    In this video we go island hopping in the SimWorks Studios Quest Kodiak within Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS).
    We will take the Kodiak on a multi-sector cargo run from Grand Case airport, on the island of St Martin, over to Saba, on to St Barthélemy and then returning back to St Martin. Hopefully the flight should be good fun and a nice little test of the SimWorks Studios Quest Kodiak.
    Please note this aircraft is still in a pre-release state. As such it may well not represent the quality of the final product. This video is a first look at the product; I will aim to have a full review out once the aircraft has been released.
    Please note this video and all its contents / materials, is for entertainment / simulation purposes only.

      That’s great Jean. I would say overall the Kodiak is very much on a par with the JF Arrow family and its great to see so many people are keen to pick it up and support SWS - I think they deserve it for their efforts! Shouldn’t have to wait too long now. Hope you enjoy it : )

      Thanks Péter! Yes, absolutely worth giving the route a try. A beautiful area to fly in and certainly Saba and St Barts offer a very decent challenge! I expect I might fly the route in reverse for any Aerosoft Twin Otter review haha XD

    Thanks for the nice preview. I am not someone who likes glass cockpits much because of the small font used. But i am honestly looking very forward to this plane. And very happy that is seems to be as good as hoped, perhaps even better. These people are doing a quality job here.
    Edit: Forgot to mention that specially the visible passengers and cargo are a HUGE bonus. Something i really hope more devs will start to use.

      I’m not a big glass cockpit fan either to be fair, but it fits quite nicely in the Kodiak and I was having enough fun not to care too much frankly haha. The Kodiak is a great effort from the SWS team overall and I’m happy to see that people are keen to pick it up and support them.
      The visible passengers / cargo was news to me haha. Gutted I missed that one for the vid! I didn’t get any sort of manual with the preview version (as far as I could tell), so I wasn’t as clued on some of the features as I might have liked to have been. Ah well, I’ll save it for the review I guess ; )

    I have been following the progress of the Kodiac for some time, this video only cements the exemplary work, and love from the dev team. I don't usually buy into G1000, screen aircraft, preferring old school cockpit gauges (older the better) such as JF's Pipers, or the recent Bonanza c35. BUT, am looking forward to having some fun with this little beauty. A ton of stuff was not featured with this video such as carrying passengers instead of cargo (the copilot is still buggy afaik) all show up with weight settings, but yes, thank you for this great video.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the Kodiak seems like a really top notch effort from SimWorks Studios! A really pleasant surprise (not that their previous efforts were bad by any means - but the Kodiak is just that much better) and I’m very much looking forward to it myself. I’m not a big G1000 fan either, but it fits quite nicely in the Kodiak and I was having too much fun to care at any rate haha.
      I’m sure I missed a fair bit and I’m gutted I didn’t know about the cargo / passengers (I’ll save it for the review I guess), but in fairness, I didn’t get a copy of the manual with the preview version (at least that I could find), so I had to figure things out as I went. Sounds like the product is even more excellent than I first realised then!
      My pleasure as always on the video! Thanks for watching : )

      Hi Stephen,
      I’m not a big Caravan user either, it’s not the sort of aircraft I would typically fly in the sim when left to my own devices (especially not with a G1000), but yeah, the Kodiak is rather good fun I have to say. I think they fact it’s quite a strong STOL performer is what makes it a lot more interesting vs the Caravan (for me anyway). The sounds are really good and overall it’s a pretty immersive aircraft. Fits rather nicely into the sim I think. . . Worth it for the goosebumps alone perhaps haha.

      Nor am I Antonio, but some aircraft are fun enough, that you just stop caring haha! The Kodiak is such an aircraft I would say. Also the G1000 feels somewhat “right” in the Kodiak, as the aircraft does feel modern and slick (it doesn’t feel like SimWorks Studios just jammed a G1000 in lazily).
      Cheers! : )

  • @JohnVanderbeck
    @JohnVanderbeck ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @33:20 hard to make out clearly but it looked like the AP was set to capture 5100 not 5000 hence the slight climb. When you turn on AP it captures the current altitude and thus will ignore the set altitude (5000 in this case) unless you go into VS mode.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks John, it looks like you’re probably correct. I wasn’t all that familiar with the operation of the Garmin autopilot at the time and it seems somewhat counterintuitive, that it captured 5,100ft, when the ALT bug was set for 5,000ft but sure enough, the FMA was showing a capture height of 5,100ft (which still doesn’t really make sense, since I pressed the ALT button well below that).
      Cheers for the info. All the best : )

      I want to apologize to the people who really liked this plane. I just forgot to add to that comment "for me".
      And I want to clarify my comment.
      I have all five Carenado and BRsimDesigns Debonair planes in my hangar. I stopped flying them because they don't provide anything to make your flight more interesting. I told myself I've had enough. As long as we buy such aircraft, the developers will continue to give it to us.
      I bought a Milviz PC-6, at least there is a simulation of engine failures. Stage 2 will come out with steam gauges. 39 flight hours, considering that I make one flight a day. Sometimes two.
      And then I bought a DC-6. This plane blow my brain. It has everything I wanted. When I fly on it, I am always busy with something, old school VOR navigation is something. Engines don't always start the first time, even if you do it right. 27 flight hours DC-6A, 10 flight hours DC-6B. I fly it every day since November 27. Except yesterday.
      I wanted something new, bought a P-38L yesterday. The first flight: I take off, climb and then there is a clap. It turned out that the canopy was closed but not locked. Second flight, above 12,000 feet, engines began to fail. It turned out that he had forgotten to put the fuel pumps into emergency mode above 10,000 feet.
      And many more interesting things, thanks to the developers of these aircraft.
      Sorry for errors, I`m no English speaking.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think there’s any need to apologise (you’re previous comment was very reasonable), but I certainly appreciate the sentiment! So many simmers unfortunately think that because they don’t like something, nobody else should either - of course we are all different. . . I totally get where you’re coming from and I’m sure many others would also. Quality / complexity can become a bit of a drug in flight simulation haha; after you’ve tried something like the DC-6, there will indeed be few other addons that compare.
      I’m glad you’ve found what you enjoy in the sim though, we should all be aiming to enjoy the hobby at the end of the day!
      Cheers, all the best : )

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gumper,
      It does indeed have quite a bit in common with the C208, but it’s fished to a much higher standard and does offer much improved STOL capabilities amongst other things. For those that don’t generally fly these types of aircraft, the C208 is more than good enough, but for people who like this sort of flying, I would say the Kodiak is a worthwhile upgrade. Just my opinion though of course.

    This look like a different plane to the release version. Looking at the turn coordinator I saw no violent swing to the right that you see in release. Your nose also remained inline with the runway. In the release version some advise having full right rudder trim, and even then on rotation it isn’t enough to remain coordinated. Even with a crosswind from the left you will be crabbing down the runway away from the wind.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Hobanagerik,
      It is indeed quite different from the preview version. SWS updated the flight model between the two versions, based on feedback from Daher (the people who now own Quest) I believe. The aircraft now has a lot more torque etc during the takeoff and apparently full rudder trim should be used; in reality though, I think full rudder trim was overdoing it a bit, hence the need for left rudder during the takeoff and that fairly violent swing on rotation (I might try half rudder trim next time).
      I hope that clears things up a bit. All the best! : )

      @hobanagerik 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’ve got my eye on this one. I can see myself going all-in and getting the floatplane version as well. That Saba Island airport is quite intimidating. It looks like a rock-bound aircraft carrier. Now I want to search youtube for “real life” landing videos to see if that rock wall is really so close to the approach path. By the way, the G1000 NXi is pretty amazing. In real General Aviation I’ve only flown steam gauges so I have no prior real life experience with the G1000. I’m learning it now in MSFS 2020 with the NXi and it’s quite challenging to keep track of all the features and how to get to them. I think if you found the right menu, you could probably watch cable TV on the thing. :-) Awesome preview, but I expected no less. Cheers!

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations

      Yeah, I think the Kodiak is shaping up very nicely indeed! It wasn’t on my radar initially (I hadn’t heard any mention of it in the works), but I’m very much looking forward to it now. I developed a bit of a taste for float-plane flying in the sim a couple of months ago, so I reckon I could be tempted also ; )
      Saba is indeed quite the location! It would certainly focus the senses, landing there in real life I’m sure. I had to chuckle to myself a little bit actually, because I knew the runway was short, but thought to myself at the time; “meh, how hard can it be in something like the Kodiak” - turns out, still quite hard haha XD
      Yes, I really do need to try out the NXi mod. Trouble is, I’m always so pushed for time. I much prefer steam gauges myself (at least in the sim), but I have a little bit of real-world G1000 experience. Why would one buy this over the in-game Caravan (with mods to make it better)? I noticed too that the prop lever had no effect out of feather on the ground which is too bad. In real life you sit in a feathered condition while you get ready for the flight. Saves a bit of gas. You should be able to pull the power back and use that big discing prop as an airbrake too which would drop you down real fast. Nice looking model overall. Needs a cargo pod though!

      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jeremy,
      I haven’t tried the modded Caravan to be fair, but the Kodiak is certainly way better than the default one. I suppose it just depends on what one is after. The default Caravan will probably suffice more than enough, if one is only looking to do the odd hop in it - to some reasonable sized strips. The Kodiak is a better-modelled, more immersive option otherwise though and it’s real advantage is it’s much more STOL capable than the Caravan. Fair point on the prop (I didn’t notice myself); I’m not sure if that’s an omission, a sim limitation, or something still to be implemented (bearing in mind the product isn’t finished yet). The Kodiak does come with an optional cargo pod, in fact it comes with multiple configurations in general : )

      Still running a -50 curve on the rudder at the moment, but I’m not sure that was actually a good idea with the Kodiak. I wasn’t getting much rudder response with small inputs, but was then getting quite a bit of response all of a sudden at larger deflections (that would be the curves fault of course). Seems as though the rudder in the SWS Kodiak is probably a little more reasonable than most aircraft in the sim, though I haven’t had a chance to check that further yet.

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations the amount of demonstrated adverse yaw has been somewhat of a bone of contention during the testing program for us. Both Daher and MBP have confirmed close to full right rudder trim is required on takeoff (much like the PC6), although the respective official manuals and checklists just state ‘trims - set’ which is rather ambiguous! The amount of left pull has also changed a few times with various flight models, so the final public release may be different to what you’ve seen.
      The latest build digitally shows Aileron and Rudder trim position on the G1000 NXI MFD underneath all the engine parameters, although frustratingly there is currently no space for indication of the pitch trim- so that’ll have to be done by guess work and feel for the time being.

      Hi Charlie - thanks very much!
      Absolutely, a very worth replacement for the Asobo Porter, the Kodiak is head and tails above in every regard (as is the MILVIZ Porter for what it’s worth). As you say, not free of course, but well worth the money (from what I’ve seen so far) I think.
      For the route, I just used the world map planning tool. It actually planned the route in the opposite sense from that which I was wishing to fly it haha, but all I was really looking for was a line on the G1000 I could follow. The NXi mod would definitely be the way to go on such an addon though and would hopefully offer quite a bit more fidelity, in terms of programming the route directly into the G1000.
      Doors are animated via clickspots yes. Chocks, so far as I could tell, where animated as a function of the aircraft being shut down. In all honesty, I’m not sure whether a tablet or some other feature will be included with the final product - I wasn’t given the manual with the preview release, so I was a little bit in the dark as to exactly what features the final product will have.
      Indeed I do have a key assigned to my hardware, to get the prop into the beta range. A shame that my prop axis didn’t govern it, but that seems to be stock-standard for the sim at the moment. . .
      Hope all of that helps. Glad you enjoyed the video once again!

The Kodiak is a little bit smaller than the Caravan, but has better STOL capabilities.

      Hi Manuel,
      It’s not actually a mod I’m using in the video, but ATC audio recordings which I’ve edited in afterwards (just to give the flight a bit more atmosphere). I believe there are some ATC chatter mods available for MSFS (based on what others have told me); otherwise you can just listen along to a little bit of LiveATC.net in the background : )
      I hope that helps a bit. All the best!

      I didn’t use it in the preview, simply because I rarely fly anything with the G1000 in it, so didn’t have the mod installed. Planning to include it for the full review though : )

      Thanks very much indeed! Very kind of you to say.
      As Daniel mentions, I’m actually using a head-tracker for the camera control (I’m using TrackIR). It takes one’s head movements and inputs them into the sim. TrackIR is great, although a little pricey. There are also cheaper / freeware alternatives available (Face Track NoIR for example).
      I hope that helps a little bit. Thanks again and all the best! : )

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Vinod,
      I don’t know the answer to that 100%, but I would say most likely not. My hardware prop axis didn’t allow me to move the Kodiak’s prop into the feathered position (as you may be able to spot in the video, I had to use the mouse to move the prop lever into the feathered range).
      I hope that clarifies things a bit. Cheers, all the best! : )

Ya know I had a Pilatus in FSX, 10 years ago, that was pretty good! Better than this! They are hoping new flyers wont see the difference? Even the graphics are poor in the MSFS sim! LOW RES! Please! Oh really David? I really rather enjoyed this one haha. Is it study level, probably not, but it’s done to a very decent standard overall I felt (good systems, decent sounds, nice modelling etc).
      I actually reached out to SimWorks Studios on this one, to see if they would let me take a look (as opposed to the other way around). As ever though, I gave nothing more than my full and objective opinions. I’ll guess we’ll have to agree to disagree on the Kodiak then ; )

      Funny you mention that Graeme; I only noticed when flying the Kodiak again later on, that of course it has all of the usual Asobo callouts in this regard. For some reason when I recorded the video, none of them were audible though (no rad alt calls also for example). I’m not sure why they weren’t working during the recording, but they have on other flights.

      I’m amazed that the Arrow still hasn’t made it into the Xbox yet. I see it’s now on the Marketplace though, so I guess that’s a step in the right direction. . . I gather (from what I’ve read elsewhere) that the Kodiak is planned for the Xbox also (though I’m not sure as to the veracity of those comments / when that might happen).

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, well likewise for the most part Nexe; I'd take a steam gauge cockpit over a glass one any day (in the sim at least)! That actually seems to be the general consensus among my viewers, but of course the Garmin units are an easy option for devs. . . To be fair to SimWorks Studios though, the Kodiak only ever came with the Garmin units I believe, so they've simply modelled the aircraft accurately.

      Wow 3 real life f-18 pilots in the same thread. What are the odds?

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, slim to none I would say Robert, but I don’t think any of us are professing to be. . .
      For sure, one would need to have flown the real-world F-18, in order to say whether or not the Asobo F-18 behaves accurately; but I don’t think one needs to have flown an actual F-18, in order to surmise that the Asobo version behaves incorrectly. Many of the Asobo aircraft are well wide of the mark, so I would say it’s unlikely that they just happened to get the F-18 spot on (the ground handling for example is very odd)?
      I often mention during my videos / reviews, where my analysis is based on “best-guesses” and / or speculation - I certainly don’t profess to know everything. Overall though, I’m fairly confident that there are some issues with the Asobo F-18’s behaviour.
      If you’ve flown the real-world F-18 yourself, then I stand corrected and I’d be more than happy to hear your take on it (genuinely).
      Cheers!

      Hi Cali,
      Well, personally I have a hardware keybind assigned to “decrease throttle” and just use that but yes, I believe the throttle is moved into the reverse / beta range, in order to actuate the reverse thrust.
