Altar linens: The Purificator - used to wipe the chalice between communicants, also for wiping the chalice after it is cleansed; lavabo towel - used with the finger bowl when the priest washes his fingers during Mass; Corporal - used to cover the chalice during Mass. A lot of these cloths have similar names in most languages because they're all derived from the latin names.
Most likely that and the various priest vestments were kept in it as well, used to be an altar boy, back room where the priest dress for mass had a similar big drawer cabinet.
Yes (though the corporal goes under the chalice and patten to catch fragments: the chalice is covered by a pall and veil). My French is poor, but as you say many have similar names because of the Latin connection. Given that, most of the first label appears to be for vestments (albs, amice, cincture (cordons d' aubes - cords of albs?), rochets (aka surplice), etc). The top drawer is things specific to "dressing the chalice" - corporal, pall, burse. I suspect that other drawer labels would have things like étoles (stoles), chasubles and (possibly) dalmatiques since these cabinets traditionally had large flat tops because it was common practice in the past for the sacristan to layout all the vestments before mass.
And the aube is an alb in English - the white nightshirt-like garment a priest wears under the other robes. They can be fairly plain or have lots of lace with sacred emblems.
Oh, good, someone else typed this all up! There should be some huge fairly shallow drawers somewhere in the mix for the larger vestments - it's better to lay heavy velvet and silk flat,
The heritage guys where I live screw a bit of Perspex neatly over old labels such as in your island cupboards to preserve it and allow cleaning…keep up the good work billy 👍🏻
Being in charge of the ceremonies in one of the largest Roman Catholic churches in London the instant I saw the vesting bench (for that is what it is called in Catholic sacristies) I immediately knew it was for vestments and altar linens for Mass, Benediction etc.. it’s a lovely thing.
That ceiling is a killer of a job....suspending your arm above your shoulder in the relatively tight spaces between those beams is bloody hard graft ! Well done Simon.
What a find! I'm so glad that you are taking the lowered ceilings out to reveal those beautiful beams. 😊 This is going to be a spectacular hotel. Of course it is. It's one of your renovations.
After the renos this room is going to be the one with high rate because of the window and ceiling! Ahahaha! It can be a beautiful Suite to rent for few days.
Even though Ryan’s now having the upstairs apartment I think he should help renovate the downstairs one. He’ll be learning how to do the trade work, which can only be of use later on, plus he’ll be giving you a hand (debatable) as a thank you for your generosity.
If and when he’s ready, I’d love to hear about Janis’s journey to get where he is today. He seems to have lived quite a bit for a young man. I’m so completely impressed with his dedication to learning from Simon, how he takes initiative and how he has excelled. As a grandmother, I feel very proud of this remarkable young man. Billy you’re not just renovating a building, you’re building a life for the people who work with you. Some days I’m moved to tears.
In watching Stephanie’s recent video about their work with the Grand Salon, she mentioned the lack of insulation between the Salon and the bedrooms above with their plaster and beam construction. She talked about the amount of noise between floors. This came to mind when looking at the ceiling you discovered in the bedroom. It would be interesting to do a little test to see how much sound travels between the kitchen and your test bedroom, and then again between #13 and the bedroom above - both before and after the drop ceiling is removed. If the waste pipes are still intact, you might do a flush test as well even though it would mean hauling a few gallons of water upstairs. Interesting find about the cabinet! I love seeing how it all ties together.
You are right Billy, Ryan should learn as much as he can about renovations. It’s always good to know how to do things yourself. Very cool ceiling in the bedroom!
Great discovery Billy! Major progress at the convent this week with plastering and apartment renovation. Very interesting to hear the history of the large storage unit that will be placed in the kitchen. Have a good weekend.❤️🙏
Really like Simon. He has such a calm and positive demeanor. He's a great teacher. Patient and focuses on strengths. Billy, you seem very mature in how you tolerate Ryan's chronic indecision. Like a true friend you seem to see the bigger picture. My wife and I very much admire you and your family. NOW.... CRACK ON! 😁
I guess he understand very well that Ryan have a lots to think with the work, the architecture, the future deco, etc. I guess I will be the same in this circonstances. With our beautiful brand new house, it was hard to fix my mind in a hurry for the painter, to choice the final subtility of colors.
I was already chomping at the bit to see what you would do with the cells. Now I can envision greatness. Alex's camera work is astonishing. The shots he got of the woodwork of the bell tower are just breathtaking. I like all the little detail shots of just old items on shelves and such. It adds ambiance. Billy, you look so much more relaxed. Good job finding Alex. 🧡
Alex is fantastic, but I think he originally came to help Michael with filming (hoping to see some videos from Michael again soon, so perhaps Alex will be going to the Chateau soon?)
From someone who lives in Florida, where it is extremely hot in summer, I can tell you that the best time to water your plants is in the wee hours of the morning. That way, the water doesn't evaporate as much with the heat, so you can use a little less, and the plants have a chance to dry out a bit during the daytime so they don't get fungal infections as badly as if they were watered in the late afternoon.
Im so glad the large "island" has found a new home and use in the convent, it's were it should be. Billy i think you need to get Rick to add landscaping cloth and mulching around the plants, it will keep down the weeds and help retain moisture for the crazy heat waves we're all experiencing. Im really excited at the thought of such high ceilings in the bedroom suites. Going to be amazing. Have a wonderful weekend.
Billy dont water your plants in the heat of the day as the water will evaporate before the plants have sufficient, either do it early morning or late at night, a mulch would be good for them too. If theres stones or concrete over their roots the roots will get super hot so they'll need extra water.
Every time you discover something that has been covered up, it’s in good condition, but I’m always wondering…..Why did they cover that beautiful thing up? Good for you revealing it all. Blessings
Do you mulch your planting beds in France? That would help keep moisture in the dirt so the plants don’t dry out so quickly. Helps with weed control and gives your landscaping a more finished look.
The light fixture in #13 is so retro, which is extremely popular right now. You should sell them if and when you take them down, because you could get $100 or more. Love the cabinets they will look awesome installed. Simon is a gem, glad you have him
It is wonderful to know that yourself( Billy) and Simon , have taken Ryan and Yanis under your collective wings and have chosen to educate and share your construction skills and experiences with them, giving them knowledge and skills for their futures. Education is the key to a successful and happy future 👍 to all of you.
Billy, fwiw, seeing the convent returned to its origins is so satisfying. High ceilings with wood beams are oh so charming, so I’m enthused you’re going to remove the dropped ceilings! I saw a video the other day about repairing old wood doors. As I watched this video, I thought of the wood doors to each cell. Rather than removing the old doors and replacing with new, would you consider raising the doorways to a total height of roughly 2,5 meters? This would require the skills of a master cabinet maker to join a piece of the same wood type to the bottom and to refinish the doors, but imagine how beautiful it would be to reuse the original doors! You are recreating a lovely old building and that’s exciting to witness. Thanks for sharing your journey with us all.
Here is a quick reference guide as to the items listed at 1:35: Pales et corporaux - Altar cloths. The corporal is placed under le chalice and the paten (dish that holds the priest’s larger host bread and a few general holy hosts wafers. Amict - is a square or rectangular piece of cloth (18 inches by 12 inches or square foot) with 2 tie-backs that is worn around the neck and over the shoulders (usually on either side) - either linen, cotton or wool - that keeps the priest’s sweat off his ecclesiastic vestments. Coletins & Bourses du salut - a small cloth bag (3 in x 8 in) that holds the money for the Sunday’s tithe. The parishioner would come to the Sacristy to ask for a new one. Inside was a small piece of paper or cloth that was embroidered with a prayer regarding tithing. As most people of the 16th to 19th century did not make much money, the “tithe bag” received a few pennies if people were lucky and careful. The bags were labeled “bourse du Salut” as they guaranteed the person’s rising to heaven at their passing but before they could, 10% of the daily/weekly/monthly salary or income revenue was put in first before feeding the family then the head of the family would open the bag during the service and when it came time to do the “collection” tithe. We need to remember that people did not earn much in those days. Aubes: a vestment that is worn by deacons, priests, bishops, cardinals and popes under the colorful or intricately embellished priest’s chasuble. Cordons d’aube - the cotton or hemp cord that Is used to keep the alb in place on the priest’s body. In some religious orders, a “capuchin” knot is tied at the end of it and depending on the twists or “rope turns” of the knot, denotes the rank of the person in the hierarchy. Aubes de tulle: a very light, tulle alb that is richly embroidered with religious symbols such as vines, grapes, bread buns, goblets of wine, chalice, paten, flowers, cross, etc. Rochers are actually “Rochets” (a typewriter error - r - is often typed instead of “t” - choir or Sanctuary robes only worn by deacons, bishops, cardinals and a few prelates (high RC dignitaries). It has the same shape and form of the alb but its length stops at the knees. The edges of the sleeves normally carry the color of the chasuble. It is worn at religious ceremonies that are not masses - such as vespers, baptisms, etc. Aubes d’enfant de chœur - these are the albs worn by altar boys.
Gardeners tip. Water your plants early morning or late in the evening or they can be burned by the sun. Those times are the optimal time for you plants to take in the water too. That lampshade is a collectors item. What a great find with the ceiling. It is beautiful. Happy for you Billy. Thank you. May you all please take care and stay safe. Louisa. 👏👏👏❤❤❤🤩🤩🤩
Billy the work never stops 😮 I am in awe of your work ethic. Good on all the people helping out at the Convent, more hands make your efforts progress beautifully. Cheers to you all. 🥰🤗👍just a little additional note, please mulch your garden beds at the Convent this will help retain moisture in the soil. 🙏🏻
It is remarkable that the convent has remained in such good condition, considering it was vacant for a lot of years. Except for the bowed and possibly rotten large beam in the ceiling adjecent to the chapel, the structure is quite sound. That makes your renovations/ restorations a bit easier. I’m looking forward to watching how it all unfolds.
you mentioned in another video the serious cracks from the lift shaft any work you do to the rooms will be effected if you leave the lift till last you may have to remove it and do major works to fix problems and could effect any a joining rooms you need to see what needs doing as the floors are effected and could be a major job to fix
Simon I a great asset to the team!! I hope he’s around for good while He’s so good at presentation and explaining. What a master professional ! Tannins is one fortunate person to be trained by Simon!
You have a wonderful piece of furniture, Billy. The drawers are wide and deep to likely hold the priests' chasubles too. Purificators are the "holy napkins" used when serving communion, the wine in particular. Can't remember the other French names. I just love the old church history. In the US, we don't get to see such wonderful pieces. Ours aren't that old!
Good afternoon from the sunny SF Bay Area. Simon is indeed amazing, I'm so surprised to learn how many of you Brits have settled in France and people with such highly developed skills. California is also being swept up into a massive heat wave. The Bay Area is supposed to go up to 107 in some pockets. Here in Concord east of the City we are supposed to reach 104, if we're lucky. Yikes. Be well, stay cool. Love to all.
Hello Billy! When you came out of that cabinet I had to laugh 😅 The ceilings in kitchen look fantastic and finding the beams upstairs in that bedroom was amazing. Great find Billy! Have a great weekend!😊❤
Love the furniture piece for the kitchen island. I would top it with a huge piece of marble for food preparation. The ceiling in the apartment is sooooo beautiful!
Just as I thought! A sacristy vesting case! Billy!I know that you returned the window on the left of the facade to its original doorway, but will keep the symmetry on the blocked up right hand side?
Like the new opening shots, just wish they were labelled so they can be easier to locate in the convent. Would love to be able to match the pictures to the actual location.
What a super end to an exceptional week of work at the convent! Love the ceilings in the 1st floor “cells”. The rooms will be amazing when the false ceilings come down and the “real” ceilings are exposed again. Look forward to seeing that happen. Hope you have a lovely stress free and relxing weekend!
I have a feeling Billy and family are people who greatly help out a growing community of people with quality skills. Whoever they may be have always impressed 😊
Hi Billy, just a suggestion for your gardens, that being to mulch your gardens. It helps conserve water, keeps moisture in & keeps the weeds at bay. Happy gardening. 😁👍 🌻⚘🌼🌷
Billy I think the drop ceilings were installed in the 70’s. Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s I remember many businesses were lowering their ceilings and installing smaller windows in the 70’s to save on heating and air conditioning. Prior to air conditioning many building used high ceilings and natural air flow through windows to keep building cool in the summer.
Wow what a fantastic building wish it was mine ,I love the convent and can't wait for your daily videos .Please don't ever sell it because its a gem Billy you sure done the right thing purchasing it.I might even buy a Chateau myself in a year ,I just love the countryside .Love to all xx
The ceiling work is looking great! Bravo Simon et Yannis! Nice discovery with the cupboard units🙂 and the room ceiling is amazing! It was definitely a heating cost saving measure for the convent. Happy weekend!
Billy i want to thank for sharing with us and walking us threw the amazing work your doing on restoring the Convent. your restoring history! God Bless you and your family.
Really enjoying the show - all the different characters, shine with their own story lines - love it! Billy your generous spirit attracts like minded people & makes me remember there are lovely, supportive & trustworthy people in the world. One suggestion - I think your garden could do with some mulch. It would keep the weeds at bay & keep moisture in during the hot times.
The newly exposed ceiling in one of the bedrooms looks amazing! If they are all taken care of like that you should have no trouble renovating them. Sorry you couldn't go to the pub but cheers and here's virtual mug from me! 🍺💚Have a great weekend.
So wonderful the cabinets for the kitchen have ended up being back in the Convent, definitely where they're meant to be. Love the new find upstairs with the amazing hidden ceiling.
Absolutely beautiful discovery Billy 🕌Thanks to you Alex sweetheart 😘 Simon and Yannis make a Brilliant Team my goodness 😎😎👍 Everything is coming along so well It's making for the best videos actually... So thank you Billy Yah see you Monday Have a great weekend everyone Take care and stay safe 🙏🏼❤
Love how the kitchen ceiling is turning out! Billy, you are going to have to stop making all these amazing discoveries - it always mean more work- but they sure will look stunning when done!!!
Water at night or end of day because it allows the water to seep in and feed plants better because it’s not evaporating to the daylight heat immediately.
What a fantastic discovery of the furniture piece for the Convent kitchen! It is wonderful that it came from a religious beginning, to eventually end up in the beautiful Convent.
You need to get olla watering pots. They're ceramic, porous pots you bury near plants you want to keep hydrated, and you fill with water. As the soil around them dries out, it pulls moisture from the pot. That way you don't have to keep coming back all the time to constantly check the plants in a heatwave.
I would love to have the opportunity to renovate and style some of those rooms, as long as the drop ceilings could be pulled down. I would want to work on it for as many hours as possibly a day to achieve the finished result, provided I could live in it.That would be one of the main things on my bucket list. Ryan just doesn’t really realise what a wonderful opportunity he has been given. B W from Australia
Billy, just a thought, I am a backyard gardener and my plants do so much better whether it's hot or cold with mulch. Mulching will keep the plant's roots and soil protected. Less water is used and the soil stays friable. I lay mulch on the soil around the plants in autumn.
Wonderful episode! I loved all of the work and the discovery ceiling. Those doors are so tiny but beautiful, how can you reuse them? Thank you all for making and sharing this video! 😊
I’m a priest in the Church of England. Regular churches usually have a smaller version to store priestly robes flat, especially if they use the chasubles (like a coloured poncho). Keeping them flat preserves the embroidery. Then the top is used to lay out the robes for a service so the ministers know what they are supposed to be wearing that day. I now work in a cathedral where we have a much bigger version as here are more ministers. So I’m confident yours is from a cathedral where they’ve installed something newer
I think the plasterer is a terrific teacher. Kind, supportive, and thorough in his instruction. Lucky Janus
Oh, good, someone else typed this all up! There should be some huge fairly shallow drawers somewhere in the mix for the larger vestments - it's better to lay heavy velvet and silk flat,
Thanks for the info. I had no idea.
Seal and preserve the labels. Another tip of the hat to a life of service.
The heritage guys where I live screw a bit of Perspex neatly over old labels such as in your island cupboards to preserve it and allow cleaning…keep up the good work billy 👍🏻
Brilliant idea!!!
Being in charge of the ceremonies in one of the largest Roman Catholic churches in London the instant I saw the vesting bench (for that is what it is called in Catholic sacristies) I immediately knew it was for vestments and altar linens for Mass, Benediction etc.. it’s a lovely thing.
Remarkably it's back in a place it sort of belongs!
That ceiling is a killer of a job....suspending your arm above your shoulder in the relatively tight spaces between those beams is bloody hard graft ! Well done Simon.
Billy you are the way to 300k subscribers, Halleluja. Come on Fans let’s give him a big push. It’s costing a lot to refurbish this old Lady. ❤❤❤❤
It's so nice to see how well kept the ceilings are. I think you're protecting it for another 250 years or more. Much respect for your love of history.
I would probably keep the lowered ceilings in bedrooms, but have high ceilings in the rest of the building.
@@A.MartinSleeping in a room with high ceilings is very peaceful!
Simon and yanis make a good team.great to see.
Even though Ryan’s now having the upstairs apartment I think he should help renovate the downstairs one. He’ll be learning how to do the trade work, which can only be of use later on, plus he’ll be giving you a hand (debatable) as a thank you for your generosity.
Yeah, said that myself, yesterday. I'd definitely make sure that it was a learning job.
He needs more skills for sure.
I thought the same thing, unless he has a disability we don't know about!
Besides, he's the one who destroyed it...he'll learn why you don't demo that way! 😂
Even if he never uses it himself he’ll have the knowledge of how something should be done and will know if someone is blowing him a bunch of smoke.
Simon is an amazing teacher! Yanis is such a quick learner and blessed to have a teacher like Simon! Billy, you are changing lives! God bless you!❤
Billy is getting what Ryan’s got…crawling through the cupboard rather than walking around it 😂.
Great hideout
Can you imagine his boys playing hide and seek😊
If and when he’s ready, I’d love to hear about Janis’s journey to get where he is today. He seems to have lived quite a bit for a young man. You are right Billy, Ryan should learn as much as he can about renovations. It’s always good to know how to do things yourself.
Very cool ceiling in the bedroom!
Opening up the full height of those windows will bring a whole new level of elegance to each room.
Such a huge and grand place even in the rafters. Love the intro.
Billy, have you considered a "drip" system for the plant beds? Can also be put on a timer. Will eliminate you having to water.
Great discovery Billy! Major progress at the convent this week with plastering and apartment renovation. Very interesting to hear the history of the large storage unit that will be placed in the kitchen. Have a good weekend.❤️🙏
Beautifully shot! Perfect music choice and volume. Thank you.
I think it is great that you are restoring close to the original building and keeping it that way. Have a great day

You should add mulch to your garden beds which will cut back with your watering, help keep the weeds down and help nourish the plants
Do you mulch your planting beds in France? That would help keep moisture in the dirt so the plants don’t dry out so quickly. Helps with weed control and gives your landscaping a more finished look.

What a great discovery again 👍😎🐕🦺🐈⬛
You have a wonderful piece of furniture, Billy. The drawers are wide and deep to likely hold the priests' chasubles too. Purificators are the "holy napkins" used when serving communion, the wine in particular. Can't remember the other French names. I just love the old church history. In the US, we don't get to see such wonderful pieces. Ours aren't that old!
Tusen takk for videoen. 👍🤗👍
I'm loving the idea of raising the ceiling heights back to the original. It will make all the rooms seem larger.
Narnia, immaculate ceilings, vintage lights, cool info, and real nice people, what a video!
Simon is a amazing man! The room is coming together! ❤. Crack on !
Like the new opening shots, just wish they were labelled so they can be easier to locate in the convent. Would love to be able to match the pictures to the actual location.
Have a great weekend Billy and crew and thank you so very much for today’s journey. 🇨🇦
Wonderful video work! How do their arms hold up doing the ceiling? Looking amazing!
I have a feeling Billy and family are people who greatly help out a growing community of people with quality skills. Whoever they may be have always impressed 😊
Love it that you will be able to see the original ceilings and the huge windows. LOVE IT!! : ) ❤
Hi Billy, just a suggestion for your gardens, that being to mulch your gardens. It
helps conserve water, keeps moisture in & keeps the weeds at bay. Happy gardening.
😁👍
🌻⚘🌼🌷
Billy, lay the studs on the grass with the warped side down - you might get some straightened boards
Totally awesome that a piece of furniture made its way to the convent!
Wonderful preservation , due to limewash. Beautful cealiings . Great adventures lie ahead.Thankyou.
The newly exposed ceiling in one of the bedrooms looks amazing! If they are all taken care of like that you should have no trouble renovating them. Sorry you couldn't go to the pub but cheers and here's virtual mug from me! 🍺💚Have a great weekend.
I’m glad for you that you’ve got simon there! just that bit of the ceiling done already makes it look like it’s all coming together!
What awesome discoveries today, Billy! Thanks for sharing! The kitchen is continuing to look better and better!
So wonderful the cabinets for the kitchen have ended up being back in the Convent, definitely where they're meant to be. Love the new find upstairs with the amazing hidden ceiling.
Absolutely beautiful discovery Billy 🕌Thanks to you Alex sweetheart 😘
Simon and Yannis make a Brilliant
Team my goodness 😎😎👍
Everything is coming along so well
It's making for the best videos actually... So thank you Billy
Yah see you Monday
Have a great weekend everyone
Take care and stay safe 🙏🏼❤
Love how the kitchen ceiling is turning out! Billy, you are going to have to stop making all these amazing discoveries - it always mean more work- but they sure will look stunning when done!!!
The kitchen is looking fabulous!!
The kitchen furniture was meant to be. It waited for you to come along and adopt it.
That ceiling is magnificent and I'm so inspired by Simon's instruction, that I'm looking for a plaster project!
You need to get olla watering pots. They're ceramic, porous pots you bury near plants you want to keep hydrated, and you fill with water. As the soil around them dries out, it pulls moisture from the pot. That way you don't have to keep coming back all the time to constantly check the plants in a heatwave.
Teach Ryan all you can. Will be of great help to him. People learn better when it’s a hand up not a hand out.
The music intro just sets the scene perfectly .. what are we going to find today 🤔 Billy in the cupboard for one 😆 .. ooh those ceiling beams .. 👏
The convent is going to look amazing with all the work you're putting into it. I'm always looking forward to more videos
Best to water in hot weather early morning or after suns gone down.
as water on leaves in really 🔥 weather burns them
I would love to have the opportunity to renovate and style some of those rooms, as long as the drop ceilings could be pulled down.
From years of experience, seeing planting with and without mulch, it's by far the best thing anyone can do, almost regardless of the material used.
Slick, polished, professional and educational that's just the first 30 +second, well done you!
It's very tiring to be working overhead for such a long time.
You're doing a great job billy. The workers you have and ryan are doing great.
You can do it Yanis!!!!! Simon you are so kind, not everyone would take the time to teach their trade to someone these days.
I love watching the renovations of this convent…….❤️❤️. Thank you for bringing us along……..💋💋👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
That ceiling is beautiful. Amazing what someone covered, up guess it was to conserve on heating.
Much easier to heat, clean and decorate for increasingly elderly nuns.😊
You should Ring the Bell every Friday at the end of the day. Please.
Wonderful episode! I loved all of the work and the discovery ceiling. Those doors are so tiny but beautiful, how can you reuse them? Thank you all for making and sharing this video! 😊
Yes Billy good idea to water your plants because the plants really heat up next to those stone walls which dries the soil out more quickly.
Adding and mixing through some compost would help with water retention too.
You're part of a community that shares thier knowledge, time and talents so easily. What a fantastic thing to be part of😊❤
I’m a priest in the Church of England.
