It’s a pain in the ass but at least it’s not a $340 part that takes 15 minutes.
I take that back it was 90 something bucks and the worst thing I’ve ever done in my life ha ha Ha, Give me the wrong part at first the right part number for O’Reilly’s auto parts is 93050

I see Granger has a 12v heater with vents that has to water ports for $209. I think I would just run the heater hoses to it and mount it on top the dash or at least inside the dash

I worked at a large equipment company manufacturing plant. This is what happens when the heater core engineer gets his plans in last. Looks easier to cut a hole through the fire wall. Thanks for the video

Bout an hour ago I flushed heater core put all back together drank a beer took of to try it out sob worked i got heat on the defrost now.but i notice one hose on outside firewall is hotter than the other. So i know there's a restriction down in the thermostat.ill figure it out.but i gotta hand it to ya buddy.you got lots patience and that's what it takes.thnx have a good THANKSGIVING YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.
I was quoted a 1000 bucks to replace. I have 270k on my suburban. I live in the Nort, I just need a heater core to keep windshield clear... better than sticking my head out the window. A good to the point video!

Very good video, very good detail and process of disassembly. I put it in my fav, because about every other hidden bolt, screw and nut I'll need it. Can't see and I'm old....Just finished replacing and fixing water pump and cooling system on a 5.3L. Thank you for the video, Awesome job Sir!! Holy crap! I don't like stop leak, but after watching this, it would be worth a try circulating it just through the heater core by itself.
I just bought a nice Tahoe really cheap, but she said it keeps loosing coolant and they don't know where. Well my fogged up sticky windshield is a good indication, along with the smell.

Thank you very much! Straight and to the point. This was a job, but I didn't want to half ass it. I was mainly replacing the ac core, but you better belive I did that heater core too. Word to the wise if you have to do the ac core, there are about 20 little "plastic welds" you need to drill out to separate the hvac box. Thanks agian man!

Gm should use this guy in their training videos. He has to be the ONLY person to exsist to remove a chevy/gmc heater core in 15 minutes but to boot, not one cuss word was even spoken. David Blaine doesn't have shit on this guy's magician skills.

Did both cores on my 2001 Silverado. Removed 4 nuts and metal plate under steering column, but did not loosen or lower the column. Did disconnect steering shaft and gear shift linkage. Did not remove the two screws behind the cluster, but did pull the two bolts behind the drivers side windshield vent duct. It was also unnecessary to remove the upper metal brackets and the upper ductwork. Once the dash was pulled back on the passenger side, I was able to remove the entire HVAC box.

So my mechanic is telling me pretty much what you're doing. And he also says he needs to take out the seats and console?? I'm also taking him a genuine GM part. Not going cheapo here! One thing your vid has shown me: I ain't tackling this one! 😆

Thank you for making this video. After watching it the 1st time I thought long and hard about tackling the leaking heater core in my 2003 1500HD. (Considered keeping a blanket in there.) Soooo, I watched it a couple more times and decided to dive in. It took me all day but it’s done and back together and working perfectly. The bag and tag method and a charpie marker to label the parts helped me a lot. Thanks again!

I do the same plus put screws/bolts back in place when possible or put in different containers marked where they go. Looking at a pile of bolts can get tough remembering which bolts go where. Take steps to make sure hoses and wires are routed correctly.

My vehicle is a 2000 Silverado. A couple tips for this truck:
I used sandwich baggies, labeled with a sharpie to organize the hardware. I also labeledthe bags witha time stamp fromyour videofor quick reference. Zero fasteners left over and every one exactly where it should be.
The highbeam sensor in the middle of the dash pad comes out with a quarter turn counter clockwise. Easier than unplugging it.
The two15mm bolts on driver side don't have to come out.
The top duct doesn't have to come out.
Take off the boot for the AC drain so it doesn't get crimped on reassmbly, slip it back on before you re-mount the accumulator.
A ratchet strap hooked between the dash and upper rear door latch on the passenger side will hold the dash out of the way.
Have some foam weatherstripping on hand to replace any of the foam gaskets which may have deteriorated, and for the heater core itself as the new one doesn't come with.
Have a shop vacuum handy to clean up the coolant from the passenger side floorboard. I vacuumed the coolant up, poured water on the rug and vacuumed again.
I THOUGHT it was all done:
Brake lights, cruise control didn't work, and the headlights came on as soon as the truck started. Instead of turning on when the parking brake was released.
I left a plug disconnected at top left of dash. Probably didn't need to unplug it at all.

Fantastic video as far as showing the proper way to do it. You can save time by using a ratchet strap to hold the passenger side of the entire dash assembly once you free the top support bolts and just pull the dash back to give you room to access it. No need to bother with the steering column or AC. can be removed and replaced in roughly 4 hours if you have the appropriate tools.

I had a '93 chevy 3500, the manual said it would require removing the entire dash, I went 5 years without heat. Finally decided to tackle it and to my surprise..... turns out it was just a few screws on the housing and it came right out, NO PROBLEMS, less than an hour and I was done. did I feel stupid for going without heat? yupp.

Well, i need to do this again because my blend door for the ac, doesn't lock and snap into the two positions for some reason so i have to replace the ac box or at least to see if i can repair it. Dreading it so much.

Jesus Christ...I was looking for a tutorial on how to do this. My 99 Sierra 1500 4.8L has a bad coolant smell inside the cab, I suspect the heater core. I didn't realize how big a job this is. I know the video is 2 years old, but maybe you'll see this, and hopefully reply. What's the easiest way to diagnose a heater core issue?
If you smell Coolant its ether the heater core or the quick connection at the fire wall, check it first

Let me no if you find it, if thats not the issue look for it to drip under the passenger floor like the a/c is on but it will be antifreeze instead of condensation

Heater cores have always been a bit of a pain to do, This one isn't all that bad. But having to discharge the AC is an inexcusable engineering mistake from GM.
How did you discharge the ac?
I took it to an ac mechanic they discharge it for me and just fill it up once I’m done. charged me 25 bucks
And then at work people ask me why I hate GM products so much in general, you just did provide an answer 🎉 honestly techs don’t make much money in this kind of jobs because of the time that it takes even GM cars from the 70s were a nightmare too to work on the ac system

I don't have it in me any more... What was wrong with previous design that was up under the dash?
This past weekend I removed my dash so I could get to my HVAC box. I thought it was worthwhile to actually remove everything so that I could inspect all wires and will be giving it all a good clean while I'm there. But to do this, I actually found it to be pretty simple to just remove the steering wheel. I think dropping the steering column is nuts. Just pop off the airbag with a flathead (from behind, there's a couple spring loaded bars that have to be levered to free to airbag module), remove the nut, and then pop off the wheel with the puller. I had to do this anyway because I'm replacing the old worn out turn signal switch as well as the shifter lever boot, but I feel like this is the way to go as opposed to dropping the column. Maybe I'm wrong, but just wanted to throw this out there in case no one had considered it. Because it also removes the risk of messing up your alignment with the clock spring.
All I've got to say is my hat's off to you my friend.

I suggest first try a sealer like Alumaseal Stop leak powder or liquid. If your heater was not fully warm blowing out prior to a leak I suggest a chemical flush first then the sealer.
Also I reversed hoses (back flush core) many times and got great heat. Also the Alumaseal has fixed many water pumps.
Alumaseal is the best for sure. Seals quickly without plugging up system.

I have a silverado and suburban. I pretty much do everything to my vehicles. I havent done a heater core in 30 years on a 1985 Grand AM. That was a PIA but that looks like a piece of cake compared to this shit. At 51 years old, and doing pretty well financially, I aint touching this. Will definitely be taking this job to a shop. I am not wasting an entire day off of work to do that crap.

Took me 4hrs to get it out, and 3hrs to get it 90% back together before realizing the vent duct didn’t line up properly with the heater box. So I gotta take it almost all back apart again lol

Cutting out the black housing close to the heater core then pulled it out
Replace it then sealed it off with tar tape, in matter of 2 hours time ,
But I must say it’s not good way
To do it , i have been driving my truck about 4 years with no problem
