Great reaction guys. Can't wait for next one
Thank you!
Oliver came up with the dead father story after he irritated Felix and Felix brushed him off. What people said about Felix was true: he grows tired of his "toys". So Oliver created the story to gain sympathy and make himself a charity case for Felix.
Yeah that part was genius
I don’t think Barry Keoghan had an issue with the end scene considering he improvised the grave scene 😂.
exactly.
He's all method, that's for sure 🤣
12:22 You're watching this with American sensibilities, but in the UK, the class system is very much like this scene, especially in university.
Didn't realize it was so prevalent. We've been to England and have aspects of it here, but I guess it is just not as bad (depending on where you live of course).
@@joshandcasey Nah you're just privileged. Just coz it ain't happening to you... etc. 😅
This is literally one of the few films where it doesn’t have filler; every shot and every dialogue serves a purpose.
Definitely needs a second watch!
@@joshandcasey ❤️
Especially if you talk over everything and miss it all.
@@MicahMann it was our first ever reaction. It takes time to get a hang of things.
The scene towards the end of the film where Oliver and Elspeth meet again is set in 2022. That's the year the newspaper Oliver was reading stated that Sir James died. So Oliver played the long game for over 15 years.
Now, that's what I call dedication haha. Thanks for sharing.
I honestly don’t think Oliver had a plan. He just saw an opportunity when Sir James died. It’s just chance that Sir James died first. What if Elspeth got killed in a car accident?
Go relook at the breakfast table scene when the ghost story about the poet Shelley gives the mom “chill bumps.” Felix is seen walking past the window even though Felix is sitting at the table. So much foreshadowing in this, and also explanations of each character’s weakness that Oliver will use against them. The mom tells Oliver that her daughter is a masochist, and that’s when Oliver changes his approach to the daughter, dominating her while also demonstrating complete acceptance of her body (the period-blood scene) which plays to her bulemia.
Oliver’s skill, as with many sociopaths, is an ability to read people. He figures out early that Felix wants to feel like a useful person because of his unearned wealth. So he becomes someone Felix can rescue.
The daughter’s weakness (aside from being an isolated teenaged girl who never meets anyone until Felix brings them home for the summer) is insecurity about her body, so the blood scene is not just for shock value.
Farleigh can’t be emotionally manipulated because as an outsider himself, he sees that Oliver is working an angle. But Farleigh, like the audience, hasn’t guessed the lengths Oliver will go to, so becomes the target of a frame-up. (His cocaine poured into the wine will show that Felix overdosed, and the family will blame Farleigh for making the coke available.
What seems rushed is really puzzle pieces clicking into place.
Yeah they did an amazing job with the subtleties in this movie
Also, Oliver is doing what Elspeth wants. Becoming Venetia’s boyfriend to cure her bulimia (rather then you know, finding out the root cause and getting her treatment).
Good insoghts
its funny that you mentioned midsommar because the actor who plays Farleigh (archie madekwe) was also in midsommar as Simon.
Wow, small world. He must have an affinity for these types of movies.
UK with it's Royal Family is still a classist society. So Oliver being looked down on as a scholarship kid at a prestigious university is just how it is.
Ah, makes sense. Thanks for the clarification.
Barry Keoghan had some good words when it came to the bathtub scene that had me see that all of the bizarre scenes in this film aren’t just weird for the sake of weird, but very intentional, he said: “He’s submitting to this obsession, trying to figure out what it is that he’s chasing, almost like a sacrifice with the way he lowers himself into the bath and when he gets down there, he’s confused, helpless, sick.” it’s what made me realize this film wasn’t just another Parasyte or The Talented Mr. Ripley, because it was never about Saltburn, it was about Felix.
Oliver was whole-heartily driven by his obsession with him.
and of course the director confirming Oliver was “profoundly in love” with Felix made that clear as-well lol, but i don’t know how i didn’t see before that Oliver is an unreliable narrator.
even when it cuts back to present day Oliver during Felix’s death, he’s still crying.
after Felix was dead, he felt like he had no choice, Saltburn had to become the new obsession.
something to blur over his infatuation with, it became the idea of him.
super neat film.
There are definitely levels to this movie, thanks for the insight!
Just a bit of constructive criticism. As new reactors, try not to criticize a movie in the middle too much. Save most of that to the end. Those who view a reaction will stop watching until the end if you’re too harsh or overly critical of a movie they enjoyed.
Fair point. Thanks for the feedback. We did like the movie, as mentioned at the end. But we will keep that in mind going forward.
Also, over and over you miss important subtleties in the dialog because you're talking over it. Wrong movie for that.@@joshandcasey
@@firbank212 well as mentioned, this was our first ever reaction. So, we’ll learn going forward. And some of it is also the way it was edited.
believe it or not classism is very much alive and well in britian, its not 'overselling it'. feel like as an american you should maybe be more aware of cultural differences in the movies you commentate on
We definitely have classism here as well. Having lived and spent much time in Europe, both of us, we are aware. This was our first reaction, we will get better with time
I think you guys forgot, they're in a historic castle, Felix also said, they couldn't have air conditioning because of historic restrictions. They can't do anything to the walls and the electricity is dated as well, therefore it likely can't accommodate a newer TV, etc. Felix to me is a guy looking for a true friend, someone who likes him for him and not for the looks or the money!
Ahh, thank you for clarifying that. Makes sense.
Also similar reason that they didn't have AC in the hot dormitory (making Felix cranky) despite it being luxurious in other ways
True. Reasons to not live in a castle I guess haha@@user-os3oe3bi8j
Also when larger TVs were initially available, it was seen as bad taste to have a gigantic obnoxious tv.
A key to good taste is a bit of understatement.
Easter Egg is that the guy bending down in the loo with Felix telling Ollie to *uck off is the real owner of the house getting a cameo.
Ha! Very cool. Would never have guessed that
@@joshandcasey Yeah I thought that too when I was told, even had a line to say. Something to tell the Grand Children though I'd wait till they were old enough prob :) I think his wife is also in the party scene outside too.
Their names are mentioned when Sir James says a certain guest never shows up to the Henrys party.
@@LadyScaper Yep brilliant isn't it. !:) And I think an IMDB credit too. :)
Nice reaction fellas! hope the channel grows real fast
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it
The actor who played farleigh ( archie madekwe ) is actually British just had to put on an american accent for the movie given his backstory you learned in the movie . Great video ❤
Thanks for the insight and kind words!
What a film to start off with 🤣🤣
Definitely unique, but still enjoyed it! Love movies with unexpected twists.
In Oliver's Great Reveal, it showed him putting the razor blade on Venetia's bathtub.
but she still did it herself right? He was manipulating her?
@@joshandcasey Yeah I believe he left them there knowing she'd do it.
@@joshandcasey the girl was pretty fragile. Hyper sexuality and bulimia at 14 says to me she was sexually abused as a child. Which her parents clearly didn’t do anything about.
Nice to meet you guys, just subscribed♥️
You too. Thank you!
I found Barry Keogan more disturbing in The Killing of a Sacred Deer. And in real life, his mother was a heroin addict who died when he was 12, so his lie in this movie was much closer to real life.
Wow, that's very sad. Didn't know that. Thanks for sharing
Annabelle only wanted to sleep with Oliver to make Felix jealous. She had to drink heavily just to make out with him.
Once Oliver said it wouldn’t matter to Felix if they slept together, she left.
Sotheby’s is a high end auction house.
While the scenes are “shocking” they are all character motivated.
A lot of people aren’t too fazed by the period scene.
The dance scene was 11 takes.
Emerald Fennell is a very complex writer. She won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for her very first film.
You say it, Bro. He is a parasite. I would say this is a new genre to me. Love the reaction.
Thank you!
@@joshandcaseyyou’re welcome. By the way, you should react to the Aussie movie “Talk to Me”. Directed by Aussie director as well as TH-camr.
Oliver arrived through the main entrance and was escorted out of Saltburn through the servant's entrance/exit.
Interesting. Good catch!
Hearing is the last thing you loose before death…. So he’s telling her what he did and why before he killed her….. that’s one of the cruelest things about it and shows how sick he was.
Major psychopath!
Great reaction guys. Enjoyed the long-form podcast like format. You’re right that the film has a Kubrikian vibe to it. If you haven’t seen it, Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange is a great and classic film to react to.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it! We will definitely add that one to the list.

Guys, if you haven't already id recommend watching Hazbin Hotel. Its an 8 episode long cartoon and the finale came out recently. Its popularity is BOOMING for good reason. I suggest hoping on that train at least for the views.
If you're not interested in it im still looking forward to seeing what you guys have to offer!
Thanks for the recommendation!
Felix died of a drug overdose (because Ollie stuffed them in his drink), which was blamed on Farleigh supplying drugs at the party. Which was why they yelled at Farleigh and cut him off.
The things is, there were 200+ people at the party. Farleigh was the only person who brought cocaine?
@@LadyScaper He's the only one who had cocaine found in his room.
@@zombiesingularitybut was any of the other party goers staying there?
I find it disturbing how the family INSTANTLY blames Farleigh whenever Oliver points the finger.
really like the set up

LMAOOO the most traumatic scene ever and the guy on the right is laughing like a maniac 😂. Loved the reaction ❤😂
Haha thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
Great reaction you guys!! This movie is so damn disturbing but insanely good.
Thank you! Agreed!
Great commentary
Appreciate it! Thank you
Everyone mentioned the eggs and how he got what he ordered but they weren’t they were sunny side up. Only cooked on one side.
That is an important detail.
1:02:40 It's a Hoyer lift or something similar. I've heard of some Medicare patients struggling to get approved for them and even then they don't pay 100% of it. It's to support the weight of the patient in lifting them in and out of bed and such since not all caregivers are bodybuilder types (also helps make the move smoother to reduce accidents, which obviously Oliver didn't care about).
Don't take the comments here too hard. I thought it was a good first effort, you took the feedback in stride, you'll improve the rhythm of commentary to comment as you practice, and for your first go you picked a relatively challenging movie with a lot of layers. Also one that brings out people with strong opinions. The reddit board for Saltburn is the same way.
Ah, that's what it is. And we appreciate it. Thank you!
first ever video being saltburn is insane lmaooooooooooo
Starting with a bang!
Great reaction guys 👏... I thought this was a great movie (if you like this type of stuff 😂)
Thank you! We enjoyed it haha. Wild ride.
It's NOT 2006. It's 2002 or 2003. Oliver is a freshman-part of the graduating class of 2006.
Ah, thanks for clarifying
This isn’t true. In the U.K., “class of” indicates the year one begins school, not when one graduates.
the beginning of the schoolyear is set in 2006 and it's the summer of 2007 (that's when the last Harry Potter book came out and that's why they're reading it).
Makes sense. As a Harry Potter fan, I should've known haha. Thank you@@Poppydarko

Perhaps part of it was due to the editing, but I feel like you missed plenty of important moments while having a conversation and maybe that led to feeling like things were rushed and didn't make sense.
Very possible. I think we just picked a tougher movie to be our first haha. Now, we know for next time, so thank you.
12:20 You've never heard anyone speak about someone else like this, about their money and all? Before my best friend became my best friend, she was bullied because she wasn't from the city, because of her old clothes, because of the way she wanted to 'fit in' with the rest. They were pushing her, cursing her, throwing her books out of the window alongside her bag. She used to cry everyday for a while. People like this exist, you've been lucky not to meet them but they can ruin you.
We are very sorry to hear that! No one deserves to be treated that way!
Kids are evil im school here and that shit ABSOLUTELY happens 😅
Haha sounds like you have some experience!
Recognize the math nerd who tries to befriend Oliver at school? He’s also ultra-cool Aemon in House of the Dragon
Oh no way! Didn’t catch that. Thanks for pointing it out. Knew he looked familiar
5:14 I knew right here that neither of you were prepared for this movie. 😏
Haha definitely the wrong vibe
“Idk if it’s just hyper obsession” Yes! One of the few people to react to this that actually understands Oliver. He wasn’t bisexual. He wasn’t in love with Felix he wanted to BE Felix.

@@joshandcasey from their reaction to this, i think they'd hide behind their hands too much.
Oliver was a psychopath which means he is smart, observant to his benefit, highly manipulative, & without emotions except for primitive ones like anger, hate, & frustration. He does not feel love, empathy, kindness, etc. Psychopaths can feign the nicer, more socially acceptable emotions & express them (for manipulative purposes) but they do not feel them. One of his “tells” in the movie is his predominantly flat affect throughout. Everything he did from the beginning was a test to see if they would ever put up a boundary for him & THEY NEVER DID. This is seminal to encounters w/a psychopath & their ability to proceed forward. We saw that as his behavior escalated in the movie. The family was very dysfunctional themselves but privileged- your observation that they experience “life” through “lesser” people is correct & was his perfect segway into their lives. He had already observed them on campus & in the debate class w/Farleigh. I don’t necessarily think Oliver planned to murder them from the beginning but 2 things happened which I think may have provoked him to that end: 1. When he heard Pamela killed herself & saw the callous reaction of the family may have produced anger in him 2. When Felix took Oliver to see his mom for his birthday, found him out, & confronted him w/being a liar, con. It is quite risky to confront a psychopath. Oliver tried to excuse it away but Felix was not having it. For sure, he decided to kill Felix at that point. The family assumed a lot about Oliver because they were narcissistic, elite, & considered everyone who wasn’t them as inferior. They never improved the lives of those in their orbit - just used them for their own purposes. Ergo, their tunnel vision. They were all horrible people 🤷🏻♀️ that were an easy target for Oliver because of his predatory nature. This was a game for Oliver & they never saw him coming. So much more in Saltburn to analyze! The movie was brilliant & very psychologically cerebral - love this director! The casting, acting, script & dialogue, film shots, etc. were perfection. She is the new (& better) Hitchcock - another movie she did that you might enjoy is The Power of the Dog. Another brilliant film that is worth the time. Appreciate your reaction - maybe watch it again through a different lens?
These guys blab through every scene in the movie barely paying attention. If you like that this is the channel for you. I don't see how they even followed it at all.
It was the way it got edited. We can only show much so much on TH-cam without having the video taken down. We will try to have more footage next time but it's a fine line. Hence why we have a Patreon for full, unfiltered reactions.

Im trying to understand that I’m just not the target audience for this channel, but i can only imagine straight white middle-upper class men relating to anything you said.
“People don’t actually talk like that”(Referring to the jacket scene at the beginning) They sure did when I was in school in 2007 wearing cheap clothes but I doubt y’all ever had that problem.
You’re making a lot of unfairly negative assumptions about us based on one comment.
it's also interesting tat every time you see a man naked or half naked you say it's unnecessary shot. maybe you should think about bisexuality. p.s. this movie was made by women for women (and for the gay and theys) it's purpose was to make straight men uncomfortable so i guess it did a great job.

I’d say it’s a good reaction but there are several key moments and dialogues that you missed either because you were talking above it or because you were checking your phone. Doing research is ok but you should take notes and come back to it later so you can check it still when you do your review.
Oh and about the “vampire” scene, please do not say that women don’t enjoy that kind of thing. It’s not my case but it’s always exciting to know that a man is not rebuffed by something natural and is willing to “worship” you the exact way you are, and a lot of women like that. We just don’t shout it because it’s still a very taboo kind of thing. (“worship” is the word used by Fennell).
That’s it for me. Sorry if there are any mistakes, English is not my first language.
The point is Venetia felt worshipped. Which was the point. I also think Oliver really enjoyed sleeping with people. He tried to resume a relationship with Venetia and he didn’t care at all that Annabelle was using him. She literally had trashed him earlier. He just wanted to get some!
For period sex, there is even a joking achievement called “redwings”. I think we all know what that means now.
That’s something people definitely do, it’s just that it does not get discussed.

Worst reaction... Already criticized the movie way in the beginning and not appreciating this cinematic masterpiece
If you watched the video, you’d see we both enjoyed the movie. We were just pointing things out what we noticed. This is also our first ever reaction. Everyone is entitled to an opinion
You can tell a woman directed the movie, the shocking moments in the film created buzz but without them it felt more like a soap opera. A little unrealistic but entertaining none the less. It's kinda like 'The Talented Mr. Ripley' but minus the police interrogation. I would have liked a silhouette of the butler at the very end of Oliver's dance to show that retribution is at hand.
Yeah that would've been a great addition!
But there is no retribution at hand.
The screenplay mentions at the end that Oliver still has Duncan to deal with. Screenplays sometimes provide a bit of additional "canon" for some of those densely packed movies with a lot of hidden details, like this one or Hereditary.
So, a woman can only write soap operas, or it’s a soap opera because a woman wrote it?
Fennel isn’t about audience catharsis. I find she goes for a bigger swing.
Also, some people do get away with stuff like this. Ever heard of Lori Vallow? 5 husbands, 2 “died” and a string of other people connected to her “died”, but no one figured out anything was weird until children went missing. *shrugs*
Damn you guys didn't get this movie at all. Also the British aristocratic culture completely flew over your head. Harping on and on about the size of the TV when in a historic estate a large TV would be out of place and seem tacky to the aristocracy. They just have a TV for sh!ts and giggles. I'm sure that's odd to Americans but you people tend think bigger equals better. The shocking scenes were pretty well placed considering Oliver definitely has a personality disorder. Probably ASPD and he is a compulsive liar, obsessive and has poor impulse control. Even when he could get caught in the act, he does it anyway, completely brazenly and out in the open. Either a psychopath or sociopath he lacks empathy and morality and wants what he wants no matter the cost to others. He will do whatever it takes to get what he wants. That was perfectly depicted in this movie. The rich kids absolutely would speak that way especially in 2006. The dialogue was brilliant and it's a beautifully shot film. The only issue I had with the movie is the very end were everything is revealed in a little montage. By that point, the viewer knows already what Oliver is capable of. All we need to confirm our suspensions was him killing the mother and inheriting everything.
I think we got most of that. While we may not know a lot about the British aristocracy, the way they behave and talk is no different than any wealthy family here. And the TV thing for us was more just us joking. Granted, I will stand by the fact that bigger is better to a degree when it comes to a television haha. Nothing to do with just being 'American'. And of course Oliver is a psychopath. We mention it. It was beautifully shot and we overall enjoyed it.
you are so scared of naked male bodies that you won't watch it again that is so sad and stupid it is a great movie
Nothing to do with naked male bodies, was more just weren't super crazy about the movie. It was ok
The director/writer Emerald Fennell won BAFTA/Oscar for Promising Young Woman, acted in the BBC series Call the Midwife, and is an Oxford graduate so she knows the people/layout of the University. Elordi is Australian. Compare Keoghan to Matt Damon's performance in The Talented Mr. Ripley and would love your thoughts. The Insitiut de Rosey is a boarding school that is so exclusive that it only accepts 10 percent of students per country with an average cost of 150K per year not including sports and two separate campuses in Switzerland.
