Oh man, I sunk *hundreds* of hours into this game as a kid. It was the only Godzilla ANYTHING I owned, and I had a blast (we also didn't have many games in general lol). I remember the menu section that had a bunch of the concept art, test animations, and even trailers for Godzilla movies, and the concept art itself I think was what helped push me into wanting to do that as a kid. Yeah, the controls were jank, and the game was also INCREDIBLY buggy, but when you're a kid with not many video games and no point of reference, all you really care about is "big monster smash hahah"

Same here dude. My brother and I loved playing this game when we were younger and had a blast doing so even with the janky controls. I always played with Destroyah or Kiryu personally

It's still insane to me that, not only how popular Godzilla is now, but for the last several years (pretty much since the first Legendary and Shin) that there's been nothing since Godzilla PS4... that was delisted. Like...HOW?! That Eva x Godzilla april fools led to some killer designs and figures that would make awesome skins, the Shin design, and now Minus One. Just nuts there's been no new games.
Best we got these days is the Godzilla DLC for Gigabash, which I hear is really good but….it’s not the same.

There's one in the pipeline, but it's a 2.5D platformer or something from the Castle of Heart guys. Not even announced as a footnote at a gaming expo. It was revealed at one of those trade expos where they announce merch partnerships and such.
Yeah man I find it so bloody insane there hasn't been a new Godzilla game that isn't the King of the Monsters guest starring in other games, it doesn't even need to be a AAA budget/priced title either, like a budget title of the single or AA at most would be enough, make it brawler or a fighter that's what I feel Godzilla at least game wise is best at.
Not to mention more recently Rise of Kong that infamous piece of shovelware by Gamemill I can imagine didn't give much confidence in Toho or Legendary on taking on another Monster Mash type game, so it's the problem of finding talent that is willing to take on such a task and are passionate enough to pull it off, maybe Wayforward since they do have a history with the character on the GBA making quite a banger there.

I think my aunt worked on the Wii version of this. She used to work for Backbone in Vancouver up until they closed down and I remember that her biggest highlight was going down to Oregon to work on a Godzilla game. After looking into the game, I'm like 90% sure she animated Mothra (from remembering her showing me the Maya animations she had saved) for this game. Gotta love this small world stuff.

@@ironcarnage1019 not at all nosey. But sadly no. If I remember correctly it was an old pink Dell laptop that's been lost to the ages. But not to seem like a "my dad works at Nintendo" guy, if you look in the credits of this or a backbone entertainment staple "death jr and the science fair of doom" for a Carrie (last name withheld cause Internet).. it should be there.
If that’s the case, then she did a really good job because Mothra is animated beautifully in that game.

I'll be real, it may be nostalgia talking, but considering this was my gateway drug to classic Godzilla stuff, this game does hold a really special place in my heart.
The trailers for the older movies in the gallery was a great catalyst for me to love godzilla

With Godzilla's resurgence in popularity globally, it's a shame we haven't gotten any big game (outside of cameos and guest appearances) released with the big lizard since 2014. I would love a modern attempt at the Pipeworks games released on the PS2.

I grew up with the Wii and DS versions of this game, as well as the GameCube and PS2 versions of the first two games. Fond memories all around.
Godzilla Unleashed will always be one of my favorite games. So many awesome memories playing it with my brother. The roster of playable monsters blew my mind as a kid.

It should be noted that the Unleashed Overhaul Final Wars mod is a REALLY cool way to experience the game with proper controls.

I LOVE THIS GAME! I remember playing this game on the Nintendo Wii back when it came out. My favorite monster was Godzilla 1990’s. Thanks for covering this game on “What Happened”.

Godzilla is at its peak right now. Minus One has done supremely well for itself and Godzilla X Kong is off to a great start, becoming the Monsterverse's highest opening day. They even have more kaiju they could use from the Monsterverse like the two Mutos, Behemoth, Tiamat, Skar King, Shimo and hell, throw in their versions of Rodan, Mothra, Ghidorah, and Mecha, as well as every version of Godzilla, from 2014 to Evolved. I'm certain it would sell really well.
As someone who loved playing this game with my cousin as a kid every 23rd December, this video's going to give me a nostalgia trip like no other.

Godzilla Unleashed was one of my childhood games. I loved it so much, played it all the time along Mario Kart and Crash of the Titans
Closest we have rn is the Gigabash collaboration where they added a few godzilla monsters as DLC, they did Ultraman as well. I heard rumors that Passion Republic they might be producing a wholly Godzilla based game now, but that is just a rumor.
This game had a really cool highlight reel of Godzilla films to his theme and its been a favorite of mine ever since!
I’m honestly so glad we’re past this era of developers forcing gimmicky, unplayable motion controls into their games that was so rampant on the majority of Wii software. Perhaps if Godzilla Unleashed was remade from scratch with traditional button controls in mind, then it’d probably be a much better game overall.
Now its back to forced trend chasing!

Unleashed Overhaul Final Wars fixes a lot of the controls.
Also, there's the PS2 versions, which is kinda like Save The Earth.
I enjoyed playing both versions as a kid growing up, and still enjoy playing it from time to time. Its fun playing it and trying to unlock other monsters by using the points you get from destroying buildings.
This game introduced me to my man Rodan.
If you want a "Fourth" Pipeworks game, then check out Godzilla save the earth MELEE, its a huge fan overhaul and they just released a brand new trailer.
Does it have the same music of unleashed?
Because of TOHO's inaction, there's actually a small community that's been taking apart Save the Earth and putting it back together to make a mod which includes new monsters called Godzilla: Save the Earth Melee. The project has been around for a while but they've finally made headway into a working build which is set to come out sometime this year! Penguin0 even watched a tournament they had a while back on a much older test build they released a while back. It's the best shot we're going to have in regards to a new Godzilla game that isn't a crossover or a 2D chess game so check it out!
I loved it for the roster alone, but boy was I upset during development to learn that the true version of the game would be wii exclusive...got a wii anyway, of course. Just for this game.
I got one hell of a workout from it, I'll say that much.

Watching this after realizing I somehow didn’t finish The Bouncer and Grabbed by the Ghoulies videos and watching those first. Looking forward to this one! Also, Kenny Omega was so much fun on Triple KO this week, hope he guest stars again soon

If I had to guess, that track from FFVIII is pretty distinct, and it might've triggered copyright detection. The original export didn't have that second track overlapping, so it might been a quick fix. Sometimes Matt adds small changes after the final deliverable, like replacing the end screen with different social media links or cutting out a line by the request of an interviewer.
It's also possible that when the end credits song was replaced, a small snippet was accidentally left on the timeline, as both songs seem to be identical.
It might be worth exploring the possibility of having editors deliver isolated audio tracks along with final deliverables, or using a 5.1 mixed audio track in the final export to help make any last minute cuts or modifications be more seamless.

Look into the "Godzilla Unleashed Overhaul" fan patch. It corrects a lot of the issues with the game.
Everyone go look up Godzilla Save the Earth Melee. It started off as a fan made overhaul of Save the Earth, and now it's becoming a full fan made sequel. It includes mechanics from all 3 games, Monster Balances, new moves, new skins, better textures

Wii was my first game console and this was my first game for it. Never had any issues with controls personally, all felt very natural to me.
Check out the fan mod for Godzilla Save the Earth, called Godzilla STEM.
It's an overhaul of mechanics with brand new monsters and graphics, this is the sequel we always wanted

Oh, this one always hurts a bit. This was so close to greatness, fix the controls and expand the story, especially expand the individual stories for each monster. The set up and groundwork were just so solid, and it just did not deliver.
I absolutely loved this game on ps2 as a kid and was shocked people didnt like it...until i played it as an adult and now i get it but still enjoy it

I still remember the first time I saw the commercial for Godzilla unleashed at my grandmothers house, and I was so hyped I practically begged my parents to get it. It was my first real exposure to Godzilla and any knowledge I have about any of the monster when I see them in monsterverse comes from this. I miss this game

I’ve always been a big fan of Unleashed. While the flaws are forever present, I can’t help but love it for everything else the game has to offer.

Toho and Legendary need to greenlight a game that also features Kaiju's and Giant Robots from franchises outside of Toho that's inspired by Smash Bros but plays like the Pipesworks games. Jet Jaguar vs Ultraman vs Megazord vs Slattern vs Gypsy Danger vs Godzilla would be nuts.
Great Video! I did the art duties on the Colossal Kaiju Combat trading game cards. I worked on all 6 sets as well as the comic book. I think the comic book was printed up in limited numbers for G-Fest. I was honored to have had the chance to work on so many original characters from the CKC fan base. It's a shame that the IP didn;t survive in some form or other.
Was waiting for coverage of this one. Save the Earth also has an interesting development history, the story mode ended up getting gutted very close to the game's release date among other things, but that one turned out to be a good game.
Now as this was a childhood game for me, I actually very much like this game despite its faults. I will admit that it has them, but my childhood nostalgia prevents me from complaining about them.

Have you heard about Godzilla Save The Earth Melee + Unleashed!?!?! They’re literally remaking Godzilla STE by combing both Melee and Unleashed and giving us a whole new bigger game! Like changing move sets, adding new monsters, and so much more! They’re even adding Godzilla Unleashed DS skins for Godzilla 2000 and Orga!!!

I remember hanging out at my local Hollywood video as a kid where they had that exclusive gaming area, and it was like 3 pillars, 3 TV’s each pillar, and different consoles to each tv(some doubled) and they didn’t have demos to play, they had the entire games you could chill and play.
I discovered kingdom hearts there, blinx, sly cooper, so much more AND Godzilla unleashed, such great memories man.
Me and my best friend would ALWAYS play this game together. We still dig out the PS2 every now and then and just have a blast
I remember when my parents got us a wii for Christmas back in 2007, Godzilla Unleashed was the first wii game I bought myself. By that point I'd seen all the reviews and everything, but I just wanted a game where I could play as godzilla monsters, and we'd only had a Sega Genesis and N64 before that.
I could have gotten Destroy All Monsters Melee, but picked Unleashed because it had so many more monsters.
I honestly remember Unleashed being my favorite game for years. I unlocked everything in it (no small feat), and me and my brothers and friends had so many Godzilla Unleashed parties. It was a huge part of my childhood. I even somehow got acclimated to the terrible controls. I tried picking it up a few years ago and...yeah, the controls are really terrible. As a kid who loved Godzilla though, I didn't even notice.

Aw man, I remember that kickstarter but always wondered what happened to it. Learning one of the devs died and that's the main reason the game never got realized is heartbreaking.

Played the Wii version for the longest time, but the motion controls prevent me from ever wanting to revisit it. Fortunately, there've been a number of dedicated fans who have created mods to map the inputs to traditional controllers (to varying degrees of success), among other quality of life updates. I actually had all three versions of Unleashed. First for the DS, then for the PS2 and then for Wii. I played all versions and found something to love about them. My first TH-cam videos were from these games. I was very good at them, but no video survived on this platform. If you've seen videos of this game back in the late 2000s, then there's a chance, they were from me.
(Not every gameplay in this video is from the original release of the game. There are big fans of these games modding them with outstanding passion.)
