I didn't even realize G&W had so much hate. The worst I see is in quickplay sometimes where they abuse parachute/dair or spam dsmash, but even I'll admit that 1) you should be able to counterplay that if you know what you're doing and 2) a whole bunch of other characters online do that too.

To anyone maining a “low tier”, G&W was a low tier till Maister started getting big. You want your character to not be low tier? Show the world what that character can do, trust me if that is your best character it’s a great motivate to bring(Jr main here)

It's literally the most awkward thing when the person you're playing with just goes like "Man, all you have to do is X" or "Why the fuck did that hit me that hitbox is so broken" or even things like "Why hasn't your character been nerfed yet?" God these people irritate me to no end, but usually I just agree and just let them vent. After watching this video, it feels good knowing that I was kinda doing the right thing, but it's still irritating either way.
I’m a Ness and Ice Climber main. Ness in 64 and Sma4h, Icies in Melee and brawl, and both in Ultimate. I know character hate more than anybody and while I’ve been able to embrace some of the criticism over time, it still feels like my work is discredited for who I play. It’s comforting to know that others feel the same way. Thank you.

It’s so funny because Melee is so spoiled with an aggressive meta and fast offensive characters that are fun to watch that one defensive character triggers the fuck out of them. Meanwhile in ultimate you have a good chunk of the roster and top tiers that play much more defensively and campy.

As a Palu and Lucina main I’ve been dealing with the hate for a year and a half and it’s been so painful, I love playing them and just can’t understand why I’ve ever gotten hate. Just let me enjoy the game. Even with my distaste towards Joker, I can’t understand intensive character hate to such a major degree as I experience.
I dislike how people hate certain characters without bothering to understand them. I’m a Young Link Main and, regardless of whether or not I actually zone my opponent, they blame it on the “unfun” character. My Young Link is harder to play then 80% of my local scene’s mains, but people automatically judge on the character select screen.
Imagine thinking Peach mains are carried, TRY just TRY using her and mastering her tech. Her movement is by FAR the hardest part btw, which EVERYONE overlooks just because her float cancels combos are “broken”.

I think most hate comes from gimmicks. No one wants to lose to “the same thing” every time they play against a certain character. Which is why Bayo is still more hated than people like Falco, her entire play style is basically a gimmick and that isn’t any more fun than dealing with Palu nair
SamuraiC I prefer playing against bayo than falco because I know that the bayo has pit more time into mastering a difficult character and know that if I loose that I’ve been simply outplayed
i have switched characters like a hundred million times because my training partner is the #1 whiner worldwide. it does get to you to have someone CONSTANTLY whining at you. i play sheik now. she’s the 2nd most fun character to me (only behind zss) so i guess it’s a happy ending. at least he doesn’t complain about sheik as much as he complains about literally every other character in the game

Raccet Kun young link would be a little tougher but just try zoning him with your projectiles and faking going in. Don’t fear him because he’s easy to hit so play aggressive

I suppose you can go about it that way, but as a person who wants to play a game and wants to have fun, I play characters that are intersting or atleast put a spin on them. I also want the other player to have fun, I don't mind getting 3 stocked if it was fun or interesting. Seeing almost all Ness players down-throw F-air gets pretty boring after playing the game for an hour. The competitive scene is different though, winning is winning. Does that excuse 'lame' playstyles? To some degree yeah, but if I've got the choice to watch an Olimar camp half of the game or watch Cpt. Falcon dittos, I'm definitely watching the latter.
I remember saying I play bowser, not maining him and someone called me a filthy bowser player when the only character I potentially main or have the most fun with is Byleth. There are 2 reasons for it: Byleth is the most hated DLC and I love Fire Emblem as a series, although as a gamer who's played most available FE games it does have it's problems as a game but I love it very much regardless. I feel kind of bad, becuase I am guily of doing this. I really struggle against Jigglypuff, and hate fighting her. I just happen to have 2 good Puff players in my region who embarrass me regularly, and one of them takes the character hate to heart. It's honestly just me blowing off steam, as you say, and it's all on me to learn how to deal with the character.
They’re still annoying to fight, and rest set ups exist. So I agree it’s frustrating. Puffs ground game is poo poo pee pee, just use anti airs if your character has them :)
Or just counterpick if their mains lose THAT hard, every s tier has a trash matchup, Game and Watch makes fun of Pikachu, Sonic and Mega Man Spank Joker (Mega Might also have an advantage against Peach), Shulk probably gets rekt by Pika and he prob rekts G&W, etc.
I never got mad the few times I went to tournaments. I think it's a lot easier to get mad online not only because of the latency stuff, but also because you don't get the sense that you're playing against another real person. Something to occasionally remind yourself of during distancing, I guess.
Around 8:48 this mentality of "they hate me so i must be good" only applies when the game is balanced, like smash ultimate. In smash 4 for example, getting hated for playing bayo or cloud wasn't a sign of you getting better, it was just you playing a broken character that you can't really do anything about. On top of that, NOT everyone has the same character selection screen, a lot of people don't buy the DLC's, and these characters are all good. Another example for an unbalanced game is for honor. There's shit like 50/50's which are just broken. You're forced to guess, which doesn't sound too bad, but in case you don't know for honor, just imagine this: a character, that has an attack that you can ONLY parry or dodge. If you guess wrong, you get hit. You can't attack fast enough, jumping doesn't work, nothing does. Only this. And it's spammable. Until you're dead. And there's like 4 characters who can do this in for honor (out of a total of like 30 characters). Back to my original point, getting hate because you spam said 50/50 is obviously not a sign of you improving, but of you playing a brain dead, op character.

I don’t hate on characters, but when I spend six minutes against a game and watch who only uses oil panic, up b, fair, and dair, I am miffed to say the least.
The reason I hate sonic is not because he's op or anything, but his roll. I would punish sonics doing their auto aim roll like 100 times and they'll keep spamming it like the brain dead monkeys they are. Same with ness, bowser, mac etc. Most people play them because they're monkeys and only spam a button, then after you punish them for the 100th time, you'll think they'll switch their gameplan or at least press another button, but nope. They'll continue to decrease the human race's IQ level.

Not necessarily directed to you, but Ness is one of if not the most hated character in the game. Side b and up b are easily spammable and he has a really strong back throw (which is fine). If you are just going to main Ness in general, I recommend you to not spam these moves and maybe be a bit more creative with your play style. The reason people dont like Ness is because of mostly strictly side b and up b and how people abuse it. If you simply just dont spam these moves, then people should have no reason to hate you and are just salty they lost to you. Or there's the other option which is to just play the character how you see fit, even if that means spam, but you will get hate. In most games, spamming is frowned upon as it seems so brain dead. This game is no exception.

As someone who's been maining G&W since the game came out, it's been wild to go from being made fun of for playing a bad low tier to playing a very hated high/top tier. I always insisted he was good but no one listened until Maister proved what he can do.

I'm surprised you didn't mention Esam in this. Pikachu is arguably the best character in the game with no discrete weaknesses besides his weight, so a lot of people give Esam shit for maining him. Esam's strategy is pretty much just acknowledging that "yes, Pikachu is very good, but I'm also good for being able to use him like this."
I honestly think ESAM is one of the few people who have really showcased Pikachu's true potential and got other people to get on that train of thought, but I think that's less about the character and more so that he's been so ride-or-die with Pikachu that he has worked his ass off to prove that character's high viability; it's not like Pikachu has 0 weaknesses, people are just willing to overlook them because they see how Pikachu looks at a top level.

Picked up smash two days ago. Started playing inkling because she’s so fun to dash around with and her recovery is nice for noobs. After being told she’s broken and I shouldn’t play her it just made me depressed and only wanna play against cpus
Inkling has a straight forward gameplan but they are in no way broken. IMO they are a bit hard to use for noobs too because effective Inklings need to lab combos and kill confirms. So, yeah, that hate is definitely not justified.
My philosophy: (When it comes to competitive settings such as tournaments), all is fair in [love and] war. If it's in the game, then it's fair use (according to tourney rules). If they lost, then it's their fault for failing. I can understand someone getting salty in friendlies if you spammed moves, wobbled, or timed them out. But competition is entirely about winning. Win however you can (so long as it's not against the tourney rules, such as shoulder-checking your competitor irl). We all agree to play Smash competitively. If it's in the game, then suck it up and overcome it. If you can't, then your opponent is better and for good reason. They played the game better. You can literally use the same strat. If you don't feel like "stooping that low," then the only thing you're winning is your own mental throne. Everyone else saw how you lost, lol. So if you want to win, then learn the game, as "stupid" as it may seem to you. Competition is about winning. Don't be a sore loser, and... basically, git gud.

Dedede’s Gordos aren’t super easy “Press side-b to win” spam items. One, you need to know how to properly throw your Gordos to trap your opponent (angles, snap gordos or standard gordos). Two, if I become too repetitive with them they can be reflected at me for a good amount of damage. This can additionally lead to me being trapped in a massive combo since Dedede is absolute combo food. Three, I need to to use them in conjunction with Dedede’s other moves to get a kill (such as bair). I remember fighting a Twitch streamer who started getting pissed at me for using a lot of Gordos and threatened to kick me from the arena lmao. Jealous of Dedede’s glory :)
True story that is one of my favorite (casual, non-tourney) anecdotes: I was playing an online 1v1 on a stream as Simon Belmont. One of my favorite for-fun ways to play Simon is only using the whip. I won against a Dark Samus player, who - COMPLETELY SERIOUSLY - complained that I only won because I wasn't using projectiles. It goes to show that people can find an excuse to complain about literally anything. The way I see it, play who you want, how you want.

edge lord 5 year old because, if we’re talking at least mid to mid high level players, good Mac players will require you camp them out. Nobody wants to play like that, and if you try to just rush in against a Mac you can get stomped. Thus forcing you to camp to be effective

It’s so funny because Melee is so spoiled with an aggressive meta and fast offensive characters that are fun to watch that one defensive character triggers the fuck out of them. Meanwhile in ultimate you have a good chunk of the roster and top tiers that play much more defensively and campy.

As a Palu and Lucina main I’ve been dealing with the hate for a year and a half and it’s been so painful, I love playing them and just can’t understand why I’ve ever gotten hate. Just let me enjoy the game. Even with my distaste towards Joker, I can’t understand intensive character hate to such a major degree as I experience.
I dislike how people hate certain characters without bothering to understand them. I’m a Young Link Main and, regardless of whether or not I actually zone my opponent, they blame it on the “unfun” character. My Young Link is harder to play then 80% of my local scene’s mains, but people automatically judge on the character select screen.

I think most hate comes from gimmicks. No one wants to lose to “the same thing” every time they play against a certain character. Which is why Bayo is still more hated than people like Falco, her entire play style is basically a gimmick and that isn’t any more fun than dealing with Palu nair

i have switched characters like a hundred million times because my training partner is the #1 whiner worldwide. it does get to you to have someone CONSTANTLY whining at you. i play sheik now. she’s the 2nd most fun character to me (only behind zss) so i guess it’s a happy ending. at least he doesn’t complain about sheik as much as he complains about literally every other character in the game

I suppose you can go about it that way, but as a person who wants to play a game and wants to have fun, I play characters that are intersting or atleast put a spin on them.
I also want the other player to have fun, I don't mind getting 3 stocked if it was fun or interesting. Seeing almost all Ness players down-throw F-air gets pretty boring after playing the game for an hour.
The competitive scene is different though, winning is winning. Does that excuse 'lame' playstyles? To some degree yeah, but if I've got the choice to watch an Olimar camp half of the game or watch Cpt. Falcon dittos, I'm definitely watching the latter.

I remember saying I play bowser, not maining him and someone called me a filthy bowser player when the only character I potentially main or have the most fun with is Byleth. There are 2 reasons for it: Byleth is the most hated DLC and I love Fire Emblem as a series, although as a gamer who's played most available FE games it does have it's problems as a game but I love it very much regardless. I feel kind of bad, becuase I am guily of doing this. I really struggle against Jigglypuff, and hate fighting her. I just happen to have 2 good Puff players in my region who embarrass me regularly, and one of them takes the character hate to heart. It's honestly just me blowing off steam, as you say, and it's all on me to learn how to deal with the character.
They’re still annoying to fight, and rest set ups exist. So I agree it’s frustrating. Puffs ground game is poo poo pee pee, just use anti airs if your character has them :)
As a Dark Pit main, and along with every other Pit/Dark Pit main, it feels so good that i can’t be called BS or carried.

I never got mad the few times I went to tournaments. I think it's a lot easier to get mad online not only because of the latency stuff, but also because you don't get the sense that you're playing against another real person. Something to occasionally remind yourself of during distancing, I guess.

Around 8:48 this mentality of "they hate me so i must be good" only applies when the game is balanced, like smash ultimate. In smash 4 for example, getting hated for playing bayo or cloud wasn't a sign of you getting better, it was just you playing a broken character that you can't really do anything about. On top of that, NOT everyone has the same character selection screen, a lot of people don't buy the DLC's, and these characters are all good. Another example for an unbalanced game is for honor. There's shit like 50/50's which are just broken. You're forced to guess, which doesn't sound too bad, but in case you don't know for honor, just imagine this: a character, that has an attack that you can ONLY parry or dodge. If you guess wrong, you get hit. You can't attack fast enough, jumping doesn't work, nothing does. Only this. And it's spammable. Until you're dead. And there's like 4 characters who can do this in for honor (out of a total of like 30 characters). Back to my original point, getting hate because you spam said 50/50 is obviously not a sign of you improving, but of you playing a brain dead, op character.

I've gone through and learned a lot of different characters moves and tricks, so when someone says I can only win because I'm using a character as a crutch, I just beat them with dr.mario
Challenging someone to a ditto is not quite fair. You should challenge them to 2 dittos where you play both characters.
I don’t hate on characters, but when I spend six minutes against a game and watch who only uses oil panic, up b, fair, and dair, I am miffed to say the least.

The reason I hate sonic is not because he's op or anything, but his roll. I would punish sonics doing their auto aim roll like 100 times and they'll keep spamming it like the brain dead monkeys they are. Same with ness, bowser, mac etc. Most people play them because they're monkeys and only spam a button, then after you punish them for the 100th time, you'll think they'll switch their gameplan or at least press another button, but nope. They'll continue to decrease the human race's IQ level.

Not necessarily directed to you, but Ness is one of if not the most hated character in the game. Side b and up b are easily spammable and he has a really strong back throw (which is fine). If you are just going to main Ness in general, I recommend you to not spam these moves and maybe be a bit more creative with your play style. The reason people dont like Ness is because of mostly strictly side b and up b and how people abuse it. If you simply just dont spam these moves, then people should have no reason to hate you and are just salty they lost to you.
Or there's the other option which is to just play the character how you see fit, even if that means spam, but you will get hate. In most games, spamming is frowned upon as it seems so brain dead. This game is no exception.

As someone who's been maining G&W since the game came out, it's been wild to go from being made fun of for playing a bad low tier to playing a very hated high/top tier. I always insisted he was good but no one listened until Maister proved what he can do.

I'm surprised you didn't mention Esam in this. Pikachu is arguably the best character in the game with no discrete weaknesses besides his weight, so a lot of people give Esam shit for maining him. Esam's strategy is pretty much just acknowledging that "yes, Pikachu is very good, but I'm also good for being able to use him like this."
I honestly think ESAM is one of the few people who have really showcased Pikachu's true potential and got other people to get on that train of thought, but I think that's less about the character and more so that he's been so ride-or-die with Pikachu that he has worked his ass off to prove that character's high viability; it's not like Pikachu has 0 weaknesses, people are just willing to overlook them because they see how Pikachu looks at a top level.

Picked up smash two days ago. Started playing inkling because she’s so fun to dash around with and her recovery is nice for noobs. After being told she’s broken and I shouldn’t play her it just made me depressed and only wanna play against cpus
Inkling has a straight forward gameplan but they are in no way broken. IMO they are a bit hard to use for noobs too because effective Inklings need to lab combos and kill confirms. So, yeah, that hate is definitely not justified.

My philosophy:
(When it comes to competitive settings such as tournaments), all is fair in [love and] war.
If it's in the game, then it's fair use (according to tourney rules).
If they lost, then it's their fault for failing.
I can understand someone getting salty in friendlies if you spammed moves, wobbled, or timed them out. But competition is entirely about winning. Win however you can (so long as it's not against the tourney rules, such as shoulder-checking your competitor irl). We all agree to play Smash competitively. If it's in the game, then suck it up and overcome it. If you can't, then your opponent is better and for good reason. They played the game better. You can literally use the same strat. If you don't feel like "stooping that low," then the only thing you're winning is your own mental throne. Everyone else saw how you lost, lol. So if you want to win, then learn the game, as "stupid" as it may seem to you.
Competition is about winning. Don't be a sore loser, and... basically, git gud.
When you main Joker, you have to be comfortable in knowing you have an "I win" meter and that people will call you out for it

Dedede’s Gordos aren’t super easy “Press side-b to win” spam items. One, you need to know how to properly throw your Gordos to trap your opponent (angles, snap gordos or standard gordos). Two, if I become too repetitive with them they can be reflected at me for a good amount of damage. This can additionally lead to me being trapped in a massive combo since Dedede is absolute combo food. Three, I need to to use them in conjunction with Dedede’s other moves to get a kill (such as bair). I remember fighting a Twitch streamer who started getting pissed at me for using a lot of Gordos and threatened to kick me from the arena lmao.

True story that is one of my favorite (casual, non-tourney) anecdotes:
I was playing an online 1v1 on a stream as Simon Belmont. One of my favorite for-fun ways to play Simon is only using the whip. I won against a Dark Samus player, who - COMPLETELY SERIOUSLY - complained that I only won because I wasn't using projectiles.
It goes to show that people can find an excuse to complain about literally anything. The way I see it, play who you want, how you want.
Remember, projectile characters are called PROJECTILE characters for a reason. Don’t let it get to you, just git gud

edge lord 5 year old He’s trash if you exploit his weaknesses, which promotes a degenerate play style (AKA: camping out Mac), and it just ends up being no fun for either player. A character can be bad, but still annoying to fight against.
edge lord 5 year old because, if we’re talking at least mid to mid high level players, good Mac players will require you camp them out. Nobody wants to play like that, and if you try to just rush in against a Mac you can get stomped. Thus forcing you to camp to be effective
