One of the creepiest scenes to ever hit the cinema....
Facts , after all these years still terrifying
That’s why it works. There is something to be said for character acting.
💯
and it was taken from stokers Dracula when he wants to enter Lucys, bedroom, and finally goes inside with the shapeshift of an animal same as the wolf of dracula,...
@@lesleyrussell8200 Poltergeist came out before that though, didn't it?
If Rev. Kane looked horrifically sick, he was. He was dying of stomach cancer. Great performance! 👍
The actor playing Kane was dying during the filming?

Julian was so SICK with cancer, but performed his scenes in this film like a PRO!!!!!!!!!!!
He played a great part in a miami vice episode as well
I think only a short time before
his death, very professional
and dedicated actor.
I don't mean this to sound disrespectful, but... his sickness really added a lot to this character. His ill-look made him even more scary.
@@JD0124 Julian played it to a tee and his skeleton like face just made it all the more believable. No disrespect at all, he 100% knew what he was doing and gave it his all ! A true pro!
Brilliantly creep scene...I thought the film suffered after his passing, wanted to see more of him.
Poor man. He looks like the german officer who drank from the wrong chalice in Indiana Jones and the holy grail 😮
I wish Biden would of stuck with acting...he was so great back in this movie 38 years ago in his younger self
OMG that's so funny that you said that because I could help but think he looked like him too! 😂
Hilarious Biden Twin
Harris is definitely the Wicked Witch of Oz...
This guy absolutely terrified me when I was a child I'm 45 and he still gives me the creeps
44 yes I heard he had cancer and he was on his way out . That's why he Looked so deathly.
what type of parents would allow their child to watch this movie?
80's parents. So we knew what was up. We knew the Rev Kanes of the world. @@gabrielomalley6266
That means he did his job good with the acting then lol
Richard Burton was also dying when he played O'Brian in "1984" and used it to his advantage. I don't know what my own mindset would be if I were dying of something horrible but big respect to people who manage to use it as an advantage to their craft... rather than just getting all miserable about it, I mean I can barely cope if I so much as stub my toe in the morning!
RIP Juilan Beck. You rocked this scene!
Takes some good acting skills to pull off a good bad guy like that
@@SpicyRikers Joe Biden manages it every day. 😂
He was dying of stomach cancer when this was filmed. An actor to the end.
@jmpattillo I remember when I first saw this in grade school after it came out, my Mom was watching it with me. She said "He looks so creepy." He did look creepy, but a lot of the public didn't know at the time that he was dying during the filming of this movie. Much respect to him for finishing what he could on this project even though he was terminally ill.
A stunning final performance by Julian Beck, who passed from cancer a few weeks after filming this role. Though Poltergeist II has flaws, scenes like this make it worth a viewing. Reverend Kane is one of my favorite villains. Julian's performance in this scene should be studied in acting classes.
He was only 64 in this scene.
The actor who played Taylor died less than a year after this film came out
Julian Beck died at 60 years old according to two sources, wiki and imdb. 64, aye?
I actually think the only flaws the sequel has: 1. Not even bothering to mention Dana, the older sister! Originally, the script was going to mention her & say that she was away at college and too scared to return home. WHY did they not film that, I wonder?? 2. The editing is a little choppy, they leave out why Tangina says "I don't really trust my instincts anymore." & other background on Taylor & Kane's spiritual background. But even so......this film still gets a 9.8/10 from me! It is fantastic!
he was 60 not 64@@danieldevito6380
Julian Beck's "Reverend Kane" gives more horror and menace than a whole army of CGI-created zombies. A backstory on the Reverend Kane character would make a great "prequel" to the Poltergeist movies. He's a sort of combination of a Reverend Jim Jones (of the Peoples Temple) and Freddy Krueger.
Lots of potential in Reverend Kane indeed.
a good horror is usually more subtle than Zombies, Halloween is a great horror, the music and suspense make the film scarier than buckets of blood and giblets
I think you have a fantasic idea for a spinoff!
Unforgettable scene. What made the whole Poltergeist series extra creepy.
Randall Flagg is here too, somehow...
This is a very terrifying yet inspirational scene. On screen it’s terrifying, behind the camera inspirational because Julian Beck (the preacher Kane) had been diagnosed with stomach cancer three years prior (1983), in the scene you can see how he’s using his ailment and putting it to work for him as he presents himself to the family as a mortal Man, but you can see the corruption exuding from him. I wouldn’t know if we should define this as character acting, method acting or both. But I think it’s inspiring that an actor in his position was able to give such an iconic scene that holds up decades later.
That's a professional
I remember seeing this when I was young in the 1980s. He really gave me the creeps. The character is a good example of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The actor to played this scene did it very well.
* The actor Reverend Kane * (just found out) * is Mr. Julian Beck 👏 * & they could
not have picked a better person for this part!
*** Wow 👏 😍 * Julian Beck's voice is so phenomenal in this & I could listen 🎶 😍 to '❤ his voice' ❤ all day!
He actually died before the movie finished filming. You can see that, in some of the scenes that were filmed towards the end, they had to use a puppet made up as Reverend Kane.
One of the spookiest scenes ever shot. The urgency of the character was fueled by the actor's urgency and end of life realities. R.I.P
Julian Beck performance is absolutely mesmerizing in this scene. Craig T Nelson definitely adds to his performance as well.
I agree
This gentleman scared me so much as a child .still does freak me
Reverend Kane is more creepy than Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees combined!
I thought Julian Beck as the Reverend Kane was creepy as Hannibal Lecter.
Especially at only 60 when he died!
Yet he is nowhere near as well known
Joe Biden is creepier 🤣
@@trumpofhazzard9176 how?
5:49 how he goes from nearly hysterical then his expression gently melts away into a calmness....so freaking creepy!
We live in a world where we not only let Reverend Kane in, we let him become President.
yea, and he just looks and talks like isaac from children of the corn 84,...
If Biden is the creepy old guy trying to get inside, then Trump is the little girl that he's trying to get. Thanks for ruining my day.
Cmon man, corn pop is in his holy temple.

Exactly 😂
He looks like a weird cross between Charlton Heston and Joe Biden
No, he looks very much like Mcgumry Burns from the Simpsons cartoon.🤭🤭🤭🤣🤣🤣😜
I see that too! I immediately thought of Biden, but now that you mention it I see Heston in there too! 😂
no make up, no CGI. as a kid I was terrified shitless. granted he was sick with cancer but still did a phenomenal job
One of the scariest actors ever, his presence, his demeanor, facial gestures, my god he was truly terrifying, but SO GOOD at his craft!
Same for the killer ghost in Witchboard. I don't even think makeup was applied, and his smiling face was the first real jumpscare of the film.
With acting being his passion, I think Julian intentionally used his condition to that advantage. Truly gifted actor and left his mark with this performance. Thank you Julian!!
Joe Biden's ad campaign is getting a bit esoteric.
LOL
Americans are NOT getting smarter.... we'll never get used to the stupidity!
When Joe Biden used to act. 😂
Out of all the horror movie villains, all the monsters, all the killers, the demons, the aliens, the entities etc., Reverend Kane is the only one to ever truly frightened me.
"Now, let me in, and let's talk about it." 😁
Same here...really preys on your mind. Proves he's a great actor ❤
Yes! Because it's real. I see old people like him everyday
He had Steven in a trance, where as his mind wasn't aware of the situation, almost like he was hypnotized, then he snaps out of it, when Carolanne calls him, really is a mesmerizing kind of scene and very scary and creepy.
That's because he is so close to resembling Satan and the demonic trinity given the fact that he is a false prophet and called "The Beast." The Beast is the main villain in the book of Revelation in the Bible. The Beast is basically just Satan.
I never knew Joe Biden was a actor
Hahahaha!!!
Now he's a comedy actor.
He had thirty six years training in the US Senate.
His butt's been wiped
And they let him enter in the white house.
Let this be a lesson to everyone. If you're out playing in your front yard and it immediately starts raining and you see an old man in a black suit and hat that singing and coming towards your house RUN INSIDE AND LOCK YOUR DOOR!!!
4:41 "Because I'm smart..... and I'm your friend..... and I know what you are thinking." Always gave me the most chills
Same here! While I always found this scene to be powerful & more intense than audiences at the time (including myself) seemed to realize....I also recognize WHY Reverend Kane is so scary. Its because he is NOT always an in-your-face Evil. He is charming, friendly, congenial, innocent, even shockingly-soothing (see how Stephen almost believes Kane is his friend!). That is truly scary to have that ability. He even has the ability himself to reign his own Evil in....& walk away calmly. Wow!
Julian Beck acts his socks off in this scene and makes it look effortless.
he was dying of stomach cancer during that scene.
Still scary in 2024!!!
Yeah, because he’s running the country now
That’s because we see him every day: Joe Biden

This scene is brilliant and it's also telling you something. Don't let evil in. It can only destroy you if you give it power. Evil will try and deceive you into letting it in. Be careful out there.
Well said, I agree with you
Yes definitely. As much as I wish Spielberg and hooper would have come back for this movie Brian gibson(the director) certainly is able to convey a tone of dread, intimidation, and inevitability in Kane. Down to the music being kind of eerie, but comfortably going down, like the music is reflecting Steven’s mind as his guard is being let down whilst a snake is inching closer.
lol
Yes. If evil actually HAD power, it wouldnt be *asking*, it would just walk right in….
@@NoUnknown-y5p True! Sometimes I believe evil does have power.....but it clearly depends on the circumstance. Also, there appear to be other factors. Free-will is the biggest one. According to some lore (and even hinted at in the Bible), that Evil just 'loves an invitation'. Not only is it easier, of course....but it seems to make Evil more powerful....AND possibly diminish the victim's ability to ask Good for help. The credo sounds like: You invited it in, so you may be on your own.
One of THE creepiest characters in all of Cinematic history.
True
If I was a casting agent, that man would have been playing every creepy horror there was.
He was amazing in this role. The best. Sadly, he was dying of cancer, and not long for this world.
@@sgaiv2 and he passed before this was released but I find it interesting that he got cast in quite a few things before his death, including Miami Vice, and 9 & a half weeks …. I read that a documentary came out about his theatre work around 1983 so that could have something to do with it
I read up on the actor, his name was Julian Beck, sadly he had been diagnosed with stomach cancer three years before. What I respect about him is he was able to take his illness and make it work for him in this seen and his overall performance. It’s cemented him into pop-culture history when he otherwise might’ve been forgotten. Now that is what I call ingenuity, I have a lot of respect for that. Following his death he was posthumously inducted into the theater Hall of Fame.
@@jaybowden2658 Yes. Prior to his movie and television roles, in addition to traditional theatre, Julian Beck was part of a traveling theatre troupe called "The Living Theatre" that would put on live public displays of performance art. Much of it pretty intense, acting wise. He was a tour-de-force in his healthy years.
@@emirlsanchos6302 I already knew this but thank you for sharing anyway
Looks like Joe Biden. When he was healthier and could put sentences together 😂
He's scarier than any slasher killer because he literally represents the Satanic trinity. The Beast, the False Prophet, and the Red Dragon. He is called "The Beast" in the movies as we already know. Definitely one of my favorite horror movie villains.

It's amazing he has the strength to do this scene. He looks like he has a few days to live.
He died before finishing the movie.
Also, I learned recently that Kane the character was supposed to look 'more undead/demonic' halfway through the scene.....once he realized Stephen might not be allowing him to come inside.
I got the feeling, that this scene was recorded in 2 parts. The first part his face looked normal, and i think part 2 (4:15)was recorderd a few weeks or months later , his cancer looks more progressed , his face is much skinnier
@@JohnDeBruyne-e4z Not sure of the timeline, but I DO know that Kane was deliberately made to look skinnier & more demonic & undead in the second-half of the scene....it was to show that he was getting furious that Stephen wasn't going to let him in....so more of the 'evil' began to come out.

He was barely 60 when he filmed this. Very dedicated actor to power through with his illness.
A young Joe Biden starting his acting career.
😂😂😂😂 Thanks I needed that laugh
Such a great scene.. RIP Julian Beck.
Just as creepy as Biden.
Some of these scenes must have been shot weeks apart as Julian looks terribly ill in some of them, especially when he is talking through the screen door. If you see him in the Cotton Club a few years before this he's healthy and looks completely different. What a performance. The part where he changes his facial expression from anger to indifferent disappointment at 5:50 is stellar acting. He haunted my dreams for years when I was a kid after seeing this on TV. Poltergeist II would have been so much better if he could have filmed more scenes as it pretty much goes downhill from here when they switch to using effects to replace him. May he rest in peace.
I thought that at first too, until I read that the makeup crew actually did the scene in sequence....but applied more & more makeup to Kane as the scenes were filmed...to make him look more 'undead' & also more demonic. Then, when Stephen rebuffs him.....they make him look more 'human' again.
His dentures were the scariest thing about this scene.
