Oxford alum here: the first bit of the movie is really accurate. The dinner at the start is like a fresher's dinner where you meet everyone in your year and you have to wear gowns. The three person class is a tutorial, which is the main way teaching is done in Oxford. It's rarely more than 3 students, and this personal attention is one of the reasons Oxford is such a good university. You write an essay every week and then discuss/defend it in your little group. You'll swap tute partners and professors each term as you rotate through subjects. A pigeonhole or pidge is like your personal mail box in college. There's an internal mail system and that's how you deliver essays, send things to girls you fancy, receive invitations to societies and get your post from home. Even these days a lot of professors do things the old fashioned way and mark by hand. I was there at the same time as Fennell, but at different colleges. We went to a couple of the same parties but she was socially just incredibly posh and pretty much exactly like the family portrayed here. Her 18th birthday was featured in Tatler, a national magazine for rich folk
The celebration outside college (actually Exam Schools) is the end of first year exams. It's a recent tradition to get "trashed" and it's a lot messier than depicted here. I got covered in shampoo, foam and glitter. The flowers they're wearing in their lapels indicate what exams they're doing - white for first exam, red for last and pink for any in-between. So when you see someone in the morning with a red carnation you can congratulate them about to be taking their last exam
The part where they throw the stone for Oliver's mum is my college, Magdalen. I lived in the building behind them in those shots. I grew up without a ton of money so I still can't believe it sometimes!
People who watch this movie: “I’ve also never wanted to know anything.” Seriously though, it was beautifully shot, and Rosamund Pike was absolutely hilarious.
Saltburn House is Drayton House in Northamptonshire, It's a mile from my house and I really enjoyed seeing the countryside I love and I see every day filmed so beautifully. Although it is cold and lightly rainy today.🌧
Yeah nobody actually lives there but read that since the film people are breaking in and thrashing the place to get i dont know, take selfies, make ticktoks of them dancing to 'Murder on The Dancefloor' or something...thats kind of a reprecussion of making these films.
To see Felix's dad in his breakthrough role, look for _Withnail and I_ (1987). Two unemployed actors borrow the key to an uncle's rural cottage but find their impromptu holiday less recuperative than they expected. A black comedy loosely based on the director's own life in the 1960s.
As much as people might think a family like this surely doesn't exist, I can assure you they do. An employee of mine was having an engagement party, and when I looked at the address on the invite, I found out it was on the side of town I'd never been to with 5+ million dollar homes. I had to be let in through a huge security gate by actual security guards for their community. The dinner was almost like the one at the party. A bunch of self absorbed rich people talking about rich people things, not actually listening to anything anyone else had to say. Later as the party was winding down around midnight, my employee got blindingly drunk. He began screaming in the house which only had a few guests left. Then when I went in to say good night and pick up my keys I'd left on the table by accident, he began swearing and actually lunging at me. The family all just sat around as if it wasn't happening. No one even moved or looked up. IT WAS NUTS!!!! His brother whom I'd never met was the only one to actually get up and try and stop him while the rest of them discussed an upcoming Christmas party. I've never driven so fast out of a place in my life. My other friend who was with me had to keep checking with me to make sure I was okay. The next day at work, I wanted nothing to do with this guy. When he came in for his shift, all he did was just smile and hand me an envelope with a card that simply read "sorry." F---kin hell. I wanted to be like what the f--k is wrong with you and your family because wtf. True definition of WASP family.
I was waiting for your reactions to Saltburn and you did not disappoint! Clarus your expressions during some of the key moments in this film were priceless. Many viewers have compared this film to The Talented Mr. Ripley or Parasite (as you said) but I'm old and see it very similar to Something For Everyone (1970) starring the fabulous Angela Lansbury as a countess and a Michael York as the young man who covets her castle, position and wealth. Michael worms his way onto and thru her staff, the countess, her daughter and of course....her son. A dark comedy with a lighter, comedic tone. No bath tub or menstruation on screen but the boys do take a nude swim in the lake together. Delightful. Give it a watch if you can find it. 🏳🌈 Also, I hope Barry wore protection when he filmed the f*ck*ng Felix's grave scene, otherwise he opened himself up for a nasty UTI.
Have we seen Felix using people outside of having sex with young women who want to have sex with him (if we are going to count that)? He doesn't really seem to use people that much.
it is indicated by vencia’s line “i like you better than last year’s one” that felix uses poor people like oliver to keep as summer charity cases to make himself feel better. felix isn’t as bad as the rest of the family but he still uses people. like he actually took oliver’s bike to class. that’s such a weird thing to do even if someone offers
For me this movie is a masterpiece, although i get why other people wouldn't click with it. Apparently Barry thought up the grave scene and just did it, all he asked was for it to be set up and have the set and then he just did what Ollie would do
Fun fact: Barry Keoghan marked his script Oliver #1, Oliver #2, Oliver #3 and so on earmarking & representing the different psycho Oliver's needed. Genius. The film is a masterpiece in lies, greed, envy, psychology, power, classism, revenge, deception & manipulation. Jacob Elordi is Australian btw. This movie should win so many awards but it won't because of how uncomfortable some of the scenes are.
I am so happy you guys enjoyed this cause I know people are still mad at this movie which I find hilarious. I think Emerald Fennell is hitting it out the park with her two movies, for me anyway.
don't know whether the controversy over saltburn precluded it from the fanfare, but i guess there's not much of rush for yall to see the oscar nominees. if you choose to go through the list, please watch 'past lives'. it's a quiet movie with an outsized fandom of reviewers considering it the best movie of the year. it should've easily been included in actress, original screenplay, director, score, cinematography and perhaps 2 supporting actor nominations. it's a subtle lower budget independent released too early in the year w no major studio backing and a limited theatrical release. how it even got nominated by a self-congratulatory industry award show for best picture speaks to it's effect on the audience.
I just watched _Past Lives._ If people wanted to be upset about a movie nominated for screenplay and Best Picture but not for its female director, I think they could have gone with this one. (Really, with twice as many Best Picture nominees as Best Director nominees, there is not way to avoid half at minimum of the one not having a match in the other.) But, beside the point. A good one to react to. Also, not nominated but could have been: _All of Us Strangers_ would be another good one to react to.
Hey Nerdy i agree for me Saltburn was almost the best film of 2023 only topped by the film 'Anatomy of a Fall' which was just a phenomenal piece of art..Oppenheimer was a great film, the sound, Cillian Murphy were incredible but it was a little dragged out for me and could of been edited more in places but still a great film...I am not like u guys and know very little about fantasy novels or Dungeons and Dragons except for what i learned from Stranger Things but 'Dungeons and Dragons' the movie was so good and so damn funny i saw in theatres twice..Its a pity i was one of the only people worldwide to go and see it though😂😂No Sequel happening😫
a similar comment I made in another channel: this is shot and promoted much like an Agatha Christie-style mystery novel, much like Knives Out was: saturated colors, high-class environments, lots of plotting and double-crossing, you know the drill. the difference being, over-the-top goofy posh characters like those in an Christie novel, don't exist... these people here? as depicted here? they do. and many of them now rule England. think about that.
There's a fair few American reactors who don't think the depiction of the British aristocracy in this movie is accurate. As someone who worked as a butler at a stately home, I can assure that while it's somewhat exaggerated for comic effect, it's not inaccurate! There's a wide gulf between the public facade of respectability and how they actually live, and Saltburn captures that really well. When Americans think of the British aristocracy, they typically imagine stuffy politeness, staid ritual and ceremony, perfect manners. Erm no. Reckless extravagance, decadence, drugs and wild parties is nearer to the mark. They just keep it behind closed doors. 😉
Hey guys, luv the channel..always entertaining and honest reviews..Clarus u look beautiful as always...Saltburn was a great film..yes it was a weird film with some gross ass moments but Barry Keoghan is intense and phenomenal, robbed of an Oscar Nom, just like Andrew Scott from All of Us Strangers was too another great film..Im from Ireland so might be a little bias but feel Oscars are anti Irish.Cillian will do it though..Rant over..enjoy the movie..which will be the weirdest moment in the movie for u..everyone has their worst😂
Hey..i totally missed House of Dragon guy in this..maybe it was the 2 eyes...Oh Euphoria is a show about teens that acts like 30 year olds and are all messed up...Im 30 and i watched it.....A lot of people cant get passed the weird things but for me the film is Brilliant...How its not nominated for more Awards and stuff is crazy for me...Jacob Elordi should of been Superman...
The best movie from 2023 was “All of Us Strangers”. Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott are perfect(ly gorgeous!) PLEASE react to it. -The grave scene was Barry’s idea and they did it on a closed set. -My favorite scene was the every ending, Murder on the Dance Floor… for obvious reasons (Oh, look! I have goosebumps!) -It was not a hand job he gave Farleigh. Think lower… -Remember that old saying, “I don’t f’ck anything that bleeds for seven days and doesn’t die?” You go, Venetia! (Oh, wait. She did die in blood. Never mind!) -This was not a horror movie. It was a dark comedy. Very dark. -This is my first time finding your channel and I loved your reactions! Only Fans girl, when is your next Stand In job for Anya Taylor-Joy? Isn’t it scary to see your doppelgänger in all of those films! You look ready for “The Menu”! -Sir, I do not know your name but names aren’t important. Titles are… SIR!! 🤤🤤🤤
Oliver heard Felix during the tour saying “I accidentally fingered my cousin aka Farleigh”. He got it from Felix and that’s why he fingered Farleigh on the bed!
Sociopaths have emotions. It's psychopaths who don't really. Sociopaths are made through trauma ...psychopaths are born that way and it seems like Oliver is a psychopath. But yeah, super manipulative pathological liar.
I do think it’s kinda weird that a lot of reactors seem to think Venetia willingly kissed Oliver when he’s the one who kissed her lmao. Like yall aren’t the first ppl I’ve seen be like ‘ew why did she kiss him when he reminds her of her brother’ when he kissed her first
about the vampire scene 😂 men really try to be understanding BUuuT it's not just blood you guys (drinking/eating blood is kinda creepy by itself), but there is also tissue from the uterus. so, i appreciate the sentiment but some more educating doesnt hurt
Ok! This is my first time watching you 2 and I loved the reaction ❤but are they a couple or is the guy gay? I’m getting gay vibes but if I’m wrong I’m sorry
I love that Rosamund Pike spends the whole movie saying some truly unhinged stuff in such a nonchalant way. Every line she utters is pure gold.
Oxford alum here: the first bit of the movie is really accurate. The dinner at the start is like a fresher's dinner where you meet everyone in your year and you have to wear gowns.

Sounds awesome really
@@Deimos2k5 Do you mean Oliver’s Dad? It doesn’t matter, neither of them died, so… It sounds so beautiful!
Yes, very accurate! I was there from 2005-2008, around the time this is set, and it made me feel so nostalgic.
22:33 "Did he use soap?"
You're worried about a SOAP taste?! 😂
Soap s-cum!!! Oliver was blowing bubbles with every burp!
Thank you.
apparently the graveyard scene was improv. He just had them film him and said to let him do his thing.
People who watch this movie: “I’ve also never wanted to know anything.”
Seriously though, it was beautifully shot, and Rosamund Pike was absolutely hilarious.
Rosamund, though.
Never mind the tub, garden or grave scene. The dude biting the candy bar like it was corn on the cob was the most disturbing to me.
Alison Oliver, the sister, really killed that bathtub scene. But Rosamund stole the film.
She was *sooooooooo* good in the scene. That scene cemented her in the movie, it was phenomenal.
Murder on the dance floor WILL be stuck in your head for the next few weeks 💃🕺
Passing for being a real live human boy. Farleigh was right, though.
Lol agreed.
“Can you imagine the conversation with the intimacy director before filming this scene?”
Oh, this scene was improvised by the way
Loved your reaction, I'm happy someone laughed as much as I did. So many people miss the humor in it

Also live in Northampton, the countryside here is gorgeous.
The owners of the actual house are having real problems with trespassers at the moment!
That' awful! But I'm not surprised.
“Certain threshold of money where empathy dies.” I love that.
You two are the best people to react to this💀 I mean that in the best way possible
Rosmund Pike had the BEST lines.

It's a shame _Something for Everyone_ is mostly forgotten. I buy copies of the DVD when I see them and give them to people I think will like it.
By the way that graveyard scene that wasn't in the script that scene was Barry keoghan (who play Oilver Quik) idea to fuck the grave
26:06 now we know how The Joker got his scars… literally, Barry Keoghan plays The Joker in the Matt Reeves Batman movies lol
😂😂😂

Farleigh looks like Sideshow Bob
Farleigh is any other male Soul Train dancer. You know he got that SOUL!

People either seem to think this movie is the worst piece of trash ever or incredible. No real middle ground.
And yet, I think I'm in the middle, enjoying the takes on all sides. Still prefer _Ripley,_ though.
Rosamund Pike was also my favorite in this 😂

about the vampire scene 😂 men really try to be understanding BUuuT it's not just blood you guys (drinking/eating blood is kinda creepy by itself), but there is also tissue from the uterus. so, i appreciate the sentiment but some more educating doesnt hurt
